The commutator action of is diagonalizable on endomorphisms: on it acts by . The action of is nilpotent by nilpotence of commutation by a nilpotent endomorphism. The two actions commute, so uniqueness of the Additive Jordan decomposition identifies them as the parts of .
Algebraic differential operator ring Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-07
For a commutative algebra over , put and define to be the -linear endomorphisms with for every multiplication map . The union is a ring under composition, with and . This commutator definition applies to singular rings and fields of arbitrary characteristic, unlike a definition restricted to polynomial coefficients and partial derivatives.
Automorphism Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
An automorphism is an isomorphism : a structure-preserving self-map that can be undone by another structure-preserving self-map. Equivalently, it is an invertible endomorphism. Its inverse satisfieswhere is the identity morphism. Both maps must be morphisms in the chosen category. For ordinary groups, rings, and vector spaces over a fixed field, a bijective morphism automatically has a compatible inverse. For topological spaces, an automorphism is a homeomorphism from the space to itself: a continuous bijection needs a continuous inverse as well. See Riehl, Category Theory in Context, Definition 1.1.10 and Example 1.1.11.
For example, is an automorphism of the vector space over the real numbers, with inverse . Both are linear maps. The linear endomorphism from endomorphism preserves addition and scalar multiplication too, but discards a coordinate and cannot be undone. Preserving the structure and preserving enough information for reversal are separate requirements.
The automorphisms of a fixed object in a locally small category form a group under composition in a category: the identity morphism is the identity element, and the inverse element of a composite reverses the order of its factors. This makes reversible internal changes calculable. For a group, the resulting automorphism group records which relabelings preserve all products; the examples in group automorphism show how restrictive that condition can be.
Chern curvature Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
The vector-bundle curvature of the unique metric-compatible holomorphic Chern connection is an endomorphism-valued form of type . It is Dolbeault closed and represents the curvature Dolbeault class. Its trace gives normalized first-Chern forms, while its full endomorphism action enters the Lefschetz-Dolbeault curvature commutator.
CM elliptic curve 2026-10-14
An elliptic curve with complex multiplication is called a CM elliptic curve. Distinguish geometric endomorphisms from endomorphisms defined over the base field. In characteristic zero, adjoining the imaginary quadratic field selected by the tangent action makes all geometric endomorphisms defined over the base. Good split primes have ordinary reduction; good inert primes have supersingular reduction.
CM Tate module stabilizer 2026-10-14
Let . If maps the Tate module into , it kills and factors through the quotient isogeny . The resulting endomorphism is , belongs to and is defined over , hence belongs to . Approximation in now identifies the displayed stabilizer. This does not assume that the integral Tate module is free over a possibly nonmaximal CM order.
Composition of mixed tensors 2026-10-06
A type- tensor identifies with an endomorphism of a finite-dimensional vector space. Composing two such maps produces another type- tensor, because is a multilinear map. In output-first components the result is ; the contracted index implements composition, and a basis change conjugates the corresponding matrices.
Conjugation averaging on a compact group 2026-10-14
Normalized Haar measure makes this averaging a norm-one projection onto continuous class functions. Averaging a trace coefficient replaces its coefficient endomorphism by . On an irreducible summand this average is by Schur lemma. It follows that averaging finite-dimensional matrix coefficients yields finite linear combinations of irreducible characters. Together with the Peter-Weyl theorem, this proves uniform density of those characters among continuous class functions.
Direct summand Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-07
A submodule of a module is a direct summand if some submodule gives . Equivalently, the inclusion has a left inverse R-module homomorphism, or is the image of an idempotent endomorphism of .
Endomorphism Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
An endomorphism is a morphism : its source and target are the same object, with the same specified structure. For a group it is an operation-preserving group homomorphism back into that group; for a vector space it is a linear endomorphism; for a ring it is a ring endomorphism. A self-map must satisfy the chosen compatibility conditions to qualify. The notation records the category in which these conditions are imposed. See Riehl, Category Theory in Context, Definition 1.1.10 and the following paragraph.
An endomorphism can lose information or miss part of its target. On the additive integers, preserves addition and is injective, but is not surjective: no integer maps to . On the vector space over the real numbers, the linear endomorphism loses the second coordinate, so it is neither injective nor surjective. Neither is an automorphism. The same doubling rule becomes a group isomorphism when its target is the additive even integers, as explained under isomorphism.
The finite cyclic group offers a small example of information loss that can be drawn completely. With addition in modular arithmetic, the endomorphism sends the inputs to . Its image of a group homomorphism is and its kernel of a group homomorphism is . Each reached output has two inputs; the other three outputs are missed.
For an endomorphism of a group or ring with a finite underlying set, injectivity is equivalent to surjectivity by counting; either condition makes it an automorphism. The additive integers example shows why the finiteness assumption matters. A linear endomorphism of a finite-dimensional vector space also has equivalent injectivity and surjectivity, this time by the rank-nullity theorem even when its underlying set is infinite.
Self-maps can be iterated without changing the object: , , and so on. Composition in a category and the identity morphism make the endomorphisms of a fixed object in a locally small category into a monoid. This packages repeated compatible operations, including irreversible ones, into a single structure.
The general language has a documented historical milestone in the 1945 paper of Samuel Eilenberg and Saunders Mac Lane. They defined categories of objects and compatible maps, and distinguished maps admitting inverses within that category. Their examples included groups, vector spaces, and topological spaces. This gave a common framework for compatible self-maps and their invertible cases. See Eilenberg and Mac Lane, General Theory of Natural Equivalences, pp. 234 and 237–239.
Endomorphism bundle 2026-10-14
The vector bundle whose fibre at consists of linear maps . If a local frame changes by , the coefficient matrix of an endomorphism changes by , giving smooth fibre-linear transitions. For a line bundle this bundle is canonically the trivial scalar bundle, because every fibre endomorphism is scalar multiplication. A connection on a vector bundle induces the endomorphism bundle connection.
Endomorphism-induced tensor derivation 2026-10-05
A smooth endomorphism of the tangent bundle defines the tensor derivation by and . On a differential one-form, . On a general tensor field, it acts by in each vector factor and by the negative dual action in each covector factor. The two actions cancel in each contracted pairing, proving compatibility with tensor contraction.
