For a paraxial orbit , where is transverse momentum and longitudinal momentum. Acceleration mainly increases , so a given transverse kick produces a smaller angular deviation. In an ideal matched accelerator without scattering or radiation, the conserved transverse canonical phase-space area becomes a smaller area in the coordinates . This is adiabatic damping of geometric emittance, not loss of canonical phase-space volume.
The invariant normalized emittance is
Here is speed in units of , distinct from the lattice beta function. Neglecting dilution mechanisms, each acceleration stage thus supplies a beam with smaller angular spread and geometric emittance for injection into the next stage.
A chain of increasingly energetic particle accelerators lets each ring operate over a manageable range of magnetic rigidity and radio-frequency settings. It also avoids injecting a large-emittance low-energy beam directly into the small-aperture high-field main ring. Higher injection energy reduces space-charge effects and improves capture and transmission. Emittance dilution, mismatching and collective instabilities can oppose the ideal damping; acceleration alone does not reduce normalized emittance.
Take and . Then while . Hence
The helicity operator is for momentum along . It gives
The positive-helicity state becomes entirely right chiral, while the negative-helicity state becomes entirely left chiral. The suppressed opposite-chirality amplitude is of relative order ; at finite mass chirality is not the same as helicity. If , helicity is measured along the reversed momentum and the labels of the two spin-axis states interchange.
Use the leading-order parton model: scatter incoherently from an approximately on-shell collinear quark carrying nucleon momentum fraction , neglect quark and lepton masses, use an unpolarized target, and neglect nuclear binding and higher-twist corrections. The condition suppresses target-mass effects, while permits the local Fermi interaction instead of the full W propagator. CKM-weighted accessible final flavours are approximated by their leading light-quark sums. The struck-quark centre-of-mass energy is , with .
A neutrino scatters through or , and through the corresponding crossed antiquark channels such as . The chiral charged current makes the massless quark contribution independent of and the antiquark contribution proportional to . The scattering probability is weighted by the parton distribution functions; the explicit factor comes from . In the usual convention is a number probability density, while is a momentum density. Approximate Bjorken scaling leaves mainly dependence; QCD evolution adds a logarithmic dependence.
The printed proton-density formula is not an isoscalar formula in the standard PDF convention. For a proton, neglecting incoming charm and taking accessible CKM sums as unity, the conventional leading-order result is
For an isoscalar target per nucleon, average proton and neutron and use charge symmetry of nucleon parton distributions: , , . This gives
The standard normalization follows equivalently by inserting and into the charged-current structure-function formula.[ref]
A concrete discrepancy remains even with a simple valence model: take , and all sea densities zero. The correctly averaged isoscalar bracket is , while the printed bracket is only with the same prefactor. Thus the intended helicity and dependence can be explained, but the literal printed isoscalar claim cannot be derived. If the symbols were instead defined as momentum densities, the extra explicit would also need removal.
For the stationary target, . The invariant definition immediately gives
No massless approximation is needed for this laboratory identity when binding and target recoil conventions are neglected.
For the angular relation, specify the neutrino-parton centre-of-momentum frame and neglect masses there. The incoming and outgoing leptons then each have energy . Their momentum transfer satisfies
Since and , cancellation gives
This identifies the antiquark weight with the corresponding squared angular factor. The relevant massless condition is sufficient energy in the lepton-parton subprocess; alone does not control every endpoint configuration.
The frame qualifier matters: the complete neutrino-nucleon centre-of-mass final state contains a variable-mass hadronic system. In that frame, still neglecting masses but retaining , direct two-body kinematics for gives instead
For example and give , not . Thus the simple angle-only relation implicitly uses the partonic frame.
For a valence-dominated isoscalar target, . A left-chiral incident neutrino has unsuppressed scattering on a left-chiral quark and the weight for a right-chiral quark. Summing the up and down contributions yields
where and . The common normalization here uses the conventional Fermi coupling and PDFs in a; the requested shape is independent of an overall normalization convention.
Put . With , , and ,
so
Fit the relative constant and components to determine their coupling ratio, or use the NC-to-CC cross-section ratio to constrain the absolute combination. In this valence limit, integrating over gives
The same valence momentum integral cancels between numerator and denominator. Experimentally, NC events have hadronic activity without the charged-current outgoing muon; known fluxes or CC normalization, muon identification and acceptance corrections are needed. Sea-quark contributions, charm thresholds, QCD corrections and departures from isoscalarity must be included for a precision weak-mixing-angle measurement.
In a relativistic two-body decay, four-momentum conservation in the parent's rest frame requires and
For fixed daughter masses, this fixes a unique , independent of direction. In the Lorentz-invariant phase space integral, the Dirac delta distribution enforcing conservation of energy therefore performs the radial momentum integration. Only the solid angle remains to be integrated; the resulting can be taken outside that integral, even if the matrix element depends strongly on direction.
For three or more final particles, four-momentum conservation generally leaves continuously variable daughter energies and momenta, so the decay rate includes integrations over them, or equivalently over independent invariant masses in a Dalitz plot. Integrating over a variable daughter invariant mass is also necessary when an unstable daughter is treated with a finite decay width rather than a fixed mass.
At an electron-positron collider tuned to the charmonium resonance, select the mixed leptonic tau lepton decays
and their charge conjugates. Require exactly two well-reconstructed oppositely charged tracks, one identified electron and one identified muon, little extra visible activity, visible energy below the beam total, and significant missing momentum pointing into the instrumented region. The multiple neutrinos prevent full reconstruction of each tau lepton, but the known initial four-momentum, lepton spectra and missing energy support a statistical signal extraction. Off-resonance data constrain nonresonant electron-positron annihilation into a tau lepton pair; that continuum is present at both beam energies.[ref]
A resonant muon pair is one possible detector background: one muon can be misidentified as an electron, while radiation escaping along the beam or a badly measured track produces apparent missing energy. Particle-identification requirements and rejection of almost back-to-back tracks near the beam momentum suppress it. This background needs detector mismeasurement; an ideal measurement would distinguish it.
Above the open-charm threshold, supplies an additional resonant background. Semileptonic decays of the two D mesons can give an electron, a muon and neutrinos; unreconstructed hadrons let some events pass the selection. This on-shell D meson-pair background is kinematically forbidden at .
With the four-momenta in a, , , and . Thus the measured beam energy , scattered electron energy and scattering angle determine
Here measures the spacelike momentum transfer, is the fractional energy transfer, and the Bjorken scaling variable is the struck parton's longitudinal momentum fraction in the leading collinear description. The hadronic invariant mass satisfies ; large and select deep inelastic scattering.
A beam spectrometer measures before a thin stationary hydrogen target. Tracking layers on both sides of a magnetic spectrometer measure the outgoing electron direction, charge and curvature; an electromagnetic calorimeter measures its energy. Matching the track to its particle shower, with downstream muon rejection where useful, separates the scattered electron from hadronic tracks. A downstream hadronic detector measures the hadronic activity and supports event-quality checks. The sketch in a shows these separate measurements.
The scattered electron provides a clean, single-particle reconstruction. Reconstructing the entire hadronic system requires summing many charged and neutral fragments, correcting unequal particle calorimeter response and losses through beam holes, and sometimes accounting for escaping neutrinos. Thus the leptonic definition is experimentally convenient. It is not a fundamental requirement of Lorentz invariance: exact reconstruction of gives the same , and hadronic or combined reconstructions can be preferable in some kinematic regions.
A mass eigenstate has a definite neutrino mass and acquires a definite propagation phase at fixed momentum. An interaction eigenstate is the neutrino flavor selected by a weak charged current: is produced or detected together with an electron, and together with a muon. The two bases are related by a unitary matrix, here the real rotation matrix .
Inverting the supplied transformation gives and , where , . If , these bases coincide: each produced neutrino flavor propagates as one mass eigenstate, and there is no neutrino oscillation, even if the two masses differ. Conversely, equal masses also prevent vacuum neutrino oscillation, even when a nonzero basis-rotation angle is written down.
For a massless fermion, chirality is fixed by helicity. For a massless antifermion, the field-chirality label is opposite to its physical helicity: a left-chiral field creates negative-helicity particles and positive-helicity antiparticles. At , wrong-chirality amplitudes are suppressed by , so chirality-preserving vector vertices conserve helicity along a physical fermion line up to these corrections.
For electron-positron annihilation into a muon pair through a vector mediator, each annihilating or created pair therefore has opposite physical helicities. Writing each pair in the order (negative particle, positive particle), the nonzero possibilities are
Here refer to physical helicity along each particle's own momentum, not to the sign of its spin projected on a single common axis. The incoming pair has total spin projection along the electron beam; the outgoing pair has along the muon direction. Same-helicity pairs vanish in the strictly massless vector-current limit.
There is one tree-level Feynman diagram: the distinguishable electron and muon exchange a photon in the channel. There is no identical-particle exchange diagram.
Multiplying the external Dirac spinors, the two Feynman vertices and the photon propagator gives
The overall phase of this scattering amplitude is convention dependent. Four external spin labels with two choices each give possible configurations before taking a limit. For , the vector QED interaction preserves fermion chirality, which becomes helicity for each external particle. Thus the surviving configurations, written as , are
Here specify helicity along each particle's own momentum. The other configurations require at least one mass-suppressed flip and vanish in the strictly massless limit.
The sagitta is the maximum distance between the circular track and its chord. The perpendicular bisector of a chord of length gives a right triangle with hypotenuse and sides and . Hence
At fixed electric charge, magnetic field and lever arm, , so differentiation and propagation of uncertainty give
Thus a fixed spatial measurement uncertainty produces a relative momentum uncertainty growing linearly with . If momentum is expressed in , in tesla, in metres and , restore the usual conversion .
The Lorentz force is . Because it is perpendicular to the velocity, it changes the direction of momentum without changing its magnitude. For a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field, the radius of curvature is . Over the short track, the bending angle is . Equivalently, integrate the force for a time while neglecting the small rotation in its direction. The magnitude of the acquired momentum component perpendicular to the incident direction is
Its direction follows ; a signed component can therefore be written after fixing an oriented bending axis. Chord length and arc length agree at this order in .
The magnetic bending angle is . For a momentum estimate based on this angle, propagation of uncertainty gives . Comparing the total Multiple Coulomb scattering angle with the bend therefore gives the commonly intended characteristic estimate
Its independence of is the key result for relativistic particles: the scattering angle and magnetic bend both scale as .
A precise standard deviation requires specifying how tracks are measured. If is obtained from independently measured entrance and exit directions and all the material lies between them, the bending-plane projected root mean square is . For that estimator the equality is
A three-point sagitta fit weights scatter positions differently again. The paper does not specify these measurement details, so it fixes the scaling and characteristic estimate, but not one universal geometric coefficient for all track fits.
At high momentum, the fixed spatial measurement uncertainty dominates because ii grows as . At lower, still relativistic momentum, Multiple Coulomb scattering dominates the relative uncertainty, which approaches the approximately constant term in iv. Below the relativistic regime the additional velocity dependence of scattering must also be included.
Three complementary improvements are: increase and the tracking lever arm to enlarge the magnetic bend; improve hit-position resolution and alignment to reduce ; and reduce passive material and detector-layer thickness to reduce and hence Multiple Coulomb scattering. For independent contributions one commonly writes
where is the scattering term for the specified material distribution and track estimator.
The transition from phlogiston theory to an oxygen theory of combustion, and the transition from Newtonian mechanics to special relativity, support a restricted account of incommensurability. They show changes in conceptual organization and standards of explanation. They do not establish that rival scientists cannot communicate, compare results or give reasons for preferring a new account.
In the chemical case, a common phlogistic treatment makes a metal a calx combined with phlogiston, so calcination removes the principle responsible for its metallic character. Antoine Lavoisier's treatment reverses the decomposition: a metal combines with part of the air to form the calx. In a closed vessel, the calx's gain in mass must be understood together with what happens to the remaining gas. The mercury-and-air investigation and the recovery of the gas from the calx organize these operations into a different account of composition. This is a change in the relations between elements, compounds and chemical processes, not merely a new name for an unchanged substance.[ref]
For Thomas Kuhn, a translation which replaces every occurrence of phlogiston with one modern substance fails to preserve those interconnected roles. Yet historians can learn the earlier vocabulary and reconstruct the relevant experiments. His later account explicitly distinguishes interpretation and language-learning from a word-for-word translation into a fixed successor vocabulary. Local untranslatability does not imply that every term or observation is inaccessible to the other community.[ref]
The mechanical example concerns the reorganization of space, time and motion. In special relativity, distant simultaneity depends on an inertial frame and a specified clock-synchronization procedure. Newtonian mechanics instead uses a common time independent of inertial motion. This affects more than numerical corrections to one law: it changes which events are simultaneous and how velocity and momentum are related.[ref]
Nevertheless, quantitative comparison is possible. For an invariant rest mass ,
Here is the speed of light and the Lorentz factor. At , the respective momenta are and , a directly comparable difference. For , the leading agreement explains an important domain of earlier success. It would be inaccurate to claim that modern special relativity invariably makes mass velocity-dependent: invariant rest mass remains invariant in this convention.
These examples therefore support conceptual discontinuity without total evidential isolation. Some explanatory aims and classifications change; many preparations, measurements and quantitative relations remain comparable. No unique algorithm follows from shared values such as accuracy and scope, but the absence of such an algorithm is weaker than the absence of rational assessment. The most defensible Kuhnian conclusion is local and historical: comparison can require learning a conceptual system, while still permitting criticism of both systems and empirically warranted preference between them.
The analytic-synthetic distinction is proposed as a distinction between kinds of truth, not as an empirical discovery about a particular substance or force. An analytic truth is supposed to hold through meaning and logic; a synthetic truth depends additionally on how the world is. The absence of a laboratory discovery establishing that division neither automatically refutes it nor grants it immunity from criticism. Its status depends on whether a clear and useful distinction can be specified.
Consider an explicitly defined language. Let mean bachelor, unmarried, and admit the meaning postulate
Every interpretation admitted by that rule makes the sentence true. This is a precise relative notion of analyticity: the rule helps determine what the symbols mean. By contrast, a claim about how many people satisfy requires information about the population. The latter is not made true merely by adopting a vocabulary. Rudolf Carnap's meaning postulates explain how a chosen language can impose such semantic constraints without reducing every analytic sentence to a visible repetition of its subject.[ref]
Two further distinctions must be kept separate. Analyticity concerns meaning and truth conditions; knowing something independently of a particular empirical investigation concerns justification. Necessity concerns whether it could have been otherwise. Treating these as interchangeable would assume rather than establish the most controversial part of the account. Even a conventional choice of language can generate nontrivial consequences whose derivation requires considerable reasoning.
Willard Van Orman Quine challenges a sharp, framework-independent boundary. An explanation of analyticity by synonymy may presuppose analyticity when explaining what counts as genuine synonymy. A dictionary records accepted usage; it does not independently establish why substitution preserves truth by meaning alone. The wider argument rejects the assumption that each empirical sentence confronts experience in isolation. Definitions, background assumptions and substantive claims work together in an evidential system. This is a philosophical criticism of proposed accounts, not an experimental finding that two previously measurable truth-types are physically identical.[ref]
For philosophy of science, the important consequence is that neither logic nor observation should be credited with doing the other's work. In Euclidean geometry, a conclusion can follow from specified axioms; whether physical space satisfies the relevant geometry is a separate issue. Similarly, defining momentum as in a model does not alone establish that this quantity is conserved in every physical interaction. A formal relation can be fixed by stipulation while the model's applicability remains empirical.
The best position is therefore neither that science has discovered an absolute cleavage nor that all useful distinctions disappear if an absolute cleavage fails. Analyticity relative to explicit rules is intelligible; an unrevisable division of all scientific language requires further argument. Scientific practice can retain definitions, deduction and a distinction between stipulation and measurement while allowing revision of frameworks and rejecting a simple separation of completely theory-free observations from an eternally fixed conceptual scheme.
There are good examples of incommensurability when the claim is that some scientific terms and standards cannot be carried unchanged from one framework into another. They do not establish that rival theories cannot be understood, compared or rationally assessed. The strongest cases concern local interrelations among concepts, rather than a total absence of common experience or language.
The chemical transition associated with phlogiston provides one example. In a phlogistic account, a metal could be treated as a calx combined with phlogiston, with calcination involving the removal of that principle. In an oxygen theory of combustion, the relation is reorganized: the metal combines with oxygen to form the calx. Replacing one word with another while leaving every explanatory relation fixed does not translate the earlier system into the later one. The classifications of elements, compounds and principles are implicated together.[ref]
This illustrates semantic dependence within a conceptual network. It does not entail that historians cannot reconstruct earlier claims. They can learn how the older vocabulary was used, describe the associated operations and compare its expectations with experimental records. Thomas Kuhn's later treatment distinguishes such interpretation and language-learning from supplying a sentence-by-sentence translation into an unchanged later vocabulary. Explaining the earlier practice need not produce a modern expression which preserves every inferential role of each old term. The fact that the example can be discussed is therefore not, on its own, a refutation of this more restricted thesis.[ref]
A second example is the changing classification of planets. An Earth-centred arrangement can classify the Sun and Moon with the wandering celestial bodies while excluding the Earth. A heliocentric model reorganizes those relationships: the Earth is a planet and the Moon orbits it. A word-by-word substitution loses a change in the categories and relations used to frame the problem. Yet the investigators can still share observations of apparent positions and disagree about how to explain them. A change in classification is not proof that they inhabit incomparable worlds.
The comparison of Newtonian and relativistic momentum is particularly useful for limiting the claim. With invariant rest mass , modern special relativity gives , whereas Newtonian mechanics uses . Here is the speed of light and is the Lorentz factor. For and matched rest-mass convention,
This supplies a precise comparison of predictions within a domain. It does not derive all the older interpretation from the newer one with every concept unchanged. Conversely, it would be false to claim that relativity universally replaces invariant mass by a velocity-dependent quantity: invariant rest mass is a standard part of the relativistic account. The historical use of relativistic mass must be distinguished from this convention. For example, at , the invariant rest mass is still while ; defining relativistic mass as would give . These conventions must not be silently identified. A changed conceptual setting and a controlled mathematical relation between models can coexist.
Methodological differences supply another sense of incommensurability. Investigators may disagree about which problems are central, how much explanatory mechanism is required or how competing virtues should be weighted. Such disagreement can obstruct an algorithmic verdict without abolishing shared values such as accuracy or consistency. Shared criteria may themselves be applied differently. Neither fact demonstrates that no reasons can be offered across the disagreement.[ref]
The conclusion is accordingly local and discriminating. Chemical kinds, astronomical categories and physical quantities can change their roles in ways not captured by a simple dictionary of synonyms. These examples challenge an account of progress as the addition of truths expressed in an eternally fixed vocabulary. They do not establish wholesale untranslatability, the impossibility of learning a rival framework, equal evidential merit or the irrationality of theory choice. To defend a stronger conclusion one would need to identify the precise comparison that fails and explain why available interpretation, common observations and domain-limited mathematical correspondences cannot repair it.
There is no unconditional logical dependence of Newton's first law on Newton's third law. There is, however, a dependence if one applies the first to an extended, isolated composite and interprets its motion as the motion of its centre of mass. The difference is between the behaviour of an elementary body with zero total force and a theorem about cancellation of internal forces. Isaac Newton's own first-law discussion includes projectiles and spinning bodies, so the composite-body issue is physically significant.[ref]
For a constant positive mass in an inertial frame, Newton's second law gives . Setting the total force to zero yields uniform rectilinear motion; it uses no action–reaction assumption. The first law additionally identifies a common class of inertial frames in which such a statement applies. One cannot establish that class by arbitrarily straightening a single trajectory, and one cannot test the claim by defining every observed acceleration to be an unspecified force.
A concrete countermodel separates these issues. Suppose two bodies obey the second-law equations with internal forces and , with nonzero constant . Every elementary body with zero total force still has constant velocity, but the two-body momentum satisfies
Thus the elementary-body first law is compatible with failure of the third. Calling the pair isolated does not make its internal total force zero: that is precisely what has not been assumed. This countermodel establishes logical independence, not a proposal for a successful fundamental interaction.
Now strengthen the first-law claim: every isolated composite has an inertially moving centre of mass whenever the total external force vanishes. With , Newton's second law gives
For an isolated pair, the strengthened claim requires . This is the weak, equal-and-opposite form of Newton's third law. It does not by itself require collinearity with the bodies' separation; the central-force condition is stronger and bears on conservation of angular momentum. For many bodies, cancellation of the sum does not alone imply pairwise cancellation without assumptions about the decomposition into interactions.
The right conclusion is therefore conditional. A first law for individual force-free bodies does not presuppose the third law. A first law for all isolated material composites, combined with the usual centre of mass and Newton's second law, imports an internal-momentum-balance condition. In theories with dynamical fields, material bodies can exchange momentum with those fields; conservation of momentum then concerns the combined system and need not imply instantaneous pairwise action–reaction between particles.
The Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen paradox begins with correlations enabling certain predictions about one system from alternative measurements on a separated partner. Its EPR criterion of reality promotes certainty without disturbance to a sufficient condition for an element of reality. Together with a locality premise, the alternative position and momentum predictions motivate simultaneously real quantities not represented by one standard quantum state. The intended conclusion is incompleteness, not a mathematical inconsistency of the predictions.[ref]
Niels Bohr challenges the inference from absence of mechanical disturbance to a context-independent assignment of reality. He accepts that there is no mechanical disturbance of the distant system at the relevant stage. His response invokes the experimental conditions defining the possible predictions: arrangements establishing a spatial reference and arrangements enabling a momentum balance are complementary. On this view, changing the local measurement changes the whole phenomenon to which a definite property attribution belongs. It does not remotely kick the other particle. His diaphragm discussion illustrates why specifying the apparatus and its reference frame is part of the physical claim.[ref]
A spin singlet state gives a clean reconstruction. Its state is
Here and ; the minus sign is an irrelevant overall quantum phase. Measuring the first spin along either axis predicts the other's same-axis outcome with certainty. But the two alternative local quantum measurements define different conditional ensembles. Averaging over the unread outcome leaves the distant reduced density matrix in both cases. The contrast between conditional prediction and the unchanged distant marginal is quantum steering together with quantum no-signalling.
This explains how consistent quantum predictions can coexist with the absence of an operational remote disturbance. It also identifies what a Bohrian rejection of the EPR inference amounts to: certainty in alternative contexts does not license combining the corresponding property attributions into one context-independent account. Merely invoking the Heisenberg uncertainty principle would not suffice, since EPR specifically argued that locality permits the attribution before any incompatible distant measurements are jointly attempted.
The reply is satisfactory as an articulation of quantum complementarity, but not a demonstration that the EPR locality premise and completeness are jointly sustainable. The critic can distinguish a change in our permissible predictions from a change in the distant physical condition. If the latter really is unchanged, why must the alternative predictions not reveal pre-existing properties? Bohr's contextual standard rejects that demand rather than deriving its impossibility from neutral premises. Later Bell inequalities sharpen the issue: quantum no-signalling does not imply Bell local causality. A satisfactory contemporary account should acknowledge this difference, rather than crediting Bohr with a proof of Bell-local completeness or interpreting his reply as faster-than-light mechanical influence.
