MOS inversion threshold Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
For an ideal MOSFET with a nondegenerate p-type semiconductor of acceptor density , define , where is the intrinsic carrier concentration. A positive surface electric potential lowers the local conduction band and valence band by . The surface electron density is . Equality gives the conventional onset of strong inversion at . The earlier crossover occurs at . Neither condition requires the Fermi level to enter the conduction band.
Mott insulator Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
A Mott insulator is insulating because of electron interactions even where a noninteracting electronic band structure would predict conduction. This mechanism differs from disorder-driven Anderson localization.
Mulliken electronegativity Created 2026-10-13 Updated 2026-10-20
Mulliken electronegativity uses both the cost of removing an electron and the energy released by accepting an electron. For specified isolated-atom states, the common ground-state convention isThe free electron's energy is the zero reference. Here is the ionization energy and is the electron affinity, positive for exothermic attachment. If attachment is instead tabulated as the signed energy change , the same expression is . Stating the sign convention prevents adding the wrong quantities. The 1934 original treated suitable valence states, which are not automatically the ground states used in this example.[ref]
Mulliken electronegativity has energy units before any additional rescaling. With and in electronvolts per chemical atom, is in electronvolts; with both in , it is a molar energy. For hydrogen, the RSC ground-state inputs are and , giving per chemical atom. For chlorine, and give . These are calculated ground-state Mulliken electronegativities, not the RSC's tabulated Pauling electronegativities.[ref][ref]
Both schemes place chlorine above hydrogen here, but their numerical differences cannot be subtracted from one another or equated. Dividing a molar Mulliken electronegativity by an energy conversion factor changes units; it does not transform it into a Pauling electronegativity. A further empirical mapping would require its own calibration and stated domain.
Multiwire proportional chamber Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
A multiwire proportional chamber is a proportional counter: parallel anode wires between cathodes in a gas. Charged particle ionization frees electrons; an electric field drives them toward wires, triggering an electron avalanche read by electronic amplifiers.[ref]
Opposite polarities identify the avalanche wire. Positive ion motion dominates integrated signal; detection precedes complete collection. Calibrated electron travel times enable drift chambers.[ref]
Multiwire proportional chamber experiment Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
The original apparatus used stainless-steel wires between meshes away, flowing argon with organic vapor, negative mesh voltage and individual electronic amplifiers. A X-ray source calibrated pulse height while voltage was varied.[ref]
A coincidence circuit defined a narrow proton or pion beam. Scanning it across wires tested localization; the response edge matched the beam width, limiting the inference. Distant counts were attributed to accidental coincidences. Separate electron scans measured pulse delay versus position, comparing gas mixtures and pulse-height-dependent electronics.[ref]
Thresholds rejected small pulses, reducing detection efficiency. Wire-independence tests did not establish unlimited separation of overlapping tracks.[ref]
Muon antineutrino Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
The antineutrino associated with the muon flavour of the weak charged current has zero electric charge and lepton number in the usual production-and-detection description. A negative muon decays to an electron, an electron antineutrino and a muon neutrino; the charge-conjugate process instead produces the muon antineutrino.
Muon-neutrino electron recoil spectrum Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
For an especially simple neutral current example, scatter a muon neutrino elastically from an initially stationary unpolarized electron:Here is the final electron kinetic energy, is the incident neutrino energy, and is the Weinberg angle. These are electron chiral couplings in the vertex convention of neutral-current vector and axial couplings. The chosen muon neutrino elastic channel has no additional W boson exchange amplitude; the electron-neutrino elastic channel would have one. Other charged-current final states can become kinematically accessible at sufficiently high incident energies and are not part of this elastic model.
Use natural units , retain only tree-level Feynman diagrams, and take the contact limit with . Neglect electron-mass terms relative to , radiative corrections and detector response. Then is the Fermi constant. The approximate endpoint replaces the exact elastic endpoint . The omitted leading mass-dependent interference term in is . Thus the approximation is not appropriate for arbitrarily soft neutrinos.
The shape follows from the two chiral contributions to the massless scattering amplitude. The spin sum gives terms proportional to and in Mandelstam variables; in this limit , giving the square . The two electron chiralities do not interfere when the relevant mass corrections are dropped. Replacing the neutrino by its antineutrino exchanges which coupling multiplies each kinematic term. This is the same chiral angular weighting that appears in neutrino scattering on an antiquark, now with a target whose couplings are particularly simple.
Integrating the two elementary terms givesFor an original teaching example choose , so and . This is a stipulated parameter, not a measurement of the Weinberg angle. ThenThe normalized probability density function is , not the unnormalized differential cross section. Its endpoints have ratio two, and the fraction with is . The antineutrino spectrum happens to coincide at this chosen parameter because ; this equality is not a general prediction for arbitrary Weinberg angles.
Unlike a visible electron recoil, the scattered neutrino is unrecorded. A measured recoil spectrum must therefore be compared with incident neutrino flux, energy distribution, acceptance, detection efficiency and backgrounds. A shape or rate tests a specified theoretical model only after these experimental ingredients have been supplied.
NADPH Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-20
NADPH is the reduced form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate. It carries electrons used in synthesis; in the Calvin cycle it becomes the oxidized form NADP+, available for reuse by light-dependent reactions. NADPH and ATP serve different roles even though both connect light capture to carbon fixation.
NADP+ Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-20
NADP+ is the oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate. It can accept electrons to form NADPH; the light-dependent reactions supply this conversion during oxygenic photosynthesis.
Nearest-neighbour model of graphene Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
Take a planar honeycomb lattice with two sites per primitive cell and one localized atomic orbital per site. In this explicitly idealized tight-binding model, all three nearest-neighbour hopping matrix elements are , with ; there is no on-site offset or further-neighbour hopping. Ignore electron interactions and treat physical spin as a separate degeneracy. Let the bond length be , and choose the three vectors from an site to its neighbours asThe Bloch state amplitudes on form a two-component vector. A consistent phase convention gives the HamiltonianIts characteristic equation is , giving the two displayed energy bands. The two-component structure comes from the two sites, rather than two values of physical spin. This is a particularly small matrix model in which a crystal's geometry creates an unexpected low-energy law.

The surface shows the calculated bands near one zero of , with distance in units of inverse bond length and energy in units of the hopping magnitude. These are model energies, not measured band data. The material in that paper was layered graphite; the single-sheet model here isolates one simpler part of the problem.[ref]

Nested hydrogen-helium ionization zones Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-20
In a uniform sharp-front approximation, an inner zone of radius lies inside a shell ending at , within the hydrogen ionization front . For nuclear densities , the electron densities are , and in the three zones. Thus the hydrogen recombination integral is . The helium integrals are and . These are balanced against species-specific effective photon budgets, not three independently reused cumulative stellar photon counts.
Neutral current Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-20
The weak neutral current couples the Z boson to a fermion without changing its electric charge. Its vector and axial-vector coefficients depend on weak isospin, electric charge, and the weak mixing angle.
The neutral current transfers no electric charge at a fermion vertex; “neutral” does not mean that every participating particle is uncharged. For example, transfers energy and momentum to an electron through Z boson exchange. By contrast, a charged current can convert a muon neutrino into a muon, as in . Both processes conserve total electric charge. A photon also carries no electric charge, but an active neutrino has no electromagnetic charge coupling: its neutral current is a distinct weak interaction.
The experimentally useful contrast on a nucleon target iswhere is a nucleon and is an allowed final state of hadrons. The charged current makes a charged lepton available for identification; the outgoing neutrino in a neutral current leaves no bubble-chamber track. A sample of hadronic events without an identified muon therefore poses an experimental question: how many could instead be neutron interactions, or charged current events whose muon was missed? The answer requires a detector-response and background analysis, not merely an inspection for an absent line.
Neutrino-electron elastic scattering 2026-10-20
An elastic weak interaction of a neutrino with an electron. For a stationary electron of mass and an effectively massless incident neutrino of energy , the maximum recoil kinetic energy in natural units is . This kinematic limit does not specify the interaction probability.
Neutrino event classification model Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
How can the relative abundance of tracks and showers distinguish hypotheses? Consider an original teaching model, with chosen inputs throughout. Condition on a sample of selected events, each assigned exactly one of two labels: track or shower. Multitrack events and unclassified events lie outside this model. A shower label need not identify an electron; background can imitate it. Conversely, a true electron interaction need not receive a shower label.
Let be the background fraction among selected events. Among the selected signal events, let be the fraction whose associated charged lepton is an electron, with the remainder associated with a muon. These are fractions after event selection, rather than fractions of the incident neutrino particle flux. Define the conditional probabilitiesHere and describe classification within the selected sample. They are not measured historical detection efficiencies. The law of total probability gives the overall shower probabilityThis formula is the bridge between an interaction hypothesis and a visible label. It keeps beam contamination, background and mistaken classification conceptually distinct: genuine electron neutrino interactions belong in , while non-signal events belong in .
Assume independent random variables for the event labels, all with this same . If counts shower labels, every specified pattern with showers has probability . Counting those patterns with a binomial coefficient yields the binomial distributionThe track count is , so its expected value is . At fixed , the two counts cannot fluctuate independently. The variance above measures sampling fluctuations under the stipulated model, not uncertainty in , , or .
Choose , , , and . Compare a signal with only muon-associated interactions () against one with equal selected electron- and muon-associated interactions (). These give and , respectively. Their expected shower counts are and ; their expected track counts are and . A background-only model with the specified gives showers and tracks on average. These are expectations, so they need not be integers.
Chosen binomial distribution model: expected track and shower counts, with the shower-count distributions
. Original calculations for forty selected events and the stipulated classification and background probabilities. No historical counts, fitted efficiencies or reconstructed significance are plotted. Details. For a hypothetical observation , the likelihood ratio of the two signal models isThe binomial coefficient cancels because the same hypothetical sample is used in both likelihoods. This ratio is not the probability that either hypothesis is true. A separate original check gives , and for the muon-associated, equal-mixture and specified background-only models, respectively.
Why are the controls essential? If the background-only model may choose any , taking can fit the observed shower fraction. Counts alone then fail to distinguish it from a signal model. Independent background measurements and calibrated particle identification constrain that freedom. Changing the decay path additionally tests where the candidate-producing particles originate. The power of the experiment comes from combining apparatus interventions with event classification; the small binomial distribution model isolates only the latter part of that reasoning.
