Triple-point cell 2026-10-14
A triple-point cell turns phase coexistence into a reproducible reference for thermometer calibration. The NIST water-cell demonstration uses a sealed glass vessel containing water of specified isotopic composition and an open central thermometer well. Cooling this well with solid carbon dioxide and alcohol freezes an ice mantle while leaving liquid water and its vapor. The coolant is outside the sealed sample; the sample's vapor space does not communicate with room air.[ref]

In the actual NIST cell-comparison experiment, newly frozen mantles were compared with an aged reference mantle in a controlled maintenance bath. A warm aluminium rod melted a thin inner layer around the well, allowing the mantle to rotate freely and establishing an ice–water interface close to the sensor. A standard platinum resistance thermometer and a resistance bridge measured the electrical resistance ratio to a calibrated, temperature-controlled reference resistor. Readings at two currents permitted extrapolation to zero electrical power, correcting self-heating; measured immersion depths supplied hydrostatic pressure corrections. Comparing preparations over time tested stabilization rather than assuming freshly frozen ice was ready.[ref]
Effects of different methods of preparation of ice mantles of triple point of water cells on the temporal behaviour of the triple-point temperatures by G. T. Furukawa and others. Furukawa, Mangum and Strouse, Effects of different methods of preparation of ice mantles of triple point of water cells on the temporal behaviour of the triple-point temperatures (1997), Abstract, §1 and §§3.2–3.5: aged reference, inner melt, bridge readout, zero-power and hydrostatic corrections
The inference is a reproducible fixed-point response for the thermometer, not a direct reading of three chemical potentials. The reference cell anchors the comparison; a water point alone does not determine a thermometer's response at every other temperature. The ideal argument excludes impurity and isotope variation, finite interface effects and unintended heat transfer; real cells also require adequate immersion and stable electrical references. Repeatability is evidence that these effects are controlled, not a reason to omit their uncertainty.
Since 20 May 2019 the kelvin has been defined through a fixed numerical value of the Boltzmann constant. The thermodynamic temperature of the water triple point is consequently a measured quantity with uncertainty, rather than an exact value imposed by the kelvin definition. Its continued use as an assigned reference on the International Temperature Scale of 1990 is a separate convention.[ref]

Two-atom neutron diffraction selection 2026-10-18
Choose a one-dimensional crystal with cell translation and two atoms per cell at and . Here is an intracell displacement, distinct from the interplanar spacing above. In a single-scattering approximation, a row of cells has scattering amplitudeThe sum selects reciprocal lattice positions as becomes large. At these positions, the two-site crystal basis structure factor and its squared magnitude areConsequently gives even reflections of strength and extinguishes the odd reflections. Choosing , instead gives and : the odd/even ratio is . Equal atomic numbers would not establish equal if the isotopes differ. The figure below plots these chosen coefficients, without assigning them to actual elements. Missing reflections can encode destructive wave interference within a cell, not the absence of matter at a site.
The University of Florida's Rotation Vibration Spectrum of the HCl Molecule, University of Florida laboratory protocol, printed pp. 2–3 and 10–11, uses a scanning Michelson interferometer for Fourier transform spectroscopy. An air-filled silicon-window cell supplies the background. Supervised preparation adds concentrated hydrogen chloride liquid; the cleaned cell subsequently receives DCl liquid. Acquisition settings are identical.
The readout is transmission or absorbance against spectroscopic wavenumber, resolving molecular rotation alongside stretching. Background addresses instrument and cell contributions; cleaning addresses carryover. Excessive absorption impairs analysis. Assigning isotopes and rotational branches precedes fitting band parameters to test isotope scaling of diatomic vibration. These are prescribed measurements, not numerical observations supplied here.[ref]

For a transparent ideal model, add the linear rigid rotor to the harmonic vibrational energy levels and assume the same frequency-valued rotational constant in both vibrational states:For a spin-free diatomic molecule with no electronic angular momentum, electric-dipole selection rules give for this vibrational absorption. Subtracting initial from final energy eigenvalues yieldsThese are two rotational branches about the vibrational band origin, not a single stretch line. For stipulated dimensionless values and , the first three R-branch positions are , and the first three P-branch positions are . There is no transition. The numbers illustrate level subtraction; they are not HCl measurements. Real upper and lower rotational constants differ, and centrifugal distortion shifts lines further.
Uranium-235 2026-10-18
A uranium isotope that is a principal fissile material in thermal-neutron reactors. Capturing a neutron produces excited uranium-236.
Uranium-239 Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
An unstable uranium isotope produced by neutron capture on uranium-238. Two successive beta-minus decays, through neptunium-239, lead to plutonium-239.
Uranium enrichment 2026-10-20
An increase in the fraction of a specified uranium isotope. Fuel-cycle accounting tracks feed, product, enrichment tails and separative work; it does not specify an uranium enrichment plant or its operating conditions.
