AGO3 Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
A Drosophila Piwi-family protein that participates with Aubergine in piRNA ping-pong amplification.
Complementary cleavage relationships between small-RNA molecular populations can reinforce production of transposon-targeting guides. The resulting signature links sequence recognition to amplification rather than simply accumulating every small RNA indiscriminately. [ref]
Aubergine Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
A Drosophila Piwi-family protein participating in germline piRNA-mediated regulation, including ping-pong amplification.
It binds selected small RNAs and participates in transcript recognition and cleavage within a germline defence network. Its relationship with AGO3 helps amplify appropriate guide molecular populations, linking molecular specificity to transposon control. [ref]
GRO-cap Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
A nuclear run-on and capped-end mapping method for characterizing transcription initiation. It is useful for comparing nascent initiation with the surviving mature transcript molecular population.[ref]
GTPase Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
An enzyme hydrolysing GTP to GDP and phosphate. Many act as nucleotide-controlled switches: hydrolysis changes the state, and nucleotide exchange restores a GTP-bound molecular population for another cycle.
Molecular population 2026-11-05
A molecular population is a specified collection of molecules, or the count occupying a selected molecular state. The definition includes the chemical species, compartment, time and state classification. If molecules occupy state out of total, its population fraction is and for an exhaustive, nonoverlapping classification.
An experimental signal need not equal that fraction. In a simple additive fluorescence model,
where is the detected molecular brightness, the fluorescence per molecule in state . If two states are equally populated but one is twice as bright, it contributes two thirds of the signal, despite containing half the molecules. Equal molecular counts are therefore not inferred from equal signal contributions without a response model.
Single-molecule fluorescence microscopy can resolve trajectories or individual emitters, while ensemble methods average over many molecules. Detection, labeling and state-dependent response still determine which molecular population is represented. A conformational population is one important special case, where the classification records molecular shape rather than chemical identity.
Protein complex Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
A protein complex is an assembly of associated proteins. Its composition specifies component identities and their stoichiometry; variable accessory occupancy and transient partners can make the assembly a molecular population of related forms rather than one fixed object.
RNA half-life Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
The time for half of an RNA molecular population to disappear under specified conditions. For a homogeneous first-order decay process it equals ; ongoing synthesis and changing biological cell states complicate abundance measurements.
Teemu Kivioja 2026-11-05
Teemu Kivioja led work on counting original nucleic-acid molecules using unique molecular identifiers. A sequence label attached before amplification lets descendants of one starting molecule be recognized, so repeated reads from that molecule need not be mistaken for many independent originals.[ref]
For example, a hundred reads with one valid molecular identifier can represent one amplified starting molecule, whereas a hundred different valid identifiers can represent many originals. Identifier collisions and sequencing errors complicate that idealization. The contribution links molecular population measurement to an explicit observation model, separating amplification yield from original molecular abundance.
