Electric quadrupole moment 2026-10-14
The trace-free electric quadrupole moment is a symmetric tensor measuring the second-order term in an electric multipole expansion. For a localized charge distribution its contribution to the far-field electrostatic potential is , with summation over indices. The moment may be nonzero even when the total electric charge or electric dipole moment is nonzero; it should not be confused with an electric quadrupole whose lower moments vanish. Changing the origin generally changes the tensor when lower moments are nonzero.
A thin disk of radius in carries uniform surface charge density . Summing the Coulomb potential of concentric rings gives the displayed axis potential, with zero reference at infinity. Put , use spherical coordinates , and let . The near-center expansion, separately harmonic above and below the charged sheet, isThe absolute value represents the jump in normal electric field across the sheet; a single regular solid harmonic series cannot describe both half-spaces simultaneously. The constant and quadratic coefficients follow from the positive-axis Taylor series, and reflection symmetry supplies the other half-space. The far-field multipole expansion isThe monopole is the total charge, the dipole vanishes by reflection symmetry, and the next term is the axisymmetric electric quadrupole. These expansions converge for within each source-free half-space and for in the exterior, respectively; at a point of the sheet their potentials have continuous limiting values but their normal derivatives differ.
Ion trap Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
An ion trap confines an ion using electromagnetic fields, allowing repeated interrogation of the same particle. The name also covers related traps for an electron. A Paul trap uses an oscillating electric quadrupole field; a Penning trap combines a static electric quadrupole field with a static magnetic field. Confinement creates time to measure an energy level, frequency or magnetic dipole moment; it does not itself cool the particle or identify its internal quantum state.
The obstacle is Earnshaw's theorem. In a charge-free neighbourhood the static electric potential obeys Laplace's equation, . For a particle of fixed nonzero electric charge , the potential energy is also a harmonic function. The maximum principle for harmonic functions excludes a strict interior minimum. For a quadratic example, the Hessian matrix has zero trace; it cannot have three positive eigenvalues. A static purely electric field therefore cannot supply three-dimensional stable confinement of a free point electric charge. Time variation in a Paul trap, and the velocity-dependent Lorentz force in a Penning trap, change the assumptions of this argument.

. Original comparison of the ideal fields derived below. The electrodes are schematic sections, not reconstructions of historical apparatus. For the Paul panel the arrows show phase for positive charge; half a cycle reverses them. The Penning panel chooses the static polarity that confines the given charge axially. Details.CO and CO are discrete molecules, whereas the other oxides gain stability from extended bonding or ionic lattices. carbon's compact 2p orbitals overlap effectively with oxygen 2p orbitals, allowing strong multiple bonds that satisfy the valence requirements within small molecules. Intermolecular forces between CO or CO molecules are much weaker than those internal bonds, so low condensation temperatures and gaseous states at room conditions are unsurprising. CO is nonpolar overall but still has London dispersion forces and interactions between electric quadrupoles; “nonpolar” does not mean no attraction.
For larger Group 14 atoms, overlap with oxygen 2p orbitals is less effective for strong localized multiple bonding. SiO instead forms an extended network of SiO tetrahedra with each oxygen bridging two silicon atoms. Breaking or melting the network involves much more than separating intact SiO molecules. The Si–O electronegativity difference is , so these are strongly polar covalent bonds rather than evidence for a molecular solid.
For Pb–O the difference is , and ionic Pb/O or Pb/O descriptions provide useful starting points, with appreciable covalent contributions. PbO has layered structures with asymmetric oxygen coordination consistent with a stereochemically active 6s pair. A common PbO structure is rutile-like, with PbO octahedra linked through oxygen. Extended lattice interactions account for their solid states.[ref]

The similar Si–O and Pb–O electronegativity differences show why a single difference threshold cannot determine the entire bonding type, coordination number or structure. Successive reflections in the two grounded planes require four charges:Their total charge and electric dipole moment vanish. Applying the second-order expansion from part (a), the terms proportional to , , and also cancel, while the mixed terms add. ThusThis is an electric quadrupole potential.
For large , expand in to obtainThe axisymmetric exterior multipole expansion replaces each on the positive axis by . Reflection symmetry eliminates the odd multipoles, soThe leading term is the potential of total charge concentrated at the center; the next is its electric quadrupole correction. On either axis , recovering the same even axis potential.
Penning trap 2026-10-18
A Penning trap uses a static electric quadrupole field for axial confinement and a static axial magnetic field for transverse confinement. The Lorentz force bends a moving electric charge's trajectory without doing work. An RF probe may interrogate a trapped particle, but an RF confining voltage is unnecessary in this ideal model. This makes the Penning trap useful for relating cyclotron frequencies and spin precession to a common magnetic field.
Planar quadrupole potential 2026-10-18
This electric potential is harmonic and independent of . Its electric field is linear in transverse position, with a saddle at the origin. For , field lines approach along the axis and leave along the axis; off-axis field lines satisfy . Equipotentials satisfy . This is a local planar electric quadrupole geometry, not the decaying far field of an isolated three-dimensional quadrupole.
RF-averaged trapping potential 2026-10-18
Write the RF electric field as , where is a real peak-amplitude vector with a common drive phase. Decompose the trajectory into a slow position and fast displacement . Over one short RF cycle, hold fixed. The leading fast equation and solution areThe homogeneous slow part is absorbed into . Expand the electric field to first order in and average, using :The second equality uses zero curl in the quasistatic RF electric field. This derives an effective potential energy, not an extra static electric potential. Its dependence confines either sign of electric charge towards a field-amplitude minimum. Using an RMS field instead would give a coefficient multiplying .
The approximation needs fast displacement small compared with the field's variation length and slow angular frequencies small compared with . In the stated electric quadrupole model, small and of order provide a controlled regime, away from stability boundaries. Add when . For the result isFor the pure RF case, . The square-root condition describes leading local restoring curvature; it is not a substitute for full Mathieu equation stability. Collisions, departures from the ideal electric quadrupole, and a displaced RF null require further analysis.
