For a nonconstant polynomial over any field, use triangular substitutions , , where exceeds every exponent in its support. Base- weights distinguish all original monomials, so the transformed polynomial has a unique highest power with coefficient in . Rescale to make it monic. The monic polynomial quotient is finite free over , yielding a finite flat projection. The nonlinear substitution works over finite fields as well as infinite ones; a generic linear-direction argument alone would not do so.
For an explicit basis extension in , start with , where . Its linear span is the line . Adding preserves linear independence, because is outside that line, and gives a basis. Every vector has the finite linear combination
The vector cannot be added while preserving linear independence: it is already in the linear span. Many choices outside the line work, so maximality does not select a unique basis.
Figure 1.
Extending one independent vector to a basis of the real plane
. Left: u spans only the blue line, and 2u is redundant. Right: adding w outside that line yields a basis spanning the entire plane. This finite-dimensional illustration is not a proof of basis existence in arbitrary dimension. Details.
For a finite-dimensional vector space with a supplied finite spanning set, a greedy algorithm scans the list, retaining each vector precisely when it is outside the linear span of those already retained. Starting with a linearly independent , the same scan adjoins only the needed vectors. Retained vectors remain linearly independent, and every skipped vector is in the final linear span, so the result is a basis containing . Finite reasoning needs no axiom of choice.
For an arbitrary vector space, this finite stopping argument is unavailable. Accepting Zorn's lemma asserts existence of a maximal element once every chain in a partial order has an upper bound; it supplies no general computational recipe. Over ZF, Zorn's lemma, the axiom of choice and the well-ordering theorem are equivalent. Particular infinite vector spaces can still have explicit bases, such as for the vector space of univariate polynomials over a specified field; infinity alone does not force a nonconstructive argument.[ref]
Finite integral domain is a field Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-14
Multiplication by a nonzero element of an integral domain is injective. If the ring is finite, that map is surjective, so its image contains one and the multiplier has a multiplicative inverse. Hence every nonzero element is invertible and the ring is a field.
A commutative Artinian ring has finite composition length as a module over itself. It has finitely many maximal ideals, and its Jacobson radical is nilpotent. The Chinese remainder theorem makes a finite product of fields; each Artinian module has finite-dimensional components over those fields. Adding their lengths along the finite radical filtration proves the assertion, and in particular the ascending chain condition.
Finite multiplicative subgroup of a field is cyclic Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-09-24
Every finite subgroup of the multiplicative group of a field is cyclic. If is the exponent of , commutativity lets one combine elements whose orders realize the prime-power factors of , producing an element of order . Every element of is a root of , so the Lagrange root bound over a field gives . Since , equality holds and that element generates .
Finite representation type of a quiver Created 2026-09-28 Updated 2026-10-06
A quiver has finite representation type over a field when it has only finitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable finite-dimensional representations.
Finite-type integer algebra Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
A unital commutative ring generated by finitely many elements under addition and multiplication, starting from the image of the integers. Equivalently it is a quotient of a finite-variable polynomial ring over . localization of a ring at one element remains finite type, since . Generation here is as an algebra, not merely as a field extension when the ring happens to be a field.
Formally real field Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-07
A field is formally real when is not a finite sum of squares. The Artin-Schreier ordering criterion says this is equivalent to the existence of an ordering compatible with the field operations. Such a field has characteristic zero and embeds into a real closed field.
Formal power series module Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-06
For a vector space over a field , its formal power series module is . It is complete for the filtration by . The ordinary tensor product embeds in it and consists of series whose coefficients span a finite-dimensional vector subspace; it equals if is finite-dimensional. The inclusion is proper for infinite-dimensional , as shown by a series with linearly independent coefficients.
Frobenius algebra 2026-10-06
A finite-dimensional unital associative algebra over a field admitting a linear functional whose pairing is nondegenerate. The dual numbers with functional extracting the nilpotent coefficient are an example; semisimplicity is unnecessary.
In characteristic , the displayed map on the cocenter of a finite-dimensional algebra is additive and Frobenius-semilinear. Expand a th power into words: nonconstant cyclic-word orbits have length and cancel modulo commutators. Also and have the same cocenter class, so the map kills additive commutators and is well defined.
Over a perfect field with split semisimple quotient, the stable image of this map has dimension equal to the number of simple modules of the algebra. Indeed, the kernel of has representatives in the nilpotent Jacobson radical, so an iterate kills it. On the semisimple algebra quotient, each matrix-block coordinate is a field trace, and . For a split semisimple quotient, Frobenius is bijective on every coordinate. In a group algebra over an algebraically closed field, the stable image has the p-regular element conjugacy classes as its basis, proving the simple-module counting theorem.
Galois character Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
A Galois character is a continuous one-dimensional Galois representation: the absolute Galois group acts by multiplication by a scalar in a coefficient field . A quadratic character over a coefficient field of characteristic different from two has values in ; after identifying this group with , its kernel fixes a quadratic extension, or the base field for the trivial character. Its restriction to an inertia group is trivial exactly when that extension is unramified at the corresponding place.
For a nonzero finitely generated algebra over a field, choose a finite-dimensional generating vector subspace containing . The dimension is . Changing only rescales the filtration index by bounded factors. A nonzero finite-dimensional algebra has dimension zero; a polynomial ring in variables has dimension . The zero algebra is often assigned dimension .
Global dimension 2026-10-06
The global dimension of a ring is the supremum of the projective dimensions of all its modules, allowing infinity. It measures the longest projective resolution needed by any module. For a field it is zero, since every module is a vector space and hence free.
Global regular function 2026-10-05
A global regular function is a global section of the structure sheaf of a scheme, defined on the entire scheme. These functions form its ring . On an affine scheme this recovers the defining ring; on a positive-dimensional projective complete intersection it consists only of constants over the base field.
Global regular functions on projective space Created 2026-10-03 Updated 2026-10-07
The only regular functions defined on all of a nonempty projective space over a field are the constants:
For , this also follows by gluing and inside : their intersection is .
Graded module 2026-10-06
A graded module over a graded ring is an -module with a direct sum decomposition satisfying . A graded homomorphism preserves these degrees. Over a polynomial ring with positive variable degrees, a finitely generated module of this kind is bounded below and has finite-dimensional graded components over the coefficient field.
Graded Nakayama lemma Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-07
For a positively graded ring with degree-zero part a field, put . A bounded-below graded module with is zero: a nonzero homogeneous element of least degree would have to be a sum of positive-degree coefficients times elements of lower degree. Hence homogeneous lifts of a basis of generate .
Group ring Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-09-28
The group ring consists of finite formal sums with coefficients in a ring . Addition is coefficientwise and multiplication extends the group operation and multiplication in distributively. A group algebra is the case in which is a field.
