Set . Free propagation in the homogeneous expanding universe redshifts frequencies by and dilutes physical number density by . Number conservation in corresponding frequency intervals gives
Inserting the initial Planck spectrum, the factor becomes , while its exponent is . Hence
The shape is preserved even without collisions maintaining thermal equilibrium; it follows from redshift of an initially Planckian distribution.
For the total photon number density put . For the energy density include the energy of each photon. Then
where and . Both integrals are finite positive constants. Thus and , with the extra power supplied by photon-energy redshift.
The photon number density is obtained by integrating the Planck photon distribution. With ,
The integral converges, since its integrand is of order near zero and decays exponentially at infinity. Hence , with independent of temperature.
For equilibrium radiation undergoing adiabatic expansion, the total entropy in a comoving volume is constant. Since the entropy density is , this means is constant. A comoving volume scales as the cube of the scale factor, so
This agrees with the cosmological redshift of each photon frequency. The conclusion uses entropy conservation during the expansion.
For the reaction , chemical equilibrium requires because thermal photons have zero chemical potential. Insert the nonrelativistic Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution number densities and use :
For ground-state hydrogen, including its spin states, , ; hence the degeneracy factor is one. Since , the right side is .
Charge neutrality gives , while baryon conservation gives . Consequently and . Inverting the preceding ratio and inserting the photon number density with gives the hydrogen-only Saha equation
Writing , its coefficient is , consistent with the rounded . The negligible mass-ratio correction and ground-state approximation are the assumptions behind this form.
In the local orthonormal tetrad, the components of the photon number current are
They are respectively the photon number density and the photon number flux. Thus is the photon number four-current, not an energy current or an electric charge current. Photons carry no electric charge. For the isotropic background,
Integrating the covariant Boltzmann equation over the invariant mass-shell measure, with vanishing momentum-boundary flux, gives
where is the collision operator in the covariant streaming equation. Therefore
Collisionless photon propagation satisfies this condition, as do Thomson scattering and ordinary Compton scattering when all participating photons are counted: each collision has one incoming and one outgoing photon. Photon emission, photon absorption, bremsstrahlung, double Compton scattering and electron-positron annihilation in cosmology or its inverse generally give a nonzero number source. A cancellation of net creation and destruction can nevertheless make the integrated source vanish even when individual number-changing reactions occur. Cosmological redshift itself changes photon energy, not photon number; in an expanding homogeneous universe a conserved photon number current gives .
The photon number density in a thermal zero-chemical-potential bath scales as . The heating factor from the previous calculation therefore increases photon number at fixed physical volume by . The decay is nonbaryonic and preserves baryon number, giving baryon-to-photon dilution by entropy injection:
If the decay occurs after the light-element abundances have frozen out in Big Bang nucleosynthesis but before the epoch probed by the cosmic microwave background, abundance measurements infer the earlier , whereas the CMB measures the later . In this simple scenario,
A significant discrepancy in this direction could indicate photon entropy injection by . Several light-element abundances help distinguish a changed baryon density from a changed expansion history. If decay occurs during nucleosynthesis, the inference instead requires time-dependent and a modified expansion history; the before/after comparison cannot automatically be applied to every decay time allowed in the question.
The reaction maintaining chemical equilibrium is
For and negligible chemical potentials, the electron and Positron are dilute and obey the nonrelativistic equilibrium number density. Including two spin states for each particle,
The photon number density is , so the electron-positron equilibrium pair abundance below the electron mass is
If denotes only one of the charge-conjugate species, this expression is divided by two.
Here is the cosmological scale factor, is cosmic time and is the Hubble parameter. With a length, labels positively curved, flat and negatively curved spatial sections. This is unrelated to Question 1's specific orbital energy. The density is mass-equivalent energy density: has energy-per-volume units. In the displayed Friedmann equation has units ; the geometric cosmological constant is . For a separately conserved fluid of constant equation of state , the cosmological perfect-fluid continuity equation gives , so : zero for pressureless matter and one for radiation. With several fluids, sum their densities in the expansion equation and evolve each separately.
Setting cosmological spatial curvature and the cosmological constant to zero gives the mass-equivalent cosmological critical density,
Its energy-density version is ; keeping this distinction is necessary when dividing a radiation energy density by below.
In an Einstein-de Sitter universe, integrates to and . With ,
Here are the two epoch redshifts relative to today. This is elapsed cosmic time, not comoving distance divided by .
For collisionless preservation of a Planck spectrum, use frequency redshift as well as photon-number conservation. Let , so a frequency bin now corresponds to and initially. Collisionless propagation conserves photon number in the corresponding comoving bin:
For an initial blackbody spectrum, insert its Planck distribution to obtain
The factors from the numerator cancel the spectral dilution factor, while the exponent changes only the temperature. Integrating gives photon number density proportional to and radiation energy density proportional to . Conservation of total photon number alone would not guarantee a blackbody spectrum shape; the frequency-bin mapping and absence of injection or spectral redistribution are essential.
For the numerical density comparisons, the supplied Hubble constant is . Taking and gives
The radiation specified here is cosmic microwave background photons only. Adding a relic neutrino density would change the photon-only matter-radiation equality result. The rounded present matter and vacuum fractions sum to one without this small photon contribution; the requested pairwise density comparisons do not require silently renormalizing them.
For the final unlabelled flight-time request, insert the case-(c) value into the stipulated Einstein-de Sitter formula:
The two model ages are approximately and years. This uses exactly the instructed matter-only model with the same . It is not an exact age difference in the matter-plus-vacuum cosmology; a high-redshift matter-era normalization using would be a different approximation.
Photon gas 2026-10-13
A photon gas is a collection of photons described statistically as radiation. Here the equilibrium model is homogeneous, isotropic electromagnetic radiation in vacuum at temperature : each photon has energy , with momentum and frequency , and there are two independent transverse states of electromagnetic polarization. An absorbing cavity with walls at a common temperature provides a way to establish this thermal equilibrium. The bulk formulas assume cavity dimensions much larger than the typical wavelength , so the electromagnetic mode density in a box can replace individual cavity modes by a continuum. [ref]
The crucial constraint is whether photon emission and photon absorption, or other number-changing processes, can equilibrate the photon population. When they can, photon number is not an independently conserved quantity and the equilibrium photon chemical potential is . For each polarization and frequency, the mean occupation number then follows the Bose-Einstein distribution:
If number-changing processes are ineffective but number-conserving interactions redistribute energy, a constrained Bose-Einstein distribution can instead have with chemical potential fixed by the number constraint. Thus thermal equilibrium with respect to energy exchange alone does not establish . The zero value can also persist in an already prepared Planck photon distribution during suitable subsequent evolution; continual photon emission is not required to preserve it. [ref]
Combining with the two-polarization density of states, , gives the Planck photon distribution and the spectral photon energy density:
Here is the spectral radiance in Planck's law; is stored energy density per unit frequency, not outgoing power per area. Their different units are connected by the full-sphere solid angle and the speed of light . The Boltzmann constant is , and is the Planck constant. [ref]
The equilibrium equation of state is particularly simple:
The radiation constant is the same constant called in black-body radiation; is the Stefan-Boltzmann constant. An outline of the energy density calculation substitutes and uses . The radiation pressure follows because the angular average of the squared directional component of photon momentum is for isotropy; the thermodynamic derivation of blackbody radiation pressure supplies an independent route. These formulas describe the radiation contribution, not the cavity walls. The isotropic massless relation survives a different isotropic spectrum, whereas the coefficient in requires the zero-chemical potential Planck photon distribution.
For a computed example with stipulated , the photon energy density is and the radiation pressure is . The photon number density in the International System of Units is
Here is the Riemann zeta function. The mean photon energy differs from the energy at the peak of a spectral curve: counting photons and weighting them by energy emphasize different frequencies. The calculations use the exact International System of Units values of the Planck constant, Boltzmann constant and speed of light. [ref]

Their different shapes show why a photon-counting spectrum and an energy density spectrum have different peaks. Details.
A motivating observation is the cosmic microwave background spectrum measured by the Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) aboard COBE. Its apparatus used a polarizing Michelson interferometer, with one input viewing a roughly seven-degree sky patch and the other an internal blackbody. Scanning mirrors changed the optical path length difference; heat-sensitive detectors recorded the varying power, and Fourier transform spectroscopy recovered the spectral difference. Operation outside the terrestrial atmosphere removed atmospheric emission and absorption, while shielding and cooling the optics in a helium cryostat suppressed the instrument's own radiation. [ref]
Absolute calibration came from moving an external blackbody into the sky aperture, filling the same beam used for the sky. This was an iron-loaded epoxy absorber shaped as a re-entrant cone. Repeated reflections made it a close approximation to a blackbody, while thermometers supplied its temperature. Mather and colleagues explicitly evaluated reflections, temperature gradients, radiation leaking through the material and leakage around its edge. These are limits on how faithfully the calibrator realizes thermal equilibrium radiation, rather than details that can be eliminated merely by calling it black. [ref]
During sky observations the internal blackbody temperature was adjusted to nearly null the spectral difference, reducing gain and drift errors. Fixsen and colleagues' 1996 analysis used calibrated spectra over wavenumbers to , about to . They separated the sky's spatially uniform component, its dipole and Galactic emission, and varied sky cuts and foreground templates as controls. The resulting cosmic microwave background spectrum agreed with a single Planck function, with reported RMS deviations below 50 parts per million of its peak brightness. This is a residual statistic over the analyzed spectrum, not a pointwise relative error bound at every frequency. [ref]
The observation motivates using a photon gas as a physical model rather than merely a formal counting exercise. Its interpretation has a clear boundary: agreement with Planck's law constrains departures from an equilibrium spectral shape within the calibrated band and foreground assumptions; it does not directly measure radiation pressure or entropy density of a photon gas. Nor does it establish that today's cosmic microwave background is continually re-equilibrating with matter. A previously thermal spectrum can retain its Planck function shape as expansion of the universe lowers every photon frequency in the same proportion. The usefulness of the model is that one measured spectral temperature, together with its equilibrium assumptions, predicts energy density, radiation pressure, photon number density and entropy density of a photon gas consistently.
Photon number current 2026-10-06
In an orthonormal tetrad, is the photon number density and is its number flux. Integrating the Boltzmann equation gives when momentum-boundary terms vanish. Collisionless propagation and photon-number-conserving scattering give zero divergence. Photon emission, photon absorption, electron-positron annihilation in cosmology, bremsstrahlung and double Compton scattering generally do not. This is a number current, not an electric charge current: photons are neutral.
For hydrogen ionization fraction of order one, the hydrogen-only Saha equation gives . The baryon-to-photon ratio and photon number density imply . Therefore and the displayed logarithmic balance follows. A small supplies many ionizing photons per baryon, so neutral hydrogen forms at a temperature much smaller than its Hydrogen binding energy. The numerical temperature depends on the ionization-fraction convention and on whether equilibrium remains valid.
