Valley of stability 2026-10-18
The valley of stability is the region of nuclear masses near the minima with respect to proton-neutron imbalance. Its beta-stable band bends toward neutron excess for heavier nuclei, as nuclear Coulomb energy competes with the cost of neutron-proton asymmetry. The band is distinct from the particle-emission boundaries set by nuclear separation energies.
Vapor-density molar mass measurement 2026-10-14
An ideal gas law measurement obtains amount of substance without knowing the chemical formula in advance:Here is vapor pressure, is its occupied volume, is absolute temperature, is the molar gas constant, and is the mass of vapor occupying that volume at those conditions.
Santa Monica College's teaching experiment uses a Erlenmeyer flask with a pinhole foil cap, a water bath on a hot plate, a thermometer, and a barometer. Excess volatile liquid displaces air. A dissolved dye loses its colour and deposits when the liquid evaporates; three more minutes of heating follow. Cooling condenses retained vapor. Subtracting the dry assembly mass from the cooled assembly mass supplies . The flask volume comes from brim-full water mass and mass density at its measured temperature. Controls include a dry exterior, excluding bath water, and three trials.[ref]
11B: The Dumas Method (Experiment) by Santa Monica College. Santa Monica College, 11B, Experimental Set-up steps 1–6; Trials 1–3 steps 1–4: apparatus, dye endpoint, heating, drying and repetition
The inference assumes vapor pressure equals atmospheric pressure, vapor and bath reach thermal equilibrium, the retained vapor mass is recovered on cooling, and the vapor obeys the ideal gas law. Residual air, thermal expansion of the flask, and vapor temperature below bath temperature are explicit error questions in the teaching experiment. Repeating trials assesses repeatability; it does not remove a shared bias.[ref]

Variable-mass system Created 2026-10-13 Updated 2026-10-14
A body exchanging mass with material of inertial velocity satisfies the displayed momentum conservation law for one stream, with signed positive for entry and negative for exit. The force excludes the incoming or outgoing momentum flux. A short time interval gives , proving the formula. For stationary incoming matter, ; for matter leaving at the body's own velocity, . The rocket equation and accreting-drop motion are applications.
Vectorlike gauge spectrum Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-14
A vectorlike gauge spectrum pairs complex gauge group representations and among independent left-handed Weyl spinors. Such a pair permits a gauge-invariant fermion mass and occurs in a full charged hypermultiplet of four-dimensional extended supersymmetry.
Divide the inertial Langevin equation by mass and let . An isotropic three-dimensional equilibrium velocity has by the equipartition theorem. Its white acceleration dot-covariance amplitude is therefore , while the amplitude per Cartesian component is . A scalar moment formula must use the component variance rather than the trace.
Velocity alignment 2026-10-24
An interaction making particle velocities approach those of their neighbors. Symmetric nonnegative weights conserve total momentum for equal particle masses and dissipate relative kinetic energy. Connectivity and quantitative lower bounds on the interaction matter for eventual consensus; nonnegativity alone permits noninteracting groups.
Velocity anisotropy 2026-10-25
Directional inequality of velocity dispersions. Inferring a three-dimensional dynamical mass from one line-of-sight dispersion requires an assumption about this anisotropy.
In a nonrelativistic elastic collision of incident mass at speed with initially stationary mass , the centre-of-momentum frame moves at . The projectile's outgoing velocity in that frame has fixed magnitude . Its laboratory velocity tips lie on a circle of radius centred at . For , a tangent from the origin gives the largest laboratory scattering angle, . This geometrical result follows from Galilean velocity addition and conservation of energy.
Velocity moment 2026-10-24
Integrating a phase-space distribution function against products of particle velocity components produces its velocity moments. The zeroth gives number density, the first gives number flux, and, after multiplying by particle mass, the second gives momentum flux. Replacing by , where is the mean velocity, defines central velocity moments; the second is the pressure tensor divided by particle mass.
Velocity relaxation time Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
For a particle of mass with linear drag , the velocity relaxation time is the exponential relaxation time . Under a constant applied force and zero-mean random forcing, the averaged Langevin equation is . Solving givesThus the initial mean-velocity deviation decays by a factor after time . Since the force-per-velocity coefficient has units , has units of time. If the damping parameter is instead defined as a rate , the same time is . For a sphere obeying Stokes's law, . The fluctuation-dissipation relation for a Langevin particle gives the same decay time for its equilibrium velocity covariance.
Under the magnetic-only Lorentz force, planar velocity has constant magnitude and an accumulated phase determined by the time integral of the axial field. For , the planar position involves Fresnel integrals. With initial planar velocity and zero initial position, its limit is . The model prescribes a magnetic-only force; a physical time-dependent field may also produce an induced electric field.

Velocity-selected magnetic mass analyzer 2026-10-18
Reuse the velocity selector analysis in the Thomson charge-to-mass experiment, but now send positive ions with into a separate magnetic analyzer. The selector fields and give . If the analyzer field is perpendicular to the selected velocity, its gyroradius givesfor a semicircular return to the entrance plane. The displayed impact separation is a diameter. This formula is linear in at fixed selected speed; the fixed-electric potential difference model above instead gives . They impose different experimental conditions.
For a chosen example, take , , and . Thus . Approximating an ion mass by and setting gives and . Here denotes the unified atomic mass unit. These are stipulated teaching inputs, not a reported Aston measurement or an exact magnesium atomic mass.
A finite accepted speed range broadens the radius distribution. At fixed and , . At fixed electric charge and mass, gives for a small kinetic energy spread. A one-percent kinetic energy spread therefore produces roughly a half-percent radius spread before other broadening is included. Its width convention must be specified before converting that statement into a mass resolving power.
Velocity selector Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
A velocity selector uses perpendicular electric field and magnetic field to transmit a narrow range of speeds along a chosen beam direction. Assume uniform static electric field and magnetic field , with , and an incident velocity . The cross product gives , so the transverse Lorentz force isFor an electron, the electric force points downward and the magnetic force upward. A faster electron initially bends upward; a slower one initially bends downward. At the selected speed, both forces cancel along the whole straight trajectory. The cancellation is independent of mass and nonzero electric charge; it selects velocity, not a particular charge-to-mass ratio. A component of velocity parallel to the magnetic field is not constrained by the cancellation, so the incident beam must also have its direction restricted.
A real exit slit accepts a finite range of speeds and incident directions. A zero displacement at one screen alone does not establish zero force throughout the path: a curved trajectory could return to that screen position. The ideal velocity selector interpretation requires a straight aligned beam, known overlapping electric field and magnetic field, and sufficiently narrow entrance and exit slits. Its useful role in the Thomson charge-to-mass experiment teaching model is to supply speed independently of the subsequent magnetic bending.

The ordered tree-level four-tachyon open string amplitude is proportional to . Its Mandelstam variables locate the mass levels, and pole residues reveal spin content.
Vertically averaged viscous disk equations 2026-10-07
In an axisymmetric thin disc with no vertical mass or torque flux, integrate mass and conservation of angular momentum over height. With fixed height-independent , the equations are and . Their difference gives . The density-weighted viscosity of a disk supplies the integrated stress.
Vertical mass coordinate of a disk 2026-10-14
In a reflection-symmetric astrophysical disk, the vertical mass coordinate measures mass per unit area above the midplane. It satisfies , so inside the material. If the total surface density is , the upper face is ; the normalized coordinate ranges from zero to one. Integrals weighted by mass density become ordinary integrals in , which is especially useful for radiative diffusion and the density-weighted mean kinematic viscosity.
A horizontal bar of mass hangs from a spring of incremental stiffness , and two equal masses hang separately from the bar through springs of stiffness . The bar remains horizontal and all motion is vertical. For physical displacements from the loaded equilibrium, the kinetic energy and quadratic potential energy areGravity determines the static extensions; its linear terms cancel at equilibrium. Exchange of the lower masses splits the normal modes into the antisymmetric mode with , and two symmetric modes . The latter obey and . Their determinant gives the title quadratic in , and . For , their squared angular frequencies are , with displacement ratios respectively. The lower symmetric mode moves all masses in phase; the higher one moves the lower pair against the bar.
Vibrating membrane Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-10-20
A physical sheet under uniform isotropic tension per unit length T and with mass per unit area has small transverse displacement satisfying , where . Fixed edges impose zero displacement. This mechanical membrane model neglects bending stiffness, large slopes and dissipation.
Virial contraction under stellar evaporation 2026-10-06
For an isolated quasistatic cluster with near-zero escape energies, the bound negative energy is approximately fixed. The virial theorem and gravitational radius then imply . A homologous mean density scales as and increases as mass evaporates. Tidal limitation or finite positive escape energies modifies this simple model.
