Assuming that the two listed leptonic decay categories exhaust the leptonic modes, the inclusive hadronic branching fraction is . Thus
At the simplest massless quark level, the W boson couples to and in three color charge states, so equal quark and lepton weak coupling constant values predict
This is a rough check of color multiplicity in a decay width and universal weak-current normalization. It is much less precise than the two-lepton ratio because hadronic quantum chromodynamics and electroweak interaction corrections are sizeable: the data require a net correction factor near . They must be included before extracting a quark-to-lepton coupling constant ratio. It would be incorrect to interpret the excess over three directly as a failure of weak universality. The displayed exclusive hadronic modes alone would underestimate the inclusive sum.
Initial-state radiation of gluons gives the W boson nonzero transverse momentum. Its transverse Lorentz boost then changes the charged-lepton , washing out the sharp edge and permitting events above it. The recoil must be modelled with quantum chromodynamics and constrained by measured hadronic activity. Independently, the finite W boson decay width spreads its actual invariant mass, also smearing the fixed-mass endpoint. Either is a theoretical broadening mechanism; neither is a detector-resolution effect.
Choose . Important backgrounds include quantum chromodynamics production of heavy-flavour hadrons with semileptonic decays, in-flight pion or kaon decays, and hadrons penetrating the calorimeters. These generally have accompanying jet activity; semileptonic decays can contain real neutrinos, while jet mismeasurement can fake missing transverse momentum. Heavy-flavour tracks can originate at a displaced decay vertex. Require a high- isolated muon, agreement between inner tracking and the external muon system, and substantial missing transverse momentum inconsistent with detector noise or a mismeasured jet.
The genuine electroweak backgrounds include with one muon lost and . Veto a second reconstructed opposite-sign muon and use the dimuon invariant mass when both are present to reject the Z boson channel. The tau-mediated spectrum is softer and contains extra missing particles; template fits and control samples estimate its residual contribution. Detector acceptance determines how much of the lost-muon background survives.
Use the leading-order parton model: scatter incoherently from an approximately on-shell collinear quark carrying nucleon momentum fraction , neglect quark and lepton masses, use an unpolarized target, and neglect nuclear binding and higher-twist corrections. The condition suppresses target-mass effects, while permits the local Fermi interaction instead of the full W propagator. CKM-weighted accessible final flavours are approximated by their leading light-quark sums. The struck-quark centre-of-mass energy is , with .
A neutrino scatters through or , and through the corresponding crossed antiquark channels such as . The chiral charged current makes the massless quark contribution independent of and the antiquark contribution proportional to . The scattering probability is weighted by the parton distribution functions; the explicit factor comes from . In the usual convention is a number probability density, while is a momentum density. Approximate Bjorken scaling leaves mainly dependence; QCD evolution adds a logarithmic dependence.
The printed proton-density formula is not an isoscalar formula in the standard PDF convention. For a proton, neglecting incoming charm and taking accessible CKM sums as unity, the conventional leading-order result is
For an isoscalar target per nucleon, average proton and neutron and use charge symmetry of nucleon parton distributions: , , . This gives
The standard normalization follows equivalently by inserting and into the charged-current structure-function formula.[ref]
A concrete discrepancy remains even with a simple valence model: take , and all sea densities zero. The correctly averaged isoscalar bracket is , while the printed bracket is only with the same prefactor. Thus the intended helicity and dependence can be explained, but the literal printed isoscalar claim cannot be derived. If the symbols were instead defined as momentum densities, the extra explicit would also need removal.
For a valence-dominated isoscalar target, . A left-chiral incident neutrino has unsuppressed scattering on a left-chiral quark and the weight for a right-chiral quark. Summing the up and down contributions yields
where and . The common normalization here uses the conventional Fermi coupling and PDFs in a; the requested shape is independent of an overall normalization convention.
Put . With , , and ,
so
Fit the relative constant and components to determine their coupling ratio, or use the NC-to-CC cross-section ratio to constrain the absolute combination. In this valence limit, integrating over gives
The same valence momentum integral cancels between numerator and denominator. Experimentally, NC events have hadronic activity without the charged-current outgoing muon; known fluxes or CC normalization, muon identification and acceptance corrections are needed. Sea-quark contributions, charm thresholds, QCD corrections and departures from isoscalarity must be included for a precision weak-mixing-angle measurement.
The neutron has valence content and total spin ; its ground-state parity is positive. The two down quarks contribute charge and the up quark contributes , giving net charge zero. “Three valence quarks” specifies the net flavor quantum numbers, rather than excluding gluons or additional sea quark–antiquark components from the full quantum chromodynamics state.
In the approximate light-flavor SU(3) classification, the neutron belongs to the ground-state baryon octet, containing eight hadrons:
These are eight particle species, without counting their antiparticles again as extra members of the same octet. The corresponding antibaryons form the conjugate particle set. Within the smaller SU(2) isospin classification, the neutron instead belongs to the two-member nucleon doublet . Stating the symmetry distinguishes the usual eight-member flavor multiplet answer from the also valid two-member isospin multiplet. The baryon decuplet has different ground-state spin and is not the neutron's octet.
Adding the three characteristic quark energies from b gives
The estimate recovers a sub-GeV scale but underestimates the stated neutron mass by a factor of a few. This is consistent with its deliberately crude uncertainty and geometry assumptions; it is not a precision mass prediction.
A better model needs the actual spatial and momentum correlations, a confining interaction, and the energy in the quark and gluon fields. In quantum chromodynamics, hadron masses are not simply the sum of three freely moving particles with tiny masses. The supplied MeV rest-energy scale resembles a light current-quark scale; a phenomenological constituent-quark mass includes substantial dressing and is a different parameter. Color, spin correlations, relativistic dynamics and sea components all matter when defining a more realistic bound-state Hamiltonian operator or performing a lattice QCD calculation. The prescribed uniform-sphere model supplies none of those extra dynamical inputs, so its discrepancy should not be repaired by an unannounced change of the given radius or mass.
Using the measured single-flavor leptonic partial decay width as one unit,
This agrees with three leptonic channels plus six color-distinguishable quark channels in the leading massless approximation. The six quark units are two accessible up-type flavors times three color charges, with the sums of squared CKM matrix elements over down-type partners approximately unity. They are not nine generations or nine new flavors. Small mass and quantum chromodynamics radiative corrections prevent the ratio from being an exactly integer channel count.
QCD scale Created 2026-09-28 Updated 2026-11-05
The QCD scale is the renormalization-group invariant energy at which the perturbative running coupling becomes strong. It sets the characteristic scale of confinement and most hadron masses.
It is a characteristic energy scale of quantum chromodynamics.
QCD scaling violation 2026-10-25
Quantum chromodynamics makes parton distribution functions depend on resolution scale through gluon radiation and parton splitting. Thus Bjorken scaling and the linear-energy neutrino cross section are approximate leading-order patterns rather than exact laws.
Quark Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-11-05
A quark is a spin one-half fermion carrying color charge and participating in quantum chromodynamics. There are six quark flavors: up quark, down quark, strange quark, charm quark, bottom quark and top quark. Up-type flavors have electric charge and down-type flavors ; every quark has baryon number .[ref]
Confinement prevents ordinary isolated quark final states. A proton has net valence content , and a neutron ; their quark and gluon fields also contain additional fluctuations. A meson has minimal valence content consisting of one quark and one antiquark. Deep inelastic scattering tests quark structure through short-distance interactions, while hadron spectroscopy tests the allowed collective quantum states.
Sean Fleming 2026-11-05
Sean Fleming is a theoretical physicist whose work develops and applies effective field theory to quantum chromodynamics. The University of Arizona's physics profile identifies him with research on separating the disparate energy scales that occur in strong-interaction measurements.[ref]
With Christian W. Bauer, Dan Pirjol and Iain W. Stewart, he coauthored a2001 construction of a theory for energetic quarks coupled to collinear and soft gluons.[ref] His2006 overview discusses soft-collinear effective theory and applications to particular meson decays and a radiative-decay spectrum.[ref] These works connect a scale-organized field theory with quantities inferred from particle observations.
An original calculation illustrates why power counting is useful. Suppose a dimensionless observable is modeled by
For chosen values , , and , the first three displayed terms give1.19; retaining only the leading term gives1. The small parameter organizes corrections, but the coefficients still matter. At instead, the first correction is2, so a small alone would not make that correction negligible. These invented coefficients are not a fit or a prediction from Fleming's papers.
A controlled expansion therefore needs both a scale hierarchy and a specification of which contributions have been retained. Fleming's institutional research statement describes effective theories as an organizing tool for disentangling scales rather than treating a complicated measurement as a one-scale calculation.[ref]

Soft-collinear effective theory is an effective field theory of quantum chromodynamics for processes containing energetic particles moving close to lightlike directions together with lower-momentum radiation. It retains the modes needed for that hierarchy and organizes interactions by power counting. Fleming's overview describes energetic collinear particles interacting with soft quanta and applies the framework to meson-decay observables.[ref]
The geometry is clearer in light-cone coordinates. Choose the Minkowski metric with signature and define
A particle moving nearly along the positive direction has one large component , a smaller transverse momentum and a still smaller . A common light-cone power counting assignment is
Individual terms in then scale as ; they can cancel for a particle on its mass shell. Virtuality and energy are therefore different measures of scale.
For an original exact example in natural units, take , and . Then , and
The momentum is energetic and exactly lightlike in this example. Removing all energetic fields from a low-virtuality theory would discard this mode. The numerical components illustrate the stated convention and are not data from a collider.
The original2001 construction by Christian W. Bauer, Sean Fleming, Dan Pirjol and Iain W. Stewart identifies separated scales and determines effective-theory currents and coefficient evolution.[ref] Comparing calculations with the underlying theory fixes Wilson coefficients; renormalization group evolution then organizes scale dependence. The resulting effective Lagrangian is an expansion with a specified domain of validity, rather than a replacement for QCD in every kinematic regime. Precise assignments for lower-energy modes depend on which hierarchy the application requires.
Standard Model Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-11-05
The Standard Model is the quantum field theory of quarks, leptons and their strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions, organized by the gauge group . Quantum chromodynamics describes the color sector; the electroweak interaction combines the remaining gauge fields with the Higgs field.
Electroweak symmetry breaking leaves the electromagnetic unbroken. The W bosons and Z boson become massive, while the photon stays massless; Yukawa interactions generate charged-fermion masses. This structure relates scattering, decay and particle-production processes using a common set of couplings. Predictions require specifying parameters and the approximation used, not only listing the group.
The minimal renormalizable field content has massless neutrinos. Observed neutrino oscillations require masses and mixing, motivating extensions such as the Weinberg operator or additional neutrino fields. The Standard Model also does not supply a quantum description of gravity.
Strong coupling constant Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-11-05
The strong coupling constant parametrizes the strength of Quantum chromodynamics interactions. Its dependence on the renormalization scale is governed by the renormalization-group beta function. It is dimensionless in four dimensions.
Strong interaction Created 2026-09-28 Updated 2026-11-05
The strong interaction is the color interaction described by quantum chromodynamics. Quarks carry color charge, gluons mediate the interaction and also carry color themselves, and physical low-energy states organize into color-singlet hadrons.
At short distances, asymptotic freedom makes a perturbative treatment useful. At hadronic distances, confinement and strong collective dynamics require other methods. The binding of quarks into a proton and the residual interaction between nucleons in an atomic nucleus are related effects at different descriptive levels. The latter can be modeled using hadrons rather than pretending that a free gluon simply travels between two structureless nucleons. Scattering resolves the short-distance constituents, while hadron and nuclear spectra constrain their low-energy collective behavior.
Structure-function scaling versus elastic suppression Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
An ideal Bjorken scaling model has : varying at fixed Bjorken x leaves this dimensionless deep-inelastic structure function unchanged. The comparison requires extracting a deep-inelastic structure function, rather than plotting raw event counts. Quantum chromodynamics predicts departures from exact Bjorken scaling; finite hadron masses also limit the idealization.
For an original shape comparison, choose and define with . The ideal model has . To display a contrasting size-dependent suppression, define an illustrative elastic-form-factor shape with the freely chosen . Its normalized squared magnitude is
Thus , whereas . The elastic-form-factor shape is a comparison of suppression mechanisms, not an elastic differential scattering cross-section assigned to : actual elastic scattering from a proton has and . Neither curve is measured data or a fit to the SLAC-MIT experiment.
Figure 1.
Fixed-x scaling model and illustrative elastic-form-factor suppression
. Original calculated curves. The left panel compares normalized response shapes; the right checks physical outgoing electron energies at the same Bjorken x. The flat curve is an ideal Bjorken scaling model, not an assertion of exact scaling in quantum chromodynamics. Details.
The experimental interpretation required more than a flat curve. The angular dependence and small longitudinal response supported spin one-half partons, expressed at leading order by the Callan-Gross relation . Identification with fractionally charged quarks also drew on later electron, muon and neutrino comparisons. A scaling plot alone does not determine the individual electric charges of constituents.[ref]
The leading parton model formula already shows the ambiguity: combines squared electric charges with unknown parton distribution functions. One measured function cannot independently fix all these quantities. Confinement also explains why an inclusive final hadron state need not contain an isolated outgoing quark.
Tree-level W branching fractions Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
With three massless lepton families, two accessible up-type quarks, three colors, and no quantum chromodynamics radiative correction, a W boson has total decay width . With an identity CKM matrix, each leptonic channel has branching fraction and each of the two allowed quark-flavour channels has . With mixing, each accessible quark channel is weighted by , while row unitarity preserves the total at this order if all down-type channels are accessible.
Ulf-G. Meißner Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
A theoretical nuclear physicist who studies nuclear forces using effective field theory. His joint review with Evgeny Epelbaum and Hans-Werner Hammer explains how the symmetries of quantum chromodynamics constrain low-energy interactions between nucleons. The approach organizes increasingly accurate calculations without treating a nucleus directly as a collection of interacting quarks.[ref]
Up quark Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-11-05
The up quark is the first-generation up-type quark, with electric charge , spin and baryon number . It is a light quark, and the up quark and down quark together account for the net valence flavor content of ordinary nuclei.[ref]
The minimal proton content has total charge and baryon number one. The proton's mass is not simply the sum of three free-quark masses: its interacting quark and gluon fields carry most of its energy. The quark model organizes the flavor content, while quantum chromodynamics describes the dynamics needed to compute hadron properties.
