Chirality distinguishes the two inequivalent Weyl spinor representations of the proper Lorentz group. For a Dirac spinor, define and the chiral projectorsThey satisfy and . Proper Lorentz transformations preserve each chiral representation, whereas parity exchanges them. Helicity instead measures the projection of spin angular momentum along momentum. For a massive particle it can change under a boost that overtakes the particle, so it must not be identified with chirality. For massless positive-energy particles the left-chiral field annihilates negative-helicity particles and creates positive-helicity antiparticles.
The Standard Model is a chiral gauge theory: left- and right-chiral fields have different gauge group representations. In the convention , one generation containsThe minimal field content has no right-handed neutrino. A sterile right-handed field is a possible extension, not a required member of that minimal list. The table displays weak isospin, hypercharge and color charge assignments, not assignments of massive-particle helicity.
The weak charged current contains and its Hermitian conjugate, with coupling . Only the left-chiral lepton doublet participates, giving parity violation. Both chiralities can couple to the Z boson, but their coefficients differ:Here is that of the left-chiral component. For the electron, it is . The photon and gluon couplings of a charged massive fermion are vectorlike; this does not make the full electroweak interaction vectorlike.
A bare Dirac mass term joins the two chiral representations. Their different electroweak quantum numbers forbid that term before electroweak symmetry breaking. A Yukawa interaction, such as , is gauge invariant; the Higgs doublet expectation value then gives . Up-type quarks use the conjugate doublet. Thus chirality explains the weak charge assignments, their parity violation, and why masses arise through the Higgs mechanism. The consistency of these chiral assignments also requires Standard Model anomaly cancellation.

Gauge boson self-interactions follow from noncommuting generators, rather than a separate assumption that the force carriers should attract one another. With and , the Yang-Mills field strength isThe last term is required so that transforms covariantly under the gauge group. Let . Expanding gives a quadratic kinetic term and the cubic and quartic Yang-Mills self-interactionsThe structure constants and one gauge coupling fix both types of vertex. For an Abelian group the structure constants vanish: the renormalizable pure electromagnetic field action has no elementary three- or four-photon vertex. Photon scattering through charged-particle loops is a different statement, not a contradiction.
In Quantum chromodynamics, the non-Abelian structure produces three- and four-gluon vertices; the gluons themselves carry color charge. These vertices influence multi-jet production and the renormalization group running of the strong coupling. In the electroweak sector the fields mix with the Abelian field after electroweak symmetry breaking. The resulting charged-vector vertices include and , with couplings and , together with the related four-boson vertices. Neutral-only triple vertices such as are absent at tree level in the Standard Model.
The electroweak triple gauge coupling can be measured using . The neutrino exchange and neutral-vector exchange diagrams interfere: the gauge-related coefficients cancel the most rapidly growing longitudinal-polarization terms. Their relative strengths and angular dependence therefore test the theory more sharply than merely observing a pair of massive vector bosons. The electron-mass-suppressed Higgs contribution completes the corresponding mass-dependent cancellation. Adding arbitrary independent three- and four-vector couplings would generally destroy these relations.
At the Large Electron–Positron Collider, the L3 experiment fitted charged triple-gauge parameters using hadronic and semileptonic W-pair events, complemented by single-W and single-photon channels. These measurements agreed with the predicted self-couplings. Their interpretation uses reconstructed decay products and differential distributions, rather than direct pictures of a three-boson vertex.[ref]

For the usual colour SU(3) fixing the fourth coordinate of the SU(4) defining representation,Taking the exterior square givesThe identification follows by contracting an antisymmetric tensor with the invariant three-index Levi-Civita symbol. Combining this with c gives all colour multiplets:A colour triplet has the color charge transformation law of a quark, an antitriplet that of an antiquark, and a colour singlet is colour-neutral, as a lepton is. Thus both parent representations permit quark-like and antiquark-like colour sectors; the vector has one neutral sector and the spinor two. These are colour assignments only. They do not determine particle spin, statistics, electric charge, weak quantum numbers or a full generation of the Standard Model. In a real parent field the conjugate colour sectors may describe one complex colour field and its conjugate, rather than independent particle species.
Global group qualification. The printed chain is correct at the Lie algebra level, . Globally its simply connected form is . The standard map of SU(4) into through has a nontrivial kernel: the concrete central element acts as on and trivially on the singlet representation. Its image is , rather than an injective copy of SU(4) under this map.
The global form obstruction for the Spin7 spinor is explicit: the central element of the Spin group maps to the identity in but acts as on the eight-dimensional spin representation. Equivalently acts as on both and in its restriction. Therefore the spinor does not descend to a genuine SO(7) group representation. A theory containing that spinor needs the Spin group global form, or must understand the source's notation as specifying only its Lie algebra. The displayed colour branchings remain valid with this correction.

Let , so . Direct multiplication of the Pauli matrices gives , equivalently . For this impliesTherefore transforms as the same weak fundamental representation doublet as , while complex conjugation reverses its hypercharge to . This is the Higgs conjugate doublet. The Yukawa coupling product is an singlet, and its hypercharges add toIt is consequently gauge-invariant and can supply an up-quark mass.
In unitary gauge, . Writing for the full arbitrary coefficient of the Yukawa coupling term, its physical form isA one-generation field rephasing makes the mass positive, and its Higgs boson coupling is . The printed Yukawa expression has an additional trailing after which is never defined. If it denotes a constant, absorb it into ; in the conventional dimensionless Yukawa notation without that factor, . It does not affect the gauge-transformation argument.
For three families, use a singular value decomposition of the two mass matrices: and , with positive diagonal entries. The original left-handed weak current then becomes a current between mass eigenstates withA complex matrix has eighteen real parameters, and imposes nine independent real conditions, leaving nine. A generic unitary matrix can be built from three complex plane rotations and three diagonal phases: each plane rotation supplies one angle and one phase. Thus these are three rotation angles and six phases. Rephase each of the six Dirac quark mass eigenfields, applying the same phase to its two chiralities so the diagonal masses stay real. A common phase changes no entry of , leaving five effective rephasings. Removing five of the six phases leaves three angles and one physical phase. This CKM parameter counting assumes generic nondegenerate masses; degeneracies give additional basis freedom.
Exactly massless neutrinos have an arbitrary unitary flavor rotation that changes no mass term. After diagonalizing the charged-lepton mass matrix, choose the neutrino basis with the same left-handed rotation. The apparent lepton charged-current mixing matrix becomes the identity. Thus mixing of exactly massless neutrinos is removable; it is not an analogue of physical CKM mixing.
For the requested CP symmetry calculation, write . The supplied charge conjugation transformations, with the fermion-reordering sign, giveFor , use and the given gamma matrix relation to obtainUnder parity, the current acquires the Lorentz parity matrix and becomes . Under charge conjugation the charged vector also changes sign and becomes its conjugate. The two minus signs cancel, and the parity matrices cancel in the contracted operator. ConsequentlyWith , the interaction is . Thereforewith the transformed density evaluated at . This is the CP transformation of a charged quark current.
Physical noninvariance requires a phase that cannot be removed by quark rephasings. The invariant quartetis the Jarlskog invariant, where and in the standard three-angle parametrization. If , no allowed row/column phases can make the matrix real, and the charged-current interaction violates CP symmetry. For example all three angles with give .
The printed noninvariance claim is conditional on a nonzero physical phase. Arbitrary Yukawa matrices do not force it: , or any real CKM matrix, gives a CP-invariant charged-current interaction. The correct statement is generic CP violation when the irreducible phase is nontrivial, as explained by quark rephasing and CP conservation.
Finally a right-handed neutrino has gauge representation . Its Lorentz-invariant same-chirality bilinear with the field obtained by charge conjugation is therefore a gauge singlet and permits a Majorana mass term, conventionallyThe factor is the usual convention for a field paired with itself; it may be absorbed into the printed coefficient. A Higgs Yukawa interaction can independently give a Dirac mass term. The Majorana term violates lepton number by two units but preserves the gauge symmetries. Corresponding terms for the other charged Standard Model fermions carry nonzero electric charge, and quarks also carry nontrivial color charge. Thus this gauge-invariant right-handed neutrino Majorana mass is allowed while those charged-fermion analogues are forbidden. Merely introducing a right-handed neutrino permits mass; vanishing mass coefficients would still leave it massless.

The derivative convention uses hypercharge Y with . For each lepton family , the left-handed fields form an SU(2) doublet , with . Their weak isospin values are and their electric charges are . The right-handed charged lepton is an SU(2) singlet, with , and charge . The minimal model used here has no right-handed neutrino. A sterile right-handed neutrino, if added as a singlet with , would have no charged weak current interaction. Antiparticles carry the conjugate representations and opposite electric charges.
Expanding supplies . The off-diagonal entries of are and . With the chiral projector , one has . Thus the two W boson interactions areFor quarks, separate rotations diagonalize the up-type and down-type mass terms. If their left-handed rotations are and , the charged interaction contains the CKM matrix :There is an implicit sum over color charge. This quark mixing permits transitions between different families, rather than just the paired fields in a single doublet.
Let and . At momenta much smaller than , neglect derivatives in the heavy W boson equation. Its mass and source terms can be completed to a square:This explicitly performs integrating out a charged vector boson. The resulting Fermi interaction isThe omitted terms contain derivatives and are relatively suppressed by momentum squared divided by .
For the leptonic pion decay, Lorentz covariance restricts a vacuum-to-spin-zero current matrix element to a constant times . In the rest frame, rotations eliminate the spatial components. Under parity, the temporal vector current is even, whereas the vacuum is even and the pion is odd, so its temporal matrix element equals its negative and vanishes. The temporal axial current is odd and is allowed. This proves the vacuum-to-pseudoscalar current selection rule, rather than merely assuming an axial current. Define the pion decay constant byThen the vector-minus-axial charged weak current has matrix element , up to an irrelevant overall phase convention. Consequently the scattering amplitude for the decay can be writtenUse , the momentum-space Dirac equation , and for a massless neutrino. Since , the neutrino contribution vanishes, leavingThe fermion spin sum is, using the supplied gamma matrix trace identities,Here , , and . The mass term in the trace vanishes; anticommuting reduces the remaining trace to twice . It follows thatUsing two-body decay phase space, with final momentum magnitude , gives the leptonic pseudoscalar decay widthThus the requested factor is already present in the squared amplitude, and the phase space supplies one more threshold factor.
The physical explanation is helicity suppression. In the pion rest frame the two momenta are opposite. The massless antineutrino has positive helicity; zero total angular momentum would require the electron to have positive helicity too. The charged weak current instead creates a left-chiral electron, whose helicity is negative when its mass vanishes. A nonzero electron mass admits the required opposite helicity with an amplitude proportional to . The decay amplitude vanishes for , and the rate is suppressed by .

Put and neglect electron and final-quark masses compared with . First fix a final color charge; its multiplicity will be restored for the inclusive rate. The photon-exchange scattering amplitude is, up to an overall phase,Averaging over the two spins of each incident particle and summing final spins givesBy the gamma matrix trace identities, the first trace is , and likewise for the second. Contracting the two tensors cancels the terms proportional to , givingIn the centre-of-mass frame all four energies are . The first pair of scalar products equals each, and the second pair equals each. Hence .
For clarity, the printed flux hint has a factor-of-four inconsistency: when , the prefactor multiplying the spin-averaged amplitude is , not . Alternatively, is correct if . Use this massless two-body scattering flux normalization, keeping the spin average separate.
To obtain the two-body Lorentz-invariant phase space directly, integrate the momentum-conserving spatial delta function, leaving . The remaining radial integral is , so . The relativistic scattering cross-section is consequentlySince , the integrated electron-positron annihilation into a quark pair result, for this fixed color, isThe first two printed formulas are thus color-stripped. Distinct final colors are orthogonal states and must be summed, producing . At leading order each accessible quark flavor contributes independently. Away from thresholds and narrow resonances, quark-hadron duality relates the inclusive parton rate to the observed inclusive electron-positron annihilation into hadrons, givingThis formula concerns the photon channel, assumes is large compared with the relevant quark masses and the strong-interaction scale, and does not include Z boson exchange.
Beyond leading order, an exactly exclusive pair of colored quarks is not an observable asymptotic state because of confinement and hadronization. Moreover its virtual corrections have infrared divergences; real soft or collinear gluon emission cannot be excluded if a finite rate is wanted. The inclusive sum includes both the corrected two-parton channel and channels such as , with their degenerate soft and collinear limits. Real and virtual infrared divergences then cancel for an infrared-safe observable. A specified jet observable can also be meaningful if it defines an infrared-safe observable; a bare two-quark final state is not.
A convenient inclusive calculation uses the optical theorem. For the electromagnetic hadronic current , defineThe hadronic electromagnetic-current spectral density is obtained from its discontinuity. In this convention the hadronic R ratio is , where at this order. Cutting the forward amplitude sums all allowed hadronic intermediate states, so perturbative Quantum chromodynamics applied to this inclusive quantity implements the required sum of real and virtual contributions.

Keeping the residual derivative of the truncated expression givesThus the principle of minimal sensitivity, applied to this expression with nonzero coupling and , selects the one-loop stationary scale for the hadronic annihilation correctionThis is a prescription based on the residual order- scale dependence of an order- approximation. At strictly order , the derivative already vanishes for every renormalization scale; the prescription does not assert exact scale dependence of the observable. It is useful only while the selected running coupling remains perturbative. If or , the stated derivative imposes no unique scale.

Let , neglect , and average over the two spin states of each incoming particle. Only the single-photon channel is being considered. The spectral-density symbol is not defined in the question, so specify its normalization before calculating. A useful photon-field convention isHere is the product of final-particle measures , including the appropriate sums and symmetry factors. Lorentz invariance and current conservation give the transverse tensor form. In this convention is the hadronic photon spectral density, with mass dimension , rather than a density of a stationary time series.
The electron annihilation amplitude can be written , up to an overall phase. The leptonic tensor after the initial spin average isIt obeys and . In the center-of-momentum frame, the flux denominator in the hint is , since the relative speed is 2 and each beam energy is . Contracting the tensors gives the inclusive relativistic cross-sectionHere is the fine-structure constant. The in the initial spin average is essential because the hint's particles were spinless.
For the other common convention, define the hadronic electromagnetic current with the coupling omitted, , and write its inclusive tensor asEquivalently, for , one has . At leading order in the electromagnetic interaction, is proportional to . ThusIf the symbol is instead used for this dimensionless hadronic electromagnetic-current spectral density, the last formula applies with renamed . The normalization must not be silently switched between these formulas.
At well above the strong-coupling scale of Quantum chromodynamics, asymptotic freedom makes production over distances of order perturbative. The electromagnetic current initially creates a quark-antiquark pair. Subsequent strong interactions produce hadrons, but an inclusive sum over all hadronic final states is much less sensitive to this rearrangement than an exclusive channel. This is the regime in which quark-hadron duality motivates a leading parton model calculation, with radiative and power-suppressed corrections. It is not a pointwise theorem at individual resonances or near thresholds; the comparison is most reliable for sufficiently inclusive or suitably averaged high-energy observables. This argument remains restricted to photon exchange, even where additional electroweak channels could also contribute.

QCD supplies the underlying strong interaction; Skyrmions provide a mesonic effective description of baryons, and quantized multi-Skyrmions can model nuclei. These are related descriptions at different scales, not three identical theories.
In QCD, quarks carry color charge and interact through gluons, the gauge fields of the color special unitary group . Its Lagrangian density has the formAsymptotic freedom makes short-distance processes accessible through small-coupling expansions, but nuclear scales involve strongly coupled, confined dynamics. Observable hadrons are color singlets. A nucleon, either a proton or a neutron, is a baryon with baryon number one; a nucleus contains such units of baryon number. Directly extracting all nuclear binding energies, spectra and interactions from QCD is difficult, motivating low-energy effective field theories that preserve its symmetries and relevant degrees of freedom.
For the two light quark flavours, the small-mass limit has approximate chiral symmetry . Chiral symmetry breaking leaves its vector subgroup , the approximate isospin symmetry. The three pions are the associated Goldstone bosons in the massless limit and pseudo-Goldstone bosons when the light quark masses are retained. Package these pions into a special unitary group fieldwhere is the pion decay constant in this normalization and are the Pauli matrices. The nonlinear sigma model is the leading two-derivative mesonic theory. The Skyrme model adds a specific four-derivative stabilizing interaction. One conventional normalization isHere is a dimensionless model coupling, not electric charge. The last term accounts for a common pion mass and preserves vector isospin. It vanishes in the chiral massless limit. This effective field theory uses color-singlet mesonic fields and does not resolve constituent quarks or gluons inside a baryon.
The condition at spatial infinity compactifies physical space to . Since is itself a three-sphere, the field defines a map with integer topological charge in . This is identified with the topological baryon number in the Skyrme model:The associated topological current is identically conserved. A single Skyrmion has , and a multi-Skyrmion with is a candidate intrinsic configuration for an ordinary nucleus; negative charge describes antibaryonic sectors. Integer topology prevents a smooth finite-energy unwinding into the classical vacuum, but it does not by itself guarantee a nonzero-size energy minimum.
The energetic reason for the Skyrme term is Derrick scaling. For the rescaled field in three dimensions, let be the quadratic-gradient, quartic-gradient, and potential energies. Their scale dependence isThe two-derivative nonlinear sigma model alone can lower its static energy by shrinking. The positive quartic Skyrme term instead grows under shrinking, permitting a balance and a stable soliton size. Without the mass term, this balance gives . The displayed scaling convention uses , so it is the inverse of the equally common convention.
The connection with QCD is strengthened by large-Nc baryon scaling. Generalize the number of colors to while keeping fixed. Meson masses remain of order one, their interactions weaken, and an effective mesonic action has an overall scale of order . In the Skyrme model this corresponds to and of order , so the soliton mass and rotational moment of inertia are also of order , whereas rotational level splittings are of order . These are the expected baryon scaling properties of large- QCD. A massive, semiclassical soliton built from meson fields is therefore consistent with the underlying theory, even though physical is only a finite value and the simplest Skyrme model is not uniquely determined by this argument.
To represent a nucleon, a classical Skyrmion must be quantized. The unit Skyrmion hedgehog ansatz ties spatial rotations to isospin rotations. Its collective coordinates include its position and orientation; rotational quantization of a unit Skyrmion gives the rotor spectrumin units with . The Finkelstein-Rubinstein constraints impose the correct fermionic sign under a nontrivial configuration-space loop. In particular a spatial rotation acts on a charge- state by in the physical odd-color theory: odd admits half-integer spin, while even has integer spin. For , the lowest allowed doublet represents the proton and neutron; the rotor state represents the Delta baryon resonance. A bosonic pion field can therefore describe fermionic baryons because the quantum wavefunction carries this nontrivial topological sign.
For nuclei, minimize the classical energy in a fixed baryon number sector, then quantize the permitted rotations, isospin rotations, and relevant vibrations or relative motions. The toroidal two-Skyrmion has a lowest nuclear state with , identifying it with the deuteron. The cubic four-Skyrmion has an allowed state appropriate to the alpha particle. The rational map approximation for Skyrmions makes these intrinsic symmetries easier to construct, while collective-rotation constraints for a Skyrmion select allowed nuclear quantum numbers. A spin-zero state has rotationally invariant laboratory expectation values; a classical cubic intrinsic field should not be interpreted as a fixed cube visible in every orientation. Collective-coordinate quantization restores this distinction between intrinsic shape and a physical quantum state.
The nuclear force also has a mesonic interpretation. At large separation the tails of Skyrmions are weak pion fields; with nonzero mass their multipole falloff derives from derivatives of the Yukawa potential. Their interaction depends on relative orientation, and after quantization generates the familiar spin- and isospin-dependent pion-exchange structure of the nuclear force. Attractive channels allow several unit Skyrmions to form a lower-energy multi-Skyrmion. In nuclear language the positive nuclear binding energy is the difference between the separated nucleon masses and the mass of the quantized bound state, not just a count of topological units.
The limitations remain physical. The simplest Skyrme model retains only selected terms in a derivative expansion, and finite solitons probe gradients where omitted terms can matter. Its parameters require matching or calibration; predicted binding can be too strong, and masses, radii and spectra are not all fixed correctly by topology. Rotational quantization alone neglects quantum and vibrational corrections, especially when clustering or breakup channels are important. More general mesonic interactions, additional meson fields, and less restrictive classical ansätze can improve the description, but they introduce further low-energy information. The organizing relation is thereforeIt links underlying quark and gluon dynamics to a geometric, symmetry-based account of baryons and nuclei, while keeping the distinction between an effective approximation and a full derivation from QCD.

All three interactions respect color charge; quark flavor is conserved by the strong interaction and the electromagnetic interaction, but can change in the weak interaction. These statements concern charges and net numbers, rather than an unchanging inventory of particles.
A quark transforms in the fundamental representation of the color charge gauge group . The strong interaction can change an individual quark's colour by exchanging a gluon, which itself carries color charge. For example, the colour flow is allowed: demanding that the outgoing quark remain red would be incorrect. At each interaction vertex the full colour flow is conserved. The colourless photon, W boson, and Z boson instead couple to a quark with an identity factor in colour space. A weak charged current can therefore change to , but cannot turn into without another coloured participant. External isolated hadrons are colour singlets; confinement prevents direct observation of a free coloured state.
For each quark flavor , define the net quark flavor number . The strong interaction and electromagnetic interaction preserve every : pair creation , for example, changes neither net strangeness nor any other . Their quark couplings are diagonal in quark flavor. The weak charged current contains , where is the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, and changes these net numbers. Weak neutral currents are diagonal in tree-level Feynman diagrams; flavor-changing neutral currents can occur through higher-order Feynman diagrams.
The observed hierarchy of mean lifetimes and decay channels supplies evidence: associated strange-particle production through the strong interaction preserves net strangeness, whereas a kaon's weak interaction decay to pions changes it. The electromagnetic interaction process has zero net quark flavor before and after annihilation. Neutrino oscillations show that individual lepton family numbers are not exact conserved quantities. Within the usual effectively massless-neutrino approximation, charged current decays such as preserve family numbers only when the emitted neutrinos are counted.
Evidence for three colours includes the hadronic R ratio , the colour multiplicities in W boson decay widths, and three-jet events revealing gluon radiation. These test Quantum chromodynamics and its colour structure together; they are not direct measurements of a named red or blue charge on a free quark.

In ordinary perturbative Standard Model reactions all three interactions conserve electric charge, four-momentum, total angular momentum, baryon number, and total lepton number. The last two are accidental conservation laws of these perturbative processes, not exact nonperturbative statements: electroweak sphalerons violate while preserving baryon-minus-lepton number. Total color charge is respected throughout.
The strong interaction and electromagnetic interaction also conserve each net quark flavor number, including strangeness, charm and bottom flavour. The weak charged current can change them through the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. Isospin is an approximate strong interaction symmetry in the small light-quark mass difference limit; the different electric charges of and break it in the electromagnetic interaction. Approximate flavor symmetry is distinct from exact net-flavour-number conservation by those interactions.
Parity conservation and charge conjugation symmetry hold for the electromagnetic interaction and, assuming a negligible strong CP parameter, the strong interaction. The weak interaction violates both, and also violates CP symmetry in suitable processes. CPT symmetry holds under the usual local Lorentz invariant quantum field theory assumptions. Individual lepton family numbers are conserved in the conventional massless-neutrino approximation but not in neutrino oscillations; an assertion of exact family conservation in all observed reactions would therefore be false.

For a three-body leptonic decay through the Fermi interaction, neglecting daughter masses and radiative corrections, lepton universality givesin natural units. Therefore scaling the muon decay rate by predicts only one leptonic channel, not the total tau lepton decay rate.
The tau lepton has two allowed charged-lepton channels, and , as well as hadronic channels from . Each allowed quark channel has three color charge choices and its Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix factor. Charm production is kinematically inaccessible in a physical hadronic final state at this mass. Treating the inclusive hadronic channels by a simple quark-hadron duality estimate,Thus, using and ,Finite daughter masses, hadronic decay thresholds and resonances, Quantum chromodynamics radiative corrections, and electroweak radiative corrections refine this estimate. The threefold color multiplicity in a decay width and extra decay channels are the main correction to naive fifth-power scaling.
A Feynman diagram specifies a term in the perturbative scattering amplitude, not a measured microscopic trajectory. Assign external spinors or polarization vectors, an interaction factor to each Feynman vertex and a propagator to each internal line; impose four-momentum conservation and integrate over independent loop momenta. Sum amplitudes for indistinguishable alternatives, then square, sum final spins and average unpolarized initial spins. A decay rate uses in natural units; a cross section also divides by incident flux. interference means probabilities of individual diagrams must not simply be added.
The electromagnetic fermion vertex is , with coupling proportional to ; it preserves fermion flavour. There is no elementary three-photon or four-photon vertex in quantum electrodynamics. The weak charged current has and vertices, with a left-chiral projector and a Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element at the quark vertex. The weak neutral current has vertices with vector and axial couplings; it includes neutrinos and is flavour diagonal at tree level. Electroweak gauge interactions also include , and quartic , , and vertices. Higgs-fermion and Higgs-vector interactions complete the mass-related scalar sector.[ref]
Quantum chromodynamics has vertices proportional to , plus three-gluon and four-gluon Feynman vertices because gluons carry color charge. A quark-gluon vertex preserves quark flavour. Internal particles need not be on their mass shells, but electric charge and four-momentum are conserved at each vertex. The figures below show representative leading flavour topologies; binding and hadronization are implicit, and additional strong-interaction contributions can modify hadronic amplitudes.
Theory. Quantum chromodynamics is a local, non-Abelian gauge theory with gauge group SU(3) acting on color charge. Its matter fields are spin-half quarks of six flavours, each in three colors; its eight massless spin-one gluons are the gauge fields. Unlike the neutral photon, gluons themselves carry gauge charge. Consequently there are three-gluon and four-gluon vertices as well as the quark-gluon vertex. A compact Lagrangian density iswhere is the gauge covariant derivative and the field strength contains the nonlinear term .
The running coupling is weak at high momentum scales. At one loop, for active flavours,The positive coefficient produces asymptotic freedom: short-distance, large- processes admit perturbation theory. The gluon self-interaction is crucial to its sign. At low scales the coupling grows and isolated colored particles are not observed; the physical spectrum consists of color-singlet hadrons, the phenomenon of confinement. A hard-produced quark or gluon radiates and undergoes hadronization, giving a collimated jet. The one-loop formula is not valid at and is not, by itself, a mathematical proof of confinement.
- Deep inelastic scattering resolves approximately pointlike spin-half constituents. Approximate Bjorken scaling supplies the starting parton picture, while the measured logarithmic departures from scaling agree with QCD evolution of parton distribution functions.
- The hadronic R ratio in electron-positron annihilation counts squared quark charges multiplied by three colors, with calculable strong corrections. It tests color multiplicity as well as the quark charge assignments.
- Two-jet events identify a quark-antiquark hard topology. Three-jet events test hard gluon radiation, ; their angular correlations support a spin-one gluon. Four-jet correlations and radiation patterns further probe the non-Abelian color factors and gluon self-interactions.
- Determinations of from processes at widely separated scales follow the same running coupling, rather than independent interaction strengths. Jet rates, event shapes, hadronic weak-boson decays and high-energy hadron collisions provide complementary tests.
- Lattice QCD calculations reproduce many hadronic masses and other low-energy quantities from the same underlying theory, connecting its strongly coupled regime to the observed spectrum.
Colour and identical-quark spin. A spatial ground-state baryon has a symmetric spatial wavefunction. For , or , the quark flavour state is also symmetric, and the total-spin state of three spin-one-half quarks is symmetric. Without another degree of freedom, the whole state would be symmetric under exchange of identical fermions, contrary to the Pauli exclusion principle.
A three-quark colour singlet supplies a completely antisymmetric factor, using the three color charge states. The remaining spatial-spin-flavour factor can then be symmetric. These baryons therefore provide evidence for an additional internal degree of freedom with at least three states, realized as colour in Quantum chromodynamics.
For the pair in , the spatial and quark flavour factors are symmetric under exchange of the two up quarks, while the colour factor is antisymmetric. The pair's spin state must consequently be symmetric. The identical-quark pair spin in a ground-state baryon isa triplet state. This holds whether the complete baryon has total spin or .
Origin of the pair interaction. The terms in the baryon hyperfine mass formula are effective colour-magnetic spin-spin interactions, arising from gluon exchange between the quarks' colour-magnetic moments. Each magnetic moment brings an inverse constituent quark mass, explaining the factor . The constant absorbs the strong coupling constant, colour factors and the spatial overlap. A common is a constituent-model approximation.
Spin algebra and the two masses. Set , so each dimensionless spin angular momentum operator satisfies . Label the two up quarks 1 and 2 and the strange quark 3. Squaring givesNext square the total spin :Substituting these pair sums into the baryon hyperfine mass formula yieldsTheir difference is . Repeating the argument for the identical pair in givesThus the model predicts equal Sigma and Xi hyperfine splittings:For a like-flavour comparison using exactly the supplied masses, the splitting is and the splitting is , giving . Averaging within the supplied isospin multiplets instead gives . The predicted equality captures the common scale but misses the observed ratio by about in this table. Different spatial overlaps, and hence different effective values, can account for departures from the common-coefficient approximation.
Radiative decay and recoil. In a radiative Sigma-to-Lambda transition, both baryons retain valence content . A photon couples to an electrically charged constituent while the final quarks are projected onto the lower baryon's spin-flavour wavefunction. The leading up- and down-quark diagrams are shown below; their contributions must be combined coherently. In the simplest model, the strange-quark spin operator alone cannot change the pair from its Sigma triplet to the Lambda singlet. The transition is an multipole radiation transition, consistent with .

. Details. For the photon energy, let and in natural units. Four-momentum conservation gives equal opposite final momenta of magnitude , soThe recoil kinetic energy of the Lambda baryon is ; assigning the entire mass difference to the photon would miss it.
Which baryons decay strongly? The open strong-decay thresholds for baryons require both sufficient energy and conserved quark flavour, including strangeness. The dominant strong decayers in the supplied table areThe Delta baryon channels have threshold near , below . The excited Sigma baryons can decay as or , and the excited Xi baryons as , all with open thresholds and conserved strangeness. Their positive-parity baryon states can emit the negative-parity pion in an odd relative orbital angular momentum, with already allowing total .
The last diagram illustrates : a gluon creates a pair and the quarks regroup into the two hadrons. No quark changes flavour at the gluon vertices. This is a representative strong pair-creation topology; quantitative hadronic decay rates require bound-state dynamics.
The Omega baryon is an important exception among the spin- states. Its cannot become the of through the strong interaction. Its flavour-conserving threshold is at least , above its mass, so it decays weakly. The ground-state strange octet also has no open strong channel: for example needs at least , and or needs still more than the relevant initial mass. The neutral Sigma decays electromagnetically as above; the neutron and the other unstable octet members decay weakly, while the proton is stable within these processes.
The nuclear determination of . A beta decay transition has no nuclear parity change and can proceed with zero lepton orbital angular momentum. The allowed scalar operator gives a Fermi transition; the rank-one Gamow-Teller transition operator cannot connect total nuclear spins zero to zero. The strong isobaric-analog transitions used for precision measurements are superallowed beta decays. A generic assignment alone would not guarantee superallowed strength if the states were nonanalog.
At the quark level the weak charged current converts and carries in the amplitude. The nuclear Fermi operator is an isospin ladder operator, givingHere denotes the known phase space dependence, with the dimensional factors included in the proportionality constant. In the isospin-symmetric limit, between analog states is fixed by isospin algebra, for example for the usual analog transitions. A measured partial half-life and the computed phase space factor give the comparative half-life; after radiative corrections and isospin breaking corrections, its inverse determines . The decay rate measures a magnitude squared, not the complex phase of .
Ds decay diagrams and CKM comparisons. The original PDF has , with . The local TeX drops that overbar; using instead would give a different flavour channel. Use the PDF's neutral antikaon throughout.
In the representative Ds nonleptonic tree amplitudes, the Ds meson spectator is . The elementary weak transitions are
In the first two channels, the produced joins the spectator to form ; the other quark joins . For the first channel this uses the component of the neutral pion. In the third, forms the phi meson and forms . The two possible final pairings have different colour contractions and hadronic matrix elements even when their weak CKM factors coincide.
The purely CKM rate suppression of relative to isThus is singly Cabibbo suppressed, while and are Cabibbo-favored at this level. If reduced hadronic strengths and phase space effects were equal, including the neutral-pion component would giveThe supplied branching fractions instead giveThe first observed ratio is times the neutral-pion-corrected simple estimate, requiring only an order-one remaining hadronic and phase space factor. Relative to , that remaining factor is . The two Cabibbo-favored channels differ by a factor despite equal CKM magnitudes. The CKM hierarchy therefore explains why one channel is much rarer, but it does not calculate the three exclusive branching fractions; spin, phase space, color charge and strong interaction final-state effects also matter.
What spin and parity establish. In either pseudoscalar-pseudoscalar final state, the total intrinsic spin is zero. Conservation of angular momentum for a spin-zero parent forces , so the final parity isopposite to the parent Ds meson. ConsequentlyFor a vector meson plus a pion, the intrinsic final spin is one. Coupling to total requires , giving , equal to the parent parity. Thus spin and parity alone permit a parity-conserving transition. That is the limited sense in which it is not necessarily weak from this information alone. In reality it is also weak: the initial charm flavour disappears, which the strong interaction and electromagnetic interaction conserve.
W branching fractions. In the massless-daughter, tree-level estimate, each leptonic channel contributes one common unit of decay width. Each accessible quark pair contributes because of the three final colours. The charged-current W branching-fraction counting denominator isOnly and are accessible up-type quarks; the large is irrelevant because a W boson cannot decay into the heavier top quark. HenceA final bottom quark arises in or , soThis counts the primary decay channels; finite daughter masses and QCD corrections refine the approximation.
The requested top-lifetime estimate and its limitation. Under the instructed equal-coefficient Sargent's rule scaling, and the mean lifetime is inversely proportional to that fifth power. Converting both masses to GeV givesThis is the requested order-of-magnitude estimate, assuming the same effective coefficient for the two total decay rates. It corresponds to and is longer than the hadronization time, roughly a few . Taken literally, it would allow top-flavored hadrons to form; it does not establish the physical statement that the top decays before hadronizing.
The extrapolation fails because Sargent's rule uses a low-energy Fermi interaction approximation, whereas permits with an on-shell W boson. The physical leading decay width instead scales asUsing , the Fermi constant and gives about at the supplied top mass. Then , with , gives . This corrected regime explains top-quark decay before hadronization.[ref]

The known active neutrinos are too light and too fast to supply the dominant cold dark matter. Their relativistic decoupling leaves substantial free streaming, which erases rather than seeds sufficiently small-scale structure; their allowed mass density is also inadequate for the dominant cold component. Changing a light active neutrino from Dirac to Majorana does not remove those problems. What can change the picture is an enlarged neutral-fermion sector containing sterile states with different masses, production and decay rates. A sufficiently long-lived sterile neutrino in a Majorana state can be a dark-matter candidate; Majorana character alone supplies neither stability nor the correct abundance.
For the spinor calculation, put and define , . Applying the given chiral projectors givesConsequentlywhere the last equality uses . Same-chirality Lorentz scalar products instead vanish: for example . The nonzero overlaps demonstrate the Lorentz scalar structures coupling left and right chirality. For to this is a particle-number-preserving Dirac coupling; for to the charge-conjugate sector it can describe a lepton-number-violating Majorana coupling.
There is a normalization subtlety: both displayed overlaps equal the on-shell mass parameter used to define the spinors. A chiral scalar spinor overlap verifies a coupling structure without fixing an independent Lagrangian coefficient . Repeating the on-shell construction with mass parameter would instead give the corresponding overlap ; this is a different input, rather than a newly derived parameter. The independent coefficients of a Dirac mass term and a Majorana mass term are defined byThe Majorana terms connect a field with its charge conjugate and violate the corresponding continuous lepton phase symmetry by two units. With only unbroken Standard Model gauge symmetry, a left-handed Majorana mass also requires electroweak symmetry breaking or an appropriate higher-dimensional operator; it is not an arbitrary gauge-invariant bare mass for a lepton doublet.
Use an all-left-handed Weyl basis . For real parameters the one-family Dirac-Majorana mass matrix isWriting gives an orthogonal diagonalization, with up to the rotation-sign convention. Massive-particle chirality and helicity are not identical; the familiar left/right helicity language becomes an approximation in the relativistic regime.
The characteristic polynomial isIts roots areFor Majorana fermions the nonnegative physical masses, as explained by physical Majorana mass and signed eigenvalue, are after a possible field rephasing; a negative real eigenvalue is not a negative physical rest mass. When ,The light state is predominantly , while the heavy state is predominantly . Each mass eigenstate combines its Weyl component and charge conjugate to form a Majorana field.
For , the heavy mass is approximately . In the type-I limit ,The seesaw light-mass estimate needs a Dirac scale: no unique numerical light mass follows because the Dirac mass and were not supplied. As an explicitly conditional illustration, choosing and gives ; this is an assumed Dirac scale, not additional exam data or a prediction from alone. A heavy seesaw state is also not automatically stable enough to be dark matter.
The conventional minimal Pati-Salam model gauge group isThe group printed in this paper is different: it contains two factors and only one . This is a discrepancy in the original PDF, not just in the transcription. The standard-model discussion below uses the conventional intended Pati-Salam model model. A literal theory with the printed product would require additional fermion representations and symmetry-breaking data that are not specified.
The Pati-Salam model unifies the three quark color charges with lepton number as a fourth color charge. A family forms left-handed and right-handed multiplets, including a right-handed neutrino. The extended color charge group contains quark-lepton gauge bosons, while the right-handed weak factor supplies right-handed charged currents after symmetry breaking. The Pati-Salam charge embedding isThe original paper explicitly develops the smaller local subgroup , as well as a larger underlying global structure; neither distinction licenses silently replacing the printed group.[ref]

The product group is a quark-lepton unification scheme rather than a simple gauge group with one automatically common coupling. Breaking the right-handed and symmetries can generate a large and light/heavy Majorana neutrinos through the seesaw. The gauge group alone does not uniquely fix their masses or guarantee a dark-matter lifetime. The most important laboratory test of Majorana character is neutrinoless double beta decay, with no outgoing neutrinos. Under light-neutrino exchange, the amplitude involvesThe coherent squared mixing elements allow phase cancellations. A null result constrains this combination within the assumed mechanism, rather than proving that all neutrinos are Dirac.
The observable is a peak in summed electron energy at the decay Q value, unlike the continuous two-neutrino spectrum. Enriched source material, large exposure, good energy resolution, underground operation and radiopure construction suppress backgrounds. germanium arrays use the source as a semiconductor detector; xenon time-projection chambers combine ionization, light and event-position information; bolometers measure deposited energy through a temperature rise. The GERDA collaboration's Phase-I study is a concrete example of an enriched-germanium source-detector search with background suppression.[ref]

energy calibration, resolution tails, radon and material backgrounds, cosmic-ray vetoes, signal-like event topology and sideband fits all need independent checks before a Q-value excess is convincing. Collider same-sign dilepton processes can test heavier Majorana states, but require a specified production and decay mechanism. Lepton-number violation, absolute-mass measurements and oscillation data provide complementary information; oscillations alone do not settle Majorana character. The basic Feynman diagrams have followed by , , or , with the latter pairs undergoing hadronization. See the charged-current diagrams in a. Neglect all daughter masses, QCD corrections and inaccessible charm final states, and assume lepton universality. Each leptonic mode then has one unit of decay width; the two accessible quark combinations have three color charge states and total CKM weight . ThereforeThe result is an inclusive parton model estimate. Perturbative QCD corrections increase the hadronic contribution, while muon mass, nonperturbative dynamics and radiative corrections also matter; the physical fraction is roughly .
Every ordinary hadronic mode already contains a tau neutrino, so it contains a lepton as well as hadrons if invisible particles are counted. For an additional visible charged lepton, a virtual photon can internally convert in a hadronic mode, for example . The extra electromagnetic vertices suppress such modes; they are not a large fraction of the inclusive width. Alternatively a daughter pion or kaon can decay semileptonically or leptonically in flight, for example followed by a semileptonic neutral-kaon decay. Those are secondary decay chains, not independent primary tau lepton branching fractions. Lepton-flavour-violating neutrinoless modes such as do not contribute appreciably in the Standard Model.
Assuming that the two listed leptonic decay categories exhaust the leptonic modes, the inclusive hadronic branching fraction is . ThusAt the simplest massless quark level, the W boson couples to and in three color charge states, so equal quark and lepton weak coupling constant values predictThis is a rough check of color multiplicity in a decay width and universal weak-current normalization. It is much less precise than the two-lepton ratio because hadronic Quantum chromodynamics and electroweak interaction corrections are sizeable: the data require a net correction factor near . They must be included before extracting a quark-to-lepton coupling constant ratio. It would be incorrect to interpret the excess over three directly as a failure of weak universality. The displayed exclusive hadronic modes alone would underestimate the inclusive sum.
