Principal minor Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-14
A principal minor is the determinant of a square submatrix selected using the same index set for rows and columns. For a three-by-three matrix, the coefficient of in its monic characteristic polynomial is the sum of its three principal minors of order two.
Principal submatrix Created 2026-10-25 Updated 2026-10-31
The square matrix obtained by retaining the same index set of rows and columns of a square matrix . Its determinant is a principal minor. A leading principal submatrix uses the first indices.
Projection kernel determinant integration Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-25
Suppose an integral kernel reproduces under convolution and has integrable diagonal with integral , and the displayed single-variable integrals exist. In the determinant , permutations fixing contribute after integration. For every permutation on letters there are ways to insert into a cycle; convolution contracts the two adjacent factors, and insertion reverses the permutation sign. These terms contribute . This proves the formula without a symmetry assumption on the kernel.
For two projectively equivalent connections that are Levi-Civita connections, contraction of their difference gives . The Jacobi formula gives . Subtraction proves the displayed expression. The two determinant densities transform by the same coordinate Jacobian factor, so their ratio is a scalar and its derivative a covector. The formula is a necessary consequence of projective equivalence, not a test asserting that arbitrary metric tensors have identical geodesics.
Proper orthochronous Lorentz transformation 2026-10-25
A Lorentz transformation with determinant that preserves future-directed timelike four-vectors. Equivalently, it belongs to the identity component of the Lorentz group. For the Minkowski metric , its matrix satisfies and . Such transformations preserve the future light cone, so the retarded Green function of the d'Alembert operator transforms as a Lorentz scalar.
For normalized pure states and , the trace distance and quantum fidelity satisfyThe last two expressions distinguish the unsquared quantum fidelity from the squared quantum fidelity. Identical pure states give , and orthogonal pure states give . The equality need not hold for mixed states; the Fuchs-van de Graaf inequalities give bounds in that case.
Brief proof: for two distinct pure states, their two-dimensional span contains the nonzero part of . This restriction has trace zero and determinant , hence eigenvalues . Its trace norm is twice the positive eigenvalue, giving trace distance . For identical pure states, directly.

Quadratic discrete predator-prey map 2026-10-14
This map equals an explicit unit-step update of a logistic predator-prey differential equation. Its coexistence fixed point is , requiring . Its trace and determinant are and . The Schur stability criterion gives stability precisely when and . The coexistence flip at is subcritical on , with effective cubic coefficient when the eigenvector has first component one. The unit-circle crossing is a supercritical Neimark–Sacker bifurcation away from the strong resonances of a planar map ; in the eigenvector normalization its cubic radial coefficient is . The whole nonnegative quadrant is not forward invariant, because can become negative. Local fixed-point stability is therefore not a global population-dynamics classification.

Quadratic form of a squared cross product 2026-10-25
For real three-dimensional vectors, Lagrange's identity gives with symmetric matrix . For , the normal line spanned by is its kernel and the perpendicular plane is its eigenspace. Consequently is positive semidefinite, has rank two and has zero determinant. For , it is the zero matrix.
Quasistatic vertical-field magnetoconvection 2026-10-14
When the magnetic field supplies instantaneous damping rather than an evolving magnetic perturbation, the roll amplitudes obey a two-variable linear system with trace . Its determinant vanishes at the displayed stationary threshold. Therefore its initial instability cannot be a Hopf bifurcation. This reduced model must not be confused with a three-variable magnetoconvection model carrying finite magnetic diffusivity and an additional oscillatory mode.
Qubit state Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-25
A qubit state specifies measurement probabilities, rather than a pre-existing answer to every possible measurement. For a pure state, normalized vectors differing by a global phase represent the same physical state:Equivalently, the pure state is a ray: the one-dimensional complex linear subspace spanned by any nonzero representative. Dividing a nonzero vector by its norm fixes its length, but leaves the global phase free. The density operator is unchanged because . In contrast, multiplying only one nonzero component by changes a relative quantum phase and can change measurement probabilities. [ref].
After choosing a global phase, every pure state of a qubit can be writtenAt or , the parameter does not distinguish physical states: only one component survives. Elsewhere it is the relative quantum phase. The corresponding unit Bloch vector is on the existing Bloch sphere. Its angles describe a space of states; for a photon polarization qubit they are not the photon's position or direction of travel. [ref].
The Born rule in the computational basis gives and . These probabilities discard . In the Hadamard basis , adding or subtracting the probability amplitudes instead givesThis last equality follows by substituting the angular representative. In the basis , the same calculation givesThus both the real and imaginary parts of quantum coherence can be observed, using different measurement settings. For example, and both give , but the first gives and the second . A global phase could never cause this difference.
Identical computational-basis probabilities can hide different relative phases and coherence
. Exact model probabilities for , compared with the incoherent mixture . Each curve requires repeated preparations measured in the indicated basis; these are not experimental data. Details. For a general qubit state, write its density matrix in the computational basis asThese are exactly the Hermitian, unit-trace, positive semidefinite constraints. Positivity means every eigenvalue is nonnegative, not that every matrix entry is nonnegative. The general definition is given in density matrix. [ref].
For this two-by-two matrix, the explicit constraint follows from its determinant, : with trace one, a nonnegative determinant and real eigenvalues rule out a negative eigenvalue. Its eigenvalues areThe pure states have and eigenvalues ; the mixed states have strict inequality and two positive eigenvalues. For a normalized representative, and . A statistical preparation , with and , averages probabilities, rather than adding probability amplitudes. Such a preparation is mixed if the positive-weight vectors do not all represent the same ray. A reduced density matrix of an entangled pair can also be mixed even when the pair has a pure state. [ref].
For a concrete check, the pure state and the mixed state obtained by preparing with probability and with probability haveBoth have trace one and the same computational-basis measurement probabilities. Their eigenvalues are respectively and ; the respective values of their purity of a density operator are and . Their Hadamard basis plus probabilities are respectively and . By contrast, setting would give determinant and eigenvalue : normalized diagonal entries alone do not make a valid qubit state.
The same constraints become especially beautiful in the Bloch ball representation. With the Pauli matrices and the identity operator ,The eigenvalues are , so the Bloch sphere is precisely the pure state boundary, and is the maximally mixed centre. For each axis , the Born rule gives . This unifies a geometric picture, matrix positivity, and experimental frequencies in one description. For the equatorial family in the phase diagram, and ; replacing it by erases the transverse components and every fringe. See quantum state tomography for how independent ensembles measured along the three axes estimate these components. [ref].
Radiative-convective climate column 2026-10-18
A radiative-convective climate column applies a radiative-convective equilibrium model to the vertical thermal structure relevant to climate change. Radiative transfer determines heating and cooling; convective adjustment represents unresolved vertical redistribution when the chosen atmospheric lapse rate is too steep. Radiative equilibrium alone need not give a physically admissible lower-atmospheric profile.
In 1967, Syukuro Manabe and Richard T. Wetherald computed equilibrium with prescribed relative humidity, allowing atmospheric water vapor to change with temperature. Their average-cloud case warmed by for carbon dioxide increasing from 300 to 600 parts per million, versus with fixed absolute humidity. These are model outputs, not measured warming. The comparison isolates an important water-vapor feedback.[ref]
Thermal Equilibrium of the Atmosphere with a Given Distribution of Relative Humidity by Syukuro Manabe and Richard T. Wetherald. Manabe and Wetherald, 1967, abstract; Section 4b, Table 5 and Fig. 16
An original two-temperature calculation exposes the bookkeeping. Let an opaque surface absorb solar irradiance and emit blackbody thermal radiation . A single isothermal atmospheric layer transmits all sunlight and absorbs a fraction of surface infrared emission, emitting both upward and downward. This is a grey thermal-band emissivity, with . Let be upward nonradiative heat flux, and let be heat capacities per unit area. Then conservation of energy givesThe two equations sum toHere is outgoing longwave radiation. Both and downward atmospheric emission cancel internally: they redistribute energy without creating it. The factor two in atmospheric emission counts two faces. Dropping the downward face would spoil the surface budget. Each right-hand term has units ; each has units .
Choose , and . At equilibrium, and , giving and . Direct substitution gives surface balance and atmospheric balance . These deliberately chosen fluxes illustrate the model; they are not an observed global budget or a reconstruction of the 1967 calculation. Prescribing illustrates heat transfer accounting but does not close a realistic convection law.
For fixed , the positive-temperature equilibrium is locally stable. Put and . The Jacobian matrix of the temperature equations has trace and determinant . Thus both eigenvalues have negative real part. Temperature-dependent climate feedbacks alter this test. A single grey layer also omits the optical spectrum, cloud structure and the independent thermal behavior of the troposphere and stratosphere.
Rank-one matrix update 2026-10-14
A rank-one matrix update changes a matrix by an outer product . For real vectors , its action on an input vector isThe dot product reads one scalar from the input, and the correction moves the output along . All correction outputs therefore lie in one linear span. If either vector is zero, the update is zero; otherwise the correction is a rank-one matrix. The full updated matrix need not have rank one.
For example, chooseThe update sends to the correction . Although all four entries change, there is only one direction of correction. Adding it to the identity matrix gives .
This special structure allows existing work to be reused. The matrix determinant lemma updates the determinant using one scalar, and the Sherman–Morrison formula updates the matrix inverse using an outer product. Such formulas are useful when a linear system changes slightly after a new observation or a parameter adjustment: the unchanged part can retain its LU decomposition. The term rank-one describes the rank of the correction, not the size of the entry changes. [ref]

Rational representation 2026-10-14
A rational representation is a group homomorphism whose matrix coefficients are regular functions on the affine algebraic group. For the general linear group, those functions are polynomials in matrix entries and the inverse determinant. The word rational does not permit poles at points of the group.
Rational representation of the general linear group Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
The matrix coefficients of a rational action belong to its coordinate ring . Multiplying the action by a sufficiently large determinant twist clears all determinant denominators and produces a polynomial representation. Irreducible rational actions are indexed by decreasing integer highest weights, with negative coordinates allowed.

In a homogeneous isotropic elastic half-space , a Rayleigh wave with factor has two depth factors and . Substitution into the Navier-Cauchy equation factors the amplitude determinant into longitudinal and transverse factors, giving the displayed exponents. Strict exponential decay requires . The longitudinal constituent has ; the transverse constituent has . The free-surface traction conditions select a combination of both constituents.

Writing complex coordinates as converts the unitary representation into the indicated real matrix. It preserves the Euclidean metric because , and its real determinant is . Thus even embeds in . Real Grassmann Gaussian integral 2026-10-14
For an antisymmetric matrix , a Berezin integral extracts the top coefficient of the exponential. Expansion into pairings gives the Pfaffian, with a constant sign depending on the order of the differentials. This is a polynomial in the entries of , not the positive square root of its determinant: in dimension two it is proportional to and changes sign with that entry. The identity determines its square but does not discard its orientation.
