The transition from phlogiston theory to an oxygen theory of combustion, and the transition from Newtonian mechanics to special relativity, support a restricted account of incommensurability. They show changes in conceptual organization and standards of explanation. They do not establish that rival scientists cannot communicate, compare results or give reasons for preferring a new account.
In the chemical case, a common phlogistic treatment makes a metal a calx combined with phlogiston, so calcination removes the principle responsible for its metallic character. Antoine Lavoisier's treatment reverses the decomposition: a metal combines with part of the air to form the calx. In a closed vessel, the calx's gain in mass must be understood together with what happens to the remaining gas. The mercury-and-air investigation and the recovery of the gas from the calx organize these operations into a different account of composition. This is a change in the relations between elements, compounds and chemical processes, not merely a new name for an unchanged substance.[ref]
Elements of Chemistry by Antoine Lavoisier. Part I, chapters III–V; the mercury-air investigation and the division and naming of atmospheric constituents
For Thomas Kuhn, a translation which replaces every occurrence of phlogiston with one modern substance fails to preserve those interconnected roles. Yet historians can learn the earlier vocabulary and reconstruct the relevant experiments. His later account explicitly distinguishes interpretation and language-learning from a word-for-word translation into a fixed successor vocabulary. Local untranslatability does not imply that every term or observation is inaccessible to the other community.[ref]
Commensurability, Comparability, Communicability by Thomas Kuhn. Sections 3–4, pp. 673–679: chemical vocabulary, translation and interpretation
The mechanical example concerns the reorganization of space, time and motion. In special relativity, distant simultaneity depends on an inertial frame and a specified clock-synchronization procedure. Newtonian mechanics instead uses a common time independent of inertial motion. This affects more than numerical corrections to one law: it changes which events are simultaneous and how velocity and momentum are related.[ref]
On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies by Albert Einstein. Sections 1–3 on simultaneity, clock synchronization and coordinate transformation
Nevertheless, quantitative comparison is possible. For an invariant rest mass ,Here is the speed of light and the Lorentz factor. At , the respective momenta are and , a directly comparable difference. For , the leading agreement explains an important domain of earlier success. It would be inaccurate to claim that modern special relativity invariably makes mass velocity-dependent: invariant rest mass remains invariant in this convention.
These examples therefore support conceptual discontinuity without total evidential isolation. Some explanatory aims and classifications change; many preparations, measurements and quantitative relations remain comparable. No unique algorithm follows from shared values such as accuracy and scope, but the absence of such an algorithm is weaker than the absence of rational assessment. The most defensible Kuhnian conclusion is local and historical: comparison can require learning a conceptual system, while still permitting criticism of both systems and empirically warranted preference between them.
There are good examples of incommensurability when the claim is that some scientific terms and standards cannot be carried unchanged from one framework into another. They do not establish that rival theories cannot be understood, compared or rationally assessed. The strongest cases concern local interrelations among concepts, rather than a total absence of common experience or language.
The chemical transition associated with phlogiston provides one example. In a phlogistic account, a metal could be treated as a calx combined with phlogiston, with calcination involving the removal of that principle. In an oxygen theory of combustion, the relation is reorganized: the metal combines with oxygen to form the calx. Replacing one word with another while leaving every explanatory relation fixed does not translate the earlier system into the later one. The classifications of elements, compounds and principles are implicated together.[ref]
Commensurability, Comparability, Communicability by Thomas Kuhn. Chemical example, particularly the interrelated roles of phlogiston, principle and element
This illustrates semantic dependence within a conceptual network. It does not entail that historians cannot reconstruct earlier claims. They can learn how the older vocabulary was used, describe the associated operations and compare its expectations with experimental records. Thomas Kuhn's later treatment distinguishes such interpretation and language-learning from supplying a sentence-by-sentence translation into an unchanged later vocabulary. Explaining the earlier practice need not produce a modern expression which preserves every inferential role of each old term. The fact that the example can be discussed is therefore not, on its own, a refutation of this more restricted thesis.[ref]
Commensurability, Comparability, Communicability by Thomas Kuhn. Discussion of interpretation and the historian as language teacher, pp. 675–681
A second example is the changing classification of planets. An Earth-centred arrangement can classify the Sun and Moon with the wandering celestial bodies while excluding the Earth. A heliocentric model reorganizes those relationships: the Earth is a planet and the Moon orbits it. A word-by-word substitution loses a change in the categories and relations used to frame the problem. Yet the investigators can still share observations of apparent positions and disagree about how to explain them. A change in classification is not proof that they inhabit incomparable worlds.
The comparison of Newtonian and relativistic momentum is particularly useful for limiting the claim. With invariant rest mass , modern special relativity gives , whereas Newtonian mechanics uses . Here is the speed of light and is the Lorentz factor. For and matched rest-mass convention,This supplies a precise comparison of predictions within a domain. It does not derive all the older interpretation from the newer one with every concept unchanged. Conversely, it would be false to claim that relativity universally replaces invariant mass by a velocity-dependent quantity: invariant rest mass is a standard part of the relativistic account. The historical use of relativistic mass must be distinguished from this convention. For example, at , the invariant rest mass is still while ; defining relativistic mass as would give . These conventions must not be silently identified. A changed conceptual setting and a controlled mathematical relation between models can coexist.
Methodological differences supply another sense of incommensurability. Investigators may disagree about which problems are central, how much explanatory mechanism is required or how competing virtues should be weighted. Such disagreement can obstruct an algorithmic verdict without abolishing shared values such as accuracy or consistency. Shared criteria may themselves be applied differently. Neither fact demonstrates that no reasons can be offered across the disagreement.[ref]
The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas Kuhn. Chapters IX–XII: differences in frameworks, problems and standards
The conclusion is accordingly local and discriminating. Chemical kinds, astronomical categories and physical quantities can change their roles in ways not captured by a simple dictionary of synonyms. These examples challenge an account of progress as the addition of truths expressed in an eternally fixed vocabulary. They do not establish wholesale untranslatability, the impossibility of learning a rival framework, equal evidential merit or the irrationality of theory choice. To defend a stronger conclusion one would need to identify the precise comparison that fails and explain why available interpretation, common observations and domain-limited mathematical correspondences cannot repair it.
One can derive a family containing the Lorentz transformations without assuming anything about light, but the Einstein's principle of relativity alone does not select that family member over the Galilean transformation. Extra assumptions must be stated: spatial and temporal translational symmetry, isotropy of SPACE, continuous transformations between equivalent inertial frames, reciprocity, and closure under composition. These are substantive restrictions, rather than consequences of the bare assertion that physical laws agree between inertial frames.
Here is the algebraic content. Translational symmetry makes the transformation between coincident origins a linear transformation. In one spatial direction the moving origin fixes . Isotropy and the inverse transformation at allow the standard calibrated formTo see why is universal, temporarily write the upper-right entry as , leaving the lower-left entry . Equality of the two diagonal entries in a composite boost gives , so is constant for nonzero boosts. Inversion fixes , with the positive branch continuous at zero. This is the universality of an invariant speed under boost composition.
The resulting velocity-addition formula law and invariant quadratic expression areFor , is an invariant limiting speed; setting the empirically determined equal to the vacuum speed of light gives the standard Lorentz transformation. For , and : an entirely consistent Galilean transformation satisfying the stated Einstein's principle of relativity. Thus the general assumptions do not establish that an invariant finite speed exists, much less identify it with light.
There is also a formal negative- branch, which has a rotation-like geometry in the time–space plane. Standard derivations exclude it using additional global assumptions, such as a preserved time orientation and unrestricted composition of admissible boosts. Without identifying those assumptions it is misleading to claim a two-way classification from the Einstein's principle of relativity alone. In three spatial dimensions isotropy requires the same constant in every direction.
The light postulate is therefore dispensable as the starting point for a conditional kinematical derivation; empirical input remains indispensable in identifying our world's value and sign of . Albert Einstein's original construction uses the light postulate and Einstein synchronisation, making that empirical connection explicit.[ref]
On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies by Albert Einstein. §§1–3, synchronization and the derivation from the two postulates
Replacing the postulate by an independently established finite invariant speed changes the route, rather than deriving all of special relativity from relativity alone. The ideal slow clock transport synchronization procedure reproduces Einstein synchronisation in an inertial frame, as a limiting result about proper time. It does not determine distant simultaneity without assumptions about clocks and their dynamics. Begin with identical ideal clocks together at , with matching rates and readings. Leave one there and transport the other to a laboratory position at small constant speed , neglecting gravity. Use Einstein-synchronised laboratory coordinates to calculate the result, rather than assuming that the transported clock already displays coordinate time.
The journey takes laboratory time . The transported clock's proper time is , giving the lagConsequentlyThe small time dilation accumulates over a long journey, but its quadratic dependence on dominates the journey's inverse dependence on . Saying that the journey is arbitrarily long is therefore not an objection to this limit. For a nonuniform journey with , ; a simple monotonic path of fixed length has the same vanishing bound. Acceleration stages can be arranged with vanishing displacement and proper time deficit, assuming the clock hypothesis.[ref]
On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies by Albert Einstein. §4, transported clocks and the leading quadratic retardation
This procedure establishes synchronization operationally for stationary laboratory clocks, once ideal-clock behaviour has empirical support. It does not show that every actual device is insensitive to transport: thermal shifts, acceleration-dependent mechanisms or differing gravitational potentials can spoil the idealization. Nor does the same construction define global synchronization for rotating laboratories, where path dependence is significant.
The conventionality question is separate. Resynchronize the same laboratory with , where . At the arrival event the transported clock approaches the reading , whereas a stationary clock displaying reads . Slow transport has not eliminated that difference. The transformed metric tensor has an off-diagonal term, and the proper time calculation still gives the same physical clock reading: changing labels cannot change its ticks. This is the invariance of reunion ages under clock resynchronization, applied to transport comparisons.
Slow clock transport synchronization is thus a useful physical realization of a preferred conventional coordinate choice given Lorentz-invariant dynamics and ideal clocks. It does not independently prove that the one-way speed of light must be isotropic in every admissible synchronization. It supplies a reproducible convention with a strong physical rationale, rather than a convention-free observation of an absolute present.

Historically, electromagnetism was central to Albert Einstein's 1905 argument. His opening example compares a moving magnet and a moving conductor. The same relative motion produces the observed induction, but a description using electric fields in one frame and the magnetic part of the Lorentz force in another seemed to divide the explanation according to which object was called stationary. The unsuccessful search for an observable preferred state of rest also motivated treating the laws of mechanics, optics and electromagnetism on a common footing. That establishes a strong historical connection, not a deduction that relativity applies only to electromagnetic systems.[ref]
On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies by Albert Einstein. opening magnet–conductor example and statement of the two postulates
The logical starting points of the kinematical argument are Einstein's principle of relativity and an invariant speed of light in vacuum, together with the assumptions needed to compare homogeneous inertial frames and physical measuring standards. Einstein synchronisation assigns distant clock readings by light exchange. In standard coordinates, the resulting Lorentz transformation for a boost along isNeither the derivation of this transformation nor the deductions of relativity of simultaneity and time dilation require solving Maxwell equations for every particular material system. They constrain the relation between measurements made in different inertial frames.[ref]
On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies by Albert Einstein. sections 1–4: synchronization, the transformation, and its kinematical consequences
There is nevertheless an empirical commitment in identifying with the speed of vacuum light. It is not a freely chosen numerical label: the theory says different inertial observers, using the prescribed standards, obtain the same measured value. More generally, specifies the causal structure of Minkowski spacetime. A theory could contain a massive scalar field with a Lorentz invariant equation and no electromagnetic field at all. Its particles, proper times and causal propagation would still be governed by relativistic geometry. This gives a direct sense in which the framework is logically more general than electromagnetism.
Conversely, the presence of Maxwell equations alone would not establish the full relativity principle for all matter. One could append a law involving a physically preferred timelike vector field, giving a nonelectromagnetic sector a preferred frame while retaining the usual electromagnetic equations. The covariant equation with a preferred timelike vector is an explicit model of this distinction. Requiring every relevant interaction to respect Lorentz invariance adds content; writing its components in four-dimensional notation does not supply that content automatically.
The magnet–conductor puzzle is resolved because electric fields and magnetic fields are related parts of one electromagnetic field, with the Lorentz force transforming consistently. The measured current must be compared for the same physical arrangement, including the conductor's state of motion, rather than by demanding the same electric and magnetic components separately. This is an application of the general frame transformations to a particular interaction, not the definition of every possible relativistic interaction.
Albert Einstein's later distinction between a principle theory and a constructive theory clarifies what the 1905 argument provides. It places universal restrictions on admissible laws without constructing every rod and clock from a particular microscopic model. A constructive explanation can additionally investigate why actual material standards approximate the required behavior. Harvey R. Brown and Oliver Pooley emphasize this dynamical question; it does not make the kinematical transformations meaningless or confine them to electromagnetic phenomena.[ref]

The strongest account therefore distinguishes historical motivation, the operational use of light, and the theory's universal scope. The 1905 paper addresses an electromagnetic problem through a framework whose restrictions extend to every physical process claimed to obey special relativity.
The velocity-addition formula combines the ship's station-frame velocity and the capsule's ship-frame velocity:For the distance convention in i, station-frame arrival takes . Transforming its two endpoint events back to the ship frame gives , agreeing with i. The capsule remains below the speed of light in either frame.
Applying the same work-energy theorem at the higher pair of speeds givesThe identical increment now needs about two thousand times as much work. The growth follows from the rapidly increasing Lorentz factor near the speed of light.
Choose positive x along the rocket's motion. If its instantaneous total mass is and it ejects a positive amount , the exhaust velocity in the original inertial frame is to first order. Conservation of momentum over that increment givesIntegrating the rocket equation from to givesThe constant exhaust speed is relative to the rocket, not the initial frame. Kinetic energy of rocket plus exhaust is not conserved because stored fuel energy is released. The calculation is Newtonian and requires resulting speeds small compared with the speed of light.
At the threshold found in i, both products are stationary in the centre-of-momentum frame, so they have the same velocity in the laboratory frame. Take the energetic incident photon along . The total energy is and total momentum is , so the centre-of-momentum frame moves atFor the numerical threshold,This is extremely close to, but strictly below, the speed of light. Each product has energy in the laboratory frame. Above threshold the same ratio of total momentum to total energy determines the motion of the pair's centre-of-momentum frame, but the individual electron and Positron need not have a common velocity.
Einstein's postulates state that the laws of physics have the same form in every inertial frame, and that light in vacuum has the same speed of light in every inertial frame, independently of the motion of its source. For a primed frame moving with velocity relative to an unprimed frame, with coincident origins at , the Lorentz transformations areThe following worldlines use Earth-frame time in years and distance in light years, so numerically . The instantaneous turnaround is the idealized limit of a short acceleration stage; the elapsed proper time is calculated along each inertial segment.

The protons at the Large Hadron Collider are ultrarelativistic: their energy is much greater than their rest energy, about . The relativistic energy-momentum relation therefore gives . Using the de Broglie wavelength,Thus the conventional de Broglie wavelength estimate is a distance of order .
There is a conventional factor of in interpreting this estimate. Spatial resolution from momentum transfer is often expressed as , where is the transferred momentum multiplied by the speed of light. Taking of order the beam energy givesBoth conventions describe the same characteristic scale up to . The beam energy alone does not give an exact experimental spatial resolution: a particular collision probes a scale set by its actual momentum transfer.

Without time dilation the flight time from the given altitude would be , about rest-frame mean lifetimes, giving survival fraction only even at speed . Relativistic muons can instead reach the ground with appreciable survival. Momentum-selected decay measurements test this clock-rate dependence experimentally.[ref]

The Michelson-Morley experiment splits coherent light into two perpendicular arms, reflects the beams and recombines them to observe interference fringes. Rotating the apparatus interchanges each arm's orientation relative to a proposed stationary luminiferous aether. The historical experiment used multiple reflections to increase the effective optical path and a rotatable support to compare orientations.[ref]

For equal one-way effective arm lengths , a classical stationary-aether model givesA right-angle rotation should reverse their difference, producing a fringe shift of approximately . The observed orientation-dependent shift was much smaller than the stationary-aether prediction. In special relativity, the apparatus rest frame has the same vacuum speed of light along both arms, so no such orientation-dependent shift is expected. The result supports special relativity but does not, by itself, uniquely establish every postulate or exclude every modified aether theory.

Specifying the reference frame is essential to the numerical answer.
