Eddy-current damping is electromagnetic damping in which motion of an electrical conductor through a magnetic field induces circulating electric currents, producing an opposing force and Joule heating. In the cart experiment it approximates viscous damping over the fitted range; spatial variation of the magnetic field or changes in velocity can limit that approximation.
