Quasi-steady Stokes approximation Created 2026-10-25 Updated 2026-10-31
Neglecting both convective acceleration and local acceleration in the Navier-Stokes equation requires a small Reynolds number and an imposed evolution time long compared with the viscous diffusion time . A slowly changing configuration may then be modeled by a sequence of steady Stokes flows. Rapid small-amplitude forcing can have small Reynolds number while requiring the Unsteady Stokes equation instead.
Radial viscous flow in a wedge 2026-10-31
A steady two-dimensional purely radial incompressible Newtonian fluid flow has by the continuity equation. The polar Navier-Stokes equation givesEquality of the mixed pressure derivatives yields the displayed third-order equation. On fixed walls , no-slip boundary conditions require . A source with volume flux per unit out-of-plane length requires . Consequently leaves the single inertial parameter in . The origin is a source singularity; the radial ansatz describes the wedge away from that point, not the detailed source apparatus.
Rarefied gas flow approximations 2026-10-14
For , frequent gas–gas collisions can establish a local Maxwellian before macroscopic conditions change appreciably. Under this additional near-equilibrium assumption, the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation motivates a continuum approximation with Navier-Stokes equations and heat conduction. A no-slip boundary condition is a leading wall approximation, not a statement about individual molecular velocities.
With a small but finite Knudsen number, a useful slip approximation retains continuum bulk equations and corrects wall velocity and temperature. A Navier slip boundary condition can represent the leading tangential velocity correction, but its slip length must come from the relevant gas–wall interaction model. A nearby Knudsen layer still requires kinetic treatment if its detailed structure is wanted. Slip corrections are perturbations; extending them into order-one Knudsen numbers has no general accuracy guarantee. At order-one Knudsen number, wall and intermolecular collisions both matter; this transitional situation calls for a kinetic theory model. At , free molecular flow becomes a useful limiting approximation. These are scale comparisons, with accuracy depending on geometry, flow conditions and the observable, rather than universal sharp numerical boundaries. [ref]

Rectangular duct flow 2026-10-25
Rectangular duct flow is steady flow of a Newtonian fluid down a straight rectangular pipe under a constant axial pressure gradient . For stationary walls and unidirectional flow, incompressibility eliminates axial dependence and the Navier-Stokes equation becomes a two-dimensional Poisson equation with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions. Subtracting a plane Poiseuille flow profile leaves a harmonic function that repairs the side-wall values using separation of variables. Uniqueness follows from Green's first identity: the difference of two solutions has zero boundary values and zero integral of the squared gradient, and hence vanishes.
Reynolds-averaged momentum equation 2026-10-14
An Eulerian time average of an incompressible constant-density Navier-Stokes equation gives the displayed mean momentum equation. Decompose velocity into its mean and a zero-mean fluctuation. In conservative form, the averaged momentum flux is ; mean incompressibility then turns its first term into mean advection. The fluctuation covariance is the Reynolds stress divided by density, using the positive covariance convention. Closing this extra unknown requires a turbulence model.
Reynolds number Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
The Reynolds number compares inertial and viscous effects. Here is a characteristic velocity, a characteristic length, the dynamic viscosity, the mass density, and the kinematic viscosity. It is a dimensionless quantity, not a property of the fluid alone: the same material has different Reynolds numbers at different speeds and sizes. Specify the chosen scales when reporting it.
The comparison comes from the Navier-Stokes equation. For velocity variations on scale , convective acceleration is of order , while the viscous term is of order . Their ratio is . Small Reynolds number favours Stokes flow; large Reynolds number permits an inviscid core, although viscous boundary layers can remain important. Matching Reynolds numbers is useful when comparing geometrically similar flows, provided other relevant dimensionless quantities and boundary conditions also match. [ref]

In the constriction example under incompressible flow, use the mean axial velocity and pipe diameter, . Taking and a stipulated dynamic viscosity givesHalving the radius at fixed volumetric flow rate doubles this diameter-based Reynolds number, because mean velocity increases fourfold. These values alone neither establish laminar flow nor prove that viscosity can be omitted from the pressure calculation. Increasing to with the same imposed flow gives and , but strengthens viscous effects; small Reynolds number does not justify Bernoulli's principle.
The name recalls Osborne Reynolds's 1883 experimental investigation of water motion and resistance in pipes. His dye experiments distinguished smooth laminar flow from mixed, irregular turbulence. [ref]

Spectral triad interaction 2026-10-14
The quadratic nonlinear term of the Navier-Stokes equation couples three Fourier modes whose wave vectors close to a triangle. These spectral triad interactions transfer kinetic energy between wave numbers. A turbulence closure can model their triple correlations while retaining more scale information than a prescribed local power law.
Stokes equation Created 2026-09-28 Updated 2026-10-14
For a steady incompressible flow of a Newtonian fluid with constant density and constant dynamic viscosity , neglecting inertia in the Navier-Stokes equation givesThe first equation is local force balance; the second is mass conservation. The term is the divergence of the viscous part of the Newtonian fluid stress tensor. The body force has units of force per unit volume, , and equals for uniform gravity. Appropriate boundary data for velocity or traction, together with suitable distant conditions for an exterior flow, complete the problem; a rigid surface normally imposes the no-slip boundary condition.
With uniform gravity, write where the hydrostatic pressure satisfies . Then the disturbance equation is . This removes gravity from the fluid disturbance equation, while the hydrostatic pressure still supplies buoyancy on an immersed body. Omitting it from the total force balance would give the wrong Stokes settling velocity.
Stokes' paradox 2026-10-31
The unbounded two-dimensional Stokes flow past a no-slip circular cylinder has no solution approaching a nonzero uniform stream. With radius and speed scaled to one, the forced angular mode has stream function . The biharmonic equation gives . Uniform flow at infinity forces , ; impermeability forces , but then violates no slip. The failure belongs to a nonuniform small-Reynolds number limit. In a distant outer region inertia must be retained through an Oseen approximation or the full Navier-Stokes equations, matched to an inner Stokes region. A finite outer wall changes the problem and removes this particular infinity obstruction.
Unidirectional flow Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-31
A unidirectional flow has velocity parallel to a single fixed direction, for example . If the speed is independent of the coordinate along that direction, the convective acceleration vanishes. The steady Navier-Stokes equation then reduces to a linear balance of the pressure gradient and viscosity, as in Couette flow and Poiseuille flow.
Viscous layer model of frazil-pancake ice 2026-10-14
Represent disconnected frazil ice and pancake ice as an upper layer with effective density, thickness and viscosity, rather than a continuous elastic plate. Linear Navier-Stokes equations in that layer are coupled to underlying water through velocity and stress conditions. A complex wavenumber describes both dispersion and wave attenuation in sea ice. A simpler conservative limit keeps ice mass loading but removes the elastic bending term; it does not predict viscous attenuation. The suspension model's effective viscosity is a fitted property, and a compact pancake cover need not behave like dilute frazil.
