BRST physical-state constraints of an open string Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-07
For a matter state tensored with the ghost oscillator vacuum, the BRST charge produces the independent ghost states and with coefficients and . Thus BRST closure is equivalent to and in this sector. It reproduces old covariant string quantization and the open bosonic string mass spectrum.
For integer target dimension , intercept and ordinary nonzero momentum, the old covariant string quantization conditions leave a positive-semidefinite physical inner product. Quotienting its physical null string states removes gauge degeneracy. A DDF operator basis displays positive transverse oscillators; below dimension 26 the remaining physical longitudinal sector can be organized as a unitary Virasoro algebra sector with central charge and highest weight zero. At this extra sector becomes null and the quotient reduces to the 24 transverse oscillators. The result concerns negative-norm states, not the removal of the bosonic tachyon, and it does not itself cancel the worldsheet Weyl anomaly of a subcritical matter theory.

Use one bosonic oscillator sector in old covariant string quantization, with the usual normal-ordering constant of a string . Its matter Virasoro algebra and Hermiticity convention areA physical string state satisfies and . Let be the oscillator vacuum with and . For a level-two descendant, the zero-mode condition gives , hence . The vacuum carrying this momentum is not itself a physical level-zero tachyon state; its descendant is the candidate physical state. With open-string normalization , the required momentum has .
The positive-mode conditions can be computed without assuming the answer. First,The latter follows by expanding and commuting to the right. Therefore gives , or . Similarly,At and the second condition is . Every with annihilates the level-two state by the same commutators, leaving only positive modes acting on the vacuum. ThusThis is the level-two scalar Virasoro null state.
For the norm, take the vacuum norm to be one, suppressing the continuum momentum delta function. The level-two Virasoro descendant Gram matrix isThe entries follow from , and , respectively. At ,Consequently the physical state at has norm squared zero. It is a spurious string state as well as physical: for any physical , . The null-state quotient of a string therefore identifies it with zero. The displayed norm formula away from 26 does not describe the norm of a physical , since the constraint then fails.
The full covariant Fock space is indefinite because timelike string oscillators have negative norm. The no-ghost theorem for the critical bosonic string states that the constraints at make the physical inner product positive semidefinite. Every physical state can be represented by a positive transverse state plus a physical null state. Modding out the latter leaves a positive physical space, rather than retaining negative-norm states and simply ignoring them.
One outline of the proof uses DDF operators. Their dimension-one contour construction commutes with the physical constraints and gives transverse oscillators with algebra . Their oscillator states have manifestly positive norm. The covariant constraints and spurious descendants can be organized triangularly in the remaining timelike and longitudinal oscillators. At the critical dimension the completeness step shows that their remaining physical contribution is null, so the 24 transverse DDF oscillators represent the whole quotient.
For integer at the same intercept , the no-ghost theorem below the critical bosonic dimension gives nonnegative physical norm as well. The analogous construction leaves a longitudinal Virasoro sector with central charge and highest weight zero; below 26 this is a unitary sector, not a source of negative norms. At 26 it becomes null. Thus the dimension bound is not a claim that the quotient in every subcritical dimension contains only transverse oscillator species. The argument assumes the ordinary nonzero-momentum sector where the reference null direction for the DDF construction can be chosen. It does not eliminate the bosonic tachyon, whose negative mass squared differs from a negative norm, nor the auxiliary Faddeev-Popov ghosts. Furthermore subcritical positivity alone does not make a pure -scalar Polyakov path integral Weyl-anomaly free; additional matter or conformal-factor dynamics must be addressed separately.

The Nambu–Goto action is invariant under worldsheet diffeomorphisms. Its canonical Nambu–Goto phase-space constraints areIn conformal gauge, , so these become . Their smeared generators implement the residual conformal transformations rather than independent propagating degrees of freedom. Classically their Fourier modes form the classical Virasoro constraint algebra. Quantization promotes them to the Virasoro algebra, and its constraints select the physical string states from the indefinite covariant Fock space.
For clarity, start with a Neumann boundary condition at both ends of an open string, . Its open-string mode expansion isCanonical quantization gives the string oscillator relationsWith , the worldsheet stress-energy tensor obeysSubstituting the open-string mode expansion into this quadratic expression derives the Virasoro generators:The colons mean normal ordering, placing the negative-mode creation operators to the left. The string level operator increases by when an oscillator is added.
Using the commutator once givesApplying this to the quadratic expression for produces , together with the double-contraction Virasoro central extension. To determine its coefficient, take and evaluate on a zero-momentum oscillator vacuum. Only the creation pairs with contribute, givingHere is the target spacetime dimension; the timelike free boson also contributes one to the central charge, since a double contraction contains two metric factors. ThusThis derives both the Virasoro generators and their quantum anomaly.
In old covariant string quantization, the physical-state Virasoro conditions for an open string arewhere is the normal-ordering constant of a string. Requiring all positive and negative modes to annihilate a state would contradict the nonzero Virasoro central extension; the positive-mode prescription is the appropriate covariant subsidiary condition. The zero-mode equation gives the open bosonic string mass spectrum,For a closed string, there are two commuting Virasoro algebras. With uncompactified zero modes, and . Imposing both positive-mode conditions and both zero-mode conditions gives the closed-string level matching and .
Covariance initially retains the timelike string oscillators. For example, has negative norm because . Its existence in the unconstrained space is not an inconsistency if it is absent from the physical quotient. The no-ghost theorem for the critical bosonic string states that, at and , the inner product on physical string states at ordinary nonzero momentum is positive semidefinite. After quotienting physical null string states, this physical space is represented by the 24 positive-norm transverse string oscillators.
A spurious string state has the form . Its inner product with every physical string state vanishes, by and . Whenever such a state is itself physical, it is a null string state and represents a gauge redundancy, not an extra polarization. Consequently the physical quotient has no negative-norm propagating states, and agrees with light-cone gauge in string theory. This is the significance of the theorem; a proof is not needed here. It does not eliminate the bosonic tachyon, whose negative mass squared is distinct from negative norm, nor does it remove the auxiliary worldsheet ghost fields used in gauge fixing.

Use a mostly-plus target metric tensor and the standard open-string mode expansion convention . The integer string oscillator level is , whose eigenvalues are nonnegative integers. Then , so the string mass-shell condition givesThe ground state is a tachyon, and the level-one state is massless. The physical string state conditions in old covariant string quantization areOnly the positive-mode Virasoro constraints annihilate a ket; their negative-mode partners annihilate the corresponding bra. Imposing both signs on every ket would contradict the nonzero Virasoro central extension.
The central charge comes from normal ordering the quadratic oscillator expressions. Classically their Poisson brackets have no central term. Quantum mechanically, moving annihilation operators through creation operators produces double contractions. From the oscillator commutator one obtains , which gives the noncentral part .
The coefficient is fixed by the free-boson Virasoro central term. On a formal zero-momentum vacuum, for ,The two contraction pairings giveHere ; the time coordinate contributes one, just as each spatial coordinate does. Comparing with the Virasoro algebra provesThis counts covariant target coordinates. It is distinct from the physical transverse polarizations. Including the central charge of reparameterization ghosts gives ; cancellation of the worldsheet Weyl anomaly gives the usual critical dimension of the bosonic string .
A general level-one state isThe zero-mode constraint requires . Since , the remaining nontrivial positive-mode constraint is ; all with act trivially at this level. Thus the polarization vector is transverse to a nonzero null momentum.
There is also a null string state . It is physical when and orthogonal to every physical polarization. The null-state quotient of a string therefore identifiesChoose . Transversality sets , and the null-state identification removes this common component. The remaining spatial components have positive norm. Hence the physical level-one states form a massless vector with polarizations, or 24 at the critical dimension. The removed component is gauge redundancy. States violating the constraints, including independent timelike negative-norm polarizations, are unphysical; physical null states are removed by the quotient rather than counted as additional particles.

The Polyakov action has independent worldsheet metric and embedding fields . Varying the metric before imposing a gauge givesWorldsheet diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations allow conformal gauge locally. The Weyl factor then cancels out of the classical action, leavingThese are free two-dimensional scalar fields, but the surviving metric equations requireEquivalently, and . Gauge fixing does not license dropping these Virasoro constraints.
For an ordinary open string, the boundary conditions relate the two chiral sectors. With , their independent Fourier generators areThe classical oscillator Poisson brackets give the classical Virasoro constraint algebraThus they are first-class constraints. In the quantum theory one applies normal ordering to the product and uses . The oscillator commutator givesFor example, for the extra vacuum term is . This exhibits the Virasoro central extension rather than concealing it in a classical constraint equation. The matter central charge is ; the worldsheet ghost fields have charge . Quantum consistency sets and the string intercept to one.
In old covariant string quantization the physical-state Virasoro conditions for an open string arePhysical string states are then identified modulo physical null string states. One does not impose both positive and negative generators as annihilation conditions: their central extension would obstruct that prescription. The resulting null-state quotient of a string agrees with the transverse light-cone spectrum at nonzero momentum.
At , the oscillator vacuum is a single spacetime scalar field with : the bosonic tachyon. At , write . The zero-mode equation gives , and gives . The null descendant identifies . This leaves 24 physical polarizations of a massless gauge vector.
At , use the level-two open-string polarization decompositionThe mass is . The oscillator commutators give all the nontrivial positive-mode conditions:Higher positive modes annihilate this level. To see the quotient explicitly, the 25 transverse-parameter null states , with , shiftThe additional level-two scalar Virasoro null state shiftsSubstitution into the two physical equations verifies the null-state conditions; the second residual is . Because is timelike, these null shifts span all components of , so choose a representative with . The physical conditions then say and . In the rest frame this is a traceless second-rank tensor in 25 spatial dimensions, with polarizations. The light-cone basis independently gives states and symmetric states . Hence
For the fermionic extension, an explicit convention prevents ambiguity in the signs. Keep worldsheet signature and useTake and the constant parameter to be real Grassmann-odd Majorana components, with . Put . Apart from the common factor , the combined Lagrangian isThe rigid transformations can be writtenor, in components,For the part, the bosonic variation is , while the fermionic variation is . Anticommuting the constant parameter past the fermion is essential in the second term. The first terms cancel. The other chiral component works in the same way, giving the chiral proof of rigid worldsheet supersymmetryThus the action is invariant off shell up to a boundary term. The transformation is a genuine supersymmetry: on its commutator for parameters is the translationOn the same translation follows using and ; the remaining cross terms are proportional to these Dirac equations. This is on-shell closure of rigid worldsheet supersymmetry. On a surface with boundary, compatible endpoint conditions must make the boundary flux vanish. On a compact worldsheet, a constant parameter must preserve the spin structure; the local identity alone does not make a constant transformation compatible with every antiperiodic sector.
The fermions contribute to the worldsheet stress-energy tensor and produce a fermionic superconformal current. In holomorphic normalization with ,The free-field contractions give and conformal weight for , where . Consequently the modes obey the N=1 super-Virasoro algebraDropping the central terms gives the classical graded constraint algebra. Integer gives the Ramond sector; half-integer gives the Neveu–Schwarz sector. In the displayed conformal-plane convention in the Ramond sector. Shifting to the Ramond vacuum-normal-ordered zero mode gives the usual Ramond supercurrent zero-mode square .
Rigid symmetry of matter already supplies these currents, but promoting their vanishing to new gauge constraints requires coupling to worldsheet supergravity and varying its worldsheet gravitino. In superconformal gauge one retains . The fermionic current constraints and their physical-state conditions extend the bosonic Virasoro conditions. The ghost charges are , so cancellation with gives the critical dimension of the RNS superstring ; the NS and Ramond intercepts are respectively and zero. This distinguishes the global supersymmetry established above from its locally gauged string completion.

Use target-space signature and let a dot between target vectors denote contraction with the Minkowski metric. Varying the string embedding map in the Polyakov action, with periodic variations around the closed string, givesThus the embedding equation of motion isThe independent worldsheet metric variation uses . It sets the worldsheet stress tensor to zero:In conformal gauge, , the Weyl factor cancels. Define worldsheet derivatives . The equations and Virasoro constraints reduce toEquivalently, , and . The free wave equation permits independent periodic left- and right-moving fields.
Take and the uncompactified closed-string mode expansionThe Virasoro generators are the Fourier coefficients of the two quadratic worldsheet stress tensors. Their quantum expressions areThe canonical commutation relations are , with an identical tilded algebra and commuting chiral sectors. Normal ordering places annihilation modes to the right. It gives , where , and similarly on the other side. In old covariant string quantization, physical string states obeymodulo physical null string states. Negative generators are adjoint constraints on bras, not further annihilation conditions on the same ket. In critical bosonic string theory, and the string intercept is . These closed-string physical-state Virasoro conditions implyThus the massless first closed-string level has , and its general state isTo derive the polarization tensor constraints, the oscillator algebra gives . Applying to this state replaces by ; the independent tilded condition replaces the other oscillator by . All higher positive generators annihilate the state automatically. ThereforeThere is no condition that the tensor trace vanish: each chiral side has only one oscillator, so neither nor imposes a trace condition. The null-state quotient of a string also identifiesFor example, is a momentum-longitudinal state with zero inner product against every transverse physical polarization. This explains the string-state gauge redundancy, rather than merely counting covariant components. For an ordinary nonzero null momentum, choose a frame adapted to . The constraints remove one null direction in each index, and these null-state identifications remove the remaining longitudinal directions. The representatives are then , .
Decompose that transverse matrix into its symmetric trace-free part, antisymmetric part and trace. They describe the graviton, Kalb–Ramond field and dilaton, respectively. Their particle polarization counts areThese are representations of the rotational part of the massless little group. The dilaton corresponds to the transverse trace; a covariant scalar polarization can be written proportional to , with and . It is transverse in both indices and has trace 24. The nonzero-momentum assumption is appropriate for propagating particle states; zero momentum requires separate treatment of gauge and background zero modes.
In a general background, these fields replace the flat-space free action by the string nonlinear sigma model. A convenient Euclidean convention isHere is the orientation density; reversing its convention changes the displayed sign of the two-form coupling. The metric tensor is , is the antisymmetric Kalb–Ramond field, and is the dilaton. Their worldsheet couplings reproduce the corresponding massless closed-string vertex operators when expanded about flat space. The Polyakov path integral integrates over embedding fields and metrics modulo worldsheet diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations; gauge fixing supplies ghost determinants and moduli integrations. Quantum consistency of a general background additionally requires vanishing sigma-model beta functions, not just insertion of arbitrary backgrounds into a free theory.
Finally, separate the constant dilaton mode, . By the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, its action isFor a connected oriented surface of genus , its Euler characteristic is . Defining the string coupling by givesThus the string genus expansion is a topology sum with two extra powers of per handle. An amplitude with canonically normalized external closed-string vertices has the additional vertex normalization , so its overall factor is . The curvature term, rather than a guessed coupling inserted at each internal interaction, supplies this dependence directly from the functional integral.

In conformal gauge, a free closed bosonic string has , periodicity in , and the two Virasoro constraints . Its left- and right-moving string oscillator families have independent Virasoro generators and . In old covariant string quantization, a physical string state obeyswith in the critical bosonic string theory. The two zero-mode conditions also impose closed-string level matching. For an open string, keep just one string oscillator family. Negative-mode constraints are adjoints on bras, not additional annihilation conditions on physical string states.
A spurious string state is a Virasoro descendant orthogonal to every physical string state: if , then follows from and . A null string state is a spurious state that is itself physical. It consequently has zero norm and is removed in the null-state quotient of a string. The calculations below concern one string oscillator family and use
For with and all positive modes zero, . AlsoIt is therefore physical for string intercept one and spurious by construction. In particular . This proves the requested level-one descendant is null.
For the scalar descendant, write with and positive modes zero. Direct commutation givesFor instance and . Modes annihilate because every remaining positive mode annihilates its parent. Hence the physical scalar descendant requires and :It is spurious, so physicality also proves orthogonality and zero norm without an extra positivity assumption.
The printed coefficient does not give this null string state. It instead gives , generally nonzero. For a normalized highest-weight parent with weight at , the descendant Gram matrix isThus the printed vector has norm , whereas the corrected vector has norm zero. This is a genuine PDF coefficient error. Away from 26 dimensions even the corrected coefficient does not give the claimed physical null string state; the remaining condition is .
The level-two open string state also needs a source correction: its vector string oscillator must be , not the printed . A single has level one and cannot share the stated mass-shell condition with the two- term. Put , and write the genuine level-two state asThe mass-shell condition gives , so . The commutators above giveFor the second formula, the contraction from the two operators is exactly , not twice that value. Modes vanish automatically. We have derivedThe coefficient formulas in the question are consequently consistent after the string oscillator correction and with .
To prove the full level-two open-string polarization decomposition, not merely check one candidate, defineThe constraints give and therefore . Contracting with givesIts trace is . Thus is symmetric, traceless and transverse. Conversely, arbitrary , a vector with , and such a tensor giveand direct contraction verifies both constraints. The number uses ; it would not reproduce the same unrestricted trace in arbitrary dimension.
Finally the two unphysical pieces are precisely the descendants already proved null. The vector part iswhose parent has and all positive modes zero because . For the scalar part useThenhas exactly the scalar tensor and vector . The momentum vacuum has and positive modes zero, as required. HenceThe physical quotient contains only the transverse traceless tensor. Its massive little-group space has dimension , agreeing with the light-cone gauge in string theory count at level two.

In a two-dimensional conformal field theory, a quasi-primary operator of conformal weights obeysfor global conformal, or Möbius, transformations. A primary operator obeys this law for every locally invertible holomorphic and antiholomorphic conformal coordinate change. Quasi-primary is therefore weaker: the stress tensor at nonzero central charge is quasi-primary, but its Schwarzian transformation term prevents it from being primary under a general map.
A primary state is a simultaneous eigenstate of with eigenvalues , satisfyingA quasi-primary state need only satisfy the corresponding conditions. Negative modes of the Virasoro algebra generate descendants.
In radial quantization, a local operator at the origin prepares a state on a surrounding circle; logarithmic radius is Euclidean time. The state–operator correspondence is . Acting with a Virasoro generator means inserting its stress-tensor contour around that operator. For a primary operator, the operator product expansion isMultiplication by and the contour residue give , , and for . Conversely the contour modes are the coefficients of the singular expansion; vanishing positive modes removes every pole of order three and higher. The remaining double and simple poles generate precisely the primary transformation law. The antiholomorphic argument is identical. This proves the state-operator correspondence for Virasoro primaries in both directions.
An integrated string vertex operator is integrated with . The measure transforms with weights , so conformal invariance requires its matter operator to have weights . In old covariant string quantization the same requirement is and . The ghost-dressed unintegrated vertex has total weights . Physical states are identified modulo null string states, or more systematically by BRST cohomology; raw counting of all primary operators includes gauge redundancy.
For a free embedding boson the holomorphic stress tensor is . Contracting it with gives weight ; every holomorphic oscillator of level adds to that weight. ThusWith Lorentzian target signature, , so the closed-bosonic-string mass shell from primary weights isThe ground state is tachyonic, level one is massless, and higher levels are massive. The primary conditions also constrain the polarization tensors; the two zero-mode conditions fix the mass and level matching.
For the commuting beta-gamma system, write . The displayed exchange leaves the arguments attached to their respective fields. Exchanging the arguments instead givesThis radial-ordering sign in commuting beta-gamma contractions must be kept when differentiating. Expanding the total derivative in the proposed stress tensor givesThe contraction and its derivative giveSimilarly and giveThere are no higher poles. Both fields are holomorphic and , so
To compute the central charge, put and . Only double Wick contractions can give the fourth-order pole in . Their coefficients arewhere only the double-contraction terms are shown. For example, the mixed contraction uses and . All Wick pairings have bosonic signs. Therefore the fourth-order coefficient isThe stress-tensor operator product expansion has fourth-order coefficient , yieldingThis is the stress tensor of a commuting beta-gamma system calculation. Single contractions supply the usual terms, with the potential third-order terms canceling.

Spinning-particle mechanics. Keep the mostly-plus metric and place the odd multiplier to the left. Varying the original PDF's dotted-fermion kinetic term givesThe last two equations are multiplier constraints. In deriving the fermion equation, the variation of is after integration by parts; moving past supplies the sign in the interaction variation. The TeX conversion omits the dot, which would erase the fermionic symplectic structure; the PDF fixes it.
Under an infinitesimal Lorentz rotation the target vectors transform together. The scalar contractions in the action are invariant. Its antisymmetric Noether charge isThe spin bilinear is antisymmetric because the Grassmann variables anticommute. Direct differentiation makes conservation particularly transparent:while the fermion equation givesThey cancel, so . The same charge generates Lorentz transformations through the canonical and fermionic Dirac brackets, up to the convention for the sign of the antisymmetric transformation parameter.
The pseudoclassical spinning particle uses odd classical variables rather than assigning an ordinary commuting spatial vector to spin. Eliminating the fermionic momentum constraints givesThese are symmetric graded Poisson brackets. The even bilinears have the Lorentz transformation law of an internal angular-momentum tensor. This is spin from Grassmann bilinears.
Quantization replaces the bracket by an anticommutator,The Clifford algebra is represented on spinors. The constraint then becomesthe massless Dirac equation. Its square gives the massless wave equation, matching . The quantized spin generator is . This spinning-particle Dirac quantization explains why the wavefunction carries a spinor index even though the original variables are vector coordinates.
The NS phase-space action. A Fourier action compatible with the displayed constraints isThe are odd multipliers; an overall phase can instead be absorbed in their definition. The here are fermionic matter modes, not the antighost of Question3. This Neveu–Schwarz Fourier phase-space action gives the bosonic oscillator symplectic form and .
For an open string, the two worldsheet fermion chiralities are related at each endpoint. Opposite relative signs at the two ends produce, after doubling the interval, . The Neveu–Schwarz sector therefore has half-integer Fourier frequencies , with no matter-fermion zero mode. Equal endpoint signs give the periodic Ramond sector instead. The bosonic zero-mode normalization is again .
In old covariant string quantization, all target components are retained and obeyOther oscillator brackets vanish. The momentum-labelled oscillator vacuum satisfies , , and ; take its matter norm positive. The zero-point convention stated in the question givesA physical oscillator ground state has , soIt is a scalar, not a spinor, since the NS sector has no Clifford zero modes. It is a tachyon if , massless if , and massive if . In the usual limiting theory it is the unprojected NS tachyon, removed by the standard GSO projection. Calling it tachyonic before specifying the sign of would be too strong.
The half-level vector and its norm. Let . The level is . Its condition and the only potentially nonzero positive supercurrent condition giveIndeed implies . Higher positive annihilate the state. Likewise is either zero or an annihilator, so all conditions hold. This is the half-level Neveu–Schwarz vector state.
Its matter norm is proportional to . For a real, nonzero on-shell momentum in ordinary Minkowski space, three cases exhaust the possibilities:
- If , then is timelike and its orthogonal complement is Euclidean. In its rest frame sets , so every nonzero physical polarization has positive norm.
- If , then is null. Choose , . Transversality sets , leaving . Polarizations proportional to are null.
- If , then is spacelike. A frame with allows , which satisfies but has norm . It is an explicit negative-norm physical polarization at this level.
Thus, with the usual nonzero particle-momentum hypothesis,This is a level-specific result, not a proof of the full NS no-ghost theorem in arbitrary dimension.
At the limiting intercept the vector becomes massless, and the longitudinal polarization is a null state. It is generated by . Factoring out that null direction identifies and leaves positive physical polarizations of a gauge vector. In the consistent critical NS string one additionally has ; the half-level positivity argument alone does not derive that dimension.
There is a genuine zero-momentum exception if the printed word “all” is read literally. At and , the polarization obeys every displayed positive-mode constraint and the mass shell, but has norm . Transversality is vacuous, and removes nothing. This nonzero-momentum condition in the massless vector norm test is therefore necessary for the intended endpoint assertion. Including zero momentum changes the unrestricted elementary test to strict ; ordinary propagating massless particle states use nonzero null momentum.
Finally, an oscillator vacuum used to build the excited state is labelled by that state's momentum. It need not separately satisfy the scalar-ground-state mass shell: imposing both and at the same momentum would incorrectly exclude all such excitations.
