The cytosol is the aqueous part of the cytoplasm surrounding its structures, including organelles. It contains water, ions and dissolved molecules, including many proteins; it is a crowded working environment rather than pure water. The liquid inside a cell nucleus or a membrane-bounded organelle is not the surrounding cytosol.
