For z∈Rd, define zˉ=d−1∑jzj and sz2=d−1∑j(zj−zˉ)2. Layer normalization returns γ⊙(z−zˉ1)/sz2+ε+β, with learned coordinatewise scale γ, shift β, and fixed ε>0. In a transformer block, this normalization is applied across feature coordinates separately within each example and sequence position; it does not average over a batch.
