Fourier transformation sends to . Write the connected current three-point function as the two full Dirac propagators joined to the amputated vertex:
The two contact terms remove one propagator at a time. Multiplying the transformed identity by on the left and on the right yields
This is the momentum-space Ward-Takahashi identity for the full vertex and full propagator.
The analogous Grassmann Gaussian integral, normalized by , gives
with the free Dirac propagator
Indeed .
For four-momentum flowing along the fermion flow, the momentum space Feynman rules are
The scalar propagator and Dirac propagator invert their respective quadratic kernels. The interaction vertex follows by expanding , fixing its sign. Species is conserved along each open fermion line; there is no vertex changing species 1 into species 2.
An interaction vertex carries with inward four-momenta. Impose momentum conservation and integrate each independent loop momentum with . Include the closed fermion loop sign for every fermion loop, the relevant fermionic signs when rearranging external states, and the Feynman-diagram symmetry factor. External incoming and outgoing fermions carry and ; incoming and outgoing antifermions carry and . An external real scalar field leg has factor 1 in an amputated scattering amplitude. The Feynman i-epsilon prescription specifies the poles.
For a connected amputated Feynman diagram, write for the number of independent loop momenta. Each loop momentum integration scales as , each internal scalar propagator as , and each internal Dirac propagator as when both four-momenta and mass are scaled. The Yukawa coupling has mass dimension zero. Thus
Counting the two fermion ends and one scalar end at each interaction vertex, and using connectedness, gives
Consequently , , and
The requested exponent requires amputation and removal of the overall momentum delta function. An ordinary unamputated connected Green function has an additional external scalar propagators, giving mass dimension after stripping that delta function, or if it is retained. For a concrete check, the free two-point scalar propagator scales as , not . The exponent is the engineering result for the amputated object. A fixed renormalization scale introduces logarithms; the displayed homogeneity is a naive power counting statement rather than an exact quantum scaling law at fixed subtraction scale.
More generally, with external scalar ends and external fermion ends, the same counting gives the superficial degree of divergence
This is an upper bound on the overall ultraviolet divergence. Numerator cancellations and Lorentz invariance may lower it; an apparently convergent whole Feynman diagram can still have ultraviolet subdivergences. Local subtraction of those ultraviolet subdivergences is required first.
For pure scalar ends, can require counterterms. Lorentz invariance reduces the two-point terms to a mass counterterm and wave-function renormalization; derivatives of a single scalar field are total derivatives, and a one-derivative cubic scalar term cannot be a Lorentz scalar. With two external fermions, requires their kinetic term and mass counterterm, while requires Yukawa coupling renormalization. Four external fermions give , so no independent four-fermion counterterm is required.
A complete counterterm Lagrangian consistent with the species symmetry can therefore be written
The vacuum energy density term matters for an unnormalized vacuum functional and cancels from normalized Green functions. The tadpole counterterm can impose . There is no symmetry of the massive Yukawa interaction, so linear, cubic and quartic scalar terms cannot be excluded. For instance, in a constant background the divergent fermion loop contribution contains , exhibiting all these powers. This is counterterm closure of a massive Yukawa theory.
The two species have identical couplings, so their common unitary flavour rotations preserve the Lagrangian density and their counterterms can be chosen species independent. Equality of the scalar and fermion masses, however, is not protected: and are independent. Including the displayed finite set of operators yields a renormalizable quantum field theory. Restricting the bare Lagrangian density to the terms printed in the question is not closed under renormalization.
The momentum space Feynman rules use the scalar propagator and two Dirac propagators
The cubic scalar field interaction vertex is . Each of the two flavour-changing Yukawa coupling interaction vertices, and , has factor in Dirac spinor indices. A fermion flow arrow continues through each interaction vertex, but its species changes. There is no or interaction vertex.
Every interaction vertex carries with inward four-momenta. Integrate each independent loop momentum with , divide by the Feynman-diagram symmetry factor, and include a minus sign and a gamma-matrix trace for each closed fermion loop. The is the Feynman i-epsilon prescription.
For an amputated scattering amplitude, incoming fermions supply and outgoing fermions supply ; incoming antifermions supply and outgoing antifermions supply . An external real scalar field particle supplies . Use the standard relativistic normalization of a one-particle state; the external factors belong to that normalization and the Lorentz-invariant phase-space measure, rather than an additional factor in the invariant scattering amplitude.
Let count internal scalar and fermion lines and count independent loops in a connected amputated Feynman diagram. At large loop momentum, the scalar propagator falls as and the Dirac propagator falls as , including its numerator. Each loop integration is . The nonderivative interaction vertices add no powers. Therefore
Count endpoints of each kind of line and use the connected-graph loop order identity:
Eliminating gives
The cancellation of reflects their dimensionless couplings; every insertion of the positive-dimensional improves the superficial degree of divergence by one.
The printed exact homogeneity is shorthand for ultraviolet power counting, not an identity for a massive integrated correlation function. For example, even the free amputated scalar two-point vertex obeys , which differs from when . Logarithmic divergences, actual numerator cancellations and ultraviolet subdivergences also require separate treatment.
Expanding gives the Feynman vertex
There is one scalar leg and a continuous oriented fermion line; no extra factor is absorbed into . The Dirac propagator is , where . Each closed fermion loop supplies a minus sign.

The tadpole diagram is proportional to
because both numerator traces vanish by a. This is zero before the loop momentum integration.
For either orientation of the triangle Feynman diagram, let be its three internal four-momenta. Its numerator trace is
After using cyclic property of the trace, each expanded term is a trace of times at most three ordinary gamma matrices. Such traces vanish in four dimensions. For an odd number of ordinary gamma matrices, conjugation by changes the sign. For two ordinary gamma matrices, the contracted Clifford algebra identity gives
The zero-matrix case is a. Hence both the one-point and three-point one-loop bosonic vertices vanish, independently of their external momenta. No cancellation between different loop orientations or delicate shift of a divergent integral is needed.
Put and . The Dirac adjoint of the printed mode expansion of a Dirac field is
The Fock vacuum is annihilated by . The canonical anticommutation relations therefore give the two non-time-ordered vacuum expectation values
In the first line, the only surviving contraction is ; in the second it is . Both of these unordered contractions have positive coefficients.
However, fermionic time ordering includes a minus sign when it interchanges two odd fields:
Thus the result following from the stated canonical anticommutation relations and standard time ordering is
The second term printed with a plus sign is not correct for standard fermionic time ordering. Its plus-plus expression would be an ungraded chronological product. The missing minus cannot be absorbed by a phase choice for or , since each spin sum contains a spinor and its adjoint.
For comparison with the conventional Dirac propagator, define and let denote this free Dirac field's mass. Then
The exchange of the spinor indices is essential: is the component of , not its component.
The corrected expression in d is a vacuum two-point function, or Wick contraction, of the free Dirac field. It equals the negative spinor transpose of the usual Dirac propagator with reversed spacetime arguments. It supplies the internal fermion lines in Feynman diagrams, rather than a position-space detection probability.
For , creates an antiparticle and annihilates it. The term describes positive-energy antiparticle propagation from to . For , creates a particle and annihilates it. The term describes positive-energy particle propagation from to , with the minus sign required by exchanging the odd operators in fermionic time ordering. Neither term describes a physical negative-energy excitation.
The Heaviside step functions select these chronological alternatives. The factors are on-shell plane waves with , and is the positive-energy Lorentz-invariant phase-space measure. The sum over includes the two spin states. With standard relativistic spinor normalization, the fermion spin sums are
They encode the spinor structure and solve the corresponding on-shell Dirac equations. In particular, the corrected answer can also be written
The Feynman i-epsilon prescription specifies the temporal boundary conditions of the Green function; its positive- and negative-frequency residues reproduce the two terms and their relative minus sign. With defined in d,
The contact term is fixed by the equal-time canonical anticommutation relations. Choosing a value for does not change the unequal-time sign demonstrated above.
Finally, microcausality requires field anticommutators to vanish at spacelike separation; the time-ordered vacuum two-point function itself need not vanish there. These facts are compatible with relativistic causality. The plus-plus expression printed in the paper lacks the fermionic sign needed for this standard Dirac propagator interpretation.

QED one-loop running-mass to pole-mass conversion Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-18
In quantum electrodynamics, the modified minimal subtraction scheme running mass differs from the perturbative pole mass by a finite correction. The displayed relation follows by evaluating the renormalized fermion self-energy at the mass shell and imposing a zero of the inverse Dirac propagator. The sign assigned to the self-energy insertion must be matched to its denominator convention; changing that naming convention does not change the conversion. A wave-function coefficient counterterm and multiplicative mass renormalization are also distinct: the coefficient of the mass term includes both at first order.
Three-photon fermion Ward identity Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-25
For tree electron-Positron annihilation into three photons, all six orders along the fermion line must be summed. Write and . Contracting an internal photon with its momentum gives when . Contracting an end photon removes its adjacent Dirac propagator by the external Dirac equation, with a minus sign at the electron end and a plus sign at the positron end. For either fixed order of the two uncontracted photons, the three insertion positions therefore telescope to zero. Summing their two orders proves the Ward identity. The mass terms in both remaining Dirac propagators are essential when . The result expresses the invariance of the scattering amplitude under .
Two-photon fermion Ward identity Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
The two photon orders in a tree-level charged-fermion amplitude must be summed. Contracting one photon vertex with its momentum writes the contracted slash as a difference of inverse Dirac propagators. The external Dirac equations remove the on shell inverse factors; the two remaining terms have equal size and opposite sign. Thus the sum vanishes under the momentum replacement although individual diagrams generally do not. This implements the gauge equivalence of photon polarization vectors.
Vacuum two-point function 2026-10-25
A two-field vacuum expectation value. Its ordered, time-ordered and anticommutator versions are different distributions. For a free Dirac field, fermionic time ordering combines the positive-energy particle and antiparticle contributions into a Dirac propagator. Its nonzero value at spacelike separation does not violate microcausality, which constrains the field anticommutator.

Four scalar Yukawa interactions on a closed fermion loop generate a scalar four-point one-particle-irreducible vertex. At high momentum four dirac propagators contribute , leaving a logarithmic four-dimensional ultraviolet divergence. Its local scalar-fourth-power term requires a quartic scalar coupling; scalar mass and field counterterms cannot cancel it.
