Chern insulator 2026-10-18
A Chern insulator is a two-dimensional band insulator whose occupied energy bands have a nonzero total Chern number. It has a bulk band gap, yet an interface with a topologically trivial band insulator carries a net excess of quantum Hall edge states propagating in one direction. Time-reversal symmetry must be broken. The Haldane model shows that a nonzero average magnetic flux is unnecessary.
Why distinguish two solids that both have a band gap? The energy eigenvalues tell us whether an excitation costs energy; the energy eigenstates also describe how the state changes around the Brillouin zone. Their Berry curvature can integrate to a nonzero integer. A small deformation changes the Berry curvature continuously, but cannot continuously change an integer. A Chern insulator and a trivial band insulator therefore cannot be connected through a path of isolated occupied energy bands with a common bulk band gap. The distinction survives sufficiently weak local perturbations. It does not make every microscopic quantity or every boundary state immune to every disturbance.
For a single filled energy band, set the Berry connection to , and orient the momentum plane by . Then
This is the First Chern class evaluated on the Brillouin zone, a torus. Smooth eigenvectors may require multiple patches; their transition phases have integer winding numbers. For charge and conventional electric current , these conventions give and . The measurable magnitude agrees with Chern number and integer Hall conductivity. Reversing the momentum orientation or the sign of the Berry connection reverses the displayed .
Chern number Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-14
On a compact oriented -manifold without boundary, an integral product of Chern classes of total complex degree pairs with the fundamental class to give a Chern number. A unitary connection supplies Chern-Weil theory representatives, but the integer is independent of that connection. The Second Chern number on a four-manifold is one important example; the integral of the First Chern class over a closed surface is another.
For filled, separated, noninteracting magnetic Bloch bands, the Berry curvature integral over the magnetic Brillouin zone is an integer Chern number , giving . Patches of Berry connection meet through phases with integer windings; continuous gap-preserving changes cannot change . D. J. Thouless, M. Kohmoto, M. P. Nightingale and M. den Nijs developed this band argument; it does not establish the interacting fractional case.[ref]
For , put . The lower-band orthogonal projector is . Applying the Pauli matrix multiplication law to gives
Thus the Chern number is the signed number of times the Brillouin zone covers a two-sphere under . The lower energy eigenstate's actual Bloch vector is . The Berry curvature has the displayed positive sign for this lower band and the stated Berry connection; switching to the upper band changes its sign.
A useful local calculation exposes what each valley contributes. Write . The linear Dirac Hamiltonian gives
Each unbounded continuum cone gives a half-integer in this calculation. It is not a separately realizable half-integer Chern number of an isolated lattice energy band. The full honeycomb lattice supplies both valleys and the large-momentum completion. Starting with a trivial large- state, each single-valley mass crossing changes the lattice integer by the corresponding unit. There are no other band touchings. This establishes the exact lattice result
for , excluding the boundaries. This sign belongs to our explicit bond vectors, orientation and occupied-band convention.
For an original worked example, choose , , and . Then , , both valley gaps are , and . Choosing instead , gives exactly the same valley-gap magnitudes but . The first state's two valley contributions reinforce; the second state's cancel.

An independent eigenvector-overlap calculation on periodic , and momentum grids gives for the first example and for the second. Reversing in the first example gives . Direct integration of the analytic lattice Berry curvature agrees. For the overlap calculation one can remove the embedding phase from , replacing it by ; this makes the cell-basis Hamiltonian periodic and prevents a false boundary-seam contribution. The local Berry curvature can depend on this basis convention; the integrated Chern number agrees. All mass-zero parameters are excluded before evaluating any integer.
Haldane conjecture 2026-10-18
For the uniform, nearest-neighbour, isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet chain, the Haldane conjecture distinguishes integer spin , with a nonzero bulk excitation spectral gap, from half-odd-integer , with gapless excitations in the thermodynamic limit. The continuum nonlinear sigma model contains a topological angle : integer and half-odd-integer spins give and modulo . This is a different use of topology from the two-dimensional occupied-band Chern number. The chain belongs to the Haldane phase.[ref]
A Chern number turns local curvature data into a global integer. Let be a complex vector bundle over a compact oriented manifold without boundary, with a unitary connection represented locally by an anti-Hermitian matrix-valued one-form . Its curvature form of a connection is . The Chern-Weil theory representative of the total Chern class is
The coefficients are closed differential forms. They represent the images of integral Chern classes in de Rham cohomology. On an oriented -manifold, a product with pairs with the fundamental class to give a Chern number, an integer independent of the unitary connection.
For example,
For an bundle with , . On an oriented four-manifold the Second Chern number is then
using the fundamental matrix trace and the stated anti-Hermitian convention. The trace-product correction is required for a general bundle; it cannot simply be omitted. The sign of a physical instanton number also depends on the trace and orientation convention, so these conventions must accompany the formula.
The local origin of closure is the Bianchi identity and the cyclic matrix trace: . Independence of the connection one-form follows more concretely by varying a family . Since , the Chern-Weil connection transgression is
Its integral on a closed four-manifold is zero by the Generalized Stokes theorem. This proves connection independence of ; the integrality is the global Chern class statement, not merely a consequence of the local formula.
The local primitive of the Second Chern form is the Chern-Simons three-form
Here we continue to use , so . The cubic coefficient is forced by the exterior derivative. In the graded cyclic matrix trace, and , the latter because cycling one degree-one factor past the other three changes its sign. Therefore
Matrix-valued differential forms require both matrix order and the graded signs; treating all factors as commuting scalars would lose this derivation.
The Chern-Simons three-form depends on a local trivialization and is not itself gauge-invariant. For the Yang-Mills gauge transformation convention , set . The gauge change of the Chern-Simons three-form is
The last term is closed by the Maurer-Cartan equation. On a closed three-manifold its integral is an integer with the fundamental normalization. Consequently the Chern-Simons integral is naturally defined modulo integers, while its exponential is invariant under large Yang-Mills gauge transformations for integer level .
This also explains why a nonzero Chern number is compatible with : need not be a globally defined three-form. On , trivialize over two hemispheres and let on their common equator , oriented as the boundary of the northern hemisphere. The Generalized Stokes theorem and the gauge-change formula give
For , this is the degree of the transition map, with compatible group orientation; for it is the corresponding integer in . Thus the Second Chern number measures the obstruction to choosing one trivialization over the whole four-sphere.
A simpler First Chern class example is a line bundle over . Write and choose local real potentials
They have common curvature , so . Their difference corresponds to the transition function , which is single-valued exactly when . This illustrates how the global integer arises from patching, rather than from an arbitrary flux normalization.
In physics, these constructions distinguish topological sectors of Yang-Mills instantons and relate four-dimensional characteristic densities to three-dimensional boundary actions. The Chern-Simons three-form itself gives a metric-independent gauge action in three dimensions. On a closed manifold its first variation is
so its classical equation is . The common thread is that a local expression in the connection one-form records global topology: curvature produces the invariant Chern number, while its local Chern-Simons three-form primitive retains gauge and boundary information.
For a one-component superfluid with nonzero order-parameter magnitude on a closed loop, the phase defines a map from the loop into the circle. Its winding number is
The fundamental group means that smooth deformations preserving nonzero amplitude cannot change this integer. With superfluid velocity , it gives quantized circulation . A vortex core permits the order parameter to vanish and carries the winding; a superfluid phase slip changes a loop's winding when a core crosses it. For paired neutral fermions, the relevant condensed-object mass is the pair mass.
For charged pairs, gauge-covariant phase rigidity gives fluxoid and flux quantization in a superconductor:
The magnitude of the pair flux quantum is . Magnetic flux alone approaches an integer multiple of this value when the circulating-velocity term on a bulk contour is negligible. The topological condition is not a claim that an arbitrary finite loop has exactly quantized magnetic flux independent of its screening current.
There are also momentum-space invariants, distinct from real-space vortex winding. A fully gapped two-dimensional Bogoliubov--de Gennes Hamiltonian can have a Chern number obtained from its occupied quasiparticle bands' Berry curvature. In a chiral paired model it can protect edge modes while the bulk gap and relevant symmetry class are maintained. Such an invariant can change only when those assumptions fail, for example through a bulk gap closing. A nodal d-wave state requires a different analysis; it is not automatically a fully gapped Chern superconductor.
Topological quantum matter Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-18
Topological quantum matter has robust low-energy properties controlled by global topology rather than local order parameters.
The central question is which quantum states can be joined by a smooth change of a local Hamiltonian while keeping a nonzero bulk spectral gap. A Chern insulator makes this question concrete: two band insulators can have different integer Chern numbers, forcing a gap closure between them. The Haldane phase supplies a one-dimensional example in which a protecting symmetry matters. These are distinct from intrinsic topological order, with its anyons and topology-dependent ground-state degeneracy. The Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless transition concerns a separate mechanism involving vortices; topology organizes more than one kind of physical phenomenon.
The only zeros of , modulo the reciprocal lattice, are the two Dirac valleys in graphene,
At these momenta . Thus the two Dirac mass coefficients, measured in energy units, are , with . For ,
The two Dirac cones have opposite orientation, encoded by . A scalar sublattice offset gives equal-sign Dirac masses; imaginary second-neighbour hopping at gives opposite-sign Dirac masses. Both mechanisms open valley gaps
An observed band gap alone therefore cannot establish a Chern insulator. In particular, the gapless nearest-neighbour model of graphene and its sublattice-mass deformation should not be confused with the topologically nontrivial Haldane model.
A band gap closes when all three components of vanish. Since only at the two valleys, the phase boundaries are exactly . Usually one valley becomes massless; at , , both do. The occupied-band Chern number is undefined at every such touching, even if a numerical momentum grid misses its location.
