Antilepton Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
An antilepton is the antiparticle of a lepton, with opposite additive quantum numbers. A Positron is the charged antilepton corresponding to an electron.
BABAR time-dependent CP violation experiment Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
BABAR used asymmetric electron-Positron collisions near the Upsilon meson resonance to prepare neutral B meson pairs. It reconstructed one decay into charmonium plus a kaon, and used flavour tagging on the other B meson with charged leptons or kaons. Silicon tracking reconstructed decay vertices for the decay-time difference. Self-tagging decays calibrated mistags and time resolution; charged decays provided a control. The tagged time distributions established CP violation, limited by backgrounds, mistags and vertex alignment.[ref]
The Lorentz boost converts vertex separation to at leading order. Unequal beam energies thus make a time difference measurable as a distance.[ref]
Baryon-minus-lepton number 2026-10-20
The difference between baryon number and lepton number. Standard electroweak sphalerons violate while conserving . Consequently an early baryon asymmetry with zero need not survive equilibration; a surviving nonzero can be redistributed between baryons and leptons. Additional lepton-number-violating interactions can change this conclusion.
Charged-current neutrino-electron threshold 2026-10-20
For a massless incident neutrino and a stationary target electron, the invariant squared center-of-mass energy is in natural units. Production of a charged lepton of mass and a massless neutrino requires , giving the displayed threshold. For the electron flavour the threshold is zero; for heavier charged leptons it is enhanced by the small stationary-target mass.

Charged-lepton Yukawa matrix diagonalization Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-25
A singular value decomposition of the charged-lepton Yukawa matrix uses independent unitary rotations of left- and right-handed leptons. Their gauge-covariant kinetic terms are unchanged because each rotation mixes identical Standard Model representations. After electroweak symmetry breaking, the nonnegative singular values give Dirac masses and diagonal Higgs boson couplings . When the neutrinos are massless, rotating their left-handed fields with the charged partners preserves the diagonal weak charged current.
Chargino 2026-10-20
A charged fermionic mass eigenstate formed by mixing charged electroweak gauginos and higgsinos in a supersymmetric model. Its production and decay can yield leptons and missing transverse momentum when a stable neutral lightest state is present.
Collider effective mass 2026-10-20
A scalar sum of missing transverse momentum magnitude and selected high-energy transverse momenta, used as a hard-event-scale diagnostic in some supersymmetry searches. Which jets and leptons enter must be defined. It is not an invariant mass or the solid-state effective mass, and no universal equality with a produced particle mass holds.
Color charge 2026-10-05
Color charge is the gauge group charge of Quantum chromodynamics, associated with its symmetry. A quark transforms in the fundamental three-dimensional representation, an antiquark in its conjugate, and a lepton is a singlet. The word color is a label for this charge, unrelated to visible light.

Sheldon Lee Glashow's 1979 lecture, Towards a Unified Theory: Threads in a Tapestry, recalls his 1961 construction: a photon, a massive neutral intermediary and a mixing angle. It also stresses its unresolved mass problem: symmetry-breaking masses had been inserted, rather than generated by the Higgs mechanism. Establishing the gauge structure and explaining the gauge boson masses were complementary steps.[ref]

Steven Weinberg's A Model of Leptons (1967) builds a spontaneously broken gauge theory for the electron-type leptons, using a scalar doublet to give masses while retaining a massless photon. It derives neutral and charged couplings and discusses neutrino-electron scattering. Its closing question about renormalizability is explicitly unresolved; the paper is neither a proof of that property nor a complete treatment of quarks.[ref]

Abdus Salam's 1979 lecture, Gauge Unification of Fundamental Forces, describes his and Steven Weinberg's completion of the spontaneously broken formulation for leptons. He separates that construction from the subsequent establishment of renormalizability. Its role is to connect the mass mechanism with predictive neutral and charged couplings, not to identify a photographed event. The Gargamelle evidence subsequently tested the predicted neutral current.[ref]

Fermi function 2026-10-20
The electron-nucleus Coulomb-distortion factor multiplying an otherwise plane-wave beta decay spectrum. It depends on daughter charge, lepton charge and lepton energy. Its energy dependence means that a pure fifth-power phase-space rule is not generally exact.
Fermion generation 2026-10-06
A generation groups corresponding quarks and leptons with the same gauge quantum numbers as their counterparts in other generations. The Standard Model has three such families. Yukawa matrices assign their different masses, and the mismatch of up-type and down-type mass bases produces the CKM matrix.
From renormalizability to electroweak predictions Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
The 1999 recognition of Gerard 't Hooft and Martinus J. G. Veltman concerned the theoretical quantum structure of the electroweak interaction.[ref] Renormalizability makes repeated radiative corrections predictive from a fixed set of inputs. It does not imply that the perturbation series converges, nor that renormalization alone chooses the correct particle content or excludes all physics beyond the Standard Model.
The Gargamelle collaboration prepared an experimental test by exposing its heavy-liquid bubble chamber to neutrino and antineutrino beams at CERN. The readout selected events producing hadrons without an identified muon or electron, compared with events containing a charged lepton. Its 1974 report assessed alternative origins from neutrons and long-lived neutral kaons, finding them insufficient to explain the sample. That supported neutral currents; it did not isolate a radiative correction or demonstrate renormalizability.[ref]
The distinction matters when using the tree-level electroweak gauge-boson masses:Beyond tree level, self-energies, interaction vertices and counterterms alter how chosen input observables predict another observable. The Weinberg angle then needs a specified renormalization scheme; inserting its value from one convention into a formula from another can create an apparent discrepancy. A meaningful higher-order test must state both its independent experimental inputs and the calculated loop order.
Gauge singlet Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-20
A field is a gauge singlet if it transforms in the trivial representation of the entire gauge group: every gauge transformation leaves it unchanged. A singlet of only one factor need not be a gauge singlet of the product group. For example a right-handed neutrino with representation is a Standard Model gauge singlet, whereas a color-singlet charged lepton is still acted on by the electroweak group. A singlet can have ordinary derivatives in its kinetic term and gauge-invariant masses, subject to Lorentz invariance and any additional global symmetries.
Inclusive supersymmetry search 2026-10-20
A broad search over event classes such as jets, leptons and missing transverse momentum, with bins chosen to cover several production or decay possibilities. It still has acceptance and model assumptions; inclusive does not mean sensitive to every supersymmetric spectrum.
Leptogenesis 2026-10-20
A mechanism in which an initial lepton asymmetry is generated and then partly converted into a baryon asymmetry, commonly through electroweak anomalous processes. Heavy Majorana neutrino decays offer one possible realization; a seesaw mechanism by itself does not guarantee the required asymmetry.

Massless leptonic W decay width 2026-10-14
The chiral weak charged current vertex gives the spin-averaged squared matrix element for an on-shell W boson decaying to a massless charged lepton and antineutrino. Integrating two-body Lorentz-invariant phase space gives . The massive-vector spin average divides by three; an extra neutrino-helicity factor would incorrectly double count the chiral projector.
Massless leptonic Z decay width Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-18
For a vertex into one massless color-singlet particle-antiparticle pair, the massive-vector spin average and two-body Lorentz-invariant phase space give . With Standard Model neutral-current vector and axial couplings, one neutrino flavor has and one charged-lepton flavor has . Chiral projectors already remove inactive neutrino helicities. These are tree-level massless results.
Muon Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-14
The muon is the negatively charged second-generation lepton, with electric charge and lepton number . Its antiparticle is the antimuon.
