Adam R. Aron Created 2026-10-25 Updated 2026-11-05
A cognitive neuroscientist whose research includes patient and experimental studies of action stopping.
Adolescent conversation safety-behavior experiment Created 2026-10-25 Updated 2026-11-05
Leigh and colleagues compared counterbalanced conversations under combined internal-focus/safety behavior instructions versus external-focus/safety-reduction instructions. Self, partner and independent ratings in a symptom-selected sample provided experimental evidence for the combined manipulation. Because two processes changed together, this experiment does not by itself identify their separate causal effects or establish treatment efficacy in diagnosed patients.[ref]
Self-focused attention and safety behaviours maintain social anxiety in adolescents: An experimental study by Eleanor Leigh and others. PLOS ONE 16, e0247703; counterbalanced conversations, 57 participants, partner and independent ratings
Adoptive T-cell therapy Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
Transfer of prepared T cells to a patient to supply or amplify a therapeutic immune response, including expanded tumour-derived or genetically engineered populations.
Antipsychotic Created 2026-10-24 Updated 2026-11-05
Antoine Bechara Created 2026-10-25 Updated 2026-11-05
A cognitive neuroscientist whose patient studies investigated decision-making across immediate and future consequences.
Carbuncle Created 2026-10-31 Updated 2026-11-05
Clinical observation Created 2026-10-31 Updated 2026-11-05
A systematically described finding about a patient’s condition or course. Observation supplies evidence for a hypothesis, while a causal claim requires attention to alternatives, timing and the way measurements were obtained.
Gastroparesis Created 2026-10-31 Updated 2026-11-05
Delayed gastric emptying without a mechanical blockage explaining it. Symptoms and measured emptying can differ in degree, so the physiological measurement and the patient’s experience provide complementary information.[ref]
Gout Created 2026-10-31 Updated 2026-11-05
An inflammatory arthritis associated with deposition of urate crystals in anatomical joints. Historical descriptions of podagra require interpretation rather than automatic assignment of every ancient patient to this modern category. [ref]
Hospital ward ventilation Created 2026-10-31 Updated 2026-11-05
Lymphodepletion Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
Reduction of a patient's lymphocyte populations, sometimes used to prepare for adoptive cell therapy. Its effects and toxicities are part of the full treatment regimen.
Medical researcher Created 2026-10-24 Updated 2026-11-05
A scientist investigating human health, disease or medical interventions. Research can connect mechanisms with clinical outcomes, but a laboratory effect alone does not establish benefit for patients.
Nurse Created 2026-10-24 Updated 2026-11-05
A trained practitioner of nursing. Monitoring a patient’s course, administering prescribed care and communicating changes connect direct observation with coordinated clinical work.
Nursing Created 2026-10-24 Updated 2026-11-05
A healthcare discipline concerned with assessment, care and support of patients’ physiological and functional needs. Repeated observation connects changes over time with the practical delivery and evaluation of care.
Parkinson's disease Created 2026-10-24 Updated 2026-11-05
A neurodegenerative disorder with motor and nonmotor manifestations, including motivational difficulties in some patients. Comparisons across dopamine-related medication states can inform mechanisms but do not selectively manipulate a single cognitive process. The disease name commemorates James Parkinson.
Patient-derived xenograft Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
Qing Wang Created 2026-10-24 Updated 2026-11-05
Researcher in cardiac genetics. Wang and collaborators identified voltage-gated sodium channel mutations in patients with long QT syndrome, connecting an inherited cardiac rhythm disorder with changes in a specific molecular channel.[ref]

Surgeon 2026-11-05
A surgeon is a physician with specialized training in evaluating and treating conditions for which surgery may be appropriate. The role includes deciding whether an operation is justified, performing the relevant operative work, and directing perioperative care. The American College of Surgeons describes competence in terms of education, training, experience and demonstrated proficiency, rather than the ability to perform an isolated manual maneuver.[ref]
Surgical reasoning connects anatomy with physiology. Knowing where structures lie is different from knowing how an intervention will change their function. The response of living tissue also connects biomechanics, healing and the condition of the surrounding tissue. An operation can achieve an immediate geometric objective while its later biological outcome still depends on these processes.
An original mechanical example illustrates why local geometry matters. If a tensile force is carried uniformly through load-bearing area , nominal stress isA chosen force over gives ; the same force over half that area gives . This idealized calculation explains a geometric sensitivity, rather than specifying a tissue's actual strength or a surgical technique. Real tissue can be anisotropic and nonlinear, so a nominal stress alone does not determine its biological response.
Evaluating outcomes also requires scientific judgment. In a hypothetical audit, 20 adverse outcomes among 200 cases give a crude rate , while 5 among 100 give . The difference does not by itself identify a difference in surgical skill or treatment effect: the groups may differ in underlying illness, operation complexity and follow-up. Causal inference requires a comparison that addresses how the groups were formed, rather than treating every outcome percentage as a controlled experiment.
The decision is shared with the patient. Informed consent includes the proposed operation, its risks and benefits, alternatives including nonoperative care, and the roles of the treating team. Responsibility also extends beyond the operation through postoperative and continuing care.[ref]

Thus operative skill, biological understanding and evaluation of evidence are connected parts of the profession. Thomas John Maclagan Created 2026-10-31 Updated 2026-11-05
A physician who analyzed hospital records of typhus and treatment practices. Recorded treatment quantities were observations about selected patients, making them different from standardized experimentally assigned exposures.[ref]
