Horizontal phase velocity 2026-10-14
For phase with , hold fixed: a contour of constant wave phase advances in at . This is the speed at which a tilted wavefront crosses a horizontal line. It differs from the horizontal component of the vector phase velocity, , which is defined along the wavevector.
In a smooth interior region with locally constant shear , a wound azimuthal Fourier mode has radial wavenumber . Integrating its resistive damping rate gives the exponential decay in the title. The characteristic time is . For and , , where . This is a high-magnetic Reynolds number interior transient on a time long compared with the rotation time but short compared with . Physical magnetic field components may have additional algebraic factors from taking derivatives of the wound magnetic vector potential. A maintained exterior field, an axial core and a circulation-edge boundary layer prevent interpreting this estimate as an exact, uniform, infinite-time solution.
Vapor pressure 2026-10-14
The equilibrium pressure of a vapor in contact with its liquid or solid at a specified temperature. For pure liquid–gas phase coexistence with negligible interface effects, it is the pressure on their phase coexistence curve. In a gas mixture, distinguish the component's partial pressure from the total pressure; the pure-substance Integrated Clausius-Clapeyron relation does not describe the total pressure of arbitrary humid air.
Triple point 2026-10-14
A triple point is a temperature–pressure pair at which three distinct bulk thermodynamic phases of a one-component substance coexist in thermodynamic equilibrium. In the familiar solid–liquid–gas case, their three phase coexistence curves meet. Other combinations, such as two crystal polymorphs and a liquid, also qualify: “triple” counts thermodynamic phases, rather than states-of-matter categories.
For the same substance, the chemical potential in each thermodynamic phase must agree:There are two independent equality conditions for two controls, temperature and pressure. Generically they select an isolated pair ; the third pairwise equality follows from the first two. Equivalently, the phase rule gives . This counts independent intensive controls, not phase fractions: changing the amounts of the three thermodynamic phases need not change the ideal bulk temperature and pressure, provided all three remain present. Different sets of crystal polymorphs can give different triple points for the same substance.[ref]
Gibbs Phase Rule (MIT 10.213 course material). Gibbs Phase Rule, three-phase count and pressure–temperature diagram discussion
At a liquid-gas critical point, the two fluid thermodynamic phases instead merge, and their mass density difference and latent heat vanish. It is the endpoint of the liquid–gas phase coexistence curve, rather than a meeting of three distinct thermodynamic phases. The regular independent-equality count used for a triple point cannot explain this merger. A triple point can retain finite mass density and entropy differences between all three thermodynamic phases.[ref]

Hyperphantom map of spectra 2026-10-14
A hyperphantom map of spectra is a stable map such that for every , for arbitrary based spaces and all nonnegative . Equivalently it induces zero on the entire represented cohomology theory. This is a stronger condition than being a phantom map of spectra, which tests only finite spectra.
Universal evaluation phantom map 2026-10-14
Choose one representative of each finite spectrum and form . Let evaluate each summand and let . Every map from a finite spectrum factors through its corresponding summand, so is a phantom map of spectra. If , exactness supplies a section of , making a retract of . Consequently a spectrum that is not a retract of any wedge of finite spectra has a nonzero such phantom.
Phantom maps vanish on represented homology 2026-10-14
For a phantom map of spectra and a finite CW complex , Spanier-Whitehead duality identifies with maps from the finite spectrum . Hence there. An arbitrary CW complex is the filtered union of its finite subcomplexes, and represented homology theory commutes with that filtered union because spheres are compact. Thus induces zero on the entire represented homology theory.
Put and . The mass, momentum and energy jump conditions for a perpendicular magnetohydrodynamic shock factor into the unchanged state andFor the compressive physical branch , positive downstream pressure implies when and the upstream sound speed or Alfvén speed is nonzero. Indeed the polynomial impliesIt then gives : the upstream flow exceeds the perpendicular fast magnetosonic wave speed. The exactly cold unmagnetized strong-shock limit reaches the upper compression bound.
With , a fast simple wave in magnetohydrodynamics has constant and . Its longitudinal velocity satisfies , and . Along this state curve the speed derivative is , which is nonzero. Compressive profiles therefore exhibit shock formation by characteristic intersection, unlike a linearly degenerate characteristic field.
Local periodogram smoothing 2026-10-14
Average neighboring periodogram ordinates with nonnegative weights summing to one. Let the number of averaged ordinates tend to infinity while their frequency span, of order , tends to zero. For a smooth spectral density and suitable short-memory or fourth-order dependence conditions, the bias tends to zero and variance is of order . Smooth second-order spectral density alone does not ensure this: a time-constant random scale multiplying independent white noise has a smooth unconditional spectrum but a nonergodic random limiting local power.
Finite-record Fourier covariance bound 2026-10-14
For a centered stationary real Gaussian sequence, let and be its cosine and sine coefficients with normalization at a nonzero Fourier frequency. Grouping the double covariance sum by lag and extending each lag sum to a whole record leaves at most omitted bounded products. The full cosine-sine sum is zero, giving the bound. If , the two coefficients become asymptotically uncorrelated, and their limiting joint normal distribution consequently has independent components.
Exponential limit of a one-sided periodogram 2026-10-14
At an interior frequency, the real and imaginary Fourier coefficients of a short-memory Gaussian time series converge jointly to independent centered normal variables, each with variance , where is the one-sided spectral density. Their squared sum therefore converges to . Its variance tends to , so an unsmoothed periodogram is not consistent when . Averaging nearby ordinates can reduce this persistent variance.
Return-free state in a Markov chain 2026-10-14
A state can have no positive-probability return at any positive time, for example when its transition-matrix column is zero. Its return-time set is empty. The convention assigns period zero; conventions defining period only for a nonempty return set instead leave it undefined. Such a state must not be called aperiodic merely because its communicating class is a singleton.
Compact dual of a period domain 2026-10-14
The compact dual is the complex projective flag variety imposing prescribed filtration dimensions and , but neither real opposition nor positivity. In weight one it is the complex Lagrangian Grassmannian. In polarized K3 weight two it is an isotropic-line quadric.
Siegel upper half-space 2026-10-14
Positive complex Lagrangian subspaces for the integral symplectic form are graphs . Isotropy is the symmetry of , and gives positivity. For in the symplectic group, the action is .
K3 period domain 2026-10-14
On the K3 intersection lattice, this open quadric has complex dimension twenty and records the period line . Fixing a positive class of type adds and yields a nineteen-dimensional domain for primitive polarized cohomology of signature . The distinction is necessary: the unrestricted full lattice has signature and does not satisfy polarization positivity on all of .
Yates's correction for continuity 2026-10-14
For a two-by-two contingency table, subtracting one half from each absolute observed-minus-expected count difference, with truncation at zero, gives the displayed corrected Pearson chi-squared statistic. Expected counts use the independence model . The subtraction compensates approximately for using a continuous chi-squared distribution for discrete counts. It can make the test conservative. The corrected statistic should be distinguished from the ordinary uncorrected Pearson chi-squared statistic.
For independent groups each containing independent Bernoulli trials with common probability , the group count has a binomial distribution. If groups have count , the maximum-likelihood estimate is . Form the Pearson chi-squared statistic using . With all categories retained, an interior true parameter, and sufficiently large expected counts, its null limit is a chi-squared distribution with statistical degrees of freedom: one degree is removed by the fixed total and another by fitting . Small expected counts require care with this approximation. If categories are pooled, the fitted parameter and calibration should correspond to the pooled statistical model; simply pooling a statistic after fitting the unpooled model does not automatically give the usual chi-squared limit.
Massive Pauli-Lubanski Casimir 2026-10-14
For a massive positive-energy unitary irreducible representation of the Poincaré group with signature , choose a rest frame. The Pauli-Lubanski pseudovector has zero time component and spatial components , up to a common sign convention. Its square is therefore . The SU(2) little-group representation has spin and , proving the invariant value. The mass and spin label the massive induced representation of the Poincare double cover.
Pauli-Lubanski orthogonality 2026-10-14
In , contracting with gives zero because the commuting momentum products are symmetric in while the alternating tensor is antisymmetric. Reordering and makes no difference because the resulting metric contractions with the alternating tensor vanish.
