Morphology (biology) 2026-10-13
Morphology concerns biological form and structure; a structural difference is one aspect of phenotype, not automatically a species boundary.
Mycobacterium smegmatis 2026-11-05
Mycobacterium smegmatis is a bacterial species used as an experimental model for mycobacterial molecular biology. Species identity and laboratory strain identity are different levels of description: the ATCC record for the genome-sequenced strain identifies a particular lineage, not every member of the species.[ref]

Its polynucleotide phosphorylase illustrates the model's scientific value. Researchers combined cryo-electron microscopy with enzyme assays to locate RNA in a three-subunit ring and test the contributions of selected amino acid residues. Comparing structure with catalytic measurements connects a molecular arrangement to a biochemical function.[ref]
Structure and mechanism of Mycobacterium smegmatis polynucleotide phosphorylase by Mihaela-Carmen Unciuleac and others. Abstract and Results, RNA-bound homotrimer and residue substitutions
For an original interpretation example, suppose a purified reference enzyme gives100 activity units and a substituted variant gives25 under the same stipulated assay conditions. The variant retains of that measured activity. This is evidence about the tested preparation and reaction; it does not by itself establish a fourfold change in bacterial growth or the same effect in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Nasonia Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
Nasonia is a genus of small parasitoid wasps used in research on genetics, speciation and host interactions. Developing offspring exploit a host animal rather than merely sharing its environment. Nasonia vitripennis and Nasonia giraulti support comparisons between related species.

Nasonia giraulti is a parasitoid wasp studied in comparison with Nasonia vitripennis. Crosses and behavioral measurements can separate inherited differences from environmental influences and help investigate barriers between species.
Neisseria 2026-11-05
Neisseria is a genus of bacteria containing both disease-associated species and species that commonly inhabit human mucosal surfaces without causing the corresponding disease. Neisseria gonorrhoeae is one pathogenic member; the behaviour of one species should not be assigned automatically to the entire genus.

Genome Sequencing Reveals Widespread Virulence Gene Exchange among Human Neisseria Species by Pradeep Reddy Marri and others. 2010, abstract and genome comparisons: commensal species and extensive genetic exchange
This makes the genus useful for studying how a shared genetic background interacts with host association. Possession of a gene associated with disease in another strain does not by itself establish that its new host has the same disease-causing phenotype. Neisseria gonorrhoeae 2026-11-05
Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the bacterium causing gonorrhoea, an infection of mucosal surfaces that can also produce complications beyond the original site. Some infections cause few recognizable symptoms, so symptom frequency and infection frequency need not coincide. [ref]
Gonorrhoea treatment guidance by CDC. Gonococcal Infections Among Adolescents and Adults, opening description and Diagnostic Considerations
It belongs to Neisseria, a genus that also includes human-associated commensal species. Shared ancestry therefore does not mean identical interactions with a host. Comparing genomes across the genus reveals genetic exchange, but the clinical behaviour of a strain depends on the organization and regulation of its genome as well as on host and tissue context. The disease name identifies a clinical entity; the species name identifies an organism.

Differences in ecological use or response that can reduce competition among species. Stable coexistence requires the relevant recovery-when-rare conditions, not merely the observation of different traits.
Nomenclatural type 2026-11-05
A nomenclatural type anchors a taxon name to a reference. In prokaryotic nomenclature, it need not be the most typical member. For a species this is normally a type strain; for a genus it is a designated species.[ref]
International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes. Prokaryotic Code (2025 Revision) by Aharon Oren and others. Rule 15 and Table 2, Taxonomic Categories and their Types
A reference and a statistical representative need not coincide. Suppose a hypothetical group contains bacterial strains T, U and V, with a stipulated trait measured as 1, 10 and 11 arbitrary units. Its arithmetic mean is units. Designating T as the type strain does not require its measurement to be close to that mean. Conversely, choosing U because its value lies closer to the mean would not itself make U the designated reference.
The nomenclatural type also makes naming decisions interpretable when a taxon is divided or combined with another. It supplies an anchor for applying an existing name through a change of circumscription.[ref]
International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes. Prokaryotic Code (2025 Revision) by Aharon Oren and others. Rule 17, application after division or union
The naming rules do not themselves delimit taxa or determine their biological relationships. Evidence about genomes and phenotypes supplies a different kind of information.[ref]

Nuclear DNA content 2026-10-18
Nuclear DNA content is the amount of DNA in a specified cell nucleus. Define relative to one unreplicated haploid set of the chosen species. It includes coding and non-coding DNA and excludes DNA outside the cell nucleus, such as a mitochondrion's genome. is an amount, whereas is a chromosome count; neither fixes the other across different species.
For an original numerical model, assign the three chromosome types unreplicated DNA amounts of 3, 2 and 1 arbitrary units. Then units: diploid G1 phase contains 12 units, G2 phase 24, each completed meiosis I product 12, and each completed meiosis II product 6. The totals and check conservation after copying. Equal chromosome counts alone would not justify equal DNA amounts if the sets had different sequence lengths.
How can an experiment measure the amount independently of chromosome counting? UCL's Cell Cycle Analysis by Propidium Iodide Staining, pp. 1–2, specifies a flow cytometric DNA-content assay. Washed biological cells receive cold 70% ethanol dropwise while vortexing, then at least 30 minutes on ice. After centrifugation and two washes, ribonuclease A removes RNA that would also bind the dye. Propidium iodide stains the preparation. A flow cytometry instrument such as the listed BD LSR II records individual-event fluorescence on a linear scale. Signal area versus height or width excludes doublets and clumps; acquisition is below 400 events per second, retaining at least 10,000 single-cell events. These are protocol settings, not measured results.[ref]
For a ploidy comparison, add a known diploid G1 phase reference processed with the same staining and detector settings, and an unstained background control. These are proposed comparison controls, beyond the protocol's clump-exclusion procedure. Proportional fluorescence then estimates relative Nuclear DNA content; it does not count chromosomes. A event could be a diploid G1 phase product or a replicated haploid product; could be replicated diploid material or an unreplicated four-set cell nucleus. Peaks alone therefore cannot establish ploidy or cell cycle stage without a reference and biological context. Uneven staining, residual RNA and unresolved doublets limit this inference; two particles can mimic one event.

OFF retinal bipolar cell 2026-11-05
An OFF retinal bipolar cell is a retinal bipolar cell whose central receptive response shows depolarization for an appropriate decrease in illumination. Its input synapse preserves the sign of a cone photoreceptor's voltage response through excitatory AMPA receptors or kainate receptors, rather than the sign-inverting arrangement of an ON retinal bipolar cell.[ref]
Bipolar cells use kainate and AMPA receptors to filter visual information into separate channels by S. H. DeVries. Introduction; sign-conserving cone-to-OFF transmission
In a 2000 experiment, simultaneous recordings from connected cone cells and OFF retinal bipolar cells, together with receptor-selective manipulations, distinguished receptor mechanisms in different morphological OFF types. Differences in recovery from receptor desensitization filtered the same cone signal into different temporal components.[ref]
Bipolar cells use kainate and AMPA receptors to filter visual information into separate channels by S. H. DeVries. Abstract and Results; paired recordings and receptor pharmacology
Thus two OFF types can agree on whether a light decrement excites them while differing in response timing. Response sign, temporal filtering and neuron identity are related measurements, not interchangeable labels. The result from the studied retina should not be taken as an identical receptor assignment for every OFF subtype in every species.
