For negligible final fermion masses, the chiral Z-boson partial width is proportional to . Both channels have one color state. An electron has , and , givingFor one active neutrino species, , and there is no coupled right-handed neutrino field, so , . The common coupling normalization and phase space cancel in the ratio:The same total decay width appears in the two branching fractions, soThere is no factor of three for a single specified flavour. Summing three active neutrino flavours would give an invisible branching fraction of approximately in this approximation.
Use a high-energy proton beam on a target to produce secondary pions, then select and focus the negative ones. A magnetic horn and a charge-selecting dipole system remove positive pions, limiting wrong-sign contamination. Select a narrow range of magnetic rigidity; if additional species rejection is available, velocity or mass discrimination reduces negative kaon contamination at the same momentum.
The selected travel through an evacuated decay tunnel and undergo . Their forward Lorentz boost concentrates the antineutrinos within an angle of order . Choose a tunnel long enough for substantial pion decay but short compared with the boosted muon decay length. Since is much longer than , this reduces secondary contamination.
Downstream magnets sweep the remaining charged particles into absorbers, and shielding stops residual hadrons and muons. The antineutrino beam continues straight through. Parent-particle collimation, charge selection, and a forward detector improve purity; neutral-kaon decays, remaining wrong-sign parents, and muon decays prevent perfect purity. Neutrinos themselves cannot be focused or charge-selected by these magnets. Neutrinos produced after stopped-muon decay or capture are much less forward and can be reduced by directional and energy selection.
The charged pion has spin zero. In its rest frame, the outgoing muon or Positron and the neutrino travel in opposite directions. With a nearly massless left-helicity neutrino, total angular momentum zero requires the positive charged antilepton to have negative helicity. The weak charged current instead creates a massless positive antilepton with positive helicity. A nonzero charged-lepton mass supplies the required opposite-helicity component.
Thus the decay amplitude is proportional to : this is helicity suppression. Explicitly, contracting the pion's axial-current matrix element, proportional to its four-momentum , with the leptonic current and applying the Dirac equation leaves a factor . The leptonic pseudoscalar decay width is, in the convention,The phase space advantage of the lighter Positron cannot offset its much stronger helicity suppression. The common factors cancel in the pion electron-to-muon decay ratio:This tree-level estimate explains why the muonic branch dominates by roughly four orders of magnitude. The paper's table gives an electronic branching fraction ; electromagnetic corrections change the simple ratio by a few percent without changing the mechanism.
For (i), CP symmetry relates the negative- and positive-pion radiative channels to excellent accuracy. The original positive-pion table therefore predictsThe comparison requires the same photon-energy and event-selection definition. The table attaches an unexplained footnote to this radiative channel; it does not specify those cuts in the supplied excerpt. An arbitrarily soft photon is not a separately infrared-finite exclusive observable, so the numerical value must retain the table's definition.
Part (ii) contains an apparent notation error in the original PDF as well as the TeX: it prints , rather than . Taken literally, the charged leptons carry net electron-family lepton number , and the printed adds another . The initial pion has zero lepton number. This is a channel, not the charge conjugate of the listed positive-pion decay. In the ordinary lepton-number-conserving Standard Model approximation,Allowing lepton-number-violating masses for Majorana neutrinos would require additional physical assumptions and does not justify assigning the tabulated number to that channel.
For the likely intended charge-conjugate process, the prediction is insteadThis distinction follows from a lepton-number test of a decay channel; replacing the printed neutrino by an antineutrino must be stated explicitly.

The table gives the Xi baryon mean lifetime . At , an initially resting particle has survival probabilityThus the most probable contents are one undecayed . The initial momentum is unspecified. For a moving parent, time dilation replaces the denominator by , making the survival probability at least as large. The times below are characteristic proper mean lifetimes; laboratory times depend on the particle velocities.
The principal first step isIt typically occurs on the scale. The neutral pion almost immediately converts to two photons, with and . The Lambda baryon has and two dominant routes.
In the charged-pion route,The muon lifetime is a standard additional input, not present in the supplied five table pages.[ref]

The successive contents are approximately , then , then . After a few muon lifetimes the dominant stable endpoint isThe leading-path probability including the tabulated two-photon pion branch isHere the last factor is the tabulated dominant muonic charged-pion fraction; rare radiative corrections are being neglected in describing a fixed photon count. Before selecting pion decay channels, the probability of reaching the history is .In the neutral-pion route,This produces by roughly the nanosecond scale. It is a long-lived intermediate state, not the final endpoint: the free neutron has in the original table and eventually undergoes beta-minus decay,Thus after several thousand seconds the dominant stable endpoint isBefore selecting the two decays, the history has probability . The familiar rough description is therefore a charged-pion route and a neutron route; including the specified leading pion branches gives approximately and for the two displayed endpoints. The remainder includes Dalitz decays and other rare channels, not a failure of probability conservation.
These are particle decay cascades, treating the separated final proton, electron, photons and neutrinos as stable asymptotic particles and neglecting subsequent collisions and rare extra radiation. An infinitely large box prevents escaping particles from being removed from the inventory. Neutrino labels specify their production flavours. Each lifetime describes a stochastic waiting time, so there is no finite sharp instant at which every unstable particle has certainly decayed.
annihilation can produce gamma rays, charged antiparticles and neutrinos, directly or through decay and hadronization of the primary products. For self-conjugate dark matter of mass , the annihilation rate per unit volume is . For a photon yield , the optically thin flux from a chosen solid angle isUse consistent mass-energy units. The factor assumes identical self-conjugate particles; distinct particle-antiparticle populations require their separate number densities. A gamma-ray continuum with an endpoint near the particle mass is generic for many channels, whereas a narrow line from or would be especially distinctive but often loop suppressed. dwarf spheroidal galaxies offer high dark-matter content with limited conventional emission; the Galactic centre has a potentially larger signal and much more complicated foregrounds.
Charged Positrons and antiprotons are redistributed by magnetic fields and lose energy, so their radiation spectrum depend on propagation and cannot usually point directly to the source. annihilation electrons can also produce synchrotron and inverse-Compton radiation. dark matter captured in the Sun could produce escaping high-energy neutrinos, with the signal depending on capture, annihilation equilibrium and particle interactions. Early annihilation energy injection can alter recombination and cosmic microwave background anisotropies.
A persuasive interpretation joins particle-like spectral structure with a consistent density-dependent morphology and other channels. Pulsars, cosmic-ray interactions and unresolved sources can imitate continuum excesses. Density-profile uncertainties, substructure and velocity-dependent annihilation modify the predicted signal; a lack of a detectable line does not exclude all annihilating dark matter.
A Majorana neutrino is its own antiparticle, with a mass term that can violate lepton number by two units. It is not thereby a state of both readily observable helicities with equal weak rates: charged-current vertices still select chirality. In light-neutrino exchange, the needed helicity connection between two beta vertices supplies a neutrino-mass factor.
Ordinary two-neutrino double beta decay is and conserves lepton number. It can occur when the direct single-beta route is energetically forbidden or highly suppressed but the double change is allowed. neutrinoless double beta decay, , violates lepton number by two. For the conventional light-Majorana exchange in neutrinoless double beta decay mechanism,Here is the lepton mixing matrix, the phase-space factor in this convention and a nuclear matrix element. Complex phases can cancel contributions to the effective Majorana mass; oscillation mass differences alone do not fix it. Other lepton-number-violating mechanisms can also cause the process, so a rate is not a model-independent measurement of .
The experimental signature is a peak in the summed electron energy at the nuclear Q-value, apart from small recoil and energy losses. Two-neutrino decay instead gives a continuous sum-energy radiation spectrum because neutrinos carry away variable energy. Isotope enrichment, large exposure, good energy resolution and radiopure shielding improve sensitivity; gamma backgrounds, radon, surface events and the two-neutrino tail require calibration and sideband controls. Coincidence or track information can test whether the topology is compatible with two electrons. A later concrete example is GERDA's 2013 germanium-76 source-detector search, which used pulse-shape discrimination and background controls rather than identifying any isolated energy deposit as a decay.[ref]

Observation would establish lepton-number violation and support a Majorana mass component; a null search constrains mechanisms and does not prove neutrinos are Dirac particles.
supersymmetry pairs bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom; broken supersymmetry permits partners heavier than known particles. At the Large Hadron Collider, strong production of squarks and gluinos is an important channel. If R-parity is conserved, partners are produced in pairs and their cascades end in a stable lightest supersymmetric particle. A neutral weakly interacting lightest supersymmetric particle escapes, giving missing transverse momentum together with jets and possibly leptons. Conservation is tested transversely because the initial parton longitudinal momenta are unknown.
The experimental observable isneutrinos produce genuine missing transverse momentum, and calorimeter mismeasurement or detector defects can imitate it. Searches use jet multiplicity, transverse momenta, missing momentum, angular separation cuts and a collider effective mass such as . Isolated-lepton selections explore complementary cascades. Trigger efficiency, jet energy scale, collision pileup and event cleaning affect acceptance.
A credible search estimates backgrounds from particle-physics control regions before inspecting the signal region. Invisible plus jets can be constrained using photon-plus-jets or visible samples with control-region transfer factors. Lepton-enriched samples constrain and top backgrounds with lost leptons; multijet samples constrain fake missing momentum. A joint likelihood includes these observations and nuisance parameters for systematic uncertainties. Agreement with background gives upper bounds on signal rate and conditional mass exclusions. The pre-examination ATLAS 7 TeV analysis is a concrete example of this strategy and reported no significant excess.[ref]
Search for squarks and gluinos with the ATLAS detector in final states with jets and missing transverse momentum using 4.7 fb^-1 of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV proton-proton collision data by ATLAS Collaboration. Sections III, IX and XI, control-region likelihood and background estimates; abstract for the null result
Electroweak production motivates multilepton searches; compressed spectra can give soft visible decay products and require special selections such as recoil against initial-state radiation. R-parity violation can instead remove the stable missing-particle signature, requiring other searches. An exclusion always depends on masses, branching fractions, production rates and decay assumptions; a null jets-plus-missing-momentum result does not exclude supersymmetry as a whole.
Standard Model active neutrinos decouple while relativistic and retain a thermal momentum distribution. They therefore constitute hot dark matter for the light masses compatible with the standard cosmological picture. Their collisionless free streaming erases linear cosmological density perturbations below a characteristic scale. Making them the dominant gravitating matter would delay small-scale structure formation and suppress the observed matter power spectrum.
For standard thermal abundances and nonrelativistic neutrinos today,Increasing the mass sum enough to provide all the stipulated dark matter conflicts with the successful cold dark matter description of cosmological structure. Independently, the Tremaine-Gunn bound on the fermionic phase-space occupation limits the density light neutrinos can supply in small galactic haloes.[ref]
Dynamical Role of Light Neutral Leptons in Cosmology by Scott Tremaine and James Edward Gunn. Pages 407–410, collisionless phase-space bound
Oscillations establish nonzero neutrino mass differences, but do not make the relic neutrinos cold. Active neutrinos can contribute some matter; they cannot supply the dominant cold component. A heavier sterile neutrino candidate would be a different hypothesis, not an ordinary Standard Model relic. Past exam of the particle Astrophysics course of the University of Cambridge 2016 Paper 1 1 Solution 2026-10-20
The known active neutrinos are too light and too fast to supply the dominant cold dark matter. Their relativistic decoupling leaves substantial free streaming, which erases rather than seeds sufficiently small-scale structure; their allowed mass density is also inadequate for the dominant cold component. Changing a light active neutrino from Dirac to Majorana does not remove those problems. What can change the picture is an enlarged neutral-fermion sector containing sterile states with different masses, production and decay rates. A sufficiently long-lived sterile neutrino in a Majorana state can be a dark-matter candidate; Majorana character alone supplies neither stability nor the correct abundance.
For the spinor calculation, put and define , . Applying the given chiral projectors givesConsequentlywhere the last equality uses . Same-chirality Lorentz scalar products instead vanish: for example . The nonzero overlaps demonstrate the Lorentz scalar structures coupling left and right chirality. For to this is a particle-number-preserving Dirac coupling; for to the charge-conjugate sector it can describe a lepton-number-violating Majorana coupling.
There is a normalization subtlety: both displayed overlaps equal the on-shell mass parameter used to define the spinors. A chiral scalar spinor overlap verifies a coupling structure without fixing an independent Lagrangian coefficient . Repeating the on-shell construction with mass parameter would instead give the corresponding overlap ; this is a different input, rather than a newly derived parameter. The independent coefficients of a Dirac mass term and a Majorana mass term are defined byThe Majorana terms connect a field with its charge conjugate and violate the corresponding continuous lepton phase symmetry by two units. With only unbroken Standard Model gauge symmetry, a left-handed Majorana mass also requires electroweak symmetry breaking or an appropriate higher-dimensional operator; it is not an arbitrary gauge-invariant bare mass for a lepton doublet.
Use an all-left-handed Weyl basis . For real parameters the one-family Dirac-Majorana mass matrix isWriting gives an orthogonal diagonalization, with up to the rotation-sign convention. Massive-particle chirality and helicity are not identical; the familiar left/right helicity language becomes an approximation in the relativistic regime.
The characteristic polynomial isIts roots areFor Majorana fermions the nonnegative physical masses, as explained by physical Majorana mass and signed eigenvalue, are after a possible field rephasing; a negative real eigenvalue is not a negative physical rest mass. When ,The light state is predominantly , while the heavy state is predominantly . Each mass eigenstate combines its Weyl component and charge conjugate to form a Majorana field.
For , the heavy mass is approximately . In the type-I limit ,The seesaw light-mass estimate needs a Dirac scale: no unique numerical light mass follows because the Dirac mass and were not supplied. As an explicitly conditional illustration, choosing and gives ; this is an assumed Dirac scale, not additional exam data or a prediction from alone. A heavy seesaw state is also not automatically stable enough to be dark matter.
The conventional minimal Pati-Salam model gauge group isThe group printed in this paper is different: it contains two factors and only one . This is a discrepancy in the original PDF, not just in the transcription. The standard-model discussion below uses the conventional intended Pati-Salam model model. A literal theory with the printed product would require additional fermion representations and symmetry-breaking data that are not specified.
The Pati-Salam model unifies the three quark color charges with lepton number as a fourth color charge. A family forms left-handed and right-handed multiplets, including a right-handed neutrino. The extended color charge group contains quark-lepton gauge bosons, while the right-handed weak factor supplies right-handed charged currents after symmetry breaking. The Pati-Salam charge embedding isThe original paper explicitly develops the smaller local subgroup , as well as a larger underlying global structure; neither distinction licenses silently replacing the printed group.[ref]
Lepton number as the fourth color by Jogesh Pati and Abdus Salam. §II.B, equation (2), printed p. 276; §II.C, charge assignments
The product group is a quark-lepton unification scheme rather than a simple gauge group with one automatically common coupling. Breaking the right-handed and symmetries can generate a large and light/heavy Majorana neutrinos through the seesaw. The gauge group alone does not uniquely fix their masses or guarantee a dark-matter lifetime. The most important laboratory test of Majorana character is neutrinoless double beta decay, with no outgoing neutrinos. Under light-neutrino exchange, the amplitude involvesThe coherent squared mixing elements allow phase cancellations. A null result constrains this combination within the assumed mechanism, rather than proving that all neutrinos are Dirac.
The observable is a peak in summed electron energy at the decay Q value, unlike the continuous two-neutrino spectrum. Enriched source material, large exposure, good energy resolution, underground operation and radiopure construction suppress backgrounds. germanium arrays use the source as a semiconductor detector; xenon time-projection chambers combine ionization, light and event-position information; bolometers measure deposited energy through a temperature rise. The GERDA collaboration's Phase-I study is a concrete example of an enriched-germanium source-detector search with background suppression.[ref]

energy calibration, resolution tails, radon and material backgrounds, cosmic-ray vetoes, signal-like event topology and sideband fits all need independent checks before a Q-value excess is convincing. Collider same-sign dilepton processes can test heavier Majorana states, but require a specified production and decay mechanism. Lepton-number violation, absolute-mass measurements and oscillation data provide complementary information; oscillations alone do not settle Majorana character. At energies large compared with fermion masses, the gauge interactions preserve chirality on each fermion line. A photon couples to charged fermions with equal left and right coefficients . A gluon couples to either quark chirality with coefficient . A Z boson couples to both, with coefficients on left-chiral fields and on right-chiral fields. A W boson couples only to left-chiral fermions and the associated right-helicity antifermions: or , and the charge-conjugate channels. For quarks the coefficient includes the CKM matrix. There is no Standard Model right-chiral neutrino gauge vertex.
For outgoing pairs at a neutral vertex, the allowed helicities are and ; the latter labels helicity, not the chirality of the corresponding antifield. Only the -channel photon and Z boson diagrams contribute to at tree level among these gauge exchanges. A W boson changes charged leptons into neutrinos, and gluons do not couple to leptons.
Assume coherent production and detection, relativistic neutrinos, two active neutrino flavours, propagation in vacuum, negligible packet separation and no absorption. Invert the given real lepton mixing matrix to obtain and , where , . With phases in natural units,Using the paper's opposite sign convention conjugates this probability amplitude and leaves the probability unchanged. For equal momentum, and , so . The equal-energy convention gives the same leading result from the momentum difference; evaluating each component at a different arrival time would incorrectly double the phase.Since ,This gives the stated factor . Neutrino oscillation in this approximation measures , not the absolute neutrino mass or its ordering.

In a dense beam dump, long-lived pions and kaons usually interact and lose energy before decaying. Their residual stopped decays yield low-energy neutrinos, below the useful high-energy tau-interaction sample. Prompt charmed mesons have much shorter lifetimes and can decay before reinteraction. This suppresses the conventional muon neutrino background relative to the prompt component. The production sequence is quantum chromodynamics creation of , principally with also allowed, followed by hadronization and its charge conjugate. The process includes both quark-exchange diagrams and the three-gluon diagram. Fragmentation also produces other hadrons; the proton does not turn directly into one isolated Ds meson. The charge-conjugate chain gives a prompt tau antineutrino and a secondary tau neutrino. Thus each leptonic Ds meson chain produces both tau-flavour signs. The corresponding Feynman diagrams are shown in a.
For the CKM matrix, diagonalizing the up/down quark mass matrices by leaves in the charged current:The three-generation unitary matrix has three physical mixing angles and one CP violation phase after field rephasings. At fixed kinematics and hadronic matrix element, rates are proportional to ; phase space, parent lifetimes, form factors and helicity suppression must also be included when comparing branching fractions.
For a charged pseudoscalar meson , leptonic pseudoscalar decay width givesThe Ds meson channel is Cabibbo-favoured, , whereas the charged D meson channel uses . Taking , and in GeV givesIncluding the approximate lifetime ratio and the given production ratio gives a tau yield ratio about , already much greater than one even with equal decay constants. This is an illustrative estimate using approximate additional mass/lifetime inputs, not a determination from the production cross sections alone. A neutral D meson cannot annihilate to the charged pair by electric charge conservation; its semileptonic tau modes have insufficient phase space once the required strange or nonstrange recoil hadron is included. Light mesons are below threshold; bottom production is much smaller at this fixed-target energy. Consequently neither the larger production rate nor ordinary light-hadron production outweighs the Ds meson tau source. [ref]

At the Z boson pole, the accessible primary fermion pairs are , , , the three channels, and . The top quark is too heavy. The charged channels also have photon exchange, and the electronic channel has a substantial nonresonant Bhabha scattering contribution. On-shell W boson pairs are above threshold; they are not primary decays.
A tau lepton pair gives two approximately back-to-back narrow low-multiplicity cones, usually one or three charged tracks per cone, with overall charge zero and missing energy and momentum from neutrinos. Opposite hemispheres can show electron, muon or hadronic tags. A decay vertex or track impact-parameter information helps establish the short tau lepton flight. Reject Bhabha scattering and dimuon events by their nearly full visible beam energy, particle identification and little missing momentum; reject ordinary quark multijets by their broader high-multiplicity activity and larger visible invariant masses. Control two-photon backgrounds with visible transverse momentum, forward activity and event geometry. Selection efficiencies depend on decay mode and must be calibrated.

Use a high-multiplicity hadronic mode with only one invisible neutrino, and reconstruct the total visible four-momentum . In the tau lepton rest frame,Fit the endpoint of the hadronic invariant mass distribution, preferably together with its laboratory energy boundary at known beam energy. The two-dimensional boundary uses more information than the single largest observed mass. Detector smearing, unseen neutral products, backgrounds, beam radiation and hadronic spectral modeling must be included. Absence of a displaced endpoint generally sets an upper bound rather than a positive neutrino mass measurement. Strictly the flavour state contains several mass eigenstates; an unresolved endpoint constrains the corresponding weighted mass spectrum.
Neglect radiation, take , , and treat a fixed hadronic invariant mass as a single recoil system in . With negligible neutrino mass,Thus , numerically approximately to . In the ultrarelativistic limit the range is . A spread of hadronic invariant masses broadens these endpoints; an average mass alone is not a strict endpoint specification for the whole sample.
Let denote a positive-helicity , and measure from its laboratory flight direction in its rest frame. For a spin-zero hadronic recoil, the left-helicity tau neutrino and angular momentum conservation giveFor example a tau lepton with spin along can emit a left-helicity neutrino along , carrying spin along , with the spin-zero recoil along . A positive-helicity tau lepton then gives a harder visible recoil. If , and , the more general tau hadronic polarimetry formula isFor spin-zero recoil . For a spin-one system produced by the V-A interaction, the longitudinal and transverse weights are , with opposite angular slopes; summing gives . At this is about , so the negative-helicity tau lepton has the higher mean total hadronic energy, about versus , within that spin-one model. [ref]
Tau polarization and correlated decays in neutrino experiments (2023). Polarized tau decay: longitudinal and transverse spin-one recoil distributions, Eqs. (5)–(6)
The supplied mean invariant mass does not specify the recoil's spin composition or its helicity amplitudes. Consequently the last sign cannot be universal: positive helicity is harder for a spin-zero recoil, negative helicity is harder for the specified spin-one recoil, and a mixture requires its measured spectral weights. Polarization of an intermediate vector or axial-vector meson also changes the division of energy among its daughter hadrons; that information is not fixed by the total jet invariant mass alone.
The Goldhaber experiment inferred neutrino helicity from the circular polarization of a nuclear gamma ray. A spin-zero metastable europium-152 nucleus captures an inner-shell electron, producing a spin-one excited samarium-152 daughter and an electron neutrino; the daughter promptly emits a roughly gamma ray to its spin-zero ground state. For a nearly stationary initial atom, the daughter recoils opposite the neutrino. Selecting photons emitted along that recoil relates the daughter spin projection, the photon helicity and the neutrino helicity.
The selection used resonant absorption and scattering in samarium. Nuclear recoil normally shifts an emitted gamma ray below the absorption resonance; the daughter recoil from electron capture supplies a compensating forward Doppler shift. Resonant scattering therefore preferentially selects forward photons, fixing their direction relative to the otherwise invisible neutrino. A samarium scatterer and scintillation counting identify this resonant component. Transmission through magnetized iron, whose Compton scattering depends on the relative electron and photon spins, then analyzes the circular polarization. Reversing the magnetization reverses the analyzing asymmetry and helps control instrumental offsets.
The selected photon and neutrino normalized helicities have the same sign: their momenta are opposite, while the daughter angular-momentum accounting gives opposite spin projections along the recoil axis. The observed negative photon helicity therefore establishes predominantly left-helicity neutrinos, consistent with the V-A interaction. It measures a helicity correlation, not a tiny neutrino mass or a literal observation of the neutral particle's trajectory.[ref]
Helicity of Neutrinos by Maurice Goldhaber and others. 1958, pp. 1015–1017: capture cascade, resonant selection and polarization measurement
The bottom quark has charge and left-handed weak isospin , requiring a charge- partner in a complete Standard Model weak doublet. Completing the third quark generation also maintains the quark/lepton cancellation of gauge anomalies. A three-generation CKM matrix permits an irreducible CP violation phase. Flavour constraints and loop corrections, including their strong top-mass dependence in electroweak precision observables, provided indirect evidence before direct production. These arguments identify the required partner and its interactions; they do not by themselves fix its mass.
The Tevatron collided protons and antiprotons at . Quantum chromodynamics produces , mainly through annihilation there. Each top quark decays predominantly to before hadronization, giving . The dilepton channel has two isolated oppositely charged leptons, missing transverse momentum from neutrinos, and bottom jets. The single-lepton channel has an isolated electron or muon, missing transverse momentum, and four leading jets, two consistent with bottom decay. The all-hadronic channel has more background. Secondary-vertex and soft-lepton tags identify bottom hadrons.
CDF and D0 reported independent excesses in 1995, with event kinematics and reconstructed masses consistent with a common very heavy quark. Fits assign jets to the two decay chains and compare with expected jets, multijet and instrumental backgrounds. Agreement of counts, bottom content and reconstruction across channels is stronger evidence than an excess in one event class alone. [ref]

Measure an absolute rate or differential spectrum, calculate or independently determine the hadronic factor, and solve for the modulus. The process is not a direct count of quark flavours in a detector: form factors, decay constants, nuclear structure and radiation can limit the result.

Rate moduli alone do not determine the complex phase. CP-asymmetric decay distributions and interference in neutral-meson systems, or tree-level interference, constrain the phase and the CKM unitarity triangle. Unitarity supplies consistency checks and indirect determinations, but a fit that imposes it must be distinguished from a direct measurement of an element.
A general-purpose collider detector surrounds the interaction region with complementary layers. The layout makes the measured signals useful together: tracks establish charged trajectories, calorimeters sum deposited energy, and outer detectors identify penetrating muons.
- An inner vertex detector, usually fine silicon pixels or strips, measures precise hits and displaced decay vertices. A larger tracking volume follows charged trajectories through a magnetic field. Curvature supplies transverse momentum and charge sign; hit geometry and known field determine the track. Neutral particles leave no direct ionization track.
- An electromagnetic calorimeter, using dense crystals or absorber/sampling layers, measures electrons and photons through electromagnetic particle showers. Electrons have matching tracks; unconverted photons ordinarily do not. Segmentation provides position and shower-shape discrimination.
- A deeper hadronic calorimeter samples hadronic showers from hadrons and measures jet energy. Its larger depth contains nuclear cascades; invisible binding losses, leakage and differing electromagnetic/hadronic response require calibration.
- An external muon detector, behind most of the absorber, records long penetrating tracks. Matching them to inner tracks identifies muons; magnetic instrumentation can give an additional momentum measurement. Hadron punch-through and decays in flight are backgrounds.
- Dedicated particle identification uses specific ionization, time of flight, Cherenkov radiation or transition radiation to distinguish species over appropriate momentum ranges. The choice depends on the collider and physics goals.
- Forward detectors and luminosity monitors cover small polar angles and constrain normalization. Fast trigger and data-acquisition systems select useful collisions within bandwidth limits while recording efficiencies and timing.
Near-hermetic coverage permits a missing transverse momentum estimate from the calibrated vector sum, signaling neutrinos or other invisible particles but also sensitive to detector failures and escaping jets. At a hadron collider the initial parton longitudinal momenta are unknown, so missing longitudinal energy cannot be inferred in the same way; an collider supplies stronger initial-state constraints. Every subsystem needs alignment, calibration and independent control samples for reliable combined reconstruction.
