The following are the leading quantum electrodynamics diagrams. Solid arrows indicate fermion-number flow, and wavy lines indicate photons. The heavy source line represents a charged nucleus; its recoil allows four-momentum conservation.
For Compton scattering, , there are two diagrams: absorption of the incident photon followed along the electron line by emission of the outgoing photon, and the opposite ordering. These are the - and -channel electron propagators. Both scattering amplitudes are order .
For bremsstrahlung, , a virtual photon transfers momentum between the electron and the source. The real photon is emitted before or after this interaction along the electron line. These two dominant external-field diagrams have scattering amplitudes of order . A full finite-mass charged-target calculation also includes radiation from the target; it is suppressed in the heavy stationary-source approximation used here.
For nuclear-field pair production, , crossing the preceding diagrams gives two order- contributions, with the incoming real photon and the exchanged virtual photon in either order along the pair's fermion line. An isolated real photon cannot produce a massive pair in vacuum: its invariant squared mass is zero, whereas the pair has invariant squared mass at least . The source absorbs recoil momentum.
The static one-pion exchange propagator gives a Yukawa potential proportional to . Its characteristic range is therefore the Reduced Compton wavelength,This is an exponential falloff scale, not a sharp interaction cutoff. The ordinary Compton wavelength would introduce an unwanted factor .
A Feynman diagram specifies a term in the perturbative scattering amplitude, not a measured microscopic trajectory. Assign external spinors or polarization vectors, an interaction factor to each Feynman vertex and a propagator to each internal line; impose four-momentum conservation and integrate over independent loop momenta. Sum amplitudes for indistinguishable alternatives, then square, sum final spins and average unpolarized initial spins. A decay rate uses in natural units; a cross section also divides by incident flux. interference means probabilities of individual diagrams must not simply be added.
The electromagnetic fermion vertex is , with coupling proportional to ; it preserves fermion flavour. There is no elementary three-photon or four-photon vertex in quantum electrodynamics. The weak charged current has and vertices, with a left-chiral projector and a Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element at the quark vertex. The weak neutral current has vertices with vector and axial couplings; it includes neutrinos and is flavour diagonal at tree level. Electroweak gauge interactions also include , and quartic , , and vertices. Higgs-fermion and Higgs-vector interactions complete the mass-related scalar sector.[ref]
Quantum chromodynamics has vertices proportional to , plus three-gluon and four-gluon Feynman vertices because gluons carry color charge. A quark-gluon vertex preserves quark flavour. Internal particles need not be on their mass shells, but electric charge and four-momentum are conserved at each vertex. The figures below show representative leading flavour topologies; binding and hadronization are implicit, and additional strong-interaction contributions can modify hadronic amplitudes.

Continuum amplitudes. The leading quantum electrodynamics diagram is electron-positron annihilation into a virtual photon, followed by conversion to a muon pair. Replacing the outgoing muons with a quark-antiquark pair gives the quark-level hadronic diagram. The first two panels below show these processes.
Original Feynman diagrams for electromagnetic pair production, vector-quarkonium annihilation, and the open-bottom decay topology
. Details. The Feynman rules give, up to signs and factors of ,The two vertices supply , and the photon propagator supplies . Each external current scales as , so the complete amplitude is of order , and its squared magnitude is of order . The two-body relativistic scattering cross-section supplies the remaining from flux and phase space. Integrating the angular distribution yields . Keeping only the squared propagator while ignoring the external currents would incorrectly predict .
A quark of charge contributes times the massless muon rate. With open and , the hadronic R ratio isThis is the requested massless leading-QED continuum approximation. Strong corrections, physical hadron thresholds, resonance contributions and Z exchange are separate effects; the pure photon formula is not a complete high-energy electroweak cross section throughout the entire stated range.
Efficiency normalization. Read the original PDF plot as a continuum of about and a maximum around at . The supplied conversion constant givesHence near the peak,If multiplies the displayed cross sections, the required scale isHere is the implied detection efficiency under the common-scale assumption. Using continuum readings – gives approximately –, illustrating the graph-reading precision. The nearby open-bottom threshold also limits the precision of the ideal continuum approximation.
Resonance quantum numbers and widths. Direct formation through a single photon requiresThese are the quantum numbers of the electromagnetic current. This concerns single-photon formation; associated production or two-photon reactions need not obey this restriction.
For a Breit-Wigner resonance cross section, subtract the continuum before finding the full width at half maximum. The plotted excess is about , so its half-height occurs at a total displayed cross section near , not . The crossings are roughly and , with a separation around –. ThusFor spin-one formation from unpolarized electrons and positrons, and . With , the peak resonance cross section and branching fractions relation becomesThe corrected excess is . Taking as a representative graph reading givesThus the plot supportsThe width and electronic partial width are estimates from the printed graph under the prescribed Breit-Wigner and efficiency assumptions; these are not precision world-average values. A scale correction changes the peak height and inferred partial width, but not the peak position or width.
Why the lower Upsilon states are narrow. In electromagnetic production and decay of vector quarkonium, every state can annihilate as . The electronic width probes the wavefunction at the origin, . The radial overlaps differ, but the same short-distance annihilation mechanism operates, so electronic widths remain of comparable order.
The hadronic mechanism changes sharply at . The first three Upsilon mesons lie below it and cannot produce an on-shell B-meson pair. Their leading purely strong annihilation channel is , followed by hadronization: a color-singlet pair cannot annihilate to one gluon, and two gluons cannot match its negative charge-conjugation parity. Three-gluon annihilation carries three powers of in the rate and requires quark-antiquark overlap. Electromagnetic annihilation to light quarks and, for excited states, transitions to lower bottomonium plus pions or photons also contribute.
The fourth state lies above the pair threshold and can instead undergo through light-pair creation, keeping the b and anti-b in separate outgoing mesons. The final panel depicts this quark-line topology; it represents a nonperturbative strong decay, not a free on-shell b quark radiating a real gluon. For two pseudoscalar B mesons the pair is in a P wave to give . Although close to threshold, this open strong channel has a much larger rate than the annihilation channels. Consequently a total width of tens of MeV can coexist with an electronic width below a keV; below threshold the total widths are smaller by hundreds or more, while their electronic widths remain of similar order.
Hyperfine estimate. For two spin-half constituents,The meson hyperfine mass splitting therefore raises the vector mass above the pseudoscalar mass. To infer its coefficient from only one measured mass, adopt the intended simple constituent ansatz that the spin-independent baseline is . ThenFor the spin-one partner,The estimate is the same for and with the supplied equal light-quark masses. The splitting is below , so the strong decay is closed. An electromagnetic transition is open and dominates over weak decay:It preserves electric charge, giving the corresponding charged or neutral B meson; the photon energy is approximately , slightly reduced by recoil. Strictly, the statement that the mass merely includes a spin-spin term does not fix : an independent spin-independent binding energy would leave the baseline unknown. The numerical prediction above explicitly uses the additive constituent-mass approximation.
Use the usual Feynman rule convention in which the diagonal quadratic terms of the free Lagrangian, including the physical W boson and Z boson masses, are incorporated into their propagators. Then there areA line joining two ends is a propagator, not an interaction vertex. Gauge boson self-interactions begin with cubic terms in the Yang-Mills theory Lagrangian. The question's name four families: they include eight gluon colour components and the two charged W bosons .
There is a convention to distinguish here: if a calculation expands around massless free fields, quadratic and terms may be drawn as two-leg mass insertions. Those two insertion types belong to that bookkeeping convention. Similarly, two-point self-energy corrections occur in loop diagrams. Neither is an additional fundamental interaction in the standard physical-mass, tree-level rules used for the count above.
Assume only Standard Model decay channels, negligible final-state masses, three lepton families, three quark colours and a unitary CKM matrix. The top-quark channels are kinematically closed. Summing the allowed quark channels gives times one leptonic width, while the leptons contribute three. Neglecting QCD and electroweak radiative corrections,The source's rounded CKM entries give almost the same factor; their tiny nonunitarity is not physically significant. ConsequentlyThe propagated uncertainty uses , taking as fixed. It is the measurement uncertainty within the stated tree-level approximation; omitted radiative corrections are an additional modelling limitation. In particular QCD increases the hadronic width and lowers the inferred coupling when included.
The printed electromagnetic comparison is , not the probability amplitude coupling . Compare like quantities:Equivalently exceeds . The weak interaction is weak at low energy primarily because of the massive propagator, rather than an exceptionally small fundamental coupling.
The charged-current process iswith a -channel emitted at the electron-to-neutrino vertex and absorbed at the antimuon-to-antineutrino vertex. It is not an -channel Annihilation of the unlike-flavour charged leptons into one .
At high momentum transfer the incident electron's left-chiral fraction tends to . In the collision centre-of-mass frame, the incoming antimuon moves along and its charged-current allowed right helicity has spin along . A rest-frame spin at Angle to projects onto that spin direction with probability . Therefore, if denotes the cross section for a pure left-helicity electron and fully selected antimuon spin,It vanishes at in the ultrarelativistic selection limit and is maximal at . Finite-mass corrections can fill the suppressed orientation. The absolute normalization depends on beam energy and the exchanged-boson propagator; the spin-angle dependence is what is fixed here.
Leptonic and quark-level exchange diagrams and polarized charged-current angular dependence
. Details. Let . Rotating the spin-one intermediate state between initial and final axes gives probability amplitudes proportional to for equal fermion helicities and for opposite ones. Thus, apart from a common positive normalization,
| Channel | Angular weight \ | | \ | | \ | | \ | | |
|---|
The common factor from the rotation elements is absorbed into the normalization. Distinct external helicities are orthogonal, so an unpolarized rate adds their squared probability amplitudes incoherently.
The source interchanges the conventional left and right electron coupling labels. With and , the physical electron values areAt , for example, the left electron still carries weak isospin , while the right electron is a weak singlet; the printed assignment gives the opposite result. This fixes how the helicity-channel table should be interpreted.[ref]
Electroweak Model and Constraints on New Physics by J. Erler and A. Freitas (2024). §10.1: fermion neutral-current interaction and weak-isospin assignments
For a muon final state, lepton universality gives the same pair of couplings. Crucially, swapping both labels does not change the summed distribution. Put , ; thenHere includes the resonance propagator, initial spin average and common coupling normalization. Equivalently,The source's simultaneous label interchange reverses but leaves its square unchanged.
An incoming fermion contributes a Dirac spinor and an outgoing fermion contributes its Dirac adjoint . The label specifies a spin state; is the on-shell four-momentum. Incoming and outgoing antifermions instead contribute and .
The exchanged boson is a virtual photon, represented in the Feynman rules by the photon propagator in Feynman gauge. Its momentum transfer is ; unlike an external real photon, it need not satisfy . Each Feynman vertex contracts a gamma matrix with this propagator and contributes in a conventional QED sign convention. The coupling constant sets the interaction strength, with fine-structure constant . One may reverse the sign of the photon field and both vertex signs without changing the result. The gamma matrices obey , with Minkowski metric .

For every term obeys the homogeneous Klein-Gordon equation. At , the equal-time commutator of the fields vanishes, so the propagator is continuous and there is no derivative of a Dirac delta function. Its first time derivative has the jumpThe second time derivative therefore supplies precisely the source:Thus the defined Feynman propagator is a Green's function with source normalization ; has source normalization . Keeping this factor avoids confusing the vacuum expectation value convention with conventions which define the propagator after dividing by .[ref]

For a connected cubic Feynman diagram with internal vertices, internal lines and three external lines, . Hence is odd and the loop order is . Through order , there is one tree-level Feynman diagram at and seven labelled one-loop Feynman diagrams at :
- One triangle, with one external line at each vertex. Fixing the three external labels leaves no internal automorphism, so its symmetry factor is .
- Three bubble diagrams on external branches of the tree, one for each choice of the distinguished external label . The other two external lines meet the remaining tree vertex. Exchanging the two parallel lines gives symmetry factor for each labelled graph.
- Three tadpole diagrams at the end of a chain. The middle vertex carries the distinguished external label , the other two external lines meet one end vertex, and the other end bears the loop. Reversing the two half-edges of the loop gives symmetry factor for each labelled graph.
All connected cubic three-point diagrams through third order: one tree and seven labelled one-loop graphs; a diagram of symmetry factor S has coefficient 1/S

The complete connected correlation function through this order isFor completeness of the classification, a one-loop connected internal graph either has a three-edge cycle, a pair of parallel edges and a bridge, or a self-loop and two bridges. The cubic degree condition forces exactly the external attachments just listed. Direct Wick contraction counting gives 1296 pairings for the triangle and 648 for each of the six other labelled graphs, divided by .
Connected does not mean one-particle irreducible. After amputation of external propagators, only the triangle is one-particle irreducible at this order; the six other loop graphs belong to the requested connected answer. The tadpole diagrams cannot be discarded without an additional subtraction prescription.

For the amputated one-particle-irreducible vertex, every internal bridge is forbidden. Define the Feynman integralsFor , the counting identity in part b gives . The only one-particle-irreducible Feynman diagrams are a triangle of three cubic vertices and a two-propagator bubble joining one cubic and one quartic vertex. Write for the amputated Feynman vertex, including its overall factor of . With all external momenta incoming,The triangle has for labelled external legs. The mixed bubble has because its two internal lines may be interchanged. There are three distinct terms, according to which external leg is attached to the cubic vertex; the other two attach to the quartic vertex. No tadpole attached by a bridge is one-particle irreducible.
The requested position-space three-point correlation function is obtained by restoring the external propagators and a Fourier transform:The tree-level contribution would replace the last factor by . This explicitly distinguishes the amputated vertex from the correlation function while giving all loop integrations in momentum space.

Let be the action-consistent free propagator established in a. Write and putThe perturbative expansion isDivide numerator and denominator by the same free vacuum functional . For , they becomeFor , abbreviate and . Since only opposite-charge fields contract, Wick's theorem givesandThe first multiplicity is internal pairings. In the connected term, there are two choices for the vertex's contracted to the external and two for its contracted to the external ; the remaining pair forms a tadpole diagram. ThereforeExpanding the inverse denominator cancels the free-line times vacuum bubble term, leavingThe local quartic interaction vertex has factor , since cancels its denominator 4. The oriented tadpole diagram has Feynman-diagram symmetry factor 1; the isolated two-loop vacuum vertex has factor in its coefficient. Coincident kernels and the integrals require a common regularization; none is being assigned a finite numerical value here.
More generally, vacuum bubbles exponentiate and factor from every numerator. Here global U(1) symmetry also makes all one-point functions zero. Thus a surviving graph with the two external insertions in separate connected components would have a component with one unbalanced charge and vanish. This proves that only connected graphs contribute to this particular two-point function to all perturbative orders. Vacuum normalization alone would not remove disconnected components containing external legs in a general four-point function. If one formally chooses a different free kernel, the displayed Wick multiplicities are unchanged; replacing by gives a formal oscillator series, not the Gaussian integral of the action as printed.

Work in the symmetric vacuum and continue with the action-consistent kernel . Under global U(1) symmetry, a correlator with fields and fields picks up a phase . Invariance for every requires . Consequently ten of the sixteen ordered field-type choices vanish, and the six placements with two fields of each type can be nonzero. This is the charge selection rule for complex scalar correlators, not an assertion about a symmetry-breaking vacuum with a nonzero one-point function.

In the two internal lines have the same orientation and can be interchanged, giving symmetry factor . In each mixed channel the two orientations are opposite; interchanging them is not an oriented graph automorphism, so . Equality of the numerical scalar kernels does not erase the field-slot distinction used in counting contractions.
There are also four connected external-leg tadpole diagrams. They must be included because a connected correlation function is neither amputated nor restricted to one-particle-irreducible Feynman diagrams. Representative integrals, with the other two obtained by the indicated external permutations, areEach oriented external-leg graph has symmetry factor 1: a directed self-loop has no independent reversal symmetry. Charged scalar propagators and vertices, with arrows following positive conserved charge and heavy arrows carrying two units
. Details. The arrows in the figure follow positive Noether charge: a light arrow carries one unit and a heavy arrow two. Consequently a heavy particle travels opposite its charge arrow, whereas its antiparticle travels along it. At a Feynman vertex, two unit-charge arrows enter and a two-unit arrow leaves; the conjugate Feynman vertex reverses every arrow. The quartic Feynman vertex has one incoming and one outgoing arrow of each weight. These rules prevent attaching a propagator between two unconjugated fields.
