Higgs decay to a fermion pair Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
A scalar Yukawa coupling gives
above threshold. The fermion spin sum provides the additional factor of momentum squared that turns the phase-space threshold factor into its third power. The color multiplicity in a decay width is for a quark pair and one for a lepton pair.
Use the current convention in the question, whose vertex prefactor is . The neutral-current vector and axial couplings are then
For a charged lepton, , , giving
For an active neutrino, , , so . The right-handed weak singlet contribution is purely vectorlike in the charge term; combining it with the left-handed contribution gives precisely this Dirac-current form. These coefficients would be halved if the vertex prefactor were instead.
Let be the Z boson momentum and the outgoing massless lepton momenta. The decay amplitude is
Use the fermion spin sums and . Anticommutation of with the Dirac gamma matrices gives the symmetric part of the trace,
The vector-axial cross term is antisymmetric in , and hence drops out of the massive vector polarization sum. The massless equations also give : in the symmetric part, the first two contractions sum to , canceling the last; the antisymmetric term vanishes because . The longitudinal term therefore makes no contribution.
Since , contraction with gives . Thus the massless fermion Z decay spin sum, including all three initial polarizations, is
To use this fully summed expression for the decay width of one unpolarized Z boson, apply the massive-vector spin average, dividing by three. The width of each fixed polarization is the same after integration over all directions, so that procedure also gives the physical single-particle width. Omitting the division would sum the widths of three initial states.
For two massless distinguishable final particles, the two-body Lorentz-invariant phase space is
Consequently
The tree-level electroweak symmetry breaking relation is . Combining it with the Fermi constant normalization gives
For an active neutrino, the vertex itself projects out inactive chiralities, so no additional helicity factor is needed. This is the tree-level massless leptonic Z decay width; lepton masses and radiative corrections have been excluded.
Take metric and write . The outgoing electron and antineutrino momenta are and . Up to an irrelevant overall phase, the amplitude is
A fermion spin sum gives
Anticommuting through the massless momentum and gamma matrix, and using , reduces the trace to twice the four-gamma trace minus twice its counterpart. In particular its symmetric part is
The epsilon-tensor part is antisymmetric and contributes neither to the unpolarized polarization sum nor to the real linear polarization used below. There is no extra factor for selecting the neutrino helicity: the chiral vertex has already done so.
The external massless equations imply for , so . With , averaging over the three initial spin states gives
Indeed . This is a massive-vector spin average, not an average over the final spins.
In the rest frame, eliminating the momentum delta function and integrating the remaining radial delta function reduces the two-body Lorentz-invariant phase space to . Therefore
This derives the massless leptonic W decay width without invoking a precomputed decay formula.
For the specified polarization there is no initial spin average. Put , and . The contraction selects
It follows that
Here . The total rate agrees with the spin-averaged result, but its normalized polar distribution is instead of the isotropic unpolarized distribution. This is polarized massless leptonic W decay.
The derivative convention uses hypercharge Y with . For each lepton family , the left-handed fields form an SU(2) doublet , with . Their weak isospin values are and their electric charges are . The right-handed charged lepton is an SU(2) singlet, with , and charge . The minimal model used here has no right-handed neutrino. A sterile right-handed neutrino, if added as a singlet with , would have no charged weak current interaction. Antiparticles carry the conjugate representations and opposite electric charges.
Expanding supplies . The off-diagonal entries of are and . With the chiral projector , one has . Thus the two W boson interactions are
For quarks, separate rotations diagonalize the up-type and down-type mass terms. If their left-handed rotations are and , the charged interaction contains the CKM matrix :
There is an implicit sum over color charge. This quark mixing permits transitions between different families, rather than just the paired fields in a single doublet.
Let and . At momenta much smaller than , neglect derivatives in the heavy W boson equation. Its mass and source terms can be completed to a square:
This explicitly performs integrating out a charged vector boson. The resulting Fermi interaction is
The omitted terms contain derivatives and are relatively suppressed by momentum squared divided by .
For the leptonic pion decay, Lorentz covariance restricts a vacuum-to-spin-zero current matrix element to a constant times . In the rest frame, rotations eliminate the spatial components. Under parity, the temporal vector current is even, whereas the vacuum is even and the pion is odd, so its temporal matrix element equals its negative and vanishes. The temporal axial current is odd and is allowed. This proves the vacuum-to-pseudoscalar current selection rule, rather than merely assuming an axial current. Define the pion decay constant by
Then the vector-minus-axial charged weak current has matrix element , up to an irrelevant overall phase convention. Consequently the scattering amplitude for the decay can be written
Use , the momentum-space Dirac equation , and for a massless neutrino. Since , the neutrino contribution vanishes, leaving
The fermion spin sum is, using the supplied gamma matrix trace identities,
Here , , and . The mass term in the trace vanishes; anticommuting reduces the remaining trace to twice . It follows that
Using two-body decay phase space, with final momentum magnitude , gives the leptonic pseudoscalar decay width
Thus the requested factor is already present in the squared amplitude, and the phase space supplies one more threshold factor.
The physical explanation is helicity suppression. In the pion rest frame the two momenta are opposite. The massless antineutrino has positive helicity; zero total angular momentum would require the electron to have positive helicity too. The charged weak current instead creates a left-chiral electron, whose helicity is negative when its mass vanishes. A nonzero electron mass admits the required opposite helicity with an amplitude proportional to . The decay amplitude vanishes for , and the rate is suppressed by .
Use the Feynman vertex for the scalar Yukawa coupling, the internal scalar propagator , incoming factors and outgoing Dirac adjoints . Define as the coefficient in the connected S-matrix element after removing its overall momentum-conserving Dirac delta function. A direct pairing contributes
The crossed pairing interchanges the identical outgoing fermions and therefore has a relative fermionic sign of minus. With and , the result is
It changes sign under exchange of the two outgoing momenta and spin labels, as required for identical fermions. No fermion spin sum or identical-particle phase-space factor belongs in this amplitude; those enter a relativistic scattering cross-section calculation.
The middle panel shows the Feynman diagram for the leptonic W boson decay. With the charged-current Lagrangian density sign in the question, its vertex Feynman rule is
An overall field-phase convention can change the overall amplitude sign but cannot change the decay width. With the standard Dirac field current ordering, the amplitude is
The unusual order of barred fields in the printed description should be interpreted as this physical weak charged current matrix element.
For massless final fermions, the fermion spin sums are and . The massive-vector spin average divides by three. Thus
with the chiral trace
Anticommuting through the two following gamma matrices and using gives its symmetric part
Its remaining part is an antisymmetric epsilon tensor from the gamma matrix trace identities; it vanishes against the symmetric polarization tensor . Direct contraction gives and
Hence
No additional averaging over hypothetical right-handed neutrino states is appropriate: the chiral projector already enforces the physical helicity coupling.
On shell, , and , so and . The squared matrix element reduces to . In the parent rest frame, integrate the spatial momentum delta first in two-body Lorentz-invariant phase space. The remaining radial integral is
Consequently the massless leptonic W decay width is
Lepton universality gives in the same massless approximation. The muon and tau lepton masses produce small corrections if retained.
With an identity CKM matrix, the allowed quark channels are and . The corresponding third-generation channel is closed by the top threshold. Each open channel has three orthogonal matching-color final states, so the color multiplicity in a decay width gives . There is no initial color average because the W boson is colorless. The tree-level W branching fractions are therefore:
Final channelPartial widthBranching fraction, rounded
The rounded percentages sum to 99% because of rounding. The exact fractions sum to one, with total leptonic fraction and hadronic fraction . The total decay width is
As an illustrative numerical estimate, taking and gives , each open quark width and . These are tree-level model estimates with the stated illustrative inputs, not a fit to a measured width. Strong radiative corrections increase the inclusive quark widths.
The produced quark and antiquark radiate gluons, generating a parton shower. As their virtualities fall towards the strong-interaction scale, perturbation theory gives way to hadronization: confinement converts the colored partons into color-neutral hadrons, typically seen as two particle jets, with additional radiation sometimes producing resolved extra jets. Unstable hadrons subsequently decay; the primary quarks are not observed as free particles.
Including the CKM matrix, the charged current couples an accessible up-type flavour to every kinematically accessible down-type flavour . Therefore
The sums over remain by row unitarity, so the massless tree-level total remains . Quark mixing redistributes the hadronic branching fractions; it does not create a new total color factor. If a family is above threshold, only its accessible channels enter, and the unitarity sum must not be applied to an incomplete set of final flavours.
For completeness, CKM parameter counting starts with real degrees of freedom of an unitary matrix. This follows by counting real entries and independent Hermitian constraints in . The real-orthogonal subclass has mixing angles; the remaining parameters can be viewed as phases. Rephasing each up-type and down-type mass eigenfield changes by . Of the phases, the common phase does nothing, so are removable. Thus
For three generic nondegenerate families this is three angles and one CP-violating phase. Degenerate masses can allow additional changes of basis and reduce the count.
The last panel of the preceding process figure shows deep inelastic scattering through a virtual photon. The blob represents the electromagnetic hadronic tensor response, with all final hadronic states included. With charges factored into and the hadronic current as in the question, a suitable scattering amplitude, up to an irrelevant overall phase, is
The electron fermion spin sum, before averaging the two initial spin states, gives the following normalization of the leptonic tensor:
The initial electron spin average is a separate factor . Equivalently one can absorb it into a tensor , but the prefactor in the requested formula uses the unaveraged trace . The massless Dirac equations imply , the relevant Ward identity.
In the target rest frame the incident flux is . This remains valid for a massive target because the electron is massless: the general flux reduces to that expression. The outgoing electron contributes , and the inclusive final-state sum is . Including the electron spin average therefore gives
The implicit hadron spin average in must not be inserted a second time.
For an unpolarized target, Lorentz invariance permits tensor structures formed from , and the metric. Hermiticity relates the two index orders. The electromagnetic response is parity even, excluding the pseudotensor . A possible ordinary antisymmetric term is excluded by current conservation. The symmetric part initially has four structures, , , and . Imposing both current-conservation conditions leaves the transverse decomposition of an unpolarized hadronic tensor:
For example, contracting into the first structure gives in the printed parametrization, and contracting into either parenthesis gives or . Since the two independent deep-inelastic structure functions are not generally linked by symmetry, transversality requires
There are only two invariant variables once is fixed; they may be chosen as and Bjorken x .
Now make the leading massless collinear parton approximation. In the hard parton calculation, use a lightlike collinear reference for , neglecting target-mass effects of relative order as well as quark masses. Literally combining a massive with an exactly massless constituent momentum would be inconsistent. The exact rest-frame flux derived above does not require this approximation; it is the following partonic response that does.
Let and . Strip the quark charge out of the current, since its square is already the factor in the parton convolution. Averaging the initial quark spin and summing the final spin gives the spin-averaged electromagnetic parton tensor
The spatial momentum delta fixes . The remaining one-particle Lorentz-invariant phase space, together with in the definition, supplies
Since and , the full parton response is
Terms with a free index vanish when contracted with the conserved leptonic tensor. Thus the part of contributing to the cross-section is
where denotes equality in that contraction, rather than an equality of the full tensors. The omitted terms are necessary for the full hadronic tensor to be transverse; the wording about contributing terms in the PDF is important here.
To prove the delta identity with the correct Jacobian, set . On physical support and . Factoring gives the positive-energy on-shell delta function identity
This is restricted to the positive-energy branch; the other root must not be included. Using the spatial momentum constraint and in the leading hard approximation,
The Dirac delta function change of variable therefore gives the parton on-shell delta identity
Here . This is the actual printed identity: the converted TeX's final is a transcription error. If target mass is formally retained in the delta argument, it becomes , so the stated simple root and Jacobian no longer apply.
Let . The parton integral collapses at , giving
The transverse decomposition of an unpolarized hadronic tensor, in the same contraction, is . Comparing the two independent structures yields
This derives the Callan-Gross relation from the spin-one-half trace and on-shell constraint. Antiquarks give the same symmetric response and therefore the sum . The result applies at leading order in the massless parton model; target masses, intrinsic transverse momentum and Quantum chromodynamics radiative effects can generate a nonzero longitudinal deep-inelastic structure function and modify the relation.
Use natural units and the Minkowski metric , and work at tree level with on-shell final particles. Write and, for a final particle of mass , . In the Higgs boson rest frame the Lorentz-invariant phase-space measure reduces to
To obtain this, integrate the momentum delta function to set ; the energy delta function is , whose radial Jacobian is . Hence for an angle-independent final-state spin sum ,
There is no initial-state spin average for a scalar, and neither charged-particle pair here requires an identical-particle factor of .
For Higgs decay to two W bosons, the Feynman vertex gives , up to an overall phase. Contracting the two massive vector polarization sums gives
The constant 2 follows from in the contraction, with the last term coming from the two momentum projectors. Putting , the full massive result is
The on-shell two-body width is zero below this threshold; decays through off-shell W bosons into more particles are different channels.
For Higgs decay to a fermion pair, put . The amplitude is , up to an overall phase and a color Kronecker delta. The fermion spin sums and gamma-matrix trace give
The color multiplicity in a decay width is : only a quark and antiquark with matching colors contribute, so the factor is three rather than nine. Therefore
Again the on-shell two-body width is zero below threshold. This is a partonic tree-level answer with every mass retained; hadronization is outside the specified calculation.
The W boson channel dominates for large within the tree-level comparison. The widths scale as and , respectively, and
The enhancement comes from longitudinal polarization of a massive vector boson: its polarization vector grows as momentum divided by . Thus the longitudinal pair survives the apparently small factor in the interaction. At masses so large that the scalar sector is strongly coupled, the tree-level extrapolation itself needs corrections.
For an unpolarized initial fermion, average over its two spin states and sum over the unobserved final spin:
The initial scalar has only one spin state. One can evaluate this sum directly from normalized Dirac spinors, or use consistent fermion spin sums to express it as a trace. It is the squared sum of both tree scattering amplitudes, not the sum of their separate squares.
The relativistic scattering cross-section is obtained by integrating the Lorentz-invariant phase-space measure and dividing by the invariant flux factor:
There is no identical-final-particle factor, because the outgoing scalar and fermion are distinct. All energies are positive, with and .
Equivalently, in the centre-of-momentum frame set . Integrating the energy delta function in the relativistic two-body phase space gives
For this elastic process , so integrate over the full solid angle. This supplies the requested prescription without evaluating the angular integral.
The strong-interaction matrix element between two spin-zero pseudoscalar mesons has only and available. The product of the two intrinsic parities is positive. An axial current would require a pseudovector constructed from these momenta, but an expression involving the Levi-Civita symbol needs three independent four-vectors and therefore vanishes. This is a consequence of parity conservation in the hadronic matrix element, not of parity conservation in the weak interaction. The vector current can have the two independent structures and . Its coefficients are Lorentz scalars; with and fixed, their only varying invariant is . Hence
These are the pseudoscalar-to-pseudoscalar form factors. With relativistically normalized states they are dimensionless. The vanishing axial matrix element and this decomposition explain the two equalities separately.
Write and for the outgoing electron and antineutrino momenta. From the Fermi interaction, an invariant scattering amplitude, up to an irrelevant overall sign or phase, is
The CKM matrix element multiplies the quark current in the convention of this interaction. Let . For massless leptons, the massless Dirac equation and chirality matrix anticommutation give
In the second term move through the chiral projector before applying . Since , this transverse massless leptonic current gives
The disappearance of uses the massless approximation; for a massive charged lepton its contraction is proportional to the lepton mass.
Use the fermion spin sum and the supplied gamma matrix trace identities. The symmetric part of the leptonic tensor is
The Levi-Civita symbol term is antisymmetric and drops out when contracted with . Thus
There is no initial-spin average because the kaon is spinless. For the integrated massless leptonic tensor, keep every factor of explicit and define the unnormalized two-lepton Lorentz-invariant phase space
The leptons are massless, so . Its trace is . Therefore
The three Lorentz-invariant phase-space measures and their momentum delta function contribute , in addition to in the decay rate. Combining them with the spin sum gives
This massless semileptonic pseudoscalar decay rate uses a two-lepton integral over future-timelike and the pion integral is restricted to the physically allowed region. The null endpoint follows by continuity. The coefficient has mass dimension , so the complete expression has mass dimension one, as a decay rate must in natural units.
In the kaon centre-of-momentum frame, put and . Then
The dimensionally consistent Källén function is
The pion-only mass term must have fourth power: the second power printed in the PDF is dimensionally inconsistent. This repair also follows directly from squaring . Angular integration and the change of variable give
where the negative sign reverses the endpoints. Combining this with the bracket yields
Thus . The lower limit is the minimum invariant mass of two massless leptons; at the upper limit the pion is at rest. The coefficient has mass dimension , while has dimension eight. The Källén function also shows why the differential decay rate vanishes at zero pion momentum.
Flavour issue in the printed effective interaction. The displayed charged-current factor uses an Electron field even for the muon-neutrino term. Taken literally, this introduces an extra charged-current interaction, contradicting the Standard Model diagrams in part (a). In the Standard Model that factor uses the charged lepton of the same flavour; for Electron scattering the charged-current contribution is therefore present only for . The weak flavour selection in neutrino-electron scattering fixes the physically consistent assignment used below. The literal printed consequence is given afterwards, so the discrepancy is explicit.
At leading order in the Electron mass and in the four-fermion regime, define . The weak neutral current yields the scattering amplitude
An overall amplitude phase has no observable effect. The Fermi interaction is valid when the exchanged invariants are small compared with the squared weak-boson masses.
Average over the two initial Electron spin states, and sum over final spins. There is no averaging over a sterile right-handed incoming neutrino. Using the fermion spin sum, the averaged square is
To display the trace contraction, define
The supplied gamma matrix trace identities give the two tensors and . Symmetric-antisymmetric mixed contractions vanish. Set and . The remaining contractions are and , using the stated negative epsilon-contraction sign. Their sum gives
The massless Mandelstam variables satisfy , and the two products are and , respectively. Therefore
In the centre-of-momentum frame, momentum conservation gives . If is the angle cosine between and , then . The massless two-body Lorentz-invariant phase space is , while the flux is . Thus
Integrate and :
Consequently the intended coefficients are
This is the massless neutrino-electron contact cross-section.
For completeness, the literal printed muon-neutrino charged-current term would instead shift both couplings by one, exactly as in part (c):
For arbitrary real , its linear terms cannot be represented by the requested quadratic form with coupling-independent constants. The Standard Model result and the literal printed interaction are not the same problem.
The tree-level Feynman diagram contains one weak charged current vertex. Fermion arrows point along fermion-number flow, so the outgoing antiquark arrow points toward the vertex.
Figure 1.
Tree-level W-plus decay into an outgoing quark and antiquark with fermion-flow arrows
. Details.
For one fixed matching color, the scattering amplitude is
An overall phase from the vertex has no effect on the width. The fermion spin sums give , in the massless approximation. For the three initial polarizations, use a spin average of . The gamma matrix trace identities give
The sign of the last term follows the PDF's convention and does not affect this decay: the polarization sum is symmetric. Since and the daughter masses vanish, and . Therefore
In the rest frame, the two-body Lorentz-invariant phase space integrates to : after the spatial delta function sets , its radial delta function fixes . Explicitly,
The decay formula consequently gives
This is the printed expression, interpreted for one color. For a physical quark-flavor channel there are three orthogonal final color states. Their probabilities add; no initial color average is present for a colorless W boson. Thus
The PDF's formula omits this color multiplicity if read as the ordinary inclusive flavor width. It is also the familiar normalization for a colorless lepton channel.
The six physically accessible quark combinations are . A real on-shell W boson cannot produce a top quark; the massless approximation is applied to the accessible daughters and does not open a physically forbidden top channel. CKM matrix unitarity gives . Therefore the physical color-summed hadronic width at this order is
If the printed one-color convention is retained for every channel, its sum is instead . In the artificial theory where all three up-type flavors, including the top, are kinematically massless, there would be nine channels and the physical sum would be ; that is not the on-shell Standard Model channel list.
Use metric , and relativistically normalized external spinors. The Fermi interaction gives
up to an irrelevant phase. The fermion spin sums replace and by the slashed massless momenta. Write . The gamma matrix trace identities yield
The symmetric-antisymmetric mixed contractions vanish. The symmetric contraction is , while the two epsilon tensors contract to . Including and the initial-spin average therefore gives
The singlet color charge contractions have net factor one after summing final colours and averaging initial color charge states. Thus this is also the colour-averaged partonic result; no extra factor three is required.
In the centre-of-momentum frame, let . The Mandelstam variables satisfy and , giving and . Hence
The massless invariant flux factor is and , so the weak charged-current quark scattering cross-section is
For a purely left-handed weak charged current, , , this reduces to , fixing the sign of the forward term. Purely right-handed weak charged currents at both vertices have the same unpolarized angular law. The factorization convention for could be rescaled by a common numerical factor; the displayed product fixes the normalization.
At this order there is one annihilation tree-level Feynman diagram. The squared-amplitude diagram is its product with its complex conjugate, with the same external momenta and spin labels in both factors:
 e-(p,s) --->\          /---> mu-(p',s')
             o ~~~~~~ o
 e+(q,r) <---/ \<--- mu+(q',r')

                     times

 e-(p,s) --->\          /---> mu-(p',s')
             o ~~~~~~ o *
 e+(q,r) <---/ \<--- mu+(q',r')
A wavy line is the virtual photon; the arrows show fermion-number flow. The star means complex conjugation of the entire second graph, including its external spinors. This represents for fixed spins, without adding a new physical loop to the amplitude.
For the spin sum in part (iv), identify each external spin label between the two copies and sum it. The fermion spin sum sews each spinor chain into a gamma-matrix trace. The two incoming unpolarized spin states are then handled by a spin average, giving the factor . In particular, the diagrammatic contraction becomes
First derive the needed gamma-matrix traces directly from the Clifford algebra. The cyclic property of the trace gives
so . For , move successively through the other three matrices and cycle the final term back to the front:
Therefore
These are all the trace identities required.
For massless external Dirac spinors, the fermion spin sums are and . With the initial spin average, part (iii) becomes a contraction of
Their contraction is
The massless Mandelstam variables give and , hence
In the center of mass frame each particle has energy , and
Substitution gives the concise angular answer:
Average over the two initial electron spins and two initial photon polarizations, and sum over the final ones. The supplied fermion spin sum and photon polarization sum turn the result into gamma-matrix traces. The Clifford algebra implies
by anticommuting the outside matrix through the product. Together with
the two channel squares reduce, at , to and ; the remaining cross terms cancel. Thus, in terms of the Mandelstam variables,
Physical Compton kinematics has and , so the displayed expression is nonnegative.
A Fierz rearrangement puts the charged-current operator in the same current ordering as the neutral-current operator. Accounting for the interchange of fermionic fields, the combined amplitude is
Sum over final spins and average over the initial electron spin. The fermion spin sum and gamma-matrix trace identities give
For massless two-body scattering in the centre-of-momentum frame, and . Integrating therefore yields
Consequently
For a resting W boson with real spatial polarization vector along , the fermion spin sum gives for massless charged lepton and antineutrino momenta. The two-body Lorentz-invariant phase space gives the displayed angular decay rate. Since , the integrated width is , equal to the unpolarized width. The massive-vector spin average changes the angular distribution, not the total width. No initial spin average is taken for a specified pure polarization.
Squared-amplitude diagram 2026-10-05
A squared-amplitude diagram consists of an amplitude graph and its complex-conjugate graph, with matching external states. Summing an external fermion spin sews the associated spinor indices using a fermion spin sum. The resulting closed spinor chains become gamma-matrix traces. This notation represents probabilities and must be distinguished from adding another physical interaction loop to the amplitude.
