A ferromagnetic particle with no internal domain wall. Magnetization reversal can proceed by rotation or nonuniform modes; thermal activation and anisotropy determine blocking and coercivity. Small size alone does not guarantee a permanent hard magnet.
What separates a hydration shell from the surrounding water experimentally? Electrical conductivity addresses a different question. The documented lamp demonstration immerses metal electrodes in a chemical solution, rinses them between samples, and records brightness; adding sodium chloride to distilled water makes it conductive. A water blank and dissolved sucrose comparison test whether dissolved material alone explains the signal. Fixed geometry, temperature, and stated concentrations are additional proposed controls. This reveals mobile electric charge, with limits from contamination, electrode interfaces and detection threshold; it supplies no shell positions. Conductivity experiment on salt solutions explains the apparatus and controls in detail.[ref]
In the authored study Influence of ions on the hydrogen-bond structure in liquid water by Anne Willem Omta and others, pump-probe spectroscopy uses tunable mid-infrared pulses traversing a sample. The probe's wave polarization is set at to the pump; after the sample, splitting and polarizers select parallel and perpendicular transmission. Measuring each transmission with and without the pump gives and , the respective logarithms of the transmission ratios. Their dimensionless anisotropy is
Its decay probes reorientation rather than merely loss of vibrational excitation. Dilute semiheavy water in heavy water separates the O–H and O–D bands. Varying the semiheavy water concentration checked that transfer of excitation between nearby O–H groups did not determine the decay. These apparatus and control details are from the inspected author-uploaded article, not a new experiment.[ref]
The related thesis chapter documents two O–H absorption bands in a sodium perchlorate chemical solution: approximately for groups forming hydrogen bonds to water, and for groups forming hydrogen bonds to the anion. Selecting pump and probe bands, then a later delay window, separated their responses. The anion-associated anisotropy decayed more slowly; the water-bonded component showed no resolved change in decay time across the tested sodium perchlorate concentrations. The chapter also used O–D excitation to extend observation beyond the shorter O–H vibrational lifetime. These results support distinct local dynamics rather than a permanently fixed hydration shell. Spectral overlap, finite observation windows, and the selected salts limit the inference: this does not prove that every ion leaves all distant water properties unchanged.[ref]

Fluctuations that limit the detectable field of a magnetoresistive read sensor. Thermal magnetization noise, domain jumps, electronic thermal noise and resistance fluctuations compete with the field-dependent signal; magnetic bias and adequate anisotropy stability are important.
Wavefront Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-14
A wavefront connects points with the same wave phase at one specified time. It is a surface, rather than the trajectory of a particular piece of light. For a scalar monochromatic wave written as , a wavefront is a connected level set of the phase function ; different surfaces can share the same wave phase modulo . A plane wave has planar wavefronts. An outward wave from an ideal point source in a uniform medium has spheres as wavefronts, while an optical lens can turn nearly planar wavefronts into converging ones. The wavefront describes wave phase, not wave amplitude: drawing it does not say how bright the beam is. [ref]
The relation to light rays becomes precise in a stationary medium with isotropy, negligible loss and a real positive scalar refractive index . In the geometrical optics limit, spatial changes in the refractive index and wave amplitude are slow on the local wavelength scale. For a single smooth propagation branch, write
Here is the angular frequency, is the vacuum speed of light, has units of length, and the last relation is the optical eikonal equation. The local wavevector is . Its direction is normal to a smooth wavefront, since a gradient is normal to its level sets. A forward light ray has unit tangent vector , so it follows this normal under the stated assumptions. Along that light ray, : the change in is the optical path length. This is the short geometric argument linking wavefronts, light rays and optical path length. [ref]

Wavefronts and normal light rays at an interface: an original plane wave model of refraction
. Details.
The diagram shows incident and transmitted branches separately, with the reflected branch omitted. Its stipulated refractive indices are and , and its incident angle is to the interface normal. At a stationary interface, the frequency and tangential wavevector agree on the two sides: Snell's law gives , hence . The wavefronts turn while their normal spacing decreases from to , where is the vacuum wavelength. More explicitly, with normal to the interface and tangential, take for and for . These functions agree at ; the drawn wavefronts are at with . This is an exact piecewise plane wave phase construction for the stipulated transparent media, not measured material data. [ref]
The normal-to-wavefront rule requires its assumptions. In a medium with anisotropy, the wavevector remains normal to a smooth wavefront, but the group velocity and energy flux need not follow it. [ref] Near a wave caustic, where multiple light rays meet, one smooth phase function may no longer describe the field; diffraction and the full wave amplitude matter. A wavefront is also not generally a surface of equal pulse arrival time. In a medium with optical dispersion, a monochromatic wave phase moves with the phase velocity, while a sufficiently narrow wave packet follows the group velocity. Even identical optical path lengths at one frequency can give different group delays. The usual equal-travel-time picture needs a common launch reference and a nondispersive ray model; an arbitrary broadband disturbance has no single monochromatic wavefront.[ref]
