For an infinite subset , repeatedly selecting the least element not yet used gives a bijection . The well-order ensures each minimum exists, infinitude ensures the remaining set is nonempty, and strict increase gives injectivity. If were omitted forever, all selected values would be at most , impossible inside the finite set .
Independence system 2026-10-14
An independence system consists of a finite set and a nonempty family of subsets such that and imply . This is the hereditary condition: deleting chosen elements keeps a selection admissible. In particular, the empty set belongs to . An independence system becomes a matroid when it also satisfies the matroid independence axioms for exchange. The hereditary nonmatroid greedy obstruction shows why deletion alone does not justify a greedy algorithm.
Independent family of sets 2026-10-14
A family of subsets of is independent when every finite choice of distinct members and their complements has nonempty intersection. Write and in the displayed condition. Every assignment of zero or one to the family then gives a collection with the finite intersection property, which can be extended to an ultrafilter.
Independent set (graph theory) 2026-10-14
An independent set selects mutually compatible objects when an edge of a graph represents a conflict. For example, if vertices are activities and edges join activities that cannot occur together, an independent set is a collection that can share one time slot. Finding the largest such collection is measured by the independence number.[ref]
https://introtcs.org/public/lec_12_NP.html. Barak, Introduction to Theoretical Computer Science, Chapter 14, The independent set problem
In a finite simple graph , an independent set is a subset with no edge joining two selected vertices:The empty set and every singleton set are independent sets. In the cycle graph drawn under vertex cover, is an independent set, but is not: the closing edge joins those two vertices. Choosing nonconsecutive labels is insufficient unless the wraparound edge is checked.
An independent set of maximum size has cardinality equal to the independence number. Being unable to add another vertex only makes an independent set inclusion-maximal. In the star graph , the centre alone is inclusion-maximal, since it is adjacent to every leaf, but the three leaves form a larger independent set. This distinction mirrors the difference between an inclusion-minimal vertex cover and a minimum vertex cover.
Every independent set has a vertex cover as its complement of a set; a largest independent set has a minimum vertex cover as its complement. In every proper vertex colouring, each colour class is an independent set, so graph coloring partitions the vertices into mutually compatible groups.
Independent set of a matroid 2026-10-14
A matroid independent set is a subset belonging to the family . Independence refers to the chosen matroid: for a linear matroid it means linear independence, and for a graphic matroid it means that the chosen edges contain no graph cycle. It is different from an independent set, which selects vertices with no edge between them.
Infimum and supremum 2026-10-14
For a subset of a partially ordered set, its infimum is its greatest lower bound and its supremum is its least upper bound. An upper bound only has to lie above every member; the supremum is the smallest such bound. A lower bound lies below every member; the infimum is the largest such bound. These definitions identify the exact edges of a set even when neither edge belongs to it.
For example, and both have infimum zero and supremum one. Only has a minimum and a maximum: those must be actual members of the set. The set has infimum zero without a minimum, but its supremum one is also its maximum. Such examples distinguish a bound from an attained extremal value. [ref].
For a nonempty subset of the real numbers, completeness of the real numbers guarantees a real supremum when it is bounded above, and a real infimum when it is bounded below. The bound and the ambient partially ordered set both matter: has supremum in the real numbers, but no supremum in the rational numbers. The detailed explanation belongs to completeness of the real numbers.
Why are unattained bounds useful? They specify a precise limiting target. In mathematical optimization, on has infimum zero but no global minimizer. The inputs for give a minimizing sequence: their objective values approach zero without ever reaching it. Bounds therefore describe what approximation can achieve even when no feasible input is best. The approximation property of an infimum and approximation property of a supremum express this idea quantitatively.
Infinite Dedekind-finite set 2026-10-05
An infinite Dedekind-finite set is an infinite set with no subset that is a countably infinite set. The name Dedekind set is sometimes used for this combination of properties. Under the axiom of choice no such set exists; results about these sets must avoid obtaining arbitrary enumerations of finite subsets by unstated choices.
An inner model of ZF containing all ambient subsets of computes the same countable ordinals as the ambient universe. Every ambient countably infinite ordinal has a well-order code coded by a subset of , hence that code belongs to ; finite ordinals are already shared. The Mostowski collapse theorem inside recovers the actual ordinal and its countability witness. Conversely any countability witness in remains one outside. If also contains the full power set of as a set, its Continuum hypothesis would give an ambient bijection from onto that same power set. Thus an ambient failure of this well-orderable formulation of the Continuum hypothesis is preserved in such an inner model. No internal axiom of choice is required for this argument.
Interior (topology) Created 2026-09-29 Updated 2026-10-14
The interior of a subset of a topological space is the union of all open sets contained in , equivalently the largest open subset of . A point lies in exactly when it has an open neighbourhood contained in . In a metric space, this says that some open ball , with , is contained in . The interior therefore identifies the points with room to move locally while staying in . [ref]
For the half-open interval in the real line, . Every point strictly between the endpoints has a sufficiently small open ball inside , but every open ball about zero also contains negative points. Although , it is not in the interior; it is a boundary point instead. Together, the interior and closure bracket the original subset: .
The ambient topological space matters: for with its subspace topology, , whereas . The diagram accompanying boundary of a set illustrates the relative open ball at zero. A subset is open exactly when , and taking the interior twice has the same effect as taking it once. The complement identity links interior directly to closure.
Journal replay 2026-10-14
Reinstalling the complete new images of a committed file-system transaction after a crash. An uncommitted journal payload is ignored. Rewriting the same image has idempotence: repeating it gives the same contents, unlike performing "append four more bytes" again. If recovery itself crashes, retaining the journal until the journal checkpoint is durable allows the same recovery to restart.
The second diagram exhausts the small full-data model. A triple lists in that order; a bit is 1 exactly when the corresponding new record has persisted. Before commit, any of the subsets of journal payload records can be durable, while every final-location triple is
000. After commit, the journal triple is 111, while any of the eight final-location triples can be durable. Retirement adds one state: the live journal is gone and the final-location triple is 111. Thus there are distinct abstract crash states. Waiting for a storage flush without another record reaching persistence does not create an additional state. Retirement is modeled as an atomic change of live-log status: old payload bytes may remain physically present but are no longer part of the live journal. All 17 abstract crash states recover to the old or new three-record append under the stated storage flush and atomic storage write assumptions
. Details. The short correctness argument has three cases. Before commit, final locations are unchanged. With commit, the complete journal payload restores
111 regardless of the current final-location subset. After retirement, 111 is already durable. Each of the six partial final-location triples is repairable because its journal is retained. The enumeration is exhaustive for these records and phase rules; it excludes torn records, dishonest flush completion, media corruption, journal reuse across several file-system transactions and failures of the recovery code. It is a model check, not a measured crash test of ext4. Knaster forcing 2026-10-07
Every uncountable subset of a Knaster forcing has an uncountable pairwise compatible subset. The property implies the countable chain condition for forcing. Finite Cohen forcing has this property by the delta-system lemma and agreement on the finite root. A Knaster forcing times any CCC forcing is CCC
Limit point Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
A limit point of a subset of a topological space is a point whose every neighbourhood meets . Thus is a limit point of in the real line, even though . In contrast, an isolated point of belongs to its closure but is not a limit point of . This distinction separates limit points from the more inclusive notion of an adherent point.
Linear matroid 2026-10-14
A linear matroid has a finite ground set indexing a family of vectors in a vector space over a specified field. A subset of labels is a matroid independent set precisely when its vectors are linearly independent. Labels distinguish repeated vectors; the ground set is not required to consist of distinct numerical vectors. The matroid bases correspond to bases for the linear span of all the supplied vectors.
Exchange outline. The linear span of linearly independent vectors has dimension . If , not all the linearly independent vectors indexed by can lie in that linear span. A vector outside it can be added to . Heredity follows because a linear dependence in a subset would also be a linear dependence in the full selection.
