A singular value decomposition of the charged-lepton Yukawa matrix uses independent unitary rotations of left- and right-handed leptons. Their gauge-covariant kinetic terms are unchanged because each rotation mixes identical Standard Model representations. After electroweak symmetry breaking, the nonnegative singular values give Dirac masses and diagonal Higgs boson couplings . When the neutrinos are massless, rotating their left-handed fields with the charged partners preserves the diagonal weak charged current.
The gauge-covariant kinetic term of the Higgs doublet gives . Differentiation with respect to the external fields yields Feynman rules for one Higgs boson and two matching massive electroweak gauge bosons, and for two Higgs bosons and the same pair. Identical neutral fields supply combinatorial factors. The neutral radial Higgs boson has no corresponding elementary coupling to photons at tree level.
Electroweak doublet gauge-boson mass matrix Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-14
For a Higgs doublet with hypercharge and vacuum expectation value , its gauge-covariant kinetic term gives the neutral gauge-boson mass matrix
in the basis. Its eigenvalues are zero and , and the Weinberg angle rotation gives the photon and Z boson. The two charged electroweak gauge bosons have . The zero eigenvalue expresses the unbroken electric-charge gauge symmetry.
The gauge-covariant kinetic term for two massless quarks separates into left- and right-handed parts. Independent constant unitary quark flavor rotations preserve these terms, giving classical internal symmetry in addition to local color . The singlet axial has a chiral anomaly, while the nonsinglet chiral symmetry and vector baryon number remain exact quantum symmetries, up to their shared discrete identifications. Equal nonzero quark masses reduce the continuous flavor symmetry to .
Use and . For each generation , the leptons are
Both are color singlets. The conjugate antilepton fields transform in the conjugate representations and have opposite hypercharge; they are already included by the conjugate fields in the Lagrangian. The two components of have electric charges , and has charge . There is no right-handed neutrino representation in this field content. These assignments use the electroweak representation and hypercharge table in the same hypercharge normalization as the scalar doublet.
For a doublet of hypercharge , define
The term is absent for a singlet. Under the local transformation , the gauge fields transform so that . Consequently the required gauge-covariant kinetic terms are
The fields of definite chirality are defined with . Since has hypercharge , the Yukawa interaction
is invariant: its hypercharges add to zero, and contracts the two doublet indices. A bare charged-lepton mass violates these assignments. No renormalizable neutrino Yukawa term is available without a right-handed neutrino. A gauge-invariant scalar potential depending on can select the nonzero vacuum, without altering these kinetic and Yukawa constructions.
There is an explicit local unitary gauge transformation whenever :
Thus, with the real field ,
This proves the polar coordinates for the electroweak Higgs doublet constructively. The gauge choice is local about the nonzero vacuum; it need not be nonsingular at zeros of the doublet.
The three identical-generation kinetic terms permit unitary flavor changes. A singular value decomposition gives with . Rotate both components of each left doublet together, and the right singlets independently. In this basis,
The left/right cross terms combine into this Dirac mass. Since the neutrinos have no mass matrix, their simultaneous left rotation preserves a diagonal charged current. This is charged-lepton Yukawa matrix diagonalization; the neutrinos remain massless in the stated renormalizable model.
The scalar kinetic term gives
Introduce and . The combinations , , and therefore diagonalize the quadratic terms:
The factor applies to the real neutral field, not to the complex charged field. The massless photon corresponds to the unbroken generator , which annihilates the vacuum. This gives the electroweak doublet gauge-boson mass matrix and its diagonal spectrum.
Work with canonically normalized real components of the scalar field; a complex representation can first be written in terms of its real and imaginary components. At a vacuum expectation value , expansion of the scalar potential gives
The linear term vanishes by stationarity. Thus the scalar mass matrix is the Hessian matrix of the scalar potential. Invariance under each Lie algebra generator gives the identity . Differentiating this identity with respect to and evaluating at the stationary point removes the term containing , leaving
The kernel of the map is precisely the Lie algebra of the stabilizer subgroup H. Consequently its restriction to a complementary space of broken Lie algebra generators is injective: a linear combination that annihilates would belong both to the stabilizer algebra and its complement, and hence would vanish. There are therefore independent Goldstone directions in the scalar mass matrix, tangent to the vacuum manifold. There are symmetry-protected massless scalars.
This Goldstone theorem guarantees at least that many zero quadratic masses. The claim that these are all the massless scalars additionally requires nonzero curvature transverse to the vacuum orbit. For example, , with , has an ordinary spherical vacuum manifold but its entire Hessian matrix vanishes there. These accidental massless radial modes beyond Goldstone modes are not excluded by the hypotheses. For the indicated orthogonal group breaking, the protected number is
For the Higgs doublet, put and wherever . If , then
This explicitly exhibits the three angular coordinates as an SU(2) transformation of a real radial field. In particular, the polar coordinates for the electroweak Higgs doublet can locally be chosen in the form
At the vacuum the three variations generated by , , and acting on are independent over the reals. They span the three broken directions; the remaining generator annihilates the vacuum. This proves that the exponential supplies local angular coordinates. An inverse local gauge transformation, applied also to the gauge fields, removes these three fields in unitary gauge. They supply the longitudinal polarizations of the massive W bosons and Z boson through the Higgs mechanism. The parameterization is local about a nonzero vacuum, rather than a coordinate system through every possible zero of the Higgs doublet.
Use the metric and define the charged W bosons and neutral gauge fields by
where , , and . Direct substitution into the gauge-covariant kinetic term gives
and hence
The electroweak doublet gauge-boson mass matrix in the basis is
Its normalized zero direction is and its massive direction is . Thus the scalar-vector terms in physical fields are
with the tree-level electroweak gauge-boson masses
These are also charge eigenstates. The unbroken U(1) gauge symmetry has generator ; on the Higgs doublet, . Since , the combinations have charges , while Z, the photon, and H are neutral. The photon disappears from the displayed scalar-vector terms because . The photon is massless and has no direct tree-level coupling to the remaining radial scalar in this sector. This does not remove its interactions with charged W bosons, or exclude a scalar-to-photon interaction generated by loops.
Finally, retain the printed normalization of the Higgs field potential:
The kinetic term is , so the Higgs radial mass for a half-normalized quartic potential is . The extra factor of two familiar from a potential with prefactor , rather than , does not apply here.
Use natural units and the Minkowski metric . A massive spin-one particle has three physical particle polarizations, whereas a massless gauge boson has two. Giving a vector a mass must account for this extra longitudinal state while preserving a positive physical state space, controlled high-energy scattering and, if a fundamental perturbative theory is sought, renormalizability.
At the free-field level there is no inconsistency. The Proca action
gives the Proca equation . Taking its divergence gives , and then . For the divergence constraint removes one of the four components, leaving three positive-norm physical modes. The time component is constrained, rather than an independent negative-norm propagating oscillator. The mass term does, however, change under , so the ordinary massless gauge invariance is no longer manifest.
The difficulty becomes acute for generic interactions. Inverting the quadratic operator gives the Proca propagator
The longitudinal part approaches order at large momentum, rather than falling as . Thus the usual ultraviolet power counting deteriorates. There is a parallel external-state problem: for ,
Longitudinal external legs can generate powers of in a scattering amplitude. These are the high-energy obstruction for a hard vector mass. Conserved Abelian currents can remove dangerous contractions, so one should not conclude that every massive-vector interaction is impossible.
For a massive non-Abelian vector with gauge-like cubic and quartic couplings, cancellations among diagrams remove the largest powers, but without a suitable additional sector longitudinal scattering still grows like , where is the symmetry-breaking scale. A partial-wave coefficient is then of order . Partial-wave unitarity requires its real part to remain bounded, so perturbation theory fails at energies of order the electroweak scale times a modest loop factor, around the TeV scale for electroweak vectors. This is a limit on the perturbative description, not a proof that a low-energy massive-vector effective field theory is inconsistent.
The Higgs mechanism supplies a weakly coupled completion. For an Abelian example, take a complex scalar field with
Locally write . Its gauge-covariant kinetic term becomes
The combination is invariant under , . In unitary gauge , it contains with , as well as the correlated and interactions. The two original gauge polarizations and two real scalar components become three massive-vector polarizations and one radial Higgs boson. The would-be Goldstone boson supplies the longitudinal state. This counting explains why the Goldstone theorem for spontaneously broken global symmetries does not imply an extra physical massless particle here. Local gauge symmetry is a redundancy; choosing a Higgs background after gauge fixing does not explicitly break the gauge invariance of the action.
The extra scalar interactions also repair high-energy scattering. By the Goldstone-boson equivalence theorem, the leading longitudinal-vector amplitude can be computed using the would-be Goldstone bosons. For a charged-to-neutral channel in the linear scalar model, the scalar contact and radial-exchange terms give
This Higgs cancellation in longitudinal vector scattering removes the uncontrolled growth. It also shows why a very large scalar self-coupling would itself make perturbation theory unreliable; introducing a scalar is not a license to ignore partial-wave unitarity.
Although the unitary gauge propagator looks like the badly behaved Proca propagator, renormalizability is conveniently established in an R-xi gauge. Using Cartesian scalar fluctuations, the quadratic mixing is . The gauge-fixing term cancels it and gives
At fixed finite this falls as . The would-be scalar modes and Faddeev-Popov ghosts remain in intermediate calculations. Gauge identities, organized through BRST symmetry, make unphysical states cancel from physical amplitudes and constrain counterterms to the gauge-invariant renormalizable form. With a renormalizable scalar sector and cancellation of gauge anomalies, spontaneously broken gauge theory is renormalizable and unitary on its physical states; the bosonic construction is demonstrated in the original massive Yang-Mills renormalizability proof. The ultraviolet limit and limit do not commute, so the unitary-gauge numerator alone is not a valid disproof of this result.
In the Standard Model, a Higgs doublet breaks the manifest electroweak group from to . The scalar kinetic term yields
Three scalar directions supply the longitudinal polarizations of and , while the unbroken electromagnetic generator leaves the photon massless. The radial Higgs boson remains physical.
There is an important Abelian alternative. The Stueckelberg mechanism introduces a scalar with , invariant under , . With suitable conserved-current couplings this can describe a renormalizable massive Abelian gauge theory without a radial Higgs particle. A naive non-Abelian analogue involves a nonlinear group-valued scalar and derivative interactions suppressed by inverse powers of the symmetry-breaking scale; it is generally an effective field theory, not a power-counting-renormalizable substitute. Strongly coupled or composite sectors can provide other completions. A free vector mass is consistent; the central problem is obtaining the longitudinal state and its interactions in a theory with controlled ultraviolet behavior and physical unitarity.
There is a sign inconsistency in the printed model. For the ordinary cross product let . The vector triple-product identity gives . Consequently the printed has gauge curvature
Its gauge curvature cannot instead contain the printed negative quadratic term. For a noncommuting pure gauge potential for this gauge covariant derivative, whereas . Thus the printed gauge kinetic term assigns a nonzero value to a connection obtained by applying the gauge-field transformation law to the zero connection. Literally the printed action has global rotations but not the requested local triplet gauge symmetry. The cross-product convention for an adjoint covariant derivative makes the minimal repair explicit: change the gauge field strength quadratic term to a plus sign, retaining the printed gauge covariant derivative. Changing the sign in the gauge covariant derivative instead would be another consistent convention. The remaining calculation uses the first repair.
The corrected theory has local SO(3) gauge symmetry, equivalently the adjoint-field realization of the SU(2) Lie algebra; its adjoint scalar fields and gauge fields are insensitive to the center of a group of SU(2). Explicitly, and
Both and transform as triplets, so their dot products and the scalar potential are invariant. Assume , and take without loss of generality. For the minima have . Choose the scalar-field vacuum , whose stabilizer consists of rotations around the third axis: the residual gauge symmetry is SO(2), locally U(1).
In unitary gauge write , and . These are the neutral massless gauge field, two charged massive gauge fields and a real radial scalar field. Define
Substitution gives and . The entire physical-field Lagrangian density is therefore
In particular ; this directly verifies the scalar field kinetic and vector mass terms. Expanding the scalar potential gives . Comparing the quadratic terms with standard real scalar field and charged-vector mass terms yields the adjoint triplet Higgs spectrum,
This also rewrites the purely vector interactions, which are already contained in the displayed gauge field strengths rather than omitted from the theory.
The original symmetry remains unbroken at . The unique minimum is then , with three massless gauge fields and three massless real scalar field components; the quartic scalar field interaction remains. The physical degrees of freedom number . At the two broken generators supply two Goldstone bosons, eaten to give longitudinal gauge-boson polarizations of the charged vectors. The physical count is : two massive vectors, one massless vector and one radial scalar field. The scalar components eaten in unitary gauge are not additional physical particles.
For the broken phase all interactions containing the physical scalar field are
Multiplying interaction coefficients by and differentiating with respect to the external fields includes the identical-field factorials. The scalar vertices of an adjoint triplet Higgs model are
For example, the rule contains , whereas the rule contains only from its two identical scalar fields. There are no or vertices: the radial scalar field is neutral under the residual U(1). There is no derivative scalar-vector vertex in this physical spectrum in unitary gauge.

. Details.
For completeness, if the unbroken phase is chosen, its physical scalar fields are the three components , not a single radial . Expanding its gauge-covariant kinetic term gives
With all momenta incoming and Fourier transform convention , the three unbroken-phase rules are
The first rule follows by differentiating once on each possible scalar: for , the interaction is , which fixes the momentum sign. The remaining rules follow from the quadratic gauge interaction and . There are no unbroken-phase cubic scalar field Feynman vertices.
Take , with the Pauli matrices acting on the Higgs doublet. For electroweak hypercharge ,
This specifies every component of the gauge covariant derivative for the electroweak interaction. Expanding the gauge-covariant kinetic term makes its derivative, trilinear and quartic interactions explicit:
where the Pauli matrix multiplication law gives
The antisymmetric Pauli contribution vanishes because is symmetric in . Reversing the sign convention for reverses the linear gauge interactions consistently, without changing the masses.
A nonzero vacuum expectation value requires . Minimizing the Higgs potential gives . By an gauge transformation choose
in unitary gauge. The electroweak doublet gauge-boson mass matrix follows by inserting the vacuum expectation value in the gauge-covariant kinetic term:
Define the charged electroweak gauge bosons and the neutral rotation through the Weinberg angle by
with inverse and . Then
The factors differ because and are conjugate fields whereas is real. The massless photon corresponds to the unbroken Lie algebra generator , which annihilates . Thus three of the four real gauge bosons acquire mass, with . The three would-be Goldstone bosons provide their longitudinal polarizations; the remaining scalar is the Higgs boson.
Introduce the left-handed lepton doublet , with , and the right-handed singlet , with . Use the chiral projectors and in the course's convention. The minimal Standard Model has no right-handed neutrino. The gauge-invariant fermion terms are
The doublet contraction in the Yukawa interaction is a singlet, and its total hypercharge is . A bare term would fail electroweak gauge invariance. The gauge covariant derivatives above already give all the requested fermion-gauge couplings. In terms of mass eigenstates, and they become
Thus the weak charged current is chiral and the neutrino has zero electric charge. The gauge-invariant electron Yukawa mass follows from the Yukawa interaction after electroweak symmetry breaking:
Rephase to make real and positive. It gives
The electron Dirac mass is therefore compatible with the original gauge symmetry through the Higgs mechanism. The neutrino remains massless in this minimal renormalizable lepton sector.
The minima of the scalar potential
satisfy
The SU(2) group acts transitively on this three-sphere of vacua, and the stabilizer of a nonzero fundamental doublet is trivial. A global transformation may therefore choose . Because the symmetry is gauged, unitary gauge removes all three angular Goldstone bosons, leaving only the real radial Higgs mode :
Substitution into the gauge-covariant kinetic term gives
with
The interaction terms produce , , , , and the cubic and quartic non-Abelian gauge-boson vertices shown below.
The three broken generators supply the three longitudinal polarizations of the equally massive gauge bosons. No physical massless Goldstone boson remains, and because the unbroken subgroup is trivial there is no massless gauge boson either. The remaining physical spectrum has degrees of freedom, equal to the original .
After electroweak symmetry breaking, the Higgs field has vacuum expectation value . A Yukawa interaction then becomes a fermion mass with . The Higgs gauge-covariant kinetic term gives
while the radial fluctuation is the massive Higgs boson. The photon and all eight gluons correspond to unbroken gauge generators and remain massless. In the minimal renormalizable Standard Model, which has no right-handed neutrinos, the neutrinos also remain massless; adding right-handed neutrinos permits Higgs-generated Dirac masses.
The hierarchy problem is visible in the one-loop top-quark contribution to the Higgs boson mass parameter,
In a supersymmetric theory the corresponding stop loop has the opposite quadratic term. If supersymmetry is softly broken, the remaining correction is roughly
The two relevant one-loop Feynman diagrams are a Higgs two-point function with a closed top-quark loop and the analogous stop loop. Requiring the residual correction not to exceed the electroweak scale by many orders of magnitude gives the naturalness expectation , and broadly other sparticle masses, at a few TeV or below. This is an order-of-magnitude argument rather than a mass bound.
R-parity is
where is baryon number, is lepton number and is spin angular momentum. Standard Model particles have , while their superpartners have . The renormalizable R-parity-violating superpotential of the Minimal supersymmetric Standard Model is
with and .
Combining with produces proton decay through exchange of a virtual right-handed down-type squark. The tree diagram has and entering the baryon-number-violating vertex, an internal line, and the lepton-number-violating vertex emitting and a light quark. Hadronization gives
The invisible particle is an antineutrino of any family , and electric-charge conservation requires a positively charged pion. The antisymmetry of requires or .
Integrating out a squark of mass gives a dimension-six interaction with coefficient . Ignoring order-one hadronic and phase-space factors,
For and , the factor before the couplings is about --. A lifetime above years is about , so and
at order-of-magnitude accuracy. Hadronic matrix elements and flavour choices alter the numerical coefficient, not the conclusion that simultaneous baryon- and lepton-number violation is extraordinarily constrained.
The matter-parity factor is odd for every quark or lepton superfield and even for either Higgs superfield. Each term in contains an odd number of matter superfields, so R-parity forbids all four types of term. Standard MSSM Yukawa interactions contain two matter superfields and remain allowed.
Finally, the requested four-point interaction contains a squark, an antisquark, a boson and a gluon. It comes from the squark gauge-covariant kinetic term
The cross term is
because the colour and weak generators commute. With all fields incoming, its Feynman rule is
with the conventional conversion when is replaced by .
