Nuclear excited state Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-10-20
A nuclear excited state lies above the same nucleus's ground state in internal energy. spin, parity and approximate isospin help classify it. Single-particle rearrangements, broken pairs and collective deformation/vibration give different excitation patterns and can mix. Below particle-emission thresholds, gamma decay and internal conversion are important de-excitation routes; an excitation energy is not necessarily the energy of every emitted gamma ray in a cascade.
Nuclear fission Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
Nuclear fission splits an atomic nucleus into two major fragments, usually accompanied by emitted neutrons and gamma rays. It can follow neutron absorption or occur spontaneously in some heavy nuclides. When the products have greater total nuclear binding energy, the decrease in rest energy supplies fragment kinetic energy and radiation.
The fragments are often neutron-rich and undergo subsequent beta decay, producing an evolving inventory of fission products. Some emitted neutrons can cause further nuclear fission, enabling a nuclear chain reaction; others are absorbed without fission or escape.
The discovery combined chemical and physical evidence. Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann identified barium among products of neutron-irradiated uranium, rather than merely an adjacent heavy element. Lise Meitner and Otto Robert Frisch interpreted this as division of the atomic nucleus and estimated the large released energy from mass differences. Chemical separation identified the unexpected product: the same procedure could separate a radium isotope from barium, whereas the new radioactive activity followed barium. This chemical comparison did not by itself measure every fragment's motion.[ref]

Nuclear force Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-11-05
The residual strong interaction between nucleons. Its long-distance part involves pion exchange and depends on spin and isospin. It is distinct from directly exchanging gluons between color-singlet nucleons.
Why do protons and neutrons bind into an atomic nucleus, even though protons repel electrically? An attractive nuclear force can lower the total energy below that of separated nucleons, producing nuclear binding energy. The deuteron, containing one proton and one neutron, is the simplest such bound state.
In quantum chromodynamics, nucleons are composite colour singlets built from quarks and gluons. Their residual nuclear force has a longest-range strong contribution from one-pion exchange, with additional interactions at shorter distances.[ref]

Nuclear level density 2026-11-05
The nuclear level density is the number of distinct nuclear energy levels per unit excitation energy, after specifying which spin and parity classes are included. In a small interval, the expected level count is approximately . It is commonly expressed per MeV.
At high excitation, individual levels can be too numerous to resolve, so reaction models use a statistical density instead. A density counting each level once differs from a state density that includes every magnetic substate with multiplicity . Known low-lying levels and average neutron-resonance spacings provide experimental normalization constraints.[ref]
Nuclear level reconstruction from energy differences Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
To leading order neglecting nuclear recoil, a measured gamma ray has energy equal to the difference between the upper and lower nuclear energy levels. For a freely recoiling atomic nucleus initially at rest, four-momentum conservation instead giveswhere and are the rest masses of the upper and lower nuclear states. Some transition energy becomes daughter kinetic energy, so high-precision level reconstruction must account for nuclear recoil.
Reconstructing a nuclear gamma ray radiation spectrum amounts to assigning measured photon energies to differences between ordered nuclear energy levels with such corrections where needed. Cascade energy sums constrain the graph, while population-flow balances constrain its orientation and feeding. Experimental central energies need not close exactly; a weighted least squares energy-network fit uses their uncertainties consistently. Multiple graphs can satisfy the same radiation spectrum when coincidence or lifetime information is absent.
Nuclear level scheme 2026-10-18
A nuclear level scheme represents nuclear energy levels and transitions among them. Gamma ray energies constrain pairwise differences; emission counts and coincidence measurements help resolve different schemes having the same difference multiset.
Nuclear mass defect Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-20
The mass deficit of a bound atomic nucleus relative to its separated protons and neutrons. If their rest masses are and , the atomic nucleus has rest mass , and the positive nuclear binding energy is , thenwith the speed of light. Releasing energy when the nucleons bind reduces the rest mass of the bound system without changing the exact count . A neutral atomic mass also includes electron rest masses, reduced by the energy required to separate those bound electrons. Consequently is not the definition of the nuclear mass defect: the reference unit and constituent rest masses must also be accounted for.
Nuclear matrix element Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
A transition-operator matrix element between specified nuclear states. It combines their many-nucleon wavefunctions with the relevant interaction operator. In double beta decay, different assumed mechanisms and nuclear-structure calculations give different matrix elements, so converting a half-life bound to a neutrino-mass bound requires that input. A measured energy endpoint alone does not determine it.

Imaging or therapy using administered radiopharmaceuticals. The distribution of the labelled compound selects biological function or tissue, while emitted radiation provides a measurement or deposited energy.
Nuclear neutron scattering length 2026-10-18
The nuclear neutron scattering length is the effective length coefficient for low-energy nuclear scattering amplitude. For the elementary coherent calculation below, use a bound coherent coefficient for each site, and neglect absorption so that is real. This coefficient describes the atomic nucleus, including its isotope and nuclear spin dependence; it is not proportional to atomic number. Replacing nuclear coefficients by electronic magnetic moments would describe a different scattering channel, with additional direction and spatial-distribution factors, as explained in magnetic neutron diffraction.
Nuclear physics Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-11-05
Nuclear physics studies atomic nuclei, their internal structure and the processes that change them. A nucleus contains protons and neutrons, whose short-range nuclear forces bind them while the Coulomb force repels the protons. The resulting nuclear energy levels and nuclear binding energies connect this subject to the low-energy consequences of quantum chromodynamics. Weak interactions additionally permit changes of nuclear composition through beta decay.
The mass defect makes the connection between structure and released energy quantitative. For a nucleus with protons, neutrons and nuclear mass , its nuclear binding energy isA bound nucleus has less rest energy than its separated nucleons. In a nuclear reaction, the difference between the sums of initial and final rest energies supplies the Q value. The sign of that difference and the Coulomb barrier answer different questions: a reaction can release energy overall while still requiring a way to cross an entrance barrier.
Scattering experiments supplied an early structural clue. Rare large deflections of alpha particles by thin matter could be explained by close encounters with a highly concentrated central charge. Ernest Rutherford's 1911 analysis connected such angular measurements to a compact atomic centre, establishing a route from measured scattering cross-sections to internal structure.[ref]

Nuclear pore transport balance 2026-10-18
Nuclear accumulation should compare concentrations, not just total cargo. In an original constructed example, a cell nucleus occupies one volume unit and the accessible cytosol occupies nine. Of tracer units, are nuclear and are cytosolic. With the amounts and the accessible volume, the concentration ratio isOnly of the cargo is nuclear, yet nuclear concentration is four times cytosolic concentration. A majority outside the cell nucleus does not rule out nuclear enrichment.
For comparison, freely exchanging nonbinding cargo at equal concentrations would have : the nuclear fraction would equal the nuclear fraction of accessible volume, . These are constructed amounts, not measurements from the nuclear pore localization experiment. Binding, unequal recovery or cargo degradation would require additional accounting before interpreting an assay.
A minimal two-compartment ordinary differential equation makes the distinction precise. Assume fixed accessible volume, no synthesis or degradation, and effective first-order exchange rates :Total cargo is conserved. Setting the derivative to zero givesFor symmetric passive exchange with conductance , and , so the concentration ratio is one even when the amounts differ. Choosing instead and in reciprocal model-time units gives for . The exact ordinary differential equation solution isSubstitution verifies the solution, and makes departures decay. This effective model can describe an asymmetric exchange balance, but does not by itself identify a nuclear localization sequence, transport receptor or source of energy.
The usefulness of the nuclear pore complex is precisely this combination of separation and exchange: a cell nucleus can maintain a distinctive protein population while receiving new cargo and exporting RNA. The nuclear pore localization experiment asks what feature controls entry; the nuclear pore transport balance asks what an accumulation readout actually means.
Nuclear power plant 2026-11-05
A nuclear power plant converts energy from controlled nuclear fission into electrical energy. A nuclear reactor produces heat; a coolant carries it to the working cycle; a turbine drives an electrical generator. A pressurized water reactor transfers heat to a separate steam circuit, whereas a boiling water reactor generates steam in the reactor vessel.[ref]

If thermal input is and conversion efficiency is , gross electrical output is approximately ; the remaining thermal power must be rejected. The plant also needs its own electrical supply, so gross output differs from net export. After the chain reaction stops, decay heat still requires removal.
Nuclear quadrupole vibration 2026-10-18
A collective oscillation of the quadrupole shape coordinates of an atomic nucleus. Near spherical equilibrium, the ideal harmonic description has five components, corresponding to the five magnetic substates of angular momentum two. Each quantum carries ; it is an excitation of the many-nucleon system rather than an extra constituent. Its frequency is , and its energy spacing follows the quantum harmonic oscillator.
One quantum produces a level at . Two identical quadrupole quanta can couple to in a symmetric state, giving a degenerate multiplet at in the ideal model. Odd total would be antisymmetric under their exchange. Thus the first to first excitation ratio is , rather than the nuclear rotational band value . Real nuclear quadrupole vibrations can be anharmonic and their multiplets split: the ratio is a diagnostic of a limiting model, not a universal classification rule.
Nuclear reaction cross-section Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
The effective area for a specified nuclear reaction channel at given incident energy. Multiplying incident particle flux, target count and this cross section gives an ideal event rate; target losses and detection efficiency require separate corrections.
Nuclear reaction Q-value 2026-10-18
The initial minus final rest energy in a nuclear reaction; positive values represent energy available for outgoing kinetic energy in addition to the incident kinetic energy.
Nuclear reactor Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
A nuclear reactor sustains and controls a nuclear chain reaction to produce heat or a useful neutron field. Nuclear fission supplies fresh neutrons; absorption and neutron leakage remove them. A steady neutron population requires a balance between production and losses, the condition of nuclear criticality.
The functions of its components are different. Fuel supplies fissioning atomic nuclei; control rods change neutron absorption; coolant transports heat. In a thermal reactor, a neutron moderator reduces neutron energies before subsequent reactions. Slowing neutrons and cooling the fuel are separate physical functions even when the same material performs both.
Chicago Pile-1 demonstrated a controlled self-sustaining chain reaction in 1942 using a uranium–graphite assembly and neutron-absorbing controls. The decisive observation was the neutron population's response to changing absorption, rather than generation of useful electrical power.[ref]

A power reactor adds heat-transfer and conversion equipment; decay heat persists after the chain reaction is stopped. Nuclear-recoil kinematics of WIMP scattering Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-10-20
For nonrelativistic elastic scattering of a WIMP of mass from a stationary nucleus of mass , the reduced mass is . In the centre-of-momentum description, a scattering angle gives momentum transfer squared . The target kinetic energy is , giving the displayed maximum at backscattering. In SI units, using masses in kilograms and velocity in metres per second gives joules. Low recoil energy and a falling recoil spectrum make threshold and response calibration important for dark-matter direct detection.
Nuclear-recoil quenching factor 2026-10-20
The relative light or charge yield of a nuclear recoil compared with an electron recoil at the same deposited energy in a specified material and field configuration. It connects an electron-equivalent calibration scale with a recoil-energy scale. It can depend on energy and measurement conditions; assuming a constant or extrapolating below calibration changes light-WIMP interpretations. It does not mean energy conservation fails: energy can enter channels not measured by that readout.
Nuclear resonance 2026-11-05
A nuclear resonance is an enhanced nuclear reaction or scattering response near the energy of an accessible quasi-bound nuclear state. For an isolated resonance, a common energy dependence is , where is the resonance energy, the total width and partial widths for entrance and exit channels.
The lifetime scale is : narrower states persist longer. Spin factors, wavelength factors and interference with background amplitudes complete a cross-section model. Resonance spacings and widths provide input to statistical nuclear-reaction calculations.[ref]
