Consider one massive gauge field with after Higgs mechanism. For this comparison perform a Wick rotation and take a real nonzero momentum in Euclidean space . The transverse and longitudinal orthogonal projectors are
Here “longitudinal” means parallel to the off-shell four-momentum, not the physical longitudinal polarization of an on-shell massive gauge boson. The R-xi gauge quadratic vector operator and its inverse are
Multiplication verifies , since and . The unitary gauge vector operator lacks the gauge fixing derivative term in the longitudinal sector, giving
Thus every eigenvalue of falls as at fixed finite positive , whereas has the constant longitudinal eigenvalue . Unitary gauge consequently obscures ordinary power counting; this is not a failure of the physical theory.
Figure 1. . Original curves from the displayed quadratic operators. The common transverse eigenvalue equals the blue curve. The plotted longitudinal sector is off shell and is not a physical polarization probability. Details.
For a worked comparison choose . The dimensionless longitudinal eigenvalue is in unitary gauge, at , and at . Its crossover is : taking first gives a constant, whereas taking first gives zero. The two limits do not commute. Contracting the propagator between conserved external conserved currents projects away , but one cannot impose that simplification separately on every internal line of an interacting Non-Abelian gauge theory.
For the polar parametrization of the Abelian Higgs field with , adding cancels quadratic vector-phase mixing. The cross terms reduce, modulo a total derivative, to ; interactions remain. The Faddeev-Popov operator is proportional to , so the Faddeev-Popov ghosts couple to . The vector propagator falls as at fixed finite , but the polar kinetic and nonlinear gauge fixing vertices include terms of mass dimension above four. Manifest polynomial power counting instead uses Cartesian scalar variables with conventional R-xi gauge.
Choose on the Dirac field, in the fundamental representation of SU(2), and . Define the gauge field strength and the Adjoint representation gauge covariant derivative by
The required gauge-fixed Yang-Mills Lagrangian in a covariant gauge, including the matter term, is
Here and are independent Grassmann fields in the Adjoint representation: the Faddeev-Popov ghost fields and antighost fields. Under an infinitesimal gauge transformation, ; hence the Lorenz gauge function varies by . Its Faddeev-Popov determinant is represented by the ghost term, with an irrelevant field-independent determinant sign absorbed into normalization. Integration by parts gives , explicitly showing the ghost-gluon vertex.
There is no scalar vacuum expectation value here, so R-xi gauge reduces to the linear covariant gauge displayed above, with no Goldstone boson term. At the Feynman gauge gauge boson propagator is . With Fourier convention and all three boson four-momenta incoming, this choice gives exactly the source's three-boson Feynman rule, and the matter interaction vertex is . The sign of has been explicitly chosen here; the QED convention in question 2 instead has vertex .
Unitary gauge fixes the scalar phase to zero. Locally choose in part b; then and . The remaining fields are the radial Higgs mode and a massive vector. Its quadratic Lagrangian density is and its gauge-boson propagator is
For , introduce the transverse and longitudinal orthogonal projectors and . Omitting the infinitesimal in this algebraic decomposition,
At large momentum in Euclidean space, the transverse coefficient falls as but the longitudinal coefficient approaches a constant of order . Thus power counting applied directly to unitary gauge Feynman diagrams suggests increasingly severe ultraviolet divergences. This hides the renormalizability of physical scattering amplitudes; it does not disprove it. A finite- R-xi gauge exposes the better propagator scaling while preserving the fields needed to track the cancellations.
After the quadratic mixing cancellation, the vector inverse quadratic operator is
Inverting its two orthogonal projectors and multiplying by gives
Equivalently . At fixed finite , both sectors fall as at large momentum in Euclidean space; gives , and taking at fixed recovers unitary gauge. The latter limit is not uniform in ultraviolet momentum.
The expected power counting conclusion is that this behaviour, together with polynomial interactions of mass dimension at most four in Cartesian scalar variables and the gauge symmetry identities, permits renormalization of spontaneously broken gauge theories using a finite set of physical parameters. The propagator alone is not sufficient to establish that claim in the polar variables of this question. In fact, part b contains and , of dimensions five and six, and the nonlinear gauge fixing term contains , also of dimension six. Ordinary power counting is consequently not manifest in these variables.
For a representation where it is manifest, write and choose the usual polynomial R-xi gauge function . It yields the same free vector propagator, cancels the quadratic mixing, and leaves only dimension-at-most-four interactions, including its Faddeev-Popov ghosts. This supplies the missing vertex condition in the source's proposed inference; the equivalence theorem for field redefinitions relates physical predictions near the vacuum. Good propagator falloff is the necessary ingredient illustrated by the requested formula, rather than a complete proof for arbitrary parametrizations or nonlinear choices of gauge fixing.
Use natural units and the Minkowski metric . A massive spin-one particle has three physical particle polarizations, whereas a massless gauge boson has two. Giving a vector a mass must account for this extra longitudinal state while preserving a positive physical state space, controlled high-energy scattering and, if a fundamental perturbative theory is sought, renormalizability.
At the free-field level there is no inconsistency. The Proca action
gives the Proca equation . Taking its divergence gives , and then . For the divergence constraint removes one of the four components, leaving three positive-norm physical modes. The time component is constrained, rather than an independent negative-norm propagating oscillator. The mass term does, however, change under , so the ordinary massless gauge invariance is no longer manifest.
The difficulty becomes acute for generic interactions. Inverting the quadratic operator gives the Proca propagator
The longitudinal part approaches order at large momentum, rather than falling as . Thus the usual ultraviolet power counting deteriorates. There is a parallel external-state problem: for ,
Longitudinal external legs can generate powers of in a scattering amplitude. These are the high-energy obstruction for a hard vector mass. Conserved Abelian currents can remove dangerous contractions, so one should not conclude that every massive-vector interaction is impossible.
For a massive non-Abelian vector with gauge-like cubic and quartic couplings, cancellations among diagrams remove the largest powers, but without a suitable additional sector longitudinal scattering still grows like , where is the symmetry-breaking scale. A partial-wave coefficient is then of order . Partial-wave unitarity requires its real part to remain bounded, so perturbation theory fails at energies of order the electroweak scale times a modest loop factor, around the TeV scale for electroweak vectors. This is a limit on the perturbative description, not a proof that a low-energy massive-vector effective field theory is inconsistent.
The Higgs mechanism supplies a weakly coupled completion. For an Abelian example, take a complex scalar field with
Locally write . Its gauge-covariant kinetic term becomes
The combination is invariant under , . In unitary gauge , it contains with , as well as the correlated and interactions. The two original gauge polarizations and two real scalar components become three massive-vector polarizations and one radial Higgs boson. The would-be Goldstone boson supplies the longitudinal state. This counting explains why the Goldstone theorem for spontaneously broken global symmetries does not imply an extra physical massless particle here. Local gauge symmetry is a redundancy; choosing a Higgs background after gauge fixing does not explicitly break the gauge invariance of the action.
The extra scalar interactions also repair high-energy scattering. By the Goldstone-boson equivalence theorem, the leading longitudinal-vector amplitude can be computed using the would-be Goldstone bosons. For a charged-to-neutral channel in the linear scalar model, the scalar contact and radial-exchange terms give
This Higgs cancellation in longitudinal vector scattering removes the uncontrolled growth. It also shows why a very large scalar self-coupling would itself make perturbation theory unreliable; introducing a scalar is not a license to ignore partial-wave unitarity.
Although the unitary gauge propagator looks like the badly behaved Proca propagator, renormalizability is conveniently established in an R-xi gauge. Using Cartesian scalar fluctuations, the quadratic mixing is . The gauge-fixing term cancels it and gives
At fixed finite this falls as . The would-be scalar modes and Faddeev-Popov ghosts remain in intermediate calculations. Gauge identities, organized through BRST symmetry, make unphysical states cancel from physical amplitudes and constrain counterterms to the gauge-invariant renormalizable form. With a renormalizable scalar sector and cancellation of gauge anomalies, spontaneously broken gauge theory is renormalizable and unitary on its physical states; the bosonic construction is demonstrated in the original massive Yang-Mills renormalizability proof. The ultraviolet limit and limit do not commute, so the unitary-gauge numerator alone is not a valid disproof of this result.
In the Standard Model, a Higgs doublet breaks the manifest electroweak group from to . The scalar kinetic term yields
Three scalar directions supply the longitudinal polarizations of and , while the unbroken electromagnetic generator leaves the photon massless. The radial Higgs boson remains physical.
There is an important Abelian alternative. The Stueckelberg mechanism introduces a scalar with , invariant under , . With suitable conserved-current couplings this can describe a renormalizable massive Abelian gauge theory without a radial Higgs particle. A naive non-Abelian analogue involves a nonlinear group-valued scalar and derivative interactions suppressed by inverse powers of the symmetry-breaking scale; it is generally an effective field theory, not a power-counting-renormalizable substitute. Strongly coupled or composite sectors can provide other completions. A free vector mass is consistent; the central problem is obtaining the longitudinal state and its interactions in a theory with controlled ultraviolet behavior and physical unitarity.
Renormalization of spontaneously broken gauge theories Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-25
Renormalization of spontaneously broken gauge theories means that the Higgs mechanism can generate gauge boson masses while a fixed finite set of renormalized couplings, masses and field normalizations still suffices to absorb ultraviolet divergences. The symmetry constrains the counterterms even when the chosen vacuum expectation value hides it. This makes radiative corrections to the electroweak interaction calculable after inputs have been fixed by renormalization conditions.
A useful distinction is between choosing variables that display the physical particles and choosing variables that display good power counting. Unitary gauge removes the would-be Goldstone bosons from the explicit fields. R-xi gauge keeps them and the required Faddeev-Popov ghosts in intermediate Feynman diagrams, exposing simpler large-momentum behavior. The physical scattering amplitude must agree after all contributions and counterterms have been included consistently.
In Renormalizable Lagrangians for massive Yang-Mills fields (1971), Gerard 't Hooft constructed spontaneously broken gauge theories with massive gauge bosons. His worked SU(2) gauge theory with an adjoint Higgs field leaves a massless photon; it is a demonstration model, not the full chiral Standard Model. The gauge fixing, Faddeev-Popov ghosts and Ward identities connect renormalizability with physical unitarity.[ref]
Regularization and renormalization of gauge fields (1972), by Gerard 't Hooft and Martinus J. G. Veltman, developed dimensional regularization with recursive subtraction of ultraviolet subdivergences. It continued Feynman integrals in the dimension, keeping the relevant Ward identities in non-anomalous cases; its final section examined quantum anomalies. The procedure does not make an inconsistent chiral gauge theory consistent: gauge anomaly cancellation remains essential.[ref]
The organizing proof outline is to use good large-momentum propagators, subtract every divergent subgraph, and constrain the remaining local divergences by the Ward identities. A finite family of allowed counterterms must close under this operation at every loop order. The same identities must remove unphysical intermediate contributions from physical amplitudes. Power counting alone establishes neither closure nor these cancellations. Modern BRST symmetry packages these restrictions; the scalar subtraction below illustrates only locality.
