Sepp Hochreiter 2026-11-05
Sepp Hochreiter is a computer scientist working on machine learning and neural networks. His institutional profile identifies long short-term memory among his research topics. The1997paper with Jürgen Schmidhuber connects his earlier analysis of decaying learning signals to a recurrent architecture designed to preserve useful error flow.[ref] [ref]
A toy chain rule calculation explains the motivation. If a learning signal is multiplied by at each of twenty successive steps, its contribution is scaled by
That small contribution can make an early input difficult to associate with a much later training signal. The example illustrates the vanishing gradient problem; it is not a measurement of every recurrent neural network.
The long short-term memory design introduced a controlled internal path with constant error flow, while multiplicative gates regulate access. Its artificial-data experiments included successful learning across delays exceeding1000discrete steps. The reported capability belongs to those experiments and their architecture-specific learning rules, rather than implying that any trained instance will remember every input indefinitely.[ref]

His research and lectures also examine uncertainty about an intelligent system's objectives. That question differs from uncertainty about its observations: even a system that predicts its environment accurately can need information about what outcome its user wants.[ref]

Tony Cai 2026-11-05
Tony Cai develops methods and theory for high-dimensional statistics, statistical decision theory and statistical machine learning. His research includes functional data analysis and applications to genomics.[ref]
With Weidong Liu and Xi Luo, he introduced CLIME, estimating a sparse precision matrix through linear programming. Their results bound estimation error under sparsity and tail assumptions. The method makes a useful distinction between an optimization constraint and a theorem: positive definiteness of the final estimate is established under conditions, rather than imposed as a constraint in the columnwise programs.[ref]

Victor Chernozhukov 2026-11-05
Victor Chernozhukov works on econometrics and statistical inference with machine learning. With Alexandre Belloni and Lie Wang, he developed the Square-root Lasso, whose penalty calibration does not require knowing the noise scale.[ref]
He also coauthored work on double machine learning. Predicting an outcome accurately does not by itself estimate a causal effect accurately: errors in fitted nuisance functions can bias the target parameter. An orthogonal estimating equation reduces first-order sensitivity to those errors, while cross-fitting separates training observations from score evaluation. Valid confidence intervals still require the paper's identification and convergence assumptions.[ref]
Within-observer agreement versus reference agreement distinguishes consistency of an observer's repeated labels from concordance with a separately defined reference. The first asks whether the observer repeats a decision; the second asks whether that decision matches the comparison standard. In statistical classification, neither quantity can replace the other.
For cases, let and be one observer's labels at two readings, and the reference label. Define the two empirical agreement fractions
An original binary example has 100 cases, half reference-positive and half reference-negative. An observer reverses every reference label and repeats that reversal on the second reading. Then while . Perfect repeat agreement can coexist with complete reference disagreement. An observer always assigning the negative label also has perfect repeat agreement, but only 50 percent reference agreement in this balanced example.
A confusion matrix shows which categories contribute to disagreement, whereas a single overall percentage can conceal systematic shifts or an imbalanced case mix. Reference agreement is classification accuracy relative to that reference, not proof that the reference is infallible. A consensus panel, a later outcome and an independent molecular test answer different validation questions.
A primary 2017 study made this distinction experimentally by having pathologists interpret skin-biopsy sets twice, at least eight months apart, and comparing their interpretations with an experienced consensus reference. The study started with 240 cases and reported reproducibility separately from reference concordance.[ref] The delayed repeat reduced immediate recall, but did not transform repeated judgments into independent biological truths.
A useful evaluation preserves case identity, reading order and the exact reference procedure. If a machine learning classifier learns an observer's systematically shifted labels, it may reproduce that observer well while disagreeing with the external reference. Reporting both comparisons makes that limitation visible. Uncertainty estimates should also account for repeated cases and multiple readings rather than counting every label as an independent subject.
Xi Luo 2026-11-05
Xi Luo develops biostatistics and machine learning methods for biomedical data. His institutional profile identifies applications in neuroscience, genomics and disease research.[ref]
With Tony Cai and Weidong Liu, he developed CLIME for sparse precision matrix estimation. The method constrains the error of an approximate inverse of the sample covariance matrix and minimizes an entrywise absolute-value objective. Its computation separates into columnwise linear programs.[ref]
Yannis G. Kevrekidis Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
Yannis G. Kevrekidis is a chemical engineer whose research connects dynamical systems, multiscale modeling and machine learning. His institutional research description emphasizes how interactions at small scales produce larger-scale patterns, instabilities and dynamics in physical, chemical and biological systems.[ref]
With collaborators he developed equation-free modeling, in which detailed simulations are used to investigate coarse-scale behaviour even when a closed equation for the coarse variables is unavailable. The motivating distinction is between possessing a simulator of microscopic dynamics and possessing a compact equation for a few large-scale observables. This places numerical analysis, the choice of state variables and the extraction of useful descriptions at the centre of multiscale modeling.[ref]
