A black surface receiving absorbed stellar irradiance , beneath a single non-solar-absorbing cloud with thermal emissivity , satisfies when both bodies are in pure radiative equilibrium. The surface balance is , giving the displayed result. If instead convection pins , the whole-column balance gives ; the nonradiative energy budget cannot then be discarded.
At fixed measured count slope, , whereas at fixed measured diffusion coefficient, . First-order propagation of uncertainty follows by taking logarithmic derivatives:For independent small errors, the radius contributes to the relative variance of , compared with for . Shared radius and temperature calibrations make the two estimates correlated; their agreement is therefore not two wholly independent determinations. As a finite-error example, overestimating by multiplies the respective answers by and .
This explains the importance of the radius cross-checks in the 1909 memoir: testing the Stokes drag law through an independent radius estimate helps prevent circular inference.[ref]

Convection must also be excluded: a residual horizontal speed adds to an uncentred mean squared displacement, making a linear fit misleading. Stefan–Boltzmann law Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
The Stefan–Boltzmann law gives the total hemispherical radiant exitance of an ideal blackbody at absolute temperature :Here is the Stefan-Boltzmann constant. Total means integrated over all wavelengths; hemispherical means integrated over all outward directions with the projected area weighting. Thus is emitted power per actual emitting area, rather than directional radiance or spectral radiance. Absolute temperature must be in kelvin; raising a Celsius reading to the fourth power gives the wrong result. A uniform surface of area emits radiant flux . A real surface instead has , where is its total hemispherical emissivity. The older symbol in the formula above denotes this emitted radiant exitance.[ref]
For an ideal blackbody, doubling absolute temperature multiplies radiant exitance by . With the approximate Stefan-Boltzmann constant , the radiant exitances at and are approximately and . This steep response explains why thermal radiation becomes so consequential at high temperature. It also enables heat transfer through a vacuum, where thermal conduction through a gas and convection are absent.

. Original model curves. The left panel is total hemispherical blackbody radiant exitance. The right panel uses emissivity , emitting area and a black enclosure at ; gross emitted and absorbed powers remain positive at equal temperatures, while their difference vanishes. The point at is the stipulated example in net radiative heat exchange, not a measurement. Details.A short derivation integrates Planck's law in its frequency form. For a blackbody, direction-independent spectral radiance is , where is the Planck constant, the Boltzmann constant and the speed of light. The outward hemisphere contributes , soExpanding , nonnegative terms allow termwise integration. Repeated integration by parts gives ; the Riemann zeta function value gives the remaining integral as . Hence with the coefficient in Stefan-Boltzmann constant. The angular integral is essential: omitting it confuses radiance with radiant exitance.
Stellar activity Rossby number 2026-10-14
For a convective star, the activity convention compares its rotation period with a convective turnover time. It differs by fixed factors from the fluid Rossby number estimated from speed, length and angular velocity. Small denotes strong rotational influence on convection. Magnetic activity usually rises as this ratio decreases in the unsaturated regime, but levels off in a saturated rapid-rotation regime.
Stellar rotation-activity feedback 2026-10-14
Rotation influences convection, its helicity and differential rotation, which feed dynamo action. The generated magnetic field produces surface activity and strengthens the angular-momentum lever arm of a stellar wind. Wind braking lowers the rotation rate and ordinarily reduces unsaturated activity. Lorentz force feedback also changes the differential rotation and convective motions, saturating the dynamo on shorter time scales. Secular evolution, cyclic polarity reversal and irregular modulation are distinct time scales of this coupled system.
Subcritical magnetoconvection 2026-10-14
Subcritical magnetoconvection means finite-amplitude convection on the stable side of the linear conductive-state threshold. At large magnetic Reynolds number, flux expulsion can reduce interior magnetic inhibition enough to sustain a nonlinear convective cell even when infinitesimal disturbances decay in the unredistributed imposed field. Stable subcritical states can produce hysteresis and magnetic flux separation. A schematic saturated amplitude equation , , has an unstable lower branch and stable upper radial branch for , coexisting with stable . This illustrates bistability; it is not a derivation of coefficients for all magnetoconvection geometries.
Thermal diffusivity Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
Thermal diffusivity measures how rapidly thermal conduction smooths a temperature difference inside a material. Thermal conductivity measures the heat flux driven by a specified temperature gradient; thermal diffusivity also accounts for the heat capacity that must be warmed. A material can carry substantial heat yet change temperature slowly because it stores substantial internal energy per kelvin.
Write for thermal diffusivity, reserving for thermal conductivity. In a homogeneous isotropic material,Here is mass density, is specific heat capacity for the relevant mechanical constraint, and is volumetric heat capacity. The familiar uses specific heat capacity at constant pressure. For ordinary solids with negligible thermal expansion, the difference between the two constrained specific heat capacities is often neglected. A rigid fixed-volume model instead uses specific heat capacity at constant volume; a compressible moving fluid requires the accompanying work and transport terms. Thus the constraint is part of the approximation, not a choice made solely from the units. [ref]
Light and Laser Flash Analyzers by NETZSCH Analyzing and Testing. NETZSCH, Principle of the LFA Method: conductivity equals diffusivity times specific heat capacity times density
Assume a stationary material in the continuum approximation, local thermal equilibration on times shorter than those resolved, no internal heating, no phase transition, and negligible convection and mechanical work. Combining conservation of energy with Fourier's law gives the one-dimensional balanceIf are constant over the region and temperature excursion, this becomes the heat equation . If varies, retain the differentiated product; replacing it with loses a term. Anisotropic materials need a thermal conductivity tensor. The scalar constant- examples below deliberately exclude these complications. [ref]
Rear-surface integral method for calculating thermal diffusivity from laser flash experiments by Elliot J. Carr. Carr, section 1: homogeneous isotropic constant-property assumptions; section 2, equations (1)–(3): insulated one-dimensional heat equation
For an original comparison, stipulate two model materials with equal thermal conductivity and equal mass density , but specific heat capacities and . ThenAt the same temperature gradient, both have the same instantaneous heat flux by Fourier's law. At the same initial temperature profile and boundary conditions, material B takes four times as long to smooth a given spatial pattern. With fixed end temperatures, identical geometry and no sources, both eventually have the same steady profile and heat flux. The larger heat capacity changes the transient, not this steady state. These are stipulated parameters, not measurements of named substances.
Thermal insulation Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-10-25
thermal insulation reduces unwanted heat exchange. Conduction through supports, convection in gas and thermal radiation require different treatments. vacuum suppresses gas transport but leaves solid conduction and radiation; lowering thermal conductance also increases the temperature rise caused by a fixed internal heat load.
