Chlorine nitrate 2026-10-20
The reservoir species , formed from ClO and NO2 with third-body stabilization. Heterogeneous reaction with hydrogen chloride can produce molecular chlorine and nitric acid, activating chlorine while removing reactive nitrogen from the gas phase. It belongs to the wider reactive nitrogen family, not to the narrow NO-plus-NO2 definition of NOx.
Number the ring with chlorine at C1 and the methylsulfonyl group at C4. The new nitro group is at C2, equivalently C6 by the starting ring's symmetry: the product is 1-chloro-2-nitro-4-(methylsulfonyl)benzene. Both substituents favour this site. Although chlorine deactivates the ring inductively, its lone pair donation stabilizes ortho/para Wheland intermediates. The sulfone is strongly electron withdrawing and meta directing; attack ortho or para to it produces especially unfavourable cationic contributors to resonance in chemistry. C2 is ortho to chlorine and meta to sulfone, whereas C3 has the opposite, less favourable relationship.
sulfuric acid protonates nitric acid, followed by loss of water to produce the nitronium ion. A ring pi bond attacks nitrogen, giving the Wheland intermediate with the new C–N bond. deprotonation at the attacked carbon restores aromaticity. This is electrophilic aromatic substitution: the aryl chloride and the sulfone both remain attached. The formula check is . It confirms replacement of one ring hydrogen rather than chlorine, but directing effects, rather than the formula alone, establish the position.

Bulk electroneutrality gives . Each dissolved zinc ion contributes two positive elementary charges, whereas each nitrate contributes one negative charge.
This assumes complete nitric acid dissociation, only and as significant cations, and only nitrate as a significant anion. It neglects at acidic pH, other dissolved salts, zinc complexes and additional ionic nitrogen products. It is a bulk charge balance; a thin charged electrode interface does not invalidate bulk electroneutrality.
Lower winter temperatures favour formation and persistence of polar stratospheric clouds, providing particle surfaces on which reservoir chlorine can be activated, for example
These are heterogeneous surface processes; cooling changes particle abundance, adsorption, phase and reaction uptake, so a simple gas-phase Arrhenius argument is insufficient. Removal of nitric acid in sedimenting particles can also delay conversion of active chlorine back into chlorine nitrate. The relevant condensation thresholds depend on pressure and water/nitric-acid abundances, rather than a single universal temperature.
Once sunlight is present, provides active chlorine. In the chlorine monoxide dimer cycle,
The net reaction is , with chlorine regenerated. Low temperature favours formation of the ClOOCl dimer and suppresses its thermal dissociation, making photodissociation rather than thermal return of two ClO radicals more competitive. Laboratory flow experiments formed the dimer at 220–240 K and distinguished its infrared and ultraviolet signatures, supporting the chemical identity needed for this mechanism.[ref]
Colder polar conditions can prepare and sustain greater springtime ozone loss, but darkness alone does not drive the photolytic cycle. In polar night reactive precursors can accumulate; sunlight is required for rapid dimer-cycle ozone destruction. This differs from the middle-stratospheric gas-phase cooling response derived above.[ref]
An approximately isotropic wet etch produces lateral undercut as well as downward removal. In the hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid mixture, oxidation of silicon and dissolution of the oxidized material cooperate. This is not the strongly crystal-anisotropic KOH-type picture.
If the exposed horizontal surface recedes about and the local rate is isotropic, the etch front advances a comparable distance beneath each resist edge. A section through the front has rounded corners, and the silicon support under the mask narrows. The mouth can consequently widen laterally by roughly in total at the original surface level. The precise contour depends on transport, chemistry and mask integrity; the diagram represents the isotropic geometrical limit.
