Classical mixture of coherent states Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
A normalized nonnegative probability measure over coherent states produces a classical mixture. The measure may contain Dirac delta distributions, so a pure coherent state is included. Conditioning on gives Poisson distribution photon statistics; hence . Each optical quadrature has variance at least its vacuum value because mixing adds nonnegative variance of conditional means. These inequalities provide simple nonclassicality witnesses.
Coherent-state photon statistics Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
For a coherent state, write and in number states. The annihilation operator gives , so . Normalization yields . Thus photon statistics follows a Poisson distribution with , and the normal ordering of every moment gives . This factorization is the defining virtue of coherent states for optical calculations.[ref]

As an original comparison, choose . Then , , , and . A two-photon Fock state also has mean two but has and pair moment two. ConsequentlyIn particular, cannot supply a pair. Nevertheless, photon statistics alone does not determine a quantum state: averaging over a uniform quantum phase removes its off-diagonal entries while retaining exactly the same and these equal-time moments.
Intensity interferometry 2026-11-05
Intensity interferometry infers source coherence from correlations between measured intensities, rather than directly combining electric-field amplitudes. For stationary chaotic Gaussian light, the normalized correlations satisfy , under the relevant statistical assumptions.
Separated detectors can therefore measure the magnitude of spatial coherence, which is related to the source's angular structure. Optical carrier phase need not be stabilized as in amplitude interferometry, but fast timing and sufficient photon statistics are crucial. The squared magnitude does not by itself retain every phase needed for unrestricted image reconstruction.
A single-mode coherent state is an annihilation operator eigenstate:Its photon statistics are Poisson distribution: . For optical quadratures , , one has and . Its field mean oscillates classically while retaining vacuum fluctuations.[ref]

[ref]A classical mixture of coherent states has a nonnegative Glauber-Sudarshan representation. A nonclassical state of light cannot be represented that way. Examples are a squeezed vacuum state, with quadrature variances and , and a nonvacuum number state, with zero photon number variance. Noise below the vacuum level in one quadrature, sub-Poisson number noise, or photon antibunching can witness nonclassicality. For , ; coherent light has . Thermal light has excess noise but is a classical mixture: noncoherent does not by itself mean nonclassical.
For and , , so . Vacuum and coherent states have variance in either optical quadrature. quadrature squeezing means that some rotated optical quadrature has variance below this reference, with compensating noise elsewhere. A reduced second moment about zero is not the correct test when the field's mean is displaced.
For and , the quiet principal axis of the optical squeezed vacuum is at angle under the squeeze-operator convention used above, andThe pure Gaussian quantum state saturates the uncertainty product. Displacement moves its centre without changing its covariance ellipse; squeezed thermal states instead have a larger uncertainty product. The optical squeezed vacuum has zero mean field, even photon-number parity and mean occupation ; it need not have sub-Poissonian photon statistics. number squeezing and quadrature squeezing are different conditions.
Degenerate parametric amplification generates single-mode squeezing; a two-mode squeezed vacuum instead has correlated occupations and joint quadrature squeezing. Either individual mode of an ideal two-mode state is thermal after the other is ignored, not individually squeezed. balanced homodyne detection measures the noise versus local oscillator phase. Reference phase drift admixes the anti-squeezed optical quadrature, while electronic noise and detector imbalance need separate checks.
For an optical loss channel with efficiency and vacuum entering the unused port, optical squeezing degradation by loss givesThe linear-loss limit follows directly by writing the output field as with independent vacuum mode . Loss therefore places a floor under measured squeezing. Squeezed input can improve phase-sensitive measurements when aligned with the measured optical quadrature; it does not reduce every noise source or both conjugate uncertainties at once.
Photon statistics 2026-10-18
Photon statistics is the probability distribution of the number operator in specified field modes, or the distribution of registered counts in a specified gate. Those distributions agree only for an appropriate ideal measurement. Mode selection, losses, and detector dead time matter. For a one-mode density matrix, andThese two sums already distinguish preparations with the same expected value.
Quantum optics 2026-10-18
Quantum optics studies light using quantum states of the electromagnetic field and their interaction with matter. Photon statistics asks how detections fluctuate; the quantum theory of optical coherence relates those detections to field correlations. A coherent state, thermal light, and a Fock state can have the same mean photon number yet different pair counts. This distinction makes photon counting useful for testing sources intended to emit one photon at a time.
Roy J. Glauber Created 2026-10-24 Updated 2026-11-05
Roy J. Glauber developed a quantum description of photon statistics and optical coherence. His 1963 paper uses coherent states to represent quantum states of the radiation field and relate them to field-correlation measurements. The coherent states form a complete set despite being nonorthogonal. This provides a useful bridge to classical field descriptions while preserving distinctions between quantum and classical photon statistics, rather than characterizing light only by its mean intensity.[ref]
