Reactor coolant 2026-10-20
Using the orbital order after 28 supplied in the simple shell model, proton counts 32 and 38 fill and , so the odd 39th proton occupies . With paired valence neutrons this gives a yttrium-91 ground-state prediction. The daughter has paired 40 protons and one neutron beyond the 50-neutron closure in , giving . The inferred ground-state beta transition is therefore first-forbidden unique. This is a stated paired-shell model deduction; an endpoint diagram alone does not determine the spin assignment or an evaluated isotope mass.
Single-particle nuclear magnetic moment Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
In the simplest nuclear shell model of an odd-mass number nucleus, paired nucleons contribute zero total angular momentum and magnetic dipole moment. The last unpaired nucleon supplies the nuclear spin and the stretched-state moment , where is the Landé g-factor and the nuclear magneton.
Using addition of angular momentum with givesFor , this reduces to . For , it givesThe free-nucleon orbital factors are for a proton and for a neutron. Residual nuclear interactions and configuration mixing can shift measured moments away from this ideal prediction. A single hole in an otherwise closed shell has the same stretched-state moment as a particle in that shell: removing the particle leaves total and moment .
Slow neutron 2026-10-18
A slow neutron has low kinetic energy relative to the fast neutrons commonly emitted in nuclear reactions. The term covers an energy range, rather than a single speed. A neutron moderator transfers kinetic energy to surrounding matter through collisions. Slowing a neutron can increase its chance of causing particular neutron capture reactions, even though each collision has reduced its kinetic energy. The Fermi slow-neutron activation experiment made this surprising distinction experimentally visible.
SNO solar-neutrino flavor experiment Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
In 2001, live days, reconstructed radius below and effective electron kinetic energy above gave a CC neutrino flux of for the assumed boron-8 spectrum. Source calibrations measured instrumental-cut signal loss. SNO's own CC–ES difference was ; comparison with Super-Kamiokande's precise ES flux gave evidence for non-electron active neutrinos. This was not an NC measurement.[ref]
In 2002 the pure-heavy water analysis used live days and a reconstructed kinetic-energy threshold. NC neutrons captured on deuterons emitted gamma rays, producing secondary electron light. The NC reaction threshold was , a different quantity. Californium-252 calibrated capture efficiency, but only detection efficiency after fiducial and energy cuts. Assays constrained backgrounds from radioactive decay and photodisintegration.[ref]
Direct Evidence for Neutrino Flavor Transformation from Neutral-Current Interactions in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory by Q. R. Ahmad and others. PDF pp. 2–3: neutron calibration, thresholds and backgrounds
Energy, radius and direction relative to the Sun statistically separated channels. Assuming the standard boron-8 spectral shape, the NC total active neutrino flux was , consistent with stellar structure predictions. The non-electron active component differed from zero by . This established active flavour conversion, without individually tagging muon neutrinos and tau neutrinos. It did not exclude every sterile admixture.[ref]
For in a sphere of radius , with zero surface density and regularity at the origin, the lowest spherically symmetric normal mode is . Substitution of in the radial Laplacian gives , and regularity removes the cosine solution. The Dirichlet boundary condition gives ; a radial mode with no interior zeros requires . Thus diffusion leakage suppresses growth below the displayed threshold, while the mode is stationary at equality. The expression at uses its continuous limit. In a linear neutron multiplication model this is the competition between bulk production and surface loss.
Tau-neutrino charged-current threshold 2026-10-25
For a nearly massless incident tau neutrino and stationary target of mass , the initial Mandelstam variables give . At threshold the final tau lepton and the lightest allowed recoil system have no relative momentum, so . This proves the formula. A free neutron recoil channel gives approximately ; an electron target has a different recoil and a threshold near .
Thermal neutron 2026-10-18
A thermal neutron belongs to a population approximately in thermal equilibrium with its surroundings. Such a population has a distribution of kinetic energies, not one fixed energy. The scale uses the Boltzmann constant and thermodynamic temperature; it is about at . The mean translational kinetic energy for a classical three-dimensional equilibrium population is . Not every slow neutron has reached this equilibrium.
Uranium-235 2026-10-18
A uranium isotope that is a principal fissile material in thermal-neutron reactors. Capturing a neutron produces excited uranium-236.
With only up/down valence quarks and no antiquarks, the quark number sum rule and leading parton model expression give the charge-squared number moment . The squared charges are for up and for down, so the proton has and the neutron has . Restricting the flavour list to up/down does not itself remove antiquarks; the no-sea assumption is essential for these individual moments.
Zirconium alloy 2026-10-20
An alloy based on zirconium. Low neutron absorption and corrosion behaviour motivate nuclear fuel cladding applications; irradiation growth, creep and hydrogen uptake remain constraints.
