Separability of a tensor 2026-10-14
In a two-factor tensor product over a field, a pure tensor is also called a separable or decomposable tensor: it can be expressed as one product . Every tensor is a finite sum of pure tensors, but a sum need not itself be a pure tensor.[ref]
Tensor Products I by Keith Conrad. §3, printed p. 9: elementary, simple, decomposable, and pure tensors; Example 2.1, printed pp. 4–5: outer products do not fill the matrix space
For finite-dimensional vector spaces, the tensor-product coefficient matrix gives a decisive test: a nonzero tensor is a pure tensor exactly when its matrix rank is one. Indeed, every column of is a scalar multiple of . Conversely, if all columns of a nonzero matrix are multiples of one nonzero column , collect their multipliers in to obtain . The zero tensor is also a pure tensor, for example , but its matrix rank is zero.
In , the tensoris nonseparable: its matrix rank is two and its determinant is one, whereas . Directly, trying requires and . The first two equations force all four scalars nonzero, contradicting the others. In contrast, products sharing a factor do combine: . Thus being written as two summands alone does not establish nonseparability.
Shear mapping Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
A horizontal shear fixes the horizontal axis pointwise and sends to . Its determinant is one and both eigenvalues are one. A nonzero shear preserves area but generally changes lengths and angles. Composing a shear with a planar rotation can produce a symmetric stretch; having determinant one alone does not make a linear map a shear.
Shoelace formula 2026-10-20
For a simple polygon with cyclically ordered vertices of a polygon , its signed area is , with indices read cyclically. Reversing the traversal changes the sign; taking the absolute value gives the area. Each summand is a two-dimensional determinant.
A matrix with entries in is a totally unimodular matrix if every column has at most two nonzero entries, with opposite signs when both occur. To prove this, induct on the size of a square submatrix. A zero column gives determinant zero, a one-entry column reduces by cofactor expansion, and if every column has two entries then all column sums vanish, giving dependent rows. The total unimodularity of directed incidence matrices is a central instance.
Signed curvature 2026-10-14
Fix the standard orientation of a vector space on the plane. For an oriented regular curve in that plane, let be its unit tangent vector and let be its left unit normal, obtained by an anticlockwise rotation through . Its signed curvature , also commonly written , is defined byHere increases with the chosen traversal and is the determinant. Positive signed curvature means turning left; negative signed curvature means turning right. The left unit normal exists even when ; when it points opposite to the principal normal vector. See Ghomi's university lecture notes, section 1.10.
For an arbitrary regular parametric curve traversed with increasing , the signed curvature isFor the anticlockwise circle , the numerator is and the denominator is , so . For the clockwise traversal , the numerator is , so , while unsigned curvature is in both cases. On this circle points inward for anticlockwise traversal and outward for clockwise traversal. For any simple closed regular curve traversed anticlockwise, is the inward unit normal, but signed curvature can still be negative along nonconvex portions.
Reversing traversal reverses signed curvature and the left normal, but preserves the bend
. Details. To see why the formula uses the cube of the speed, write and . The term parallel to contributes zero to the determinant, giving . Under a reparametrization with , the numerator gains a factor and the denominator gains . Thus orientation-preserving reparametrization preserves signed curvature, while reversing traversal changes its sign at corresponding points. Unsigned curvature is preserved in either case.
Locally write the unit tangent vector as . Differentiating with respect to arc length gives : signed curvature records the direction as well as the amount of turning. Its integral therefore measures net turning, as in the turning tangent theorem; the integral of is total curvature and counts both left and right turns positively.
For independent -variate multivariate normal observations with unknown mean and unrestricted positive-definite covariance matrix, the centered scatter has rank at most . If it is singular, choose the mean to be the sample mean and shrink the covariance on a null direction of the scatter. The quadratic likelihood term stays fixed while the determinant tends to zero, so the density likelihood tends to infinity. Thus a nonsingular covariance maximum likelihood estimate exists only when the centered scatter is positive definite; for a nonsingular Gaussian population this occurs almost surely exactly when .
Let be an invertible matrix and a real square matrix of the same odd order. If the displayed identity holds, multiply it on the left by to obtain . Taking determinants givesThus . Since is real, the first factor is positive, forcing to be a singular matrix. Both odd dimension and reality matter: an invertible real antisymmetric matrix exists in even dimension, while over the complex numbers a squared determinant can equal .
Singular matrix Created 2026-09-29 Updated 2026-10-18
An square matrix over a field, with , is singular when it has no matrix inverse. Geometrically, its linear map loses at least one input direction: some nonzero vector satisfies , so . Over the real numbers, the following family makes that loss visible:
Compression by becomes collapse only at
. The square retains two-dimensional extent for and , but maps to a segment at . The orange points come from three inputs with the same first coordinate and different second coordinates. They coincide only at . This is exact illustrative geometry, not measured data. Details. For this diagonal matrix, . Whenever , the input can be recovered as and the kernel is . At , the kernel becomes : the entire second coordinate is forgotten. Consequently has no solution if , and has the solution straight line , , if . A singular matrix therefore need not make a particular linear system inconsistent; it prevents unique recovery when that linear system is consistent.
For an square matrix, all these tests describe the same failure:Here is the field of scalars. Equivalently, the columns are linearly dependent, the linear map is neither injective nor surjective, and some outputs cannot be reached. See the invertible matrix equivalences and Strang's MIT 18.06SC lecture summary, Multiplication and inverse matrices, p. 2. Over an infinite field, every consistent linear system for a singular matrix has infinitely many solutions; over a finite field with elements and nullity , it has exactly solutions. This follows by adding each kernel vector to one solution.
The square hypothesis is essential. For an matrix, injectivity means matrix rank (full column rank), whereas surjectivity means matrix rank (full row rank). A rectangular matrix can satisfy one condition without the other; its kernel and image of a linear map give the useful tests without calling it a singular matrix.
Exact singularity also differs from sensitivity. For , is an invertible matrix, but its smallest singular value is and its condition number in Euclidean norm is . A change changes the recovered input by : with and , an output change of causes an input change of . These are exact toy values, not measurements. The condition number quantifies this sensitivity before a direction is lost; see Steve Marschner, Condition numbers, §2. A small determinant alone is not a reliable sensitivity test: has determinant yet condition number one for every nonzero real , since both singular values shrink equally.
Skew-Hermitian decomposition of a unitary matrix Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
The displayed parts of a unitary matrix are skew-Hermitian matrices. Expanding gives and . They admit a common orthonormal eigenbasis. For a unitary eigenvalue , the corresponding part eigenvalues are and . If , then , so these are exactly its real and imaginary parts and both are real skew-symmetric matrices. Such an invertible antisymmetric matrix has even dimension, by its determinant. If one part has distinct eigenvalues, commutation alone shows its one-dimensional eigenspaces are preserved by the other part.
Slater determinant 2026-10-14
A Slater determinant extends two-particle antisymmetrization to fermions. Here contains position and spin or other internal variables. Distinct orthonormal one-particle states give the normalized wavefunction displayed in the title. Repeating a one-particle state repeats a column of the determinant, so the wavefunction vanishes. Exchanging particle slots exchanges rows and reverses its sign. A general fermionic quantum state can be a quantum superposition of Slater determinants; it need not be one Slater determinant.
SO(3) group Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-07
The SO(3) group consists of real three-by-three orthogonal matrices with determinant one. It acts by rotation in three dimensions. Its group manifold is , since the Adjoint double cover from SU(2) to SO(3) identifies antipodal points of the three-sphere.
SO(7) group 2026-10-25
The compact group of real seven-by-seven orthogonal matrices with determinant one. Its Lie algebra has B3 root system. Its simply connected double cover is the Spin group ; the eight-dimensional spin representation belongs to that cover and does not descend to SO(7).
Spectrum of a scalar matrix plus a rank-one projector Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
Let be a real unit vector in -dimensional Euclidean space. Then is a rank-one orthogonal projection: , while for orthogonal to . Consequently the symmetric matrix has eigenvalue on the line spanned by and eigenvalue on its orthogonal complement. Any orthonormal basis of that complement completes to an orthonormal eigenbasis. ThusThe trace and determinant formulas remain valid when one of these eigenvalues is zero. When , all nonzero vectors have the same eigenvalue, and the chosen splitting is optional.
Spin contamination 2026-10-20
A wavefunction intended for a specified total-spin state contains components of other total spins. For an unrestricted determinant with one alpha and one beta orbital, in units of .
For an incompressible vertical-field mode, frozen-in magnetic tension supplies a spring of frequency . Its displacement satisfies and . Their determinant gives the ideal magnetorotational dispersion relation. A weak spring transfers angular momentum from the faster inner element to the slower outer element, causing inward and outward migration that increase their separation when angular velocity decreases outward. A sufficiently strong spring instead supplies a restoring force.

Square matrix Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-14
A matrix with the same number of rows and columns represents an endomorphism of a finite-dimensional vector space after choosing a basis. Square matrices support trace, determinant, powers and the matrix exponential.
In take and . Then and , but has determinant and a negative eigenvalue. In contrast, for commuting positive elements is positive in the commutative function algebra supplied by continuous functional calculus. The obstruction is noncommutativity, not a failure of the scalar inequality.
Standard skew tableau determinant 2026-10-14
Here , with zero entries for negative factorial arguments. Extract the squarefree monomial from the skew Jacobi–Trudi identity. A product contributes because its distinct labels are assigned to the factors in that many ways. Summing determinant signs proves the formula, since a squarefree semistandard Young tableau is a standard skew Young tableau.
Stern-Brocot tree 2026-10-20
A binary tree enumerating every positive reduced fraction exactly once. Begin with boundary fractions and ; between neighboring fractions , insert their mediant and recurse into the two new intervals. The determinant relation is preserved, and the new denominator is .
Let be a Noetherian ring that is an integral domain, and let be a nonzero proper ideal. If for some , the nonzero finitely generated module satisfies . Choose generators and write with . The adjugate matrix identity implies that annihilates . This determinant is for some , since every term except the constant term contains an entry from .
The determinant trick has thus supplied . A nonzero element of and multiplicative cancellation in an integral domain force , contradicting properness of . Therefore all positive powers of an ideal are distinct in this setting. Since they have the same radical of an ideal, there are infinitely many ideals with radical .
