Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-18
The Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix compares the left-handed unitary matrices that diagonalize the up-type and down-type Yukawa matrices. Its rows label up quarks, charm quarks and top quarks; its columns label down quarks, strange quarks and bottom quarks. In the weak charged current, the coefficient of is . A single CKM matrix therefore connects quark masses, flavour-changing decay amplitudes, and CP violation.
Write and . An exactly unitary matrix with three mixing angles and one CP-violating phase isThis convention agrees with Makoto Kobayashi's account of three-generation quark mixing.[ref]

The Christenson-Cronin-Fitch-Turlay kaon CP violation experiment established the phenomenon that required an explanation. Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Maskawa showed that two-generation quark mixing cannot supply it, whereas adding a third quark generation permits an irreducible weak phase. Their 1973 paper also considered additional fields as alternative mechanisms; the three-generation conclusion concerns CP violation from the minimal unitary quark mixing mechanism.[ref]

A common weak phase makes CP violation across mesons testable through the BABAR time-dependent CP violation experiment. It does not explain the cosmic baryon asymmetry.[ref]

Electromagnetic production and decay of vector quarkonium Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-25
Single-photon electron-positron annihilation can directly form quarkonium with . A vector S-wave quarkonium can annihilate back through a virtual photon into a charged-lepton pair. At leading nonrelativistic order, its electronic partial decay width is proportional to , where the wavefunction at the origin describes the quark-antiquark annihilation overlap.
Below the threshold for a pair of heavy-light mesons, hadronic decays require annihilation, primarily into three gluons for a color-singlet state. One gluon cannot carry a color-singlet initial state, and two gluons have the wrong charge-conjugation parity. Above the heavy-light pair threshold, a strong interaction can instead separate the heavy quark and antiquark into different mesons after creating a light pair. This can greatly increase the total decay width without comparably changing the short-distance electronic partial width. A specific example is the contrast between the first three Upsilon mesons and the state. Higher radial states can additionally undergo hadronic or radiative transitions to lower quarkonium states.
Four-flavour meson multiplet 2026-10-25
Four quark flavours in the defining representation of flavour SU(4) and their antiquarks give sixteen meson flavour states. The trace of is the trivial representation; its traceless part is the Adjoint representation. Under light-flavour SU(3), the full content is . Relative to the light-flavour nonet, the new states are . Inside the traceless fifteen-dimensional multiplet the additional singlet is instead . The pure state is a linear combination of this state and the full SU(4) singlet. The classification concerns flavour; it does not imply degenerate physical masses or fix spin.
Gell-Mann and Zweig quark models 2026-10-18
In his 1964 paper, Murray Gell-Mann proposed fractional-charge quarks, constructing baryons and mesons from them. He also distinguished a mathematical constituent model from the hypothesis of finite-mass physical particles. The successful bookkeeping did not itself settle that distinction.[ref]

George Zweig's 1964 CERN model used three constituents called aces, with fractional electric charge and baryon number . Its abstract also proposed an experimental search.[ref]

The theoretical construction and the experiment that might discriminate between interpretations are separate parts of the argument. The Alternating Gradient Synchrotron delivered protons onto beryllium. Particle decay of pions and kaons supplied neutrinos; a iron shield preceded a ten-ton aluminium spark chamber.[ref]

Beam-timed coincidence circuits and veto counters rejected entering tracks. Machine-off runs measured cosmic ray contamination; shield-thickness changes tested neutrons. The paper compared single-muon candidates, including estimated cosmic ray events, with six shower candidates unlike calibrated electron showers. Kaon decays could supply genuine electron neutrinos. The deficit favored distinct neutrino flavours under lepton universality.[ref]
The inference concerns production and detection channels. It does not measure neutrino mass or establish permanently fixed neutrino flavour. Later neutrino oscillation experiments address changes during propagation.[ref]
Light pentaquark strong-decay channels 2026-10-06
Exotic flavour weights can decay into a baryon and a meson while preserving every strong quantum number: or , , and . These are quark rearrangements. If above threshold with unsuppressed couplings, such states are short-lived strong resonances. Flavour symmetry alone fixes neither masses nor widths.

Meson-baryon scattering Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-20
Scattering with one meson and one baryon in the initial and final states. The strong interaction conserves electric charge, baryon number, net strangeness, four-momentum, total angular momentum, and parity. Approximate isospin symmetry imposes additional relations among charge-channel amplitudes.
Meson doublets with one isospin-singlet quark Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-18
An isospin-zero quark paired with or gives a meson isospin doublet of charges . Spin addition at zero orbital angular momentum gives both pseudoscalar mesons and vector mesons. Pairing the new antiquark with gives the charge-conjugate doublets. For strange or charm flavour these are the kaon or D-meson families and their vector partners.
Meson hyperfine mass splitting 2026-10-18
In a simple constituent quark model, a spin-dependent contribution splits a spin-zero and spin-one meson having the same spatial configuration. For two spin-half constituents, addition of angular momentum gives , equal to for and for . ThusThe spin-averaged mass is . Positive places the vector state above the pseudoscalar. Determining from just needs an additional assumption about ; setting it equal to neglects all other spin-independent binding terms. A splitting below the pion mass closes a one-pion strong decay to the lower meson, often making the allowed electromagnetic transition with photon emission dominant.
Meson parity and charge conjugation 2026-10-14
For an ordinary quark-antiquark meson, opposite intrinsic parities and orbital parity give . For a self-conjugate flavor state, charge conjugation exchanges the two constituents. Reversal of their relative momentum gives , spin exchange gives , and reordering the two fermionic creation operators gives one extra minus sign. Their product is . Electrical neutrality alone does not imply that a state is an eigenstate of charge conjugation; charged mesons have no individual C eigenvalue.
Naive factorization of a nonleptonic meson decay Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-25
Approximate a hadronic matrix element of a product of two currents by a product of separate current matrix elements. For a decay to two mesons, one factor can create a pion from the vacuum while the other gives a pseudoscalar-to-pseudoscalar form factor. Nonfactorizable Quantum chromodynamics interactions are omitted; tree-level weak vertices do not alone justify this approximation.

Omega meson 2026-10-14
The omega meson is an isospin-zero vector meson with charge conjugation value minus one and consequently G parity minus one. Three-pion decay is compatible with the isospin-symmetric strong interaction, whereas two-pion decay violates its G-parity rule.
Past exam of the groups and representations course of the University of Oxford 2020 4 d Solution 2026-10-25
Take the quarks in the defining of flavour SU(4) and the antiquarks in . The flavour part of a meson is a quark-antiquark pair . It transforms as , so the complete four-flavour meson multiplet isIts traceless part is the Adjoint representation , the direct four-flavour analogue of the three-flavour meson octet. The trace supplies an additional trivial representation. Thus “the mesons” can refer to the traceless multiplet or to the complete quark model tensor product; keeping both explicit avoids dropping a state.
Using solution, the SU(3) representation contents areDirectly, the upper-left block with is the old ; the three entries form , the three entries form , and is another singlet. The dimensions are . This is a classification by flavour symmetry, rather than colour or spin. The much larger charm quark mass breaks the flavour SU(4) approximation strongly; it does not change this representation counting.
