Weak charged current interactions of muon neutrinos usually give extended muon tracks. Compact particle showers occur in other channels, including weak neutral current interactions of every neutrino flavor. Tracks generally constrain direction better; escaping particles complicate energy inference.[ref]

The Alternating Gradient Synchrotron delivered protons onto beryllium. Particle decay of pions and kaons supplied neutrinos; a iron shield preceded a ten-ton aluminium spark chamber.[ref]
Production and detection are separate. In modern neutrino flavour notation,
Shielding suppresses the daughter muon; a newly produced muon inside the spark chamber's aluminium marks an interaction.[ref]
Figure 1. . Original functional schematic, not a scale reconstruction. Only a rare interaction is drawn; most neutrinos traverse the detector. The lower patterns explain classification, rather than reproducing photographs. Details.
Beam-timed coincidence circuits and veto counters rejected entering tracks. Machine-off runs measured cosmic ray contamination; shield-thickness changes tested neutrons. Placing lead near the target shortened the meson decay path and reduced events. Cosmotron electron calibration established particle shower recognition.[ref]
The paper compared single-muon candidates, including estimated cosmic ray events, with six shower candidates unlike calibrated electron showers. Kaon decays could supply genuine electron neutrinos. The deficit favored distinct neutrino flavours under lepton universality.[ref]
The inference concerns production and detection channels. It does not measure neutrino mass or establish permanently fixed neutrino flavour. Later neutrino oscillation experiments address changes during propagation.[ref]
MINOS 2026-10-25
A long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment using a Fermilab beam, near and far detectors, and magnetized iron/scintillator sampling calorimeters. A charged current muon neutrino event gives a negative muon and a hadronic shower; their reconstructed energies estimate the incident neutrino energy.
Muon antineutrino Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
The antineutrino associated with the muon flavour of the weak charged current has zero electric charge and lepton number in the usual production-and-detection description. A negative muon decays to an electron, an electron antineutrino and a muon neutrino; the charge-conjugate process instead produces the muon antineutrino.
Muon capture 2026-10-20
A bound negative muon can be absorbed by a nucleus through the weak charged current, changing a proton into a neutron and emitting a muon neutrino. This competes with ordinary muon decay and changes the observable disappearance lifetime in a muonic atom.
Muon-neutrino electron recoil spectrum Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
For an especially simple neutral current example, scatter a muon neutrino elastically from an initially stationary unpolarized electron:
Here is the final electron kinetic energy, is the incident neutrino energy, and is the Weinberg angle. These are electron chiral couplings in the vertex convention of neutral-current vector and axial couplings. The chosen muon neutrino elastic channel has no additional W boson exchange amplitude; the electron-neutrino elastic channel would have one. Other charged-current final states can become kinematically accessible at sufficiently high incident energies and are not part of this elastic model.
Use natural units , retain only tree-level Feynman diagrams, and take the contact limit with . Neglect electron-mass terms relative to , radiative corrections and detector response. Then
is the Fermi constant. The approximate endpoint replaces the exact elastic endpoint . The omitted leading mass-dependent interference term in is . Thus the approximation is not appropriate for arbitrarily soft neutrinos.
The shape follows from the two chiral contributions to the massless scattering amplitude. The spin sum gives terms proportional to and in Mandelstam variables; in this limit , giving the square . The two electron chiralities do not interfere when the relevant mass corrections are dropped. Replacing the neutrino by its antineutrino exchanges which coupling multiplies each kinematic term. This is the same chiral angular weighting that appears in neutrino scattering on an antiquark, now with a target whose couplings are particularly simple.
Integrating the two elementary terms gives
For an original teaching example choose , so and . This is a stipulated parameter, not a measurement of the Weinberg angle. Then
The normalized probability density function is , not the unnormalized differential cross section. Its endpoints have ratio two, and the fraction with is . The antineutrino spectrum happens to coincide at this chosen parameter because ; this equality is not a general prediction for arbitrary Weinberg angles.

. Original tree-level curves divided by . The left panel chooses ; the right compares three stipulated values in . All omit finite electron-mass corrections and radiative corrections; none is historical data or a fitted mixing angle. Details.
Unlike a visible electron recoil, the scattered neutrino is unrecorded. A measured recoil spectrum must therefore be compared with incident neutrino flux, energy distribution, acceptance, detection efficiency and backgrounds. A shape or rate tests a specified theoretical model only after these experimental ingredients have been supplied.
Neutral current Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-20
The weak neutral current couples the Z boson to a fermion without changing its electric charge. Its vector and axial-vector coefficients depend on weak isospin, electric charge, and the weak mixing angle.
The neutral current transfers no electric charge at a fermion vertex; “neutral” does not mean that every participating particle is uncharged. For example, transfers energy and momentum to an electron through Z boson exchange. By contrast, a charged current can convert a muon neutrino into a muon, as in . Both processes conserve total electric charge. A photon also carries no electric charge, but an active neutrino has no electromagnetic charge coupling: its neutral current is a distinct weak interaction.
The experimentally useful contrast on a nucleon target is
where is a nucleon and is an allowed final state of hadrons. The charged current makes a charged lepton available for identification; the outgoing neutrino in a neutral current leaves no bubble-chamber track. A sample of hadronic events without an identified muon therefore poses an experimental question: how many could instead be neutron interactions, or charged current events whose muon was missed? The answer requires a detector-response and background analysis, not merely an inspection for an absent line.

OPERA experiment 2026-10-25
A long-baseline tau-appearance experiment with the CERN-to-Gran-Sasso muon neutrino beam. Lead targets and nuclear emulsion resolve a short tau lepton decay after a tau neutrino charged current interaction.
Allowed through a virtual W boson. The charm quark emits a and becomes a down quark through the nonzero CKM matrix element . The virtual W boson produces a positive muon and a muon neutrino through the leptonic weak charged current. The right panel is the unique physical-particle tree-level Feynman diagram.
Its total electric charge is , equal to the initial charge, and its final lepton number is . The decay is Cabibbo suppressed, rather than forbidden. These diagram counts use unitary gauge: in covariant gauges charged unphysical Goldstone bosons can supply gauge-dependent pieces of the same physical amplitudes, not additional physical channels.
The negative muon emits a virtual and becomes a muon neutrino; the boson creates an electron and an electron antineutrino:
Both vertices are weak charged currents.

Typical transfers satisfy , so the propagator factor expands as plus small corrections. Contracting this short-distance exchange produces the local Fermi interaction, with strength contained in . This effective description does not assume that the real W mass vanishes. The same treatment applies to leptonic tau decays with the relevant masses changed.[ref]
In GeV units, and . Thus
The modest difference from a precision experimental lifetime is expected from the rounded mass and omitted radiative and final-electron-mass corrections.
Strike a target with high-energy protons, collect negative pions and kaons with magnetic horns, and let them decay in a long evacuated decay tunnel: and . Absorb residual hadrons and range out muons in shielding. Focusing selects the negative parent sign and therefore enriches muon antineutrinos; other parent decays leave a finite contamination. Monitor the parent flux and use a near detector to constrain the unoscillated spectrum.
A massive segmented calorimeter supplies interaction probability and measures the hadronic shower. Alternate dense absorber plates with scintillation counters or tracking planes, and magnetize the iron or add a downstream magnetic muon detector. The signal is a positive muon plus a hadronic shower; the sign rejects much of the muon neutrino contamination. For a contained muon, its range gives energy; for a penetrating track, curvature gives . Multiple measurements and a field map determine the fitted momentum and sign. Summed calibrated shower response estimates the struck quark's visible hadronization energy, not the energy of a free observable quark. Correct for invisible nuclear losses, noncompensating response, leakage and acceptance. Neglecting target recoil corrections, and .
The Fermilab primary proton beam strikes a target, producing secondary pions and kaons. Horn focusing selects positive parents; their decays and produce a predominantly muon neutrino beam. A decay tunnel permits decay before the remaining charged secondaries encounter an absorber. A near detector constrains the flux and interaction spectrum, while the distant MINOS detector measures its change.
The alternating scintillation counters and magnetized iron give a sampling calorimeter and a magnetic tracking volume. A charged current event has a long negative muon track and a localized hadronic shower. Estimate by range if contained or magnetic curvature if exiting, and by the calibrated scintillator pulse-height sum. Reconstruct , with corrections for nuclear binding, invisible energy and detector response. The muon charge separates most wrong-sign muon antineutrino events; short showers without the track are primarily neutral current candidates. The source's baseline is used in the calculations below.
TODO: a numerical estimate from the missing MINOS spectrum cannot be supplied. On source page 7 the graph is absent: PDF Form /Im3 invokes undefined image /Im1 with no image resources, and the archived bundle has the same defect. In particular, no measured minimum energy survives. For maximal mixing angle, the first minimum of muon neutrino survival obeys
A restored spectrum or fitted data are needed to choose . This is a relation for the survival minimum; a minimum in the raw event spectrum also depends on flux, cross section and smearing. For context only, accelerator and atmospheric results put the splitting at a few , versus the solar splitting about , roughly thirty times smaller. This known scale is not a reconstruction of the absent graph. [ref]
Finite event statistics, hadronic shower energy resolution, the muon scale, near-to-far flux extrapolation, interaction and nuclear modeling, backgrounds and detector calibration limit the precision; the baseline itself is comparatively well known. In a two-flavour vacuum fit the sign of is inaccessible. Evidence for dominant includes the zenith-angle-dependent atmospheric deficit in Super-Kamiokande, approximately preserved active neutral current rates, small electron-flavour appearance at this scale, atmospheric tau appearance and direct tau appearance in OPERA. The latter had already reported four candidates and evidence in 2014; a later five-candidate discovery result is not needed for this June 2015 answer. [ref] These tests constrain a dominant sterile conversion as well as conversion into electron neutrinos.
In a dense beam dump, long-lived pions and kaons usually interact and lose energy before decaying. Their residual stopped decays yield low-energy neutrinos, below the useful high-energy tau-interaction sample. Prompt charmed mesons have much shorter lifetimes and can decay before reinteraction. This suppresses the conventional muon neutrino background relative to the prompt component. The production sequence is Quantum chromodynamics creation of , principally with also allowed, followed by hadronization and its charge conjugate. The process includes both quark-exchange diagrams and the three-gluon diagram. Fragmentation also produces other hadrons; the proton does not turn directly into one isolated Ds meson.
The charge-conjugate chain gives a prompt tau antineutrino and a secondary tau neutrino. Thus each leptonic Ds meson chain produces both tau-flavour signs. The corresponding Feynman diagrams are shown in a.
For the CKM matrix, diagonalizing the up/down quark mass matrices by leaves in the charged current:
The three-generation unitary matrix has three physical mixing angles and one CP violation phase after field rephasings. At fixed kinematics and hadronic matrix element, rates are proportional to ; phase space, parent lifetimes, form factors and helicity suppression must also be included when comparing branching fractions.
For a charged pseudoscalar meson , leptonic pseudoscalar decay width gives
The Ds meson channel is Cabibbo-favoured, , whereas the charged D meson channel uses . Taking , and in GeV gives
Including the approximate lifetime ratio and the given production ratio gives a tau yield ratio about , already much greater than one even with equal decay constants. This is an illustrative estimate using approximate additional mass/lifetime inputs, not a determination from the production cross sections alone. A neutral D meson cannot annihilate to the charged pair by electric charge conservation; its semileptonic tau modes have insufficient phase space once the required strange or nonstrange recoil hadron is included. Light mesons are below threshold; bottom production is much smaller at this fixed-target energy. Consequently neither the larger production rate nor ordinary light-hadron production outweighs the Ds meson tau source. [ref]
For this dump scheme, there is no practical parent-sign or lifetime selection that isolates only the relatively rare Ds meson tau channel: other charmed hadrons promptly produce electron neutrinos and muon neutrinos by semileptonic decay. Both electron and muon modes have the same charged current couplings and similar available phase space, so comparable and fluxes are plausible. The tau lepton also decays into electron and muon channels. A rare tau-producing channel cannot remove the abundant prompt backgrounds, and its two-step chain emits both tau-flavour signs.
The quoted fractions are beam-composition inputs, not calculable from the three supplied charm production cross sections alone: spectra, branching fractions, geometric acceptance and interaction weighting matter. Impossibility of a pure tau source is a practical statement about this production method, not a fundamental prohibition on selecting tau flavour at an oscillation maximum.
Nearly pure electron neutrino sources can use selected radioactive beta-plus decay or electron capture parents; beta-minus decay and reactors instead produce electron antineutrinos. A boosted radioactive-ion beam gives directional electron-flavour flux. Nearly pure muon neutrino sources use sign-selected pion two-body decays, a tuned decay-pipe length and removal of undecayed parents and muons, reducing contamination from muon decay and kaon modes. Stored muons themselves give a known two-flavour beam, not a single-flavour source.
Cecil Frank Powell's 1950 lecture illustrates the successive decays of pions and muons through their tracks and explains why the nearly fixed secondary muon range, allowing for range straggling, supports a single neutral decay partner. He describes its identification as a neutrino tentatively. The neutral particle itself leaves no recorded track. He contrasts this decay with the nuclear reactions caused by stopped negative pions, connecting the latter with the nuclear force.[ref]
Here is a modern special relativity derivation for the dominant leptonic pion decay, assuming a free pion at rest, a massless muon neutrino, and no emitted photon. Write and for the pion and muon masses. By conservation of momentum the daughter momenta are opposite with equal magnitude . By conservation of energy and the energy–momentum relation,
Substitute , square, and cancel . This gives
The resulting is fixed, although the muon's direction is not set by the incoming stopping track. Thus the kink angle relative to that earlier track is not the angle between the two daughters: in the pion rest frame, the daughters are back to back. A neutral-partner arrow in a diagram represents inferred momentum, not an observed string of grains.
For an original calculation, adopt rounded input values and . They give , and . Their sum satisfies . These are rounded calculation inputs and outputs, not a fit to the 1947 plates.
Figure 1. . Original special relativity calculation and synthetic histograms. The dashed neutrino arrow is an inference. For illustration only, the range response has arbitrarily chosen mean and standard deviation in dimensionless units; it does not reproduce historical grain measurements, a measured resolution or a calibrated muon range. Details.
At fixed material and particle identity, a fixed initial kinetic energy suggests a narrow particle range distribution broadened by range straggling and measurement uncertainty. The synthetic example convolves a single chosen range with a normal distribution; a second example superposes two such chosen ranges. It explains why repeated comparable stopping distances can be informative, without pretending to extract a historical spectrum.
The decay equations do not identify the neutral partner as a neutrino on their own: a massless photon would satisfy the same energy and momentum equations. Nor does any isolated kink establish the pion's identity. The inference gains force from calibrated particle range, track grain density, repeated decay patterns and independent particle properties. Historical particle names should not obscure the distinction: a muon is a lepton, whereas a pion is a meson.
SNO solar-neutrino flavor experiment Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
In 2001, live days, reconstructed radius below and effective electron kinetic energy above gave a CC neutrino flux of for the assumed boron-8 spectrum. Source calibrations measured instrumental-cut signal loss. SNO's own CC–ES difference was ; comparison with Super-Kamiokande's precise ES flux gave evidence for non-electron active neutrinos. This was not an NC measurement.[ref]
In 2002 the pure-heavy water analysis used live days and a reconstructed kinetic-energy threshold. NC neutrons captured on deuterons emitted gamma rays, producing secondary electron light. The NC reaction threshold was , a different quantity. Californium-252 calibrated capture efficiency, but only detection efficiency after fiducial and energy cuts. Assays constrained backgrounds from radioactive decay and photodisintegration.[ref]
Energy, radius and direction relative to the Sun statistically separated channels. Assuming the standard boron-8 spectral shape, the NC total active neutrino flux was , consistent with stellar structure predictions. The non-electron active component differed from zero by . This established active flavour conversion, without individually tagging muon neutrinos and tau neutrinos. It did not exclude every sterile admixture.[ref]
In the modern weak charged current interpretation, one allowed assignment is
The electron antineutrino, tau neutrino, muon neutrino and antineutrino of the tau neutrino carry away energy and momentum. There are four undetected particles in this decay assignment. Interchanging which parent decays electronically gives the opposite electric charge assignment. Each parent conserves electric charge and, in this approximation, total lepton number; four-momentum conservation applies separately to production and to each particle decay.
If and denote the corresponding branching fractions, independent parent decays give an inclusive mixed-flavour fraction . The factor two counts the two assignments to opposite parent charges. For chosen , the mixed fraction is , before acceptance and detection efficiency. Correlations between the parents' spins can affect angular selection even when the fully inclusive branching fractions factorize.
The neutrinos in that equation are a physical interpretation to test. Neither a deficit in visible energy nor two unusual tracks alone establishes their identities or uniquely counts them. Even a compatible invariant mass and an angular distribution require particle identification, background checks and agreement across further particle decay channels. The direct detection milestone for the tau neutrino was in 2000, separate from the charged tau lepton discovery.
