Fix an integer and write
For each power, substitute and extend the upper limit to infinity; the discarded tail is exponentially small. Since , the Gamma integral gives
To control the remainder, choose such that for . Its integral there is at most . On the remainder is bounded and its integral is . Since is arbitrary, we have the full Watson lemma expansion
More precisely, after the term , the remainder is . This proof uses neither differentiability of nor convergence of its asymptotic series.
Use a mostly-plus target Minkowski spacetime metric and restore the string tension by . After Wick rotation, the Polyakov action on a Riemann surface is
The Polyakov path integral integrates over embeddings and worldsheet metrics, dividing by worldsheet diffeomorphisms and Weyl transformations. For a consistent flat bosonic string theory, take the critical dimension of the bosonic string . Conformal gauge turns the embedding fields into free scalars; its Faddeev-Popov determinant is represented by the bc system. The remaining integrations are over worldsheet moduli and external insertion points.
A tachyon vertex operator is
The worldsheet Green function is . The operator product expansion with the holomorphic stress-energy tensor gives conformal weights . An integrated string vertex operator must have weights , so the mass-shell condition is , or tachyonic mass parameter .
At lowest order in the string coupling, the worldsheet is a Riemann sphere. For four external states, three insertion points can be fixed by a Möbius transformation. In the worldsheet ghost field description these three vertices carry , while the fourth is integrated. The three-point worldsheet ghost correlator gives the squared product of the three fixed-point separations, precisely the sphere gauge fixing for four string vertices factor. Thus fixing three points is a gauge choice, rather than deleting three integrations without their Jacobian.
The integral over the constant embedding worldsheet zero mode gives . The remaining Gaussian integral, using normal ordering to remove self-contractions, gives the Koba-Nielsen factor
Set ; the vertex at infinity is defined with its conformal-weight factor. Let all momenta be incoming and define
The mass-shell condition and momentum conservation imply . Since and similarly for the pair , the sphere tachyon position integral becomes
Here depends on the normalization of external string vertex operators; it does not affect the kinematic dependence.
To evaluate the remaining worldsheet modulus, put and . The complex beta integral is
For example, this identity follows by writing the two powers as Schwinger-parameter Gamma integrals, doing the two-dimensional Gaussian integral, and changing the two positive parameters to their sum and ratio. The complex beta integral first holds for and ; the scattering result is its analytic continuation. The third gamma-function argument is . Absorbing into , the result is the tree-level four-tachyon amplitude, the Virasoro–Shapiro amplitude:
It is symmetric in the three Mandelstam variables and has generic poles at , matching the bosonic string mass spectrum. The formula is the leading term of string perturbation theory. Higher orders are constructed by the same Polyakov path integral prescription on higher-genus worldsheets, with four marked points and the corresponding ghost and worldsheet moduli measure; genus has coupling power .
In the Bühlmann model, a latent risk parameter is drawn from a population distribution. Conditional on , the yearly observations are independent and identically distributed random variables, with conditional expectation and conditional variance . Define the structural parameters
Here is the expected process variance, while is the variance of hypothetical means. The Bühlmann credibility premium is the best affine estimate of from the observed claims, under mean squared error. Predicting the next claim gives the same affine estimate: the extra conditional observation noise contributes the constant to the prediction error.
The law of total variance and conditional independence give
An affine estimate can be written as : for any chosen , optimizing the constant makes its expected value equal to . The normal equations for the linear least-squares projection are
For they force all to agree, with . Thus the credibility factor and premium are
The credibility factor increases with the observation count and between-risk variance, and decreases with within-risk variance. If , the risk mean is known and ; if and , one observation reveals it and . If both vanish, the premium is the fixed value and the factor is immaterial.
In the specified model, the conditional law is a gamma distribution with shape and scale . Therefore
The prior is an inverse-gamma distribution with shape and scale . To obtain its moments directly, substitute in the defining integral, obtaining
The Gamma function recurrence yields
The assumption makes both structural variances finite. Hence
It follows that the model-specific credibility estimate is
For the Bayes estimator under squared error loss, the quantity to estimate is , so the optimum is its posterior mean. The likelihood function, viewed as a function of , is proportional to
Multiplication by the prior shows gamma scale inverse-gamma conjugacy:
Although the printed hint only mentions integer shapes, the same substitution and Gamma integral normalize this posterior for every positive real shape, so no integrality of is needed. Its posterior mean gives the Bayesian estimate and comparison
This exact Bühlmann credibility for gamma claims holds for every observed sample, not merely on average. Here the posterior mean is affine in the sample mean, so the best affine Bühlmann credibility premium is also the unrestricted Bayes estimator under squared error loss.
Substitution of the separated exponential profile into the age-structured population equation gives . Therefore
For , the birth boundary condition cancels and becomes the Euler-Lotka equation
The survival probability to age is for constant death rate. Hence the expected lifetime offspring count, or net reproduction rate, is
The Gamma integral evaluates the Euler-Lotka equation as , requiring . Its real solution and profile are
Thus , and gives positive growth. The profile is a nonzero formal separated solution for all positive ; a finite total population additionally requires , equivalently . A decaying-in-time mode need not have an integrable age profile.
In atomic units the Time-independent Schrödinger equation is
The displayed equation is the Radial Schrodinger equation for the hydrogen atom. Its radial derivative terms come from the Laplacian in spherical coordinates, the Coulomb term is the potential , and separation into spherical harmonics uses the orbital angular momentum eigenvalue , producing the centrifugal term .
For , substitute . Dividing the equation by and comparing powers of gives
The solution regular at the origin has , and when both equations agree. This is the circular Coulomb bound state. Thus
The radial probability measure is . With and the Gamma integral, the mean radius of a circular Coulomb bound state is
At fixed principal quantum number , the allowed orbital angular momentum quantum numbers are , and each has magnetic quantum number . Hence the orbital quantum degeneracy is
Including electron spin would double this to , but spin is absent from the stated wavefunctions.
The Mellin transform is
where this integral converges. Rapid decay at infinity makes the integral over an entire function of , but alone gives no control near zero. With the additional expansion, the integral initially converges absolutely for .
For , expand . Absolute convergence justifies termwise integration, using the Gamma integral, and gives the scaled Bose integral
There is a missing hypothesis in the general continuation claim: one needs . The original PDF, like the TeX, only says that the sequence increases. Under the intended additional hypothesis, split the integral at one and subtract terms of the asymptotic expansion:
Continuity of at zero makes it bounded on . The last integral is holomorphic on : on every compact subset, its integrand and all its derivatives are dominated by an integrable power of times a power of . The expressions for successive agree on their common initial domain and hence everywhere they overlap by the identity theorem. As , these half-planes cover . Taking with isolates the term , while all other terms are holomorphic near . Thus the corrected claim is
This is meromorphic continuation of a Mellin transform from an asymptotic expansion.
To show why the correction matters, set , , and
where is continuous, equals one for and vanishes for . On , the remainder after division by is a uniformly convergent series of nonnegative powers of , so it extends continuously to zero with value . Away from zero, define by the required remainder quotient; it is continuous on the rest of as well. Thus all the printed hypotheses hold. Its Mellin transform equals
The series continues meromorphically on and has genuine poles at , accumulating at . A meromorphic function on cannot have such an accumulation of poles. This is the accumulating asymptotic exponents obstruct Mellin continuation counterexample.
For the Gamma function, the Gamma function recurrence gives
At the numerator is and the product of the nonzero denominator factors is . Therefore the residues of the Gamma function are
The generating function of the Bernoulli numbers gives the convergent expansion near zero
The subtraction proof above applies to this expansion, including its zero coefficients, which give no pole. At , for , the residue of its transform is , while the residue of is . Their quotient defines a holomorphic continuation of the Riemann zeta function at this point, including when the first residue is zero. Dividing gives the Bernoulli formula for zeta values at nonpositive integers:
In particular the generating-series convention is , so the formula includes .
At , the endpoint is degenerate: . The contributing width is therefore , rather than the width in part (i). With , the formula for a degenerate endpoint in Laplace's method gives
The coefficient is a Gamma function value obtained by the Gamma integral.
The three fixed- estimates below cease to be uniform as the minimum of the phase approaches the endpoint. For the cubic endpoint-to-saddle transition, write
The Taylor series of the hyperbolic sine gives, for bounded and fixed ,
The cubic term controls the tail, so localization of the Laplace integral gives the uniform leading formula
Here is the cubic Laplace transition integral, equal to in terms of the Scorer Hi function.
To recover the endpoint regime, let . Scale in ; the cubic term becomes negligible and . Therefore
which agrees with part (i) in the overlap . At , the Gamma integral gives , recovering part (iii).
For , set . The exponent has its maximum at , with second derivative . Thus Laplace's method gives
and the transition formula becomes
For with , part (ii) has
Putting reproduces both the exponential and its prefactor. For relative agreement of these leading exponentials, one may use the overlap , which makes . Thus the same transition integral connects all three regimes.
Figure 1.
The cubic endpoint-to-saddle transition
. Direct numerical integration of the original phase approaches the same cubic transition function as the large parameter increases. Negative transition parameter places the minimum inside the interval; positive parameter leaves an ordinary endpoint minimum. Details.
Expanding and using the Gamma integral gives
Thus the energy of blackbody radiation is
The Laplace-transform formula for a semigroup resolvent is locally uniformly convergent in the half-plane , so it may be differentiated under the Bochner integral:
The resolvent identity gives and, by mathematical induction,
Therefore
For real , the integral triangle inequality and the Gamma integral give
Consequently
The exponent printed in the question is a typographical error: already at it contradicts the first-resolvent bound.
Because , is locally integrable at the origin and has only polynomial growth at infinity, so it defines a tempered distribution. It is a homogeneous distribution of degree and is radial. Its Fourier transform is therefore radial and homogeneous of degree , so it must have the form . In particular, .
To determine the constant, use the stated Gamma integral representation, Fubini's theorem, and the Fourier transform of a Gaussian:
The change of variables formula then gives
This is precisely the Fourier transform of the Riesz kernel.
The Gamma integral gives
For each , the last factor is a Gaussian kernel, and the remaining weight is nonnegative. The diagonal integral equals , so part ii shows that the displayed function is a positive-semidefinite kernel.
The intended oscillatory factor is . Give the early-time endpoint the usual i-epsilon prescription and set . For an integer ,
It is therefore purely imaginary. Equivalently, rotating the contour to the negative imaginary axis turns the remaining integral into a real Gamma integral and leaves one overall factor of .
Multiply the two defining Gamma integrals. For the nonnegative product integrand allows Tonelli's theorem:
Use , , so , and the positive quadrant becomes , . The Jacobian determinant has absolute value
After including this factor, the transformed integral separates:
This proves the beta-gamma identity,
All changes of variables are made inside the open positive domains; their boundaries do not contribute to the integrals.
For real , apply integration by parts to the Gamma integral with and :
The boundary term vanishes: at zero, and exponential decay dominates the power at infinity. This proves the Gamma function recurrence
Substituting into the defining Gamma integral gives
Both endpoints are convergent, so no continuation of the Gamma function is needed here.
For independent centered normal random variables of common variance , has a chi-squared distribution with degrees of freedom. Its density gives the displayed moments by a Gamma integral. In three dimensions, . Radial odd moments need not vanish, although any odd Cartesian product does.
Stirling formula Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
Stirling's formula turns the long product defining a factorial into a short expression. For positive integers , put
Then as . This is asymptotic equivalence: , so the relative error tends to zero. It does not say that the absolute error tends to zero, and the formula is not an equality for finite . The Gamma function extends this approximation beyond integer inputs. [ref]
For ,
The leading estimate is about low. Multiplying by the first correction factor gives
which is about low. The Stirling correction by Gaussian moments explains why this factor is rather than an arbitrary numerical adjustment.
Figure 1.
Relative factorial errors shrink faster after the first Stirling correction
. For each integer , the curves compare and with the exact factorial. The vertical axis is the nonnegative relative error, on a logarithmic scale. Details.
The usefulness is in ratios as well as in enormous numbers. Applying Stirling's formula to the three factorials in a central binomial coefficient gives
This counts the ways to choose exactly half of objects. Equivalently, for independent fair coin tosses, the binomial distribution assigns probability to exactly heads. An exponentially large count becomes a simple probability scale after cancellation.
For numerical calculations, taking the natural logarithm yields
where . Computing a logarithm of a large factorial avoids representing the factorial itself. The Robbins bounds for Stirling's formula give a finite- interval for this logarithmic remainder, rather than only a limiting statement.
The factor is beautiful because a Gaussian integral lies behind a discrete product. The Gaussian peak behind Stirling's formula displays this connection through the Gamma integral and Laplace's method. A rigorous proof must also control the tails of the integral; the local expansion explains the geometry but is not by itself a complete proof.
James Stirling published Methodus differentialis in 1730, a treatise on summation and interpolation of infinite series. This setting connects the formula with a practical calculation problem: taking logarithms turns a long product into a sum, whose growth can be approximated. [ref]
