For a stable nonrelativistic thermal relic, compare energy densities rather than number densities. If and , its density relative to baryons is . Requiring this ratio below an allowed dark-matter-to-baryon ratio means . With fixed rate parameters this excludes the weakly interacting large-mass branch, while the sufficiently Boltzmann-suppressed smaller-mass branch can satisfy the density bound. Decay or a nonthermal initial abundance requires a different constraint.
In a three-level ion, statistical equilibrium must include collisional coupling between both upper levels as well as excitations from the ground. The upper populations solve a two-by-two linear system when expressed relative to the ground population. Their line ratio is a rational function of electron density, interpolating between a collisionally excited low-density limit and a collisional Boltzmann limit. Closely spaced upper energies reduce temperature sensitivity, but neglecting upper-level collisional mixing can bias the inferred density.
A mass above a sufficiently wide estuary experiences additional downward gravity when extra water is present. Approximating the tide as a plane slab of density and added thickness gives . A linear spring with initial extension changes by . This isolates direct water attraction; it omits finite shoreline geometry, buoyancy, structural motion and terrestrial tides.
For , constant density and Keplerian , the Michael criterion for axisymmetric toroidal-field interchange becomes . Instability therefore requires and . For a field varying on the radial scale , this is an orbital-speed field, much stronger than a gas-pressure-scale field with in a thin disk. Steep radial field gradients require the exact derivative criterion rather than this scale estimate. The instability is powered by the toroidal field distribution and is distinct from weak vertical-field magnetorotational instability.

A square wire loop partly in a uniform field has linear drag , giving velocity-relaxation time . For uniform wire of mass density and resistivity , , independent of wire dimensions.
Movement before final burial can sort remains by size, shape and density. Articulation alone cannot prove local origin, and disarticulation alone cannot prove transport.
Triplon 2026-10-20
A mobile spin-triplet excitation above a singlet background in a quantum magnet. At low density, an appropriate triplet branch can be described as bosonic quasiparticles with an effective mass and repulsive interaction. Applied magnetic field can lower one branch toward condensation. The term does not imply that the total excitation number is conserved on thermodynamic timescales.
For a three-dimensional quadratic branch, the critical thermal density is . Inserting this into the mean-field gap-closing condition gives . This is a dilute low-temperature model; finite bandwidth, anisotropy and changes in interactions can alter its applicability outside that regime.
Two-box overturning model 2026-10-24
A reduced model with warm and cold mixed reservoirs whose signed exchange volume flux is proportional to their density difference. For fixed temperature contrast and reference-salinity freshwater forcing, the stationary salt budget is . A linear equation of state then gives . Positive circulation has two branches below a saddle-node bifurcation; the stronger positive branch and the reversed branch are stable under the usual salt budget dynamics.
For interaction density , the combinations diagonalize the equations into independent Klein-Gordon equations with the displayed mass squares. When , all Fourier frequencies are real and nonzero. Initial data in one original field generally excite both normal combinations.
The convolution of two independent sequential exponential waiting times has the displayed normalized density and mean . At equal rates its limit is . A measured density of this form supports a multistep kinetic mechanism without uniquely identifying its hidden chemical intermediates.
U-tube liquid oscillation Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-10-25
In a uniform U-tube containing incompressible liquid of density , cross section and total moving length , let one surface fall by while the other rises by . The height difference is , and potential energy relative to equilibrium is . The whole moving mass is , so . Newton's second law or energy conservation gives and . This assumes small excursions that keep the free surfaces in the uniform vertical limbs.
Vapor density 2026-10-31
The density of a vapor relative to a specified reference gas at the same temperature and pressure.
Volcanic loading 2026-10-24
Addition of erupted or intruded rock as a gravitational load on a planetary surface or interior. Deposited thickness, density, geometry and emplacement history control isostatic adjustment and lithospheric flexure. Thermal and compositional changes in the source can supply additional effects distinct from the weight of the deposited material.
Water-mass transformation 2026-10-25
A change in the amount of ocean water belonging to a specified density class, driven by surface heat flux, freshwater exchange or interior mixing. Advection along an isopycnal transports a water mass without necessarily transforming it; diapycnal mixing can transfer water between density classes.
William Ramsay 2026-10-18
A chemist who led the chemistry department at University College London from 1887 to 1913. His isolation of argon followed John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh's observation that atmospheric nitrogen had greater density than chemically prepared nitrogen.[ref]
In August 1896, Pieter Zeeman observed broadened sodium spectral lines at Leiden, initially without resolved components. His lecture describes a slit and concave diffraction grating, then compares the broadening with the sodium doublet separation: about one thirtieth, roughly ångström. This supplied a spectral reference scale, not an absolute magnetic field calibration. Later cadmium photographs displayed resolved transverse triplets and axial doublets.[ref]
The fuller report specifies a concave diffraction grating of ten-foot radius with 14,438 lines per inch, an adjustable slit and a micrometer eyepiece with vertical crosswire. Salt in a flame between electromagnet poles supplied the sodium spectral lines. Repeated switching broadened and restored them. To test changes in flame temperature or vapour density, Pieter Zeeman examined photon absorption through a heated porcelain tube with water-cooled glass windows. The arc lamp was displaced from the magnet and its light redirected by a mirror to avoid disturbing the arc. Rotating a narrower tube made the absorption spectral lines equally broad at different heights; the magnetic field still broadened their whole length.[ref]
For the axial test, pierced electromagnet poles let the light travel along the magnetic field. A quarter-wave plate and polarizer selected one broadened edge; rotating the analyser by or reversing the magnet current exchanged the visible edge. The crosswire made its displacement detectable. This tested electromagnetic polarization as well as line width. For its rough estimate the report compared each side's widening with the sodium doublet separation, obtaining about one fortieth, and stated an approximate magnetic field intensity in historical units. These passages give no absolute field-calibration procedure; the inferred charge-to-mass ratio was explicitly a first approximation.[ref]
Hendrik Antoon Lorentz's charged-oscillator theory connected the observed splitting to moving electric charge. In modern language, a line-position measurement needs a wavelength or frequency calibration and an independent magnetic field calibration before it determines a magnetic dipole moment. Resolving the individual components adds the transition information used in the worked example below.
