Testosterone 2026-10-20
Testosterone is a steroid with a conjugated C3-ketone/C4=C5 fragment. 5α-reductase adds hydride at C5 and a proton at C4 to make dihydrotestosterone.
Track grain density 2026-10-18
The track grain density is the number of resolved developed grains along reconstructed track length , divided by . It is a response variable, not a universal conversion from darkness to energy. Overlapping developed grains, exposure fading, processing and optical spatial resolution can all change what is counted. Calibration must use comparable material and viewing conditions.
Cesare Lattes specifically recalls distinguishing meson tracks from proton tracks using their greater deflection by scattering and changing track grain density toward the stopping point. He also recounts a secondary track that left the coating, requiring extrapolation rather than a directly measured stopping distance.[ref]
Meu Trabalho em Física de Mésons com Emulsões Nucleares by Cesare Mansueto Giulio Lattes. 1984 recollection, paragraph beginning “Devo adicionar”: scattering, grain density and an escaping secondary; no numerical grain count is reported here
For a candidate joined track, the useful questions are whether both branches actually meet in depth, whether the incoming branch is consistent with stopping there, and whether the outgoing branch has the expected particle range and track grain density. A visible change of direction alone cannot distinguish a decay from scattering or an accidental crossing. Examining successive focal depths tests a projected crossing; comparison with ordinary stopping tracks tests the identification. These are measurement checks, not a claim that the original plates provided time-resolved movies.
A nuclear emulsion integrates exposure over time. It does not by itself supply the time between two apparently joined branches. Finite spatial resolution also limits how tightly one can establish their common origin: developed marks and the microscope response are much larger than a subatomic particle. There is no single resolution number applicable to every emulsion, developer and optical arrangement.
Trans vinylic coupling 2026-10-20
vicinal coupling between protons on opposite sides of an alkene. In many ordinary terminal alkenes its magnitude exceeds the corresponding cis coupling.
UA1 experiment Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
The 1983 UA1 experiment paper used proton–antiproton collisions at . A high-transverse momentum electron candidate required a track matched to an electromagnetic particle shower, with little energy behind it in the hadronic particle calorimeter. Test beams checked electron and pion responses; ordinary events and particle jet samples checked the imbalance resolution. Two searches, beginning with isolated electrons and with missing transverse energy, converged on the same candidates. Conversion pairs, hadrons and heavy-flavor decays were examined as backgrounds.[ref]
With only up/down valence quarks and no antiquarks, the quark number sum rule and leading parton model expression give the charge-squared number moment . The squared charges are for up and for down, so the proton has and the neutron has . Restricting the flavour list to up/down does not itself remove antiquarks; the no-sea assumption is essential for these individual moments.
W and Z discovery experiments 2026-10-18
A W boson decay can leave one visible charged lepton and a large missing transverse momentum; a Z boson decay can instead supply two visible leptons whose four-momenta determine an invariant mass. The two signatures answer the same existence question with different missing information. The electroweak unification history recognized by the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics predates these 1983 observations: the W boson and Z boson were predictions to test, rather than particles first proposed in 1983.
The Super Proton-Antiproton Synchrotron stored counterrotating proton and antiproton beams; stochastic cooling made accumulation of the scarce antiprotons practical. Carlo Rubbia's 1984 lecture describes track reconstruction in a large drift chamber inside a magnetic field, surrounded by segmented particle calorimeters. Their nearly complete angular coverage allowed an imbalance test for unobserved neutrinos.[ref]
Weak acid Created 2026-10-13 Updated 2026-10-14
A weak acid establishes a chemical equilibrium between its proton-donating form and its conjugate base in water. For a neutral monoprotic acid , the aqueous chemical equation isWater accepts a proton to become hydronium; is the conjugate base. The double arrow denotes reversible exchange at chemical equilibrium, not equal populations. The acid dissociation constant and composition determine the hydronium concentration; substituting total chemical acid concentration into the pH formula is generally incorrect.
“Weak” describes the tendency to transfer a proton in a specified solvent, rather than how much chemical acid was dissolved. A weak acid can be concentrated, and a strong acid can be dilute. Even the same weak acid can have a large weak acid dissociation fraction after sufficient dilution, while its acid dissociation constant stays fixed at the same temperature and standard state conventions.[ref]
