A 2013 RIKEN experiment used a fast calcium beam on beryllium, selected radioactive aluminium and silicon fragments, then struck carbon to produce magnesium isotopes with . Emitted gamma rays supplied excitation energies; comparison across these isotopes supported deformation extending beyond the region toward . This tests the limits of traditional magic numbers, not merely their arithmetic. The inferred shape depends on nuclear-structure interpretation of the energy levels, rather than direct imaging.[ref]

Neutron scattering Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
Neutron scattering measures how a specimen changes the directions and kinetic energies of incident neutrons. Neutron diffraction uses the elastic scattering pattern to investigate crystal structure and magnetic order; inelastic neutron scattering uses energy transfer to investigate excitations such as phonons and magnons. The two measurements ask complementary questions: what arrangement repeats in space, and what disturbances can propagate through it?
The 1994 Nobel Prize in Physics recognized Clifford Glenwood Shull's diffraction work and Bertram Neville Brockhouse's spectroscopy.[ref]
Nuclear scattering couples to atomic nuclei; magnetic scattering couples the neutron's magnetic moment to electronic magnetic moments. The latter underlies both magnetic neutron diffraction and magnon spectroscopy. An atomic number is not a nuclear neutron scattering weight: the relevant coefficient in the elementary coherent model is the nuclear neutron scattering length.
Neutron scattering kinematics 2026-10-18
Treat the incident and outgoing neutrons as free nonrelativistic particles outside the specimen. Their wave vectors, de Broglie wavelengths, momenta and kinetic energies obeyHere , , is the neutron mass, and uses the Planck constant. Subtracting the outgoing projectile quantities from the incoming ones gives the momentum transfer and energy delivered to the specimen:Thus has units of inverse length, rather than momentum. A positive means the specimen gains energy; negative means it supplies energy to the neutron. If the angle between incident and outgoing propagation directions is , the law of cosines givesKnowing the detector angle alone therefore leaves undetermined unless the outgoing energy is known or an elastic scattering assumption is justified.
For a reproducible unit conversion choose , and . The first is a recommended central value; the latter two conversions are exact.[ref]

For an original chosen example, ångströms and ångströms give , and . At , . These values stipulate an allowed projectile geometry; they do not assert that any particular specimen has an excitation there. Neutron separation energy 2026-10-18
Writing positive nuclear binding energy as and nuclear mass as ,The two-neutron nuclear separation energy is . In an independent-particle example, let the last occupied energy level have and the next empty level , for a chosen positive energy unit . With an unchanged core and no residual interactions, removal from the filled level costs , whereas removing the first particle added above it costs : the drop equals the one-particle gap. These are invented model inputs, not measured nuclear values. Nuclear pairing, rearrangement of the nuclear mean field, and correlations complicate that identification in real masses; a finite difference of nuclear binding energies is not automatically a bare one-particle gap.
Neutron spectroscopy Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
Neutron spectroscopy measures neutron energies or the energy changes caused by interactions with a sample. In inelastic scattering, comparing incident and outgoing energy and momentum probes excitations and motion in matter rather than only its static arrangement.
A pulsed or velocity-selected beam, a sample and detectors at known directions form a typical experiment. For a nonrelativistic outgoing neutron traveling known distance from the sample in time , time of flight gives . A known incident energy then determines the sample's energy transfer. Timing resolution, flight-path uncertainty and background limit the result. [ref]

Nevill Mott Created 2026-10-24 Updated 2026-11-05
Nevill Mott investigated electronic conduction in disordered solids, including glasses and amorphous semiconductors. When states are localized, a carrier can move by thermally assisted hopping rather than ordinary propagation through an extended band. The useful hopping distance balances weak overlap at long range against the availability of energetically accessible states. This connects a temperature-dependent conductivity with both the spatial localization and energy distribution of electronic states.[ref]

A Newtonian binary chirp is a leading-order model in which loss of orbital energy to gravitational radiation makes an almost circular binary system shrink and its gravitational-wave frequency rise. Here is a derivation with explicit SI units. Let the constant component masses be in kilograms, , , separation in metres, and orbital angular frequency in radians per second. Newtonian gravity, circular motion and the quadrupole formula giveThe factor rather than appears because the dominant mass quadrupole moment repeats twice per orbit. Since , radiative energy loss implies , henceThe quantity is a time in seconds. Thus has units and has units , as required for frequency change per second. This model assumes weak gravity, slow relative motion, negligible eccentricity of a conic, no spin corrections and adiabatic evolution over an orbit. It does not describe merger or ringdown.
Separating variables gives a finite formal coalescence time and accumulated wave phase :Indeed ; the formal divergence at signals extrapolation outside the approximation. Over a finite frequency interval, the number of gravitational wave cycles is . This accumulated phase is why a chirp mass can be constrained even when distance and inclination remain entangled.
Nima Arkani-Hamed Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
Nima Arkani-Hamed coauthored a proposal in which large extra dimensions account for the separation between the observed Planck mass and the electroweak scale. The model assigns different propagation spaces to gravity and the low-energy Standard Model fields. Its importance as a physical proposal lies in the resulting tests: altered short-distance gravity and processes in which energy escapes into the additional directions. Those predictions depend on the assumed geometry and localization mechanism.[ref]

Nitrate reductase catalyses the reduction of nitrate to nitrite using an electron donor. In assimilation, further reduction by a suitable nitrite reductase supplies nitrogen for biosynthesis; respiratory systems can instead use nitrate in energy metabolism. Reaction identity alone does not establish which physiological pathway is operating. Different nitrate reductases differ in electron donor and cellular organization. [ref]
Nitrogen assimilation Created 2026-10-31 Updated 2026-11-05
Nitrogen assimilation incorporates inorganic or organic nitrogen into the compounds of a biological cell. In plants, absorbed nitrate must be reduced before its nitrogen can enter amino acids, whereas ammonium can enter the assimilation pathway more directly. These reactions require energy and carbon-containing precursors, linking nutrient acquisition to photosynthesis and metabolism.
Assimilation differs from nitrogen fixation, which converts atmospheric nitrogen into biologically accessible reduced forms. A plant may assimilate nitrogen supplied by a symbiotic partner without itself catalysing nitrogen fixation.

The measured squared radii were fitted against molecular excitation energies, referenced to the parent ground state:The intercept at zero radius gave the excited-product threshold; the fitted slope absorbed the detector scale. A wavemeter monitored the excitation source; scanning the probe covered the recoil Doppler shift. Subtracting the atomic excitation energies converted the intercept to ground-product .[ref]

An apertured grounded plate and detector timing rejected faster competing channels. Selecting fragment electronic states distinguished nearby thresholds. Agreement of across isotopes after zero-point energy correction tested consistency. The method still requires correctly assigned levels, adequate near-threshold signal and stable imaging; a signal drop alone can reflect another channel or a barrier.[ref]

This measurement determines a state-resolved ground-state dissociation energy. Obtaining a finite-temperature bond-dissociation enthalpy requires the thermal increments above; obtaining a bond potential-well depth requires the zero-point energy correction. The three quantities describe different starting conditions for the same specified separation.

Noise-equivalent power Created 2026-10-25 Updated 2026-11-05
Noise-equivalent power expresses detector noise as an equivalent incident radiant power. Non-Fermi liquid Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
A non-Fermi liquid is an interacting fermionic state whose low-energy behavior is not described by the long-lived quasiparticles of a Fermi liquid. In the conventional Fermi liquid picture, excitations close enough to the Fermi surface become sharp compared with their excitation energy. If that organizing principle fails, extending the same quasiparticle approximation toward zero energy can give the wrong response.
The term describes a failure of one framework, rather than one unique replacement theory. A one-dimensional Luttinger liquid provides a controlled example: its long-wavelength excitations are collective density modes, and its correlation functions need not have the free-fermion form. An anomalous finite-temperature transport curve alone does not establish a particular zero-temperature non-Fermi liquid. Spectral and thermodynamic measurements must be interpreted alongside the relevant dimensionality, interactions and accessible energy range.
Noninteracting Coulomb-shell filling 2026-10-20
In a fixed attractive Coulomb potential, neglecting electron-electron interactions leaves hydrogenic one-particle levels with spin-inclusive degeneracy . The Pauli exclusion principle fills these levels in increasing energy. A partially filled degenerate shell gives many states at the same total energy; the first higher energy requires promotion to a different principal shell. This model does not describe the screening and configuration-dependent energies of a real many-electron atom.
