Spectrum of the round sphere 2026-10-14
For the positive Laplace-Beltrami operator on the unit sphere , with , the eigenvalues are for integers . Their eigenspaces consist of restrictions of degree- harmonic polynomials and have dimensions , with the second term zero for . The Laplacian in polar coordinates gives the eigenvalue; Fischer decomposition and the Stone-Weierstrass theorem prove completeness.
Spin one-half Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
In units , spin one-half is the two-dimensional irreducible spin angular momentum representation with components . The Pauli matrices give eigenvalues along every unit axis. The normalized -axis states are .
Spin uncertainty state dependence 2026-10-14
For a qubit, use the dimensionless Pauli matrices as observables , . Their Pauli matrix multiplication law givesThese observables have eigenvalues ; the physical spin components are , where is the reduced Planck constant, so their standard deviations acquire a factor .
In the computational basis, prepare , an eigenstate of with eigenvalue . Direct multiplication givesBoth Pauli measurements return and with equal probabilities, and the Robertson uncertainty principle is saturated: .
Instead prepare . Now the expectation values are , , so , . The Pauli measurement of is certain, and both sides of the bound vanish. The commutator is still nonzero as an operator: noncommuting observables do not guarantee a positive lower bound independent of the quantum state. This example is useful for distinguishing the algebra of the observables from the expectation values in a particular preparation.
Pauli standard deviations, their product, and the Robertson bound in two preparations: the same noncommuting observables give bounds of one and zero
. Details. A field is a splitting field for a finite group if every simple module over its group algebra is absolutely simple: it remains simple over every extension field. Equivalently, the quotient by the Jacobson radical is a product of full matrix algebras over . In characteristic , containing all th roots of unity, where and , is sufficient. This is the modular splitting-field theorem; it is substantially stronger than merely having eigenvalues for one chosen group element.
The model matrix has a defective double eigenvalue when . Its characteristic polynomial is , giving the displayed roots. For fixed nonzero the small root is and the other is . These expansions cease to be ordered at , the distinguished limit in which both roots split on a square-root scale. This is the generic leading behavior when a perturbation closes a two-dimensional Jordan block through a nonzero lower-left entry; it need not occur for a perturbation that leaves that entry zero.
Independent sign changes and interchange of two coordinates in the natural dihedral group action force the displayed cubic normal form. Apart from the origin, its nondegenerate small equilibria lie on coordinate axes or on the diagonals. An axial branch has squared amplitude and eigenvalues . A diagonal branch has component squared amplitude and eigenvalues . Subtracting the two nonzero equilibrium equations gives , excluding other cubic branches when .
For a real or complex two-by-two matrix , the Cayley-Hamilton theorem reads . Hence exactly when . Conversely, if for any positive integer , every eigenvalue is zero and the same identity gives . Thus a nonzero nilpotent matrix of this size has nilpotency index two.
Choose and a fixed -regular graph on vertices with absolute nonconstant eigenvalues at most . Start with the loop-inclusive complete graph on vertices and iterate . The degree stays , vertex counts are , and . Since , all . The spectral cut bound gives multiplicity-counted edge expansion at least . Removing loops and merging parallel edges loses at most a factor , producing simple expander graphs with maximum degree and edge expansion at least .
In take and . Then and , but has determinant and a negative eigenvalue. In contrast, for commuting positive elements is positive in the commutative function algebra supplied by continuous functional calculus. The obstruction is noncommutativity, not a failure of the scalar inequality.
Squire transformation 2026-10-14
For positive streamwise wavenumber , replace a three-dimensional Orr-Sommerfeld equation by a two-dimensional one with the displayed parameters. Both the transverse operator and the coefficient remain unchanged, preserving the eigenfunction and phase-speed eigenvalue. This proves the modal comparison in Squire's theorem.
Stability matrix 2026-10-14
For near an equilibrium point, the stability matrix is the Jacobian matrix of the vector field evaluated at that point. Perturbations obey to first order. Its eigenvalues determine linear growth and decay: strictly negative real parts imply local asymptotic stability, while a positive real part gives instability. Zero real parts require further analysis. The stability matrix of a renormalization-group fixed point applies this construction to beta-function flows.
Stabilizer code Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
A stabilizer code is the common eigenspace of a stabilizer group , an abelian subgroup of the Pauli group excluding . Choose independent stabilizer generators on physical qubits. They are commuting Hermitian operators, each squaring to . The stabilizer subspace and its orthogonal projector areThe stabilizer-projector formula gives , so logical qubits remain. Independent here means that no nonempty product of the chosen stabilizer generators is . Excluding is necessary: a vector cannot simultaneously be fixed by and unless it is zero.
For the three-qubit bit-flip repetition code, take and , with the Pauli Z gate on site and identities elsewhere. The stabilizer group is . Both stabilizer generators have eigenvalue exactly on the span of and , giving dimensions for one logical qubit. A projective measurement of these checks distinguishes four orthogonal two-dimensional sectors rather than eight individual computational basis states.
A Pauli error that anticommutes with a stabilizer generator changes that check's sign, producing an error syndrome. A Pauli operator commuting with every check can still act on the logical qubits; the centralizer of a stabilizer group describes these possibilities. Thus the number of checks determines the encoded dimension, while the quantum code distance determines protection against arbitrary local errors. The five-qubit error correcting code, for instance, has four stabilizer generators and quantum code distance three; the three-qubit bit-flip repetition code has two checks but quantum code distance one because a single phase flip is unflagged. .For real and , writing gives a gradient flow with potential . The origin has exponential asymptotic stability for , is algebraically attracting at equality, and is unstable above it. Nonzero stable equilibria are the real pair for , or the imaginary pair for , when their squared amplitudes are positive. Differentiating the two real equations gives eigenvalues on the real branch and on the imaginary branch. For , gives a radially attracting circle with neutral phase, so individual equilibrium points have Lyapunov stability but are not individually asymptotically attracting.
Stationary bifurcation Created 2026-10-03 Updated 2026-10-06
At a stationary bifurcation, a real eigenvalue of the linearized system passes through zero. Nearby equilibria may then be created, destroyed, or exchange stability.
For a real symmetric matrix and nonzero real vector , the quotient rule and the quadratic form gradient give the displayed gradient. It vanishes exactly when , so the stationary points are eigenvectors. Equivalently, the Lagrange multiplier condition for optimizing on the unit sphere is . The smallest and largest eigenvalues give the global extrema; other eigenvectors can be stationary without being extrema, as a direction mixing larger and smaller eigenvalues changes the quotient in opposite ways.
Stationary distribution Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
A stationary distribution is a probability distribution preserved by a Markov chain's evolution. For a Discrete-time Markov chain in the row convention,Thus is a normalized nonnegative left eigenvector of the transition matrix for eigenvalue one. Starting with distributed as makes every have that same probability distribution. For a time-homogeneous Markov chain, the path probabilities are also unchanged by shifting all observation times together: the process has strict stationarity. This does not mean its individual paths are constant. See Hao Wu's MIT lecture 2, stationary distributions.
For the sunny/rainy transition matrix, write . The sunny component of gives , so andMoreover,These equal stationary flows verify detailed balance and show that the Markov chain is reversible. The diagonal detailed balance equations hold automatically. Only of the stationary days are rainy, but of the days following a rainy day are rainy: stationarity permits dependence.
A finite Markov chain that is an irreducible Markov chain has a unique stationary distribution. If it is also an aperiodic Markov chain, for every initial probability distribution. The sunny/rainy example satisfies both conditions: both directions are possible and each state has a positive holding probability of a Markov chain. See Hao Wu's MIT lecture 4, convergence theorem. For an infinite state space, the additional positive recurrence hypothesis in the countable-state Markov chain convergence theorem matters.
Existence of a stationary distribution alone does not give this convergence. Consider the deterministic two-cycleHere , but starting in the first state gives alternating probability distributions . Its period of a state in a Markov chain is two. The running fraction of visits to either state nevertheless tends to , illustrating the Markov chain ergodic theorem. Starting with instead keeps the one-time probability distributions stationary even though every path alternates.
Stern-Gerlach expectation estimation 2026-10-14
A concrete idealized implementation uses a Stern-Gerlach experiment twice: a preparation filter along passes only its plus spin channel, and a analyzer resolves both output channels for many fresh atoms. This prepares the spin one-half along an axis state . The authored apparatus description uses slit collimation, a nonuniform magnetic field with a pointed pole, and counters at the separated outputs.[ref]
Chapter 5: Spin One. The Feynman Lectures on Physics, Volume III, Chapter 5: Spin One, §5–1, figure 5–1 and the paragraph proposing output counters; §5–4, slit diffraction and internal-state limitations
The two-channel spin one-half preparation and analyzer are described separately; the source's recombining “improved” apparatus is explicitly idealized, so the setup here is a proposed estimation model, not a report of observed counts.[ref]Count every accepted analyzer event in its calibrated or channel and compute from the count difference. The magnetic field gradient separates trajectories through their magnetic moments; calibrated channel labels convert positions into spin eigenvalues. The readout is a population imbalance, not an intermediate trajectory carrying spin . Beam position also depends on flight time and field geometry, so averaging raw positions alone does not establish a calibrated spin expectation value.
As controls, feed known and preparations to check the channel assignment and leakage, hold the analyzer axis fixed, and repeat short blocks to check preparation drift. Measure background counts and relative channel efficiencies. With efficiencies and and negligible background, the detected plus fraction isUnequal efficiencies bias the naive sample mean, even for arbitrarily many counts. For example, , , and give detected fraction and naive mean , rather than . Background, overlapping beams, detector saturation, angle misalignment, unwanted internal states, and preparation correlations require a better measurement in quantum mechanics model. Increasing only reduces the independent sampling contribution; it cannot remove these systematic errors. The selected preparation beam is the population being estimated, so losses in preparing it must be distinguished from losses in reading its two outcomes.
