Balmer series Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
The Balmer series consists of hydrogen transitions terminating at principal quantum number . Its emission wavelengths obey for , a special case of the Rydberg formula.
The first transitions fall in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum, while the high-level lines converge toward a shorter-wavelength limit with . A hydrogen discharge observed through a spectroscope shows separated lines rather than a smooth continuum because the atomic energy differences are discrete.
The same level separations can produce absorption when atoms initially occupy the lower state. Temperature, excitation and the number of atoms in that state affect line strength; a wavelength formula alone does not predict the observed relative intensities.
Be star Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-11-05
A Be star, in the classical sense used here, is a rapidly rotating B-type star that shows or has shown emission in Balmer series lines from circumstellar gas. Its decretion disk is approximately Keplerian rotation and differs from a young star's dust-bearing protoplanetary disk. Disk growth and loss can change the emission spectrum. The viscous disk model describes the gas after injection; it does not by itself explain how material is lifted from the stellar surface.[ref]

Brackett series 2026-10-24
The Brackett series consists of hydrogen spectral lines with final principal quantum number four and initial principal quantum number greater than four. The Rydberg formula gives . Its infrared wavelengths make these recombination lines less susceptible to interstellar extinction than optical Balmer series lines; quantitative use requires the appropriate effective recombination coefficient.
Discharge spectra and the Bohr model Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
In On the Constitution of Atoms and Molecules, Part I (1913), pp. 8–9, Niels Bohr interprets existing hydrogen discharge and astronomical spectra. Electrical discharge in a vacuum tube removes electrons; recombination supplies spectral lines. This is a theoretical interpretation, without a reported spectrograph of his own.[ref]

An actual optical obstacle appears in Theodore Lyman's measurements: hydrogen discharge light entered an evacuated spectrograph directly through a slit, avoiding a transmitting window. A concave reflection diffraction grating dispersed the light onto photographic film. Pumping preserved the vacuum; a second slit supplied a known spectral displacement for wavelength calibration. Gas contamination and vacuum leaks limited the measurement. This apparatus resolved ultraviolet spectral lines; it did not image orbits.[ref]

For a separate original calibration exercise, suppose an idealized spectrograph returns synthetic vacuum line positions for , with chosen additive offset . Assume its dispersion scale is already known and only this offset is uncertain. Compare the finite-mass prediction with the fixed-nucleus prediction . Calibrate each model using only the line: . Then hold that offset fixed and test the other lines with residualsFor the finite-mass model every . The fixed-nucleus model has and residuals , , . Algebraically : one additive calibration cannot absorb a multiplicative change of the wavelengths. Allowing an unknown multiplicative dispersion factor as well would make the two models degenerate in this exercise, so independent scale calibration matters.

For emission take integers . Applying conservation of energy to the model's internal energy difference, while neglecting the much smaller whole-atom photon recoil, givesThus Johannes Robert Rydberg's Rydberg formula is a difference of two energy levels expressed as a spectroscopic wavenumber. The same constants determine every line; there is no new parameter for each electronic transition. With the chosen inputs, . All wavelengths below are calculated in vacuum, not air, and are rounded model predictions rather than historical measurements.
The conventional names commemorate Theodore Lyman and Johann Jakob Balmer. Fixing produces the ultraviolet Lyman series, beginning with the Lyman-alpha line; fixing produces the Balmer series. As , the wavelength approaches : at the Lyman limit and for the Balmer series. Crowding follows directly from . Discreteness therefore coexists with a series limit.
Correct line positions do not give wave intensities, lifetimes or electric-dipole selection rules for hydrogen. Those require a theory of the wavefunctions and their coupling to electromagnetic radiation. The circular model also omits spin, relativistic corrections and the Lamb shift. Its successful gross energy levels do not make its assumed orbits modern atomic orbitals.
Johann Jakob Balmer Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
A Swiss mathematician and teacher remembered for finding an empirical pattern in the hydrogen emission spectrum. In 1885 he expressed the wavelengths of its visible spectral lines through a simple formula in integer parameters. The resulting Balmer series connected measured wavelengths that had previously looked like separate experimental numbers.
Balmer's result was a numerical regularity, rather than a physical explanation of atomic structure. Its success included a further predicted line consistent with observation. The later Bohr model explained why transitions between discrete energy levels produce such a series. The episode shows how a mathematical pattern can become evidence guiding a later physical theory. Source.A hydrogen recombination line is a discrete spectral line produced when radiative recombination captures an electron into an excited bound level and a subsequent radiative cascade emits photons. The free-to-bound capture itself produces a continuum; the later bound-to-bound transitions produce the recombination lines. For example, H-alpha is the transition in the Balmer series.
For the neutral hydrogen absorbing an ionizing stellar continuum, the principal bound-free transition is photoionization from the ground state into the continuum. Most neutral hydrogen is in its ground state, and the photoionization cross section is largest near its threshold, falling approximately as above it. Dominance of the population-weighted opacity is intended here; this does not mean that every excited-state microscopic cross section is smaller at every frequency.
In an ionization-bounded, optically thick nebula, direct radiative recombination into emits an ionizing photon that promptly photoionizes another hydrogen atom. One ion disappears and another is created: there is no net removal of an ion from the global budget. Case B recombination therefore uses , with local recycling of ground-state recombination photons. This is the on-the-spot approximation, rather than an unconditional property of radiative recombination: if those photons escape, direct capture does produce net neutralization and a Case A treatment is appropriate.

backward extrapolation of exponential closed-box star formation. Denote the present age of the universe by . With the last paragraph's ,Adopting a present age of the universe for the estimate gives about , requiring of gas at that epoch in the same model. The boxed expression makes the dependence on the adopted present age explicit. This is an extreme history for a present Milky-Way-like system, although intense high-redshift star formation by itself is not forbidden.
The extrapolation forces a fixed gas reservoir to decline exponentially over many gas-depletion times. Gas accretion, outflows, evolving gas density and star-formation efficiency, delayed recycling, and galaxy assembly break that assumption. The empirical disk-averaged relation is not a universal constant-efficiency law for all gas: the original measurements combined Balmer series H-alpha, atomic gas, carbon monoxide and infrared data, with tracer calibration and dust corrections entering the inference.[ref]

Quasar Created 2026-10-03 Updated 2026-11-05
A quasar is an extremely luminous active galactic nucleus whose compact central emission can outshine its host galaxy and be observed across cosmological distances. Its apparent resemblance to a star originally concealed its nature: a small angular image does not establish a small physical size or a nearby distance. In 1963, Maarten Schmidt identified familiar Balmer series emission lines in the unusual optical spectrum of 3C 273, shifted together to a redshift of 0.158. The optical spectra came from a spectrograph on the 200-inch telescope at Palomar. Interpreting the shift as cosmological implied a distant, extraordinarily luminous galactic nucleus. Modern black-hole accretion models provide the compact power source for that luminosity.[ref]

Rydberg formula Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
The Rydberg formula relates wavelengths of hydrogenic spectral lines to pairs of principal quantum numbers. For hydrogen emission from to , , where includes the electron–proton reduced mass correction to the infinite-nuclear-mass Rydberg constant.
Holding the lower level fixed generates a series: gives the Lyman series and the Balmer series. Higher upper levels accumulate toward a series limit because their binding energies approach zero. For example, gives , whereas the Balmer limit has .
The Bohr model reproduces this gross energy pattern, while a more complete treatment includes fine structure and other corrections. A precise measured line position therefore requires more specification than two principal quantum numbers alone.
