Operator associativity 2026-10-14
The syntactic grouping convention for successive operators of the same precedence. Left grouping of subtraction makes
a-b-c mean (a-b)-c; it does not make subtraction an associative operation. Von Neumann algebra 2026-10-14
A unital star-subalgebra of the bounded operators on a Hilbert space that is closed in the weak operator topology, equivalently in the strong operator topology. The Von Neumann double commutant theorem makes these conditions equivalent to equality with the double commutant of an operator algebra. It is norm closed and hence a C-star algebra.

Quasi-local observable algebra 2026-10-14
For a lattice system, finite-region observable algebras embed into larger ones by tensoring with the identity. Their union has a norm closure called the quasi-local observable algebra, a C-star algebra. It describes finite-support observables and norm limits of such observables. An operator flipping every spin of an infinite lattice need not belong to it: successive finite-region flips are not norm-Cauchy. Restrictions to this algebra can therefore lose relative-phase information retained by increasingly nonlocal finite-system observables.
D-brane scalar-position normalization Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
A commuting diagonal expectation value has one transverse eigenvalue vector for each brane. In the covariant derivative normalization , the off-diagonal gauge field has mass . The corresponding stretched string has mass in its massless oscillator sector. Equality fixes the displayed scalar-position normalization, up to a common coordinate origin. The trace describes center-of-mass motion and the eigenvalue difference describes separation.
Bosonic stretched-string tachyon threshold 2026-10-14
For two static parallel D-branes separated transversely by , the open bosonic string mass spectrum becomes . The classical stretching contribution is the square of the string tension times the separation, while the oscillator vacuum contributes the intercept term. Thus the ground state is a tachyon for , massless at equality, and massive above it. Its real rest energy, when stable, is ; the vacuum correction belongs to energy squared and is not an additive fixed subtraction from the stretching energy. Angled branes change oscillator moding and require a different formula.
Open-string oscillator degeneracy Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
For an ordinary critical open string with all Neumann boundary conditions, there are 24 independent transverse creation oscillators at each positive mode number . Summing their nonnegative occupation numbers gives one factor . The coefficient counts oscillator polarizations at level , excluding continuous center-of-mass momentum and additional endpoint multiplicities. Cauchy coefficient formula gives .

Domain (mathematical analysis) 2026-10-14
A domain is a nonempty connected open set in the ambient space under discussion. In complex analysis this normally means an open connected subset of . A star-shaped set that is open is a domain, but a domain need not be a simply connected domain and can have a period obstruction to a holomorphic antiderivative.
Geometric correction for approximate surjectivity Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-25
Let be a bounded linear operator, a Banach space, and a normed vector space. Suppose each residual has an approximate preimage of norm at most leaving error at most , where . Correct successive residuals to get vectors with . Their absolutely convergent sum in maps exactly to , and its norm is at most . Completeness of is not needed for this argument.
Fourier decay from a Green-function derivative jump Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
If is continuous, piecewise twice differentiable, and has derivative jump at , then its distributional second derivative is . If the regular part is integrable and the boundary terms vanish, two integrations by parts give the displayed asymptotic expansion by the Riemann-Lebesgue lemma. A jump in itself instead produces at leading order. This distinguishes the different decay rates of the streamfunction and streamwise velocity in linear inviscid damping in unbounded Couette flow.
For , this probability generating function has probabilities and for , where the product after is empty for . All probabilities are positive and sum to one, while the expected value is infinite. In a Galton-Watson process starting with one individual, the generation- probability generating function is . The branching extinction probability is , obtained by taking the limit of and using that extinction by generation is an increasing sequence of events.
Gluing of cycles in an iterated Lorenz map 2026-10-14
The two-cycle of has points and multiplier . Crossing changes its sign and passes through the critical cycle . The sign lift therefore changes from two stable two-cycles to one stable four-cycle. The second iterate is continuous at zero at the transition, but retains jumps at the nonzero preimages of zero. Thus the return-map interpretation concerns a neighborhood of zero, not continuity of the whole second iterate on the real line.

Antarctic bottom water Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
Antarctic bottom water is a dense southern-origin water mass that ventilates much of the abyssal ocean. Cooling and brine rejection form dense shelf water; its descent and mixing with adjacent waters contribute to Antarctic bottom water production. Shelf production is geographically concentrated and does not mean that every polynya exports water to the abyss.
Antarctic Circumpolar Current Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
The Antarctic Circumpolar Current is the eastward ocean circulation encircling Antarctica and connecting the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Its direction differs from the predominantly westward Antarctic Coastal Current closer to the continent. Wind stress, oceanic density gradients and seabed geometry shape the current; it is not a single uniform-speed ring.[ref]

[ref]The Ocean Areas by British Antarctic Survey. §2.2.1, wind stress, submarine orography and density gradients; coastal east-to-west drift versus the eastward circumpolar current
The current illustrates why ocean dynamics require both forcing and boundaries. Atmospheric winds supply momentum, geostrophic balance relates much of the large-scale flow to horizontal pressure gradients, and underwater ridges redirect its path. Measuring the current therefore involves velocity and water-column structure across a section, rather than tracking one surface parcel and assigning that speed to the entire ocean.
Antarctic Coastal Current Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
The Antarctic Coastal Current is a mainly westward flow near the Antarctic coast. It can transport icebergs along the continental margin; coastal geometry, winds and regional circulation make trajectories variable.
Antarctic Convergence Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
The Antarctic Convergence is the circumpolar oceanic transition where cold Antarctic waters meet and mix with warmer waters farther north. It is associated with the Antarctic Polar Front, a boundary between contrasting water masses rather than a fixed line on a map. The Australian Antarctic Program identifies this mixing region and its enhanced nutrient concentrations.[ref]
Antarctic geography by Australian Antarctic Program. Southern Ocean paragraphs: meeting and mixing of cold Antarctic and warmer northern waters, and nutrient enrichment
A ship crossing the region can record a marked change in near-surface temperature together with changes in the vertical water-column structure. The physical distinction is between water masses with different density and thermal properties, so a temperature section is more informative than latitude alone. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current follows an eastward path around the continent; the Antarctic Convergence identifies a frontal region within this broader circulation.
Cosmological event horizon 2026-10-14
For a comoving observer in a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric, a finite future conformal time interval gives an event horizon at the displayed comoving radius. Its physical radius at time is .
For every , choose a nonzero smooth spectral bump supported in with , and let be its inverse Fourier transform. Then is a nonzero Schwartz function, vanishes on all integer samples, and its transform is the difference of bumps shifted to and . Its support lies strictly within . Thus even a small bandwidth increase destroys uniqueness from unit-spaced samples.
