In conventional Kaluza-Klein theory, bulk fields have a Kaluza-Klein tower with masses of order . If ordinary matter propagates in the extra dimension, the absence of accessible excited modes requires a small : a TeV compactification scale corresponds to roughly m; Planck-scale compactification would be much smaller, of order the Planck length. This is a scale estimate, not a universal radius limit independent of the fields and spectrum.
An unwarped brane-world scenario localizes ordinary fields on a brane while gravity explores a large compact bulk. The volume relation
makes gravity weak without a fundamental Planck-scale cutoff. In the original large-extra-dimension model, permits approximately millimetre/submillimetre dimensions for ; more dimensions are smaller. Ordinary-field KK bounds no longer limit these gravity-only radii, although gravitational and other constraints do. This replaces the large fundamental scale hierarchy by a large compact volume needing stabilization.
A warped brane-world scenario instead uses a position-dependent metric factor. In the two-brane Randall–Sundrum model, , so generates a weak scale from a Planck-sized input without a millimetre proper separation; for of Planck order, is tens of inverse-Planck lengths. The single-brane version even allows infinite proper size through gravity localization in a noncompact warped dimension; it is not by itself the two-brane redshift hierarchy construction. Thus warped proper size can be unbounded, while finite hierarchy models need specified warping and radius stabilization.
Supersymmetry addresses the hierarchy problem differently: boson/fermion cancellations protect scalar masses against quadratic sensitivity to high scales, with residual corrections controlled by soft supersymmetry breaking. It stabilizes a chosen hierarchy rather than explaining its initial size. Volume dilution and the warped redshift mechanism explain scale separation geometrically; neither automatically determines its moduli or removes all tuning.
Use geometrized units until converting the clock readings. By the Birkhoff theorem, the spherical vacuum exterior is a portion of the Schwarzschild spacetime with fixed mass :
The exterior is not flat and is not radiating merely because the surface moves. When the surface crosses , this exterior must be represented in regular ingoing Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates, rather than treating the Schwarzschild-coordinate divergence as a physical barrier.
The Oppenheimer-Snyder model has a homogeneous pressureless matter interior. Since its initial expansion vanishes but its density is positive, the Friedmann equation requires positive spatial curvature. Choose a comoving radial angle and the boundary's proper time , with the stopwatch set to zero at release. The interior FLRW metric and density are
The density law follows from the dust stress-energy tensor and its covariant conservation. The Friedmann equation and the initial rest condition give
Its contracting branch has the parameterization
Indeed and satisfy the displayed equation; is the turning point and is the final curvature singularity.
For homogeneous dust-ball matching, the boundary has areal radius . Matching its mass to the exterior gives
This is the gravitational mass parameter, not the integral of rest density over the curved proper-volume element. The matching can also be checked directly. The outward angular extrinsic curvature inside is ; outside it is . The boundary motion has
so these curvatures agree. The induced metric is on both sides and because the pressure-free boundary is geodesic. No artificial surface stress layer is required.
The observer moving with this boundary meets the event horizon when . From , the proper-time horizon crossing in homogeneous dust collapse occurs at
The singularity is reached at , so the remaining clock time is
These are finite proper times, even though the external static time diverges at horizon crossing.
Convert the supplied rounded units consistently: Planck masses and Planck lengths. Thus , , and in Planck units. Multiplying geometric times by seconds gives
At the accuracy justified by the rounded constants, these are about three milliseconds to horizon crossing and about seven microseconds more to the singularity. For , expanding gives , independently confirming the microsecond scale. The exact expression above retains the finite release-radius correction.
Strictly, this boundary clock reading is when the observer crosses the horizon, not when the horizon first exists anywhere. The event horizon inside an Oppenheimer-Snyder cloud is an outgoing radial null ray. Since , the interior metric is conformal to , and that ray has . Tracing it back from gives
For this cloud it starts at the centre after release, at comoving time seconds. This answers the literal global-formation interpretation as well; it is not an event on the outer observer's worldline. The distinction matters because an event horizon is defined by the entire future causal escape problem, not by a locally detectable signal of formation.
For the observer at infinity, use the boundary's conserved Killing energy in the exterior:
As , and . Consequently
where fixes a harmless dimensionless logarithm. For actual outgoing light signals the relevant retarded time is . Since ,
Therefore she never receives a signal showing the surface cross the horizon at any finite asymptotic time. Radiation emitted ever closer to crossing arrives ever later and is increasingly redshifted and diluted; photons emitted at or inside the event horizon cannot reach her. The formal crossing time at infinity is infinite, not the finite boundary stopwatch reading. Nor can the earlier global birth of the horizon be observed directly as a local flash from its central birth event.
The three identifications are
They match the same lower-dimensional theory, including its moduli of a string compactification, charged states and extended branes. Different weakly coupled descriptions occupy different limits of its moduli space.
For the M-theory circle duality, write and let be the eleven-dimensional Planck length. The standard length dictionary is
The circle radius is the type IIA superstring theory coupling modulus. The eleven-dimensional metric supplies the ten-dimensional metric, dilaton and Ramond–Ramond potential through Kaluza-Klein theory; the three-form supplies and the Neveu–Schwarz two-form by . Thus the field content also agrees with type IIA supergravity.
The M2-brane and M5-brane tensions are and . Wrapping one spatial direction multiplies the effective brane tension by . Consequently:
These tension and charge relations explain why increasing reveals an eleventh dimension. The simple circle dictionary describes massless type IIA supergravity; a D8-brane involves its massive extension and Romans mass.
For the M-theory torus duality, the complex structure of the torus is the IIB axion-dilaton
Its area supplies the remaining radius modulus. In a common nine-dimensional mass normalization, an M2-brane wrapped on the entire torus has mass , identified with ; hence is inversely related to the torus area in that normalization. Radii quoted in different string or Einstein metrics also include their Weyl rescaling. A rectangular torus with cycle radii has . Equivalently, first reduce to IIA and use T-duality:
where in this formula use the corresponding string metrics. Shrinking the torus area at fixed decompactifies the IIB circle. The torus mapping class group becomes IIB S-duality.
An M2-brane wrapped on a primitive one-cycle gives a (p,q) string, whose tension is the membrane tension times the cycle length before conversion to the IIB metric. Momentum on the torus matches winding of these strings on the IIB circle. An M5-brane wrapped on the whole torus gives an unwrapped D3-brane; an unwrapped M2-brane gives a D3-brane wrapped on the IIB circle. An M5-brane wrapped on one torus cycle gives a (p,q) five-brane wrapped on the IIB circle. The unwrapped M5-brane is the magnetic dual of the IIB circle's Kaluza-Klein mode, represented by its Kaluza-Klein monopole five-brane. These identifications match effective spatial dimensions as well as electric and magnetic charges.
For the M-theory K3 duality, the common noncompact spacetime has seven dimensions and sixteen supersymmetry generators. A Ricci flat K3 surface has a positive three-plane in its second real cohomology, equipped with the K3 intersection lattice of signature . The unit-volume moduli space of Ricci-flat K3 metrics has local form
with a discrete lattice identification and one additional positive volume modulus. This is the heterotic Narain moduli space on , together with the seven-dimensional coupling: its torus metric has six parameters, its antisymmetric tensor three, and its sixteen gauge Wilson lines forty-eight, giving before the dilaton.
The coupling–volume relation can be checked dimensionally rather than guessed. A wrapped M5-brane gives a heterotic fundamental string with tension , so its squared string length is proportional to . The seven-dimensional gravitational coupling is proportional to . Their dimensionless ratio gives
Thus the large-volume M-description corresponds to strong heterotic coupling. Overall constants depend on the normalization of the lower-dimensional coupling.
There are twenty-two gauge fields from reducing on the twenty-two harmonic two-forms of K3, matching the heterotic sixteen gauge vectors plus three metric and three two-form vectors. The remaining seven-dimensional three-form is dual to the heterotic two-form. A wrapped M2-brane gives an electrically charged particle in the shared charge lattice, matching heterotic momentum, winding and gauge charges; an M5-brane on a two-cycle gives its magnetic three-brane. An M5-brane wrapping all of K3 gives the heterotic string, while an unwrapped M2-brane corresponds to a heterotic NS5-brane wrapped on . At suitable collapsing two-cycles, charged membrane states become massless and yield ADE gauge enhancement. The geometry accounts for both generic abelian charges and nonabelian enhancement. There is no extra K3 two-form modulus in the M-description: its fundamental potential is a three-form, and .
For bosonic embedding coordinates , the supermembrane action truncates to
The first term is its induced worldvolume volume and the second is its Wess-Zumino brane coupling. A membrane of the opposite orientation reverses .
The M2-brane supergravity solution admits the harmonic function
with arbitrary centre positions in eight transverse dimensions. Away from the sources, the Laplacian of each term is zero. The unrestricted positions describe static separated membranes carrying aligned charges, so their separations have no potential. Physically, their gravitational attraction is cancelled by their four-form charge repulsion. This is the M2-brane probe no-force identity, which can also be checked directly without relying only on the existence of the multicentre solution.
Keep the field-strength ordering printed in the paper and use . If , a gauge vanishing at infinity is
The last equality uses the sign acquired by moving a one-form past a three-form. For this convention the parallel probe has . In static gauge, at a fixed transverse position, its induced worldvolume metric is , hence and
Using the opposite convention for , and orientation together yields the same cancellation. Changing only the probe charge produces an anti-membrane, with nonconstant potential . Thus the orientation cannot be dropped from the argument.
The cancellation also survives an expansion for slow transverse motion. With ,
There is no static potential and no position dependence in the leading kinetic coefficient.
Near an isolated positive membrane charge, write with and . The regular membrane near-horizon limit removes the asymptotically flat constant and gives
Set . Then
Thus the Anti-de Sitter spacetime radius is half the sphere radius. In orthonormal units the four-form has magnitude along the AdS volume form, the Freund-Rubin compactification flux.
The full asymptotically flat solution has spinors subject to one oriented membrane projector, leaving sixteen real parameters. In the throat, the Killing spinor equation separates into the standard AdS and sphere equations with correlated signs fixed by the flux. There are four real AdS solutions and eight real solutions for the required signs, so
This is maximal supersymmetry of AdS4 times S7: the additional sixteen spinors need not extend through the asymptotically flat region. A multicentre geometry therefore remains globally sixteen-supersymmetric even though each regular local throat has this enhancement. The classical supergravity description is controlled when is large compared with the eleven-dimensional Planck length; singular harmonic multipoles not representing regular positive membrane centres do not automatically have the same throat.
Work first in units . Black-hole thermodynamics starts with the laws of black-hole mechanics. For a connected stationary regular Killing horizon, the Zeroth law of black-hole mechanics makes its surface gravity constant when the Einstein field equations and dominant energy condition hold. This parallels uniform equilibrium temperature. For neighboring stationary asymptotically flat four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell black holes, the First law of black-hole mechanics is
where is the horizon angular velocity and its electric potential relative to infinity. The last terms are rotational and electromagnetic work, analogous to the work terms in . The second law of black-hole mechanics, expressed by Hawking's area theorem, makes the total future horizon area nondecreasing for classical matter obeying the null energy condition and global assumptions such as strong asymptotic predictability. The third law of black-hole mechanics is an unattainability statement: subject to the usual regularity assumptions, the weak energy condition, and a bounded stress-energy tensor, no finite physical process reduces the surface gravity of a regular horizon to zero. It does not assert that extremal black holes have zero area or zero entropy.
Classical geometry alone fixes an analogy, not a nonzero physical temperature. Quantum field theory supplies Hawking temperature . Comparing the area term of the first law with gives for nonextremal holes, and hence the standard Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. Restoring physical constants,
Here restored is the physical acceleration surface gravity and is the squared Planck length. The first-law comparison determines the area coefficient, leaving an additive entropy constant unspecified; the displayed formula is the usual convention. Its area scaling, rather than ordinary volume scaling, signals that the available thermodynamic degrees of freedom of a gravitating system are constrained by the horizon geometry.
Particle production explains the quantum input. For a real scalar field obeying the massless covariant wave equation, the Klein-Gordon inner product on solutions is
The wave equation makes its current divergence-free, so the product is independent of a Cauchy hypersurface when the boundary flux vanishes. Use suitably normalized wave packets or the appropriate continuum distributions. Asymptotic past and future Minkowski spacetimes give preferred positive-frequency solution mode bases and , normalized by , and . Between those regions, a nonstationary geometry generally has no preferred positive-frequency splitting.
The mode bases are related by a Bogoliubov transformation,
The last identities follow from conservation of the Klein-Gordon inner product and are the canonical identities for a bosonic Bogoliubov transformation. Expanding the field in either complete basis and extracting its positive-frequency coefficient gives
Thus the state annihilated by every has
This particle number from Bogoliubov coefficients is nonzero when time evolution mixes positive and negative frequencies. It describes one state as vacuum in the early particle basis and populated in the late basis; it does not require an arbitrary choice of a vacuum at each intermediate time. For a finite implementable transformation the state remains a squeezed pure quantum state. In infinitely many modes, a common unitary bosonic Fock space implementation requires additional conditions, such as the beta map being a Hilbert-Schmidt operator; finite wave packet observables need not share every global divergence of an ideal continuum calculation.
For gravitational collapse, the future is not globally Minkowski: it contains a black hole. The relevant late out-basis includes modes reaching future null infinity together with modes entering the future event horizon. Modes on infinity alone are not a complete Cauchy basis. Nevertheless the same mode-mixing calculation determines the outgoing particle flux. Near a nonextremal horizon, the logarithm in the tortoise coordinate converts regular early null coordinates into the Hawking exponential ray map
where is the early affine null coordinate and is late retarded time at infinity. Backward propagation of a late outgoing mode gives a factor for . Its positive- and negative-frequency Fourier integrals differ by analytic continuation around the logarithmic branch. With a convergence regulator they reduce to
Taking gives the thermal ratio of Hawking Bogoliubov coefficients, . Combining this with the canonical normalization yields the bosonic occupation . Late-time wave packets turn formal continuum coefficients into a finite number flux.
A Schwarzschild black hole has , so this spectrum has . The exterior curvature potential partly reflects the outgoing modes. Its transmission probabilities are the greybody factors, giving, for one massless scalar species in the stationary late-time approximation,
Thus the horizon temperature is universal, while the spectrum received at infinity is not a perfect featureless blackbody radiation spectrum. The derivation assumes the near-horizon quantum state inherited from a regular collapse vacuum and ignores rapid backreaction over the timescale of the packets. Exponentially blueshifted precursor frequencies indicate the usual short-distance assumption in the semiclassical calculation, not an independently demonstrated quantum-gravity description of the endpoint.
The outgoing positive energy flux drives black-hole evaporation. At leading order for a large isolated Schwarzschild black hole, area scales as and temperature as , giving and a lifetime of order , with the coefficient depending on species and transmission factors. Its negative heat capacity of a Schwarzschild black hole, , means that it heats up as it loses mass and cannot be in stable canonical equilibrium with an unlimited thermal reservoir. The approximation fails when quantum-gravitational scales are reached and does not fix whether the endpoint is complete evaporation, a remnant, or something else.
Area loss does not contradict the classical area theorem, because the quantum stress-energy tensor need not obey the classical null energy condition; negative horizon energy accompanies the positive outgoing flux. The appropriate thermodynamic statement is the generalized second law, involving . Finally, Hawking radiation raises the black hole information paradox: if a pure quantum state completely evaporates into an exactly thermal mixed quantum state and its partners disappear, the result conflicts with ordinary unitary time evolution. Early outgoing radiation can be mixed simply because of its entanglement with interior modes while the complete state remains a pure quantum state; that fact alone is not information loss. Resolving the fate of all correlations through the evaporation endpoint requires more than the leading semiclassical flux calculation.
If Bob opens the trap, Ehrenfest theorem gives branch-dependent Newtonian accelerations
so, for ,
After time , the centers of Bob's two conditional wave packets differ by
For Alice's superposition, these distinguishable Bob states become entangled with and ; for Alice's mixture there was no initial coherence to entangle. Taking Bob's minimum packet width to be the Planck length , appreciable branch distinguishability begins when , at
Keeping the trap closed suppresses this branch separation.
If , Bob could choose whether to destroy Alice's local coherence before a light signal from his laboratory arrived. Any procedure by which Alice distinguished the coherent superposition from the mixture in less than would then enable superluminal signalling. The largest dangerous separation is determined parametrically by , which gives
Causality therefore requires
Using for the Planck mass ,
up to numerical factors.
Use dimensions for mass, length and time. The reduced Planck constant, gravitational constant and speed of light have dimensions
For to have the dimensions of a length, dimensional analysis requires
The first equation gives ; the third gives . Substitution in the second gives . Hence
With , and , the Planck length is
The proposed monomial fixes the dimensionless prefactor to one; dimensional analysis on its own cannot select an arbitrary dimensionless multiplier.
