Isometry group of a Riemannian quotient 2026-10-14
For a complete simply connected Riemannian manifold and a free properly discontinuous deck group , each isometry of lifts to an isometry of normalizing . Conversely such a normalizing isometry descends; two lifts differ by a deck transformation. This proves the formula, including orientation-reversing isometries if the full normalizer is used.
Isospectral manifolds Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-14
Two Riemannian manifolds are isospectral for a specified differential operator if their eigenvalues, counted with multiplicities and with the same boundary conditions, agree. Riemannian isometries preserve the Laplace-Beltrami operator spectrum, but the converse can fail. The transplantation theorem and the Sunada theorem give systematic constructions.
Isotropic Ricci curvature 2026-10-14
At a point of a Riemannian manifold, Ricci curvature is isotropic when is independent of nonzero tangent direction. Polarization makes this equivalent to the displayed tensor identity. In dimension three, sectional curvatures from Ricci curvature in dimension three gives every sectional curvature at that point the value . In higher dimensions isotropic Ricci curvature does not determine every two-plane curvature.

The second covariant derivative of a Killing vector makes its restriction to every geodesic a Jacobi field. The difference of two fields with identical data has zero Jacobi initial values and vanishes in a convex normal neighborhood. The set on which both its value and covariant derivative vanish is closed by continuity and open by the same local argument, so connectedness makes it the whole manifold.
On a geodesically complete Riemannian manifold, every Killing vector field is complete and integrates to a global one-parameter subgroup of its isometry group. On the incomplete interval with its Euclidean metric, satisfies the Killing equation, but translations leave the interval in finite time. The full isometry group is only the identity and reflection. Local solutions of the Killing equation therefore need not equal the Lie algebra of global isometries without completeness.
Killing vector field Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-13
A Killing vector field describes a direction in which geometry has a continuous symmetry: moving points together along its flow of a vector field preserves the metric tensor, including its pairing of tangent vectors. Such a symmetry gives a geodesic conserved quantity from a Killing vector, often a component of momentum or angular momentum. The direction may vary with position: rotation provides the basic example.
On a Riemannian manifold or Lorentzian manifold with metric tensor , a smooth vector field is a Killing vector field when its Lie derivative of vanishes. If is its local flow of a vector field, the equivalent statements areThe middle equality uses the pullback of a covariant tensor: the local flow maps are isometries on their domains. The last equality is the Killing equation, using the Levi-Civita connection. The infinitesimal condition holds throughout an open domain and integrates to exact local isometries; it is stronger than making the first derivatives of vanish at a single point. See Tong, section 4.3.1, equation (4.29).
For example, on the interval with Euclidean metric , translates points by . This is a local isometry, but a point reaches the end of the interval in finite flow parameter. A local flow of a vector field can be incomplete; see Killing fields on incomplete manifolds need not generate global isometries. The full-plane translation and rotation examples under Euclidean Killing vector field instead have flows for every real .
Length of a curve Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-18
The length of a piecewise smooth curve is its arc length: , using either the Euclidean space norm or the norm from a specified Riemannian metric. A straight segment from to in Euclidean space has length , while a route that bends or retraces can be longer. On a Riemannian manifold, comparing these lengths over all routes defines Riemannian distance.
Local isometries are determined by first-order data Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-31
Two local isometries from a connected Riemannian manifold that have the same value and differential at one point agree everywhere. They preserve geodesics, so their equality follows on a normal neighborhood from . The set of points where both value and differential agree is consequently open, and continuity makes it closed. Connectedness completes the argument.
Local isometry Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-05
A local isometry between Riemannian manifolds is a local diffeomorphism with . Equivalently, its differentials are isometric linear isomorphisms between tangent spaces. It preserves the Levi-Civita connection, intrinsic sectional curvature, and affinely parametrized geodesics. A map whose differentials are merely isometric injections is an isometric immersion; the local diffeomorphism requirement distinguishes these notions.
Locally maximally symmetric space 2026-10-25
An -dimensional Riemannian manifold is locally maximally symmetric if its local Killing vector fields attain the dimension bound for Killing vector fields . This is equivalent to constant sectional curvature. Positive, zero and negative sectional curvature give local spherical geometry, Euclidean geometry and hyperbolic geometry, respectively. Global identifications can reduce the number of globally defined isometries without changing this local property. The spatial slices of an FLRW metric have this property.
Locally symmetric Riemannian manifold 2026-10-14
A Riemannian manifold is locally symmetric when its Riemann curvature tensor is parallel for the Levi-Civita connection. Along a geodesic, parallel transport then conjugates the Jacobi curvature operator at the initial point to the operator at every later point. Thus its eigenvalues stay constant. The condition is local and does not assert that global point reflections extend to isometries of the whole manifold.
Metric geodesic 2026-10-05
A unit-speed metric geodesic in a metric space is an isometric embedding of a real interval. Every restricted segment realizes the distance between its endpoints. A one-point interval permits a constant segment. In a unit-edge graph, shortest edge paths parametrized by metric path length are metric geodesics; no smooth structure is required. This is stronger than the differential definition of a geodesic in a Riemannian manifold, which need only minimize locally: on a unit circle, an arc of angle is a Riemannian geodesic but its endpoint distance is only .
Metric path length Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-06
For a continuous path in a metric space, take the supremum over finite partitions of . This definition allows and needs no derivative. A metric geodesic parametrized on has length . In a Riemannian manifold, it agrees with the usual arc length integral for a smooth curve.
Metric volume form 2026-10-06
On an oriented Riemannian manifold, the metric volume form is the volume form taking value one on positively oriented orthonormal frames. In an oriented manifold chart it has the displayed expression. Under an orientation-preserving coordinate change with Jacobian , acquires the factor , precisely matching the transformation of the top exterior product. Thus the expressions agree on chart overlaps. Orientation is needed to make a globally positive form, though the volume density exists without it.
Morse cell-attachment theorem for geodesic energy Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-14
On a complete compact Riemannian manifold, nondegenerate critical points of fixed-endpoint geodesic energy yield a CW complex model of the path space, with one cell per geodesic and dimension equal to its Morse index. Finite-dimensional broken-geodesic models prove the assertion at bounded energy, and exhaustion gives the full path space. On with distinct nonantipodal endpoints the cell dimensions are , one in each such dimension.
Myers-Steenrod theorem 2026-10-14
The isometry group of a smooth connected Riemannian manifold is a finite-dimensional Lie group, and its action is smooth. An isometry is determined by its value and derivative at one point, since it preserves the exponential map and continuation along geodesics. The stabilizer embeds in , giving dimension at most . For a compact manifold the isometry group is compact.
Myers's theorem 2026-10-14
For a connected Riemannian manifold of dimension , assume geodesic completeness and for a constant . The Riemannian distance then has diameter at most ; the manifold is compact and its fundamental group is finite. The dimension restriction excludes the vacuous one-dimensional Ricci bound.
Nonnegativity of the Hodge Laplacian Created 2026-10-03 Updated 2026-10-05
On a compact oriented Riemannian manifold without boundary, the codifferential is the adjoint operator of the exterior derivative. ConsequentlyEvery eigenvalue of the Hodge Laplacian is therefore nonnegative.
Normalized Ricci curvature 2026-10-14
For a Riemannian manifold of dimension , the normalized directional Ricci curvature averages, rather than sums, the sectional curvatures through a unit vector. Thus the Bonnet-Myers theorem gives from . With trace Ricci curvature the corresponding hypothesis is . The distinction changes positive constants but not the signs of Ricci curvature.
