Top decay occurs before a colour-bound hadron can form. Using representative scales – and ,
Thus top quarks do not live long enough to form ordinary top-containing mesons. The decay products still participate in QCD radiation and hadronization, so “free decay” here means decay before binding, not a stable observable free coloured asymptotic particle.
Assume only Standard Model decay channels, negligible final-state masses, three lepton families, three quark colours and a unitary CKM matrix. The top-quark channels are kinematically closed. Summing the allowed quark channels gives times one leptonic width, while the leptons contribute three. Neglecting QCD and electroweak radiative corrections,
The source's rounded CKM entries give almost the same factor; their tiny nonunitarity is not physically significant. Consequently
The propagated uncertainty uses , taking as fixed. It is the measurement uncertainty within the stated tree-level approximation; omitted radiative corrections are an additional modelling limitation. In particular QCD increases the hadronic width and lowers the inferred coupling when included.
The printed electromagnetic comparison is , not the probability amplitude coupling . Compare like quantities:
Equivalently exceeds . The weak interaction is weak at low energy primarily because of the massive propagator, rather than an exceptionally small fundamental coupling.
For a selected lepton sample, subtract backgrounds and correct for detector acceptance, reconstruction and particle-identification efficiency, trigger efficiency and live time. Schematically,
The first expression applies when the published signal definition is a specified fiducial region; the second additionally extrapolates by acceptance . Resolution-induced migration across selections must be unfolded or included in a detector-response fit. Tau lepton reconstruction also needs the relevant branching fractions if only selected decay modes are counted. Initial- and final-state QED radiation and beam-energy spread change the measured line shape; extracting a Born-level or pole cross section requires the corresponding radiative corrections. In the electron channel, Bhabha scattering also has a non-annihilation -channel contribution that must be treated.
For quarks, hadronization means the detector observes hadrons and jets, rather than free quarks. Correct the selection and any flavor tagging using fragmentation and decay modeling, including losses to heavy-hadron decays with neutrinos. In comparison with a pointlike lepton cross section, also include the three color charges per quark flavor and QCD corrections, schematically with at high energy. The color multiplicity is a physical production factor, not an extra factor by which to divide an already efficiency-corrected inclusive hadronic event count.
The Delta baryon has electric charge and valence quark content . In its ground state the spatial wavefunction has orbital angular momentum and is symmetric. Its spin is ; the maximal projection state is symmetric in spin, and its quark flavour wavefunction is symmetric as well. Three identical fermions require an antisymmetric total wavefunction by the Pauli exclusion principle. A further internal degree of freedom must therefore supply the antisymmetry.
With three color charges, that factor is the normalized colour singlet
It changes sign under exchange of any two quarks. The remaining symmetric factors then give the required antisymmetric total state. This argument motivates color charge independently of the already present quark flavour and spin labels.
Away from narrow resonances and quark thresholds, the QED annihilation cross section into each accessible quark flavour is its squared fractional electric charge times the muon-pair cross section, multiplied by the number of distinguishable color charges. Thus the inclusive hadronic ratio is
With , the continuum predictions are , and as successive charm quark and bottom quark channels become accessible. The measured normalization and steps support three color charges. At leading order these hadronic events form two back-to-back jets from the quark and antiquark; quantitative comparisons include QCD corrections and avoid the nonperturbative threshold region.
The extra resolved jet is explained by , with gluon radiation from either the quark or antiquark. One possible color charge routing is initial followed by ; the final , and combine to a net colour singlet.
Figure 1.
Colour flow in a three-jet process and in gluon-fusion Higgs production
. Details.
The three-jet cross section contains one additional strong interaction vertex in the amplitude, so its ratio to the two-jet rate is of order times a resolution-dependent kinematic coefficient. A resolved fraction of order is consistent with perturbative QCD and a strong coupling constant much larger than the fine-structure constant. It is not an equality : the jet definition and cuts are needed. Photon radiation has a much smaller electromagnetic rate. The large hadronic third-jet rate supports gluon radiation; identifying the radiated object specifically as a colour-octet gluon also uses the QCD vertex and colour-flow description, not merely the existence of three visible jets.
Represent the color charges by , and . The Gell-Mann matrices satisfy
The physical quark-gluon Feynman vertex contains with ; the off-diagonal combination therefore allows . Color charge conservation assigns the emitted gluon the colour-flow label .
The claimed impossibility of is false. A direct counterexample from the printed matrices is
Thus both diagonal gluons have nonzero vertex elements, and . They correspond to the traceless combinations
A Gell-Mann matrix is a generator rather than a finite rotation, but exponentiating a diagonal generator also leaves the red basis direction fixed up to a phase. The actual excluded object is the identity generator, proportional to the colour singlet . Adding it would extend SU(3) to unitary group and introduce a ninth singlet vector boson. A colour-preserving vertex among the existing eight gluons does not require that extra boson and does not make the ordinary diagonal gluons colour singlets.
In gluon-fusion Higgs production, two gluons couple to a closed top quark loop, and the Higgs boson couples to that massive quark through its Yukawa interaction. The right panel of the diagram in c shows one explicit colour-flow component: internal at one gluon insertion, then at the other; the colour-neutral Higgs boson insertion preserves the internal color charge. Include both loop orderings. The color charge factor is
so the two incoming gluons are projected onto a colour singlet. The Yukawa coupling is , and the vertex has strength . No direct tree-level mass coupling is needed. Integrating out a sufficiently heavy top quark generates an effective interaction proportional to , which is allowed by gauge invariance even though the gluon is massless.
There is also no kinematic obstacle: two massless particles with nonparallel momenta can have nonzero total invariant mass. In particular, head-on gluons have , providing the energy needed for the Higgs boson at the LHC.
For the first generation the flavor-diagonal weak neutral current permits
Each quark channel has three possible matching color charges. The weak charged current permits
The two charges have equal partial decay widths to charge-conjugate channels to the accuracy needed here. Lepton universality and color multiplicity in a decay width give one unit of width for a massless lepton pair and three for a quark pair, apart from quark mixing and radiative corrections.
If only the first generation is included, the branching fractions are to the lepton channel and to quarks. For the actual accessible Standard Model channels, there are three lepton units and two accessible up-type quark rows, and , each with three colors. The top quark is too heavy. Unitarity of the CKM matrix sums over accessible down-type partners, giving nine units in total:
These fractions concern a charged lepton together with its appropriate neutrino; “lepton pair” does not mean two charged leptons in a decay. The Z boson has different vector and axial couplings for different fermions, so the same simple equal-unit rule cannot be transferred to all its partial decay widths.
Using the measured single-flavor leptonic partial decay width as one unit,
This agrees with three leptonic channels plus six color-distinguishable quark channels in the leading massless approximation. The six quark units are two accessible up-type flavors times three color charges, with the sums of squared CKM matrix elements over down-type partners approximately unity. They are not nine generations or nine new flavors. Small mass and Quantum chromodynamics radiative corrections prevent the ratio from being an exactly integer channel count.
The charge relation combines left and right weak isospin with the generator distinguishing quarks from leptons inside the extended color charge group.
Pati-Salam model Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-10-25
A quark-lepton unification framework with conventional minimal gauge group . leptons supply a fourth color charge, and a right-handed neutrino completes each family. fermion masses additionally depend on symmetry breaking and Yukawa couplings.
In distinct-flavour quark annihilation, the one-photon exchange color charge tensor is , whereas the one-gluon tensor is . Their inner product after the external color charge sum is , since the fundamental gauge generators of are traceless. Thus the averaged squared scattering amplitude has no leading electromagnetic–strong interference term for this process. Fixed external color charge components, or processes with different exchange pairings, need not share this cancellation.
Quark-gluon vertex 2026-10-25
Expanding gives a vertex joining a quark, its conjugate line and a gluon. In the convention , its rule is the displayed matrix. The gluon changes the color charge state through the generator but preserves the quark flavour. With distinct flavours in , this permits the tree-level annihilation graph but not a flavour-changing exchange along one quark line.
A particularly economical example is the baryon decuplet. Restrict to fully symmetric three-quark flavor states. The nonnegative occupation numbers satisfy , giving possibilities by stars and bars. Their additive labels are
These formulas follow directly from the constituent table. With fixed , there are possible values of , so the weight diagram has rows of four, three, two and one states. Its outer triangle is therefore a consequence of the constituent construction, rather than an arbitrary drawing convention.

. Original exact constituent calculation using . The left panel shows the fundamental flavor triplet. The right panel adds three such weights in fully symmetric flavor states; every point is labelled by its constituent content and electric charge. No measured masses or event counts are plotted. Details.
The bottom corner has , hence , and : the Omega baryon position. The top-right corner has and , corresponding to the doubly charged Delta baryon. Every point satisfies the Gell-Mann--Nishijima formula .
The flavor construction is only part of the state. The Pauli constraint on three-quark flavour multiplets also involves spin angular momentum, the spatial wavefunction and color charge. In particular, three identical fermions cannot be assigned a completely symmetric total state merely because the flavor diagram is symmetric. Nor does the same flavor diagram determine the hadron masses: an approximate flavor symmetry can organize a spectrum without making all its members degenerate.
For traceless Hermitian matrices representing the Lie algebra of the special unitary group , normalized by , completeness of in the space of Hermitian matrices gives the displayed identity. In particular . For traceless , this becomes . These identities reduce QCD color charge sums without choosing explicit matrices.
Unpolarized resonance spin factor Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-10-20
For unpolarized incident particles, the resonant cross section sums over the resonance's magnetic substates and averages over the incident spin states. This gives the displayed statistical weight under the conventional Breit-Wigner resonance cross section normalization. A spin-zero resonance formed from two spin-half particles has , whereas a spin-one resonance has . This counting is distinct from final-state color charge multiplicities.
